Happy 2018 for everybody
My leave started on 20th December, I've been in the garage from 7am-6pm most days.....some of the results, hope you enjoy :salute:

Wow! That is a thing of beauty! And it looks like a formidable blade!
Nice work! :like:
-
Thanks :salute:
I completed 5 knives, will post some more pics including better ones of the tanto.
Blade steel is leaf spring, guard is obviously brass but I might add my best solder job to date.....second torch gave the needed quick heat.
Handle is linen that I dyed black, pins are 6mm brass.
The knife is extremely light and fast in the hand.....and extremely pokey
A good friend challenged me to make this knife, he bought it and Kukri which is a great boost for my grinder fund
The Kukri was also a huge success, I compared it to my previous Kukri and I trimmed the weight by 110g by doing the draw filing on the newest one. It is deadly sharp and for a Kukri with an 8mm spine extremely light in hand :gimme:

that looks :o
I havo no use for larger tantos but I'm a sucker for the fixed blade Tantos that made Cold Steel famous and this one is a really sexy reincarnation of those.
It looks sharp indeed :tu:
I'd like pics of that Kukri, I'm also a sucker for Kukris :D
Excellent work :salute:

Thanks :salute:
I've been  over the Cold Steel tantos for years, this knife was indeed inspired by them, and thanks to a few happy accidents turned out with very nice lines.
A small fight broke out between 3 friends about who gets to buy it, and I badly wanted to claim it was to flawed to sell  Working freehand I'm never assured of the result, but I do know I need to make myself one someday
Will post some more photos this afternoon/evening :salute:

Thanks Tony......I might end up making Kukris and Tantos it seems

Kukri IV
This one is from the same piece of leaf spring as my previous (keeper) Kukri.......Yin&Yang arrangement
First the handle.
I'm going to spice things up my making micarta composite handles in the future, the results are worthwhile and just as durable I believe.
On this one I used the leftover black Linen micarta from the tanto for bolster and pommel, and made a piece of solid brown micarta from old SADF uniforms I was given for the "scale".
All of these were laminated together with red liners....excuse the bad photo:

Sweet looking blades Gerhard  :tu:

Thanks Steve
Unfortunately the shiny ones will never see much use, but few weeks ago on my cousin's farm I really enjoyed beating the living smurf out of my Kukri :like:
I was harvesting several types of wood including rock-hard Camelthorn from old fence posts. I hit ground several times, used it as a lever, and it just begs for more :salute:

Very well done :salute:

Thanks for the pictures G, it's always good to see what you've been up to :salute:

Those are pretty blades right there.
It's the second one from the left made to be wielded in P'Kal grip (edge out) or is that just a swedge all along the spine?
Looks amazingly weird in that pic :tu:

Now I see what you mean! No, that's a swedge on the spine. :salute: The knife is however very comfortable in both grips.
It has a bit of a story which I will get to

Just now seeing this :ahhh Beautiful work GG :like: :like: Really like the look of those :dd: :like:

Almost 2 weeks back at work.....feels like a million years ago :poh:
I'm hoping to buy some belt clips this afternoon and finish 2 sheaths this week......maybe
Been bad about posting more pics, but as soon as I can pull my finger out I have a treat for my fellow knife-aholics from the weekend

Been a disappointing start to 2018
Nothing is easy,
Though time gets you worrying,
My friend, it's OK
Just take your life easy
And stop all that hurrying,
Be happy my way
When tension starts mounting
And you've lost count of the pennies you've missed,
Just try hard
And see why they're not worrying me,
They're last on my list
Nothing's easy
Nothing is easy,
You'll find that the squeeze
Won't turn out so bad
Your fingers may freeze,
Worse thingsā¦

Best way to give back and hopefully inspire somebody else :salute:

Just wonderful to see all my photos.....gone
This year has been tough so far, found somebody able to properly laser etch my maker's mark, so these knives that were "done" in January can maybe finally be sold.
Apart from these I'm almost done with 2 more knives, will post a few pics.... :salute:
-
Rather proud of this one, a colleague (one of the bosses ) wanted to order a knife when I just started, couldn't say no anymore.
Proud yes......apart from the gutthook, which I hate and he insisted on........
Blade is forged from one ball bearing, 2nd of two that's been with me since childhood.....
Not a lot of material, so I had to find another solution....fortunately knife makers (mostly) give advice freely :salute:
8mm threaded rod tang

Gave it in to have my maker's mark laser etched.......then I get to figure out how to sharpen that bloody gutthook

Thanks Tony :salute: .....that green wool always impresses

And with the copper :ahhh
I wonder which green tea shirt I don't need
-
I actually wanted to update a thread on the knife on the left, it had blemishes and I didn't what to do about it......
Climbed in the the new belt grinder yesterday and just ground the forging marks out.......all except right at the back.
Started reshaping the handle as well, just need to find somebody that likes orange
(https://s33.postimg.cc/t3hkybtnj/IMG_20180527_212347_1.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

I have several shades of green cotton, the effect is not quite the same.......
The shop where I get material only had the one roll, it was cheap, and the lady after me bought the rest.
I'm sure you can get wool material in your part of the first world?
-
I like orange its hard to loose :tu:

Lots of interesting things going on in those pictures G :salute:
-
Thanks guys :salute:
I had to remove and build the handle on the tanto again, the chuck of my Dremmel failed while I was milling in that hollow for the tang, turns out it wasn't level so the knife was skew after glue-up.
It is leafspring, I knew the blade had a bend in that I thought I'd sorted out, so I was very unsure if I'd missed a kink in the tang.......so I tried to bend it straight
Learned two things.......my heat treat is good, and that handle construction is strong enough for anything.....
I'm not bragging, this is my anti-full tang knife statement!
Not all hidden tangs are created equal, but the way the tanto and the bowie with the green handle are built, you get so much more knife for the same weight. It's a lot more work, but a much better result IMHO.
-
I'll post some pics later, I was inspired by by a BRK with a blue Burlap handle I saw somewhere.
As you can see I use Hessian/Burlap a lot, buy the used bags from a local coffee importer/roaster/shop, 2nd and 3rd time in my life I've dyed, red came out better than the blue, I think my soup pot was too small for the particular bag.
Anyway, Hessian dyed, micarta made, nothing new there.......
I have mixed feeling about the following, because clearly for micarta what is best for practicality is not best for looks.....
Somebody recently told me that if nothing else is available, super glue does an okay job stabilizing wood, this was specifically with reference to out local Camelthorn wood which is too dense to stabilize.........which gave me an idea.....
I don't know what BRK uses, but with super glue and a polisher I get the same stunning effect. 8)
Problem being you loose the grip micarta is known for.
-
Superglue does work well for wood stabilization and sealing. It buffs to a nice sheen as well.
-

This one is a timing chain "damascus" and bearing race San Mai.
Unfortunately the welds aren't 100% in a few spots and the blade warped a bit in heat treat.
52100 is solid and forms the spine and edge....good knife anyway
