Title: Backside chisel and small driver: are they swappable?
Post by: shadowrider on May 27, 2018, 09:40:32 PM
Models such as the Craftsman have extra tools on the backside: a wood chisel and a small straight driver, respectively on the metal file back spring and on the wood saw one.

I'd like to know, are these small tools interchangeable? Is their thickness at the base the same?

Yup, I think they're interchangeable.
To the best of my knowledge, the metal saw spring and wood saw spring are almost identical, if not identical, so the chisel and small screwdriver should be swappable.

Victorinox's product photo of the Mountaineer Lite suggests it comes with a narrow screwdriver on the back, but in reality you'll find a chisel (Curses! I'd rather have the long screwdriver!)
I suppose this means they made a few with the screwdriver, took publicity photos, and then changed their mind at the last minute. Such a last minute alteration wouldn't be possible if the pieces weren't interchangeable...(though I could be wrong!)

Won't a kind soul that owns a Craftsman or a SwissChamp AND a caliber measure the base thickness of these tools for me?
Once somebody told me that the screwdriver base is 2.5mm and the chisel is 2.0mm, but I'd like to double check that.

This is for mod I'm thinking about, that has a small SD on the back of the metal saw (there's no can opener so I'll need a small flat SD).

If no one else does it first before then, I can check if they are compatible next week, when I get a swisschamp to pull apart.

Hopefully someone will come along before then.

A close up of a Craftsman's derriere.

Which is the chisel, which is the screwdriver?
They look identical to me...

For that matter, which is the metal file spring, and the wood saw spring? :D

Yes, they're completely interchangeable.  :tu:  I always replace the chisel with the screwdriver on the file later on my mods.

The small screwdriver is 1.76mm and the chisel is 1.77mm thick I’d say it’s pretty interchangeable.
