Title: Am I a cheapskate?
Post by: greenbear on January 09, 2019, 12:56:09 PM
I am concerned that I might be turning into a cheapskate, my favourite fixed blade is a Mora Robust, despite owning pricier and "better" knives, my favourite folder is a $26 Mercator and I do that inward whistle thing when I look at the price of an LM Charge+.

Am I alone in this peculiar behaviour or there others like me on MT.org?

No,you're not the only one! Although I've bought a few 'expensive ' knives,I'll stick with SAKs. Even my swisschamps were bought 2nd hand,as was my Spirit

I guess that's the three of us in cheapskate corner - good not to be alone on this one :D.

Jokes aside it is amazing how many good deals can be had on used SAKs and the like.

Cheesecake yes, cheapskate  :dunno:.  I like to think I'm frugal.  I'll typically spend amounts on my kids and others that I'd never spend on myself.  When it comes to SAKs, MTs, and knifes I tend to buy most everything at the flea market and have for a while.  I've gotten spoiled over time with good prices so the bay of fleas hasn't been used.

I do however like the idea of buying a quality item even if it might be more than I'd like to spend.  Buy once, cry once.

I don't think your a Cheapskate unless you think it is silly for anyone to spend more than you will.

Whatever it takes to get the job done to your own standard is nobodies concern but your own, well except for your spouse evidently in many cases it seems too?

So if you are satisfied with something who cares what anyone else thinks about it really?

On the other hand only a Cheapskate might ask such a question too. :pok:

 :iagree:

I am cheap on most things and refuse to pay retail for most items with the exception of a few things :salute: So you are definitely not alone  in fact the other side might be a bit more lonely :D

I agree with Aloha in that I like to buy quality items, and also in that I hit the flea markets when I can. That and Craigslist is where you get the USA made, quality Craftsman tools for example.

I agree with the MattGuyver that I buy used whenever possible.

Understanding that Ti is strong and light, I could not justify paying all that extra money for a Charge when it's just a more expensive Wave. Inward whistle and a headshake here, too, GreenBear.

Aside from a Rebar, a Buck 110 PaperStone, and Camper for myself, the only actual new multis or Swiss Army Knives I've bought have been gifts. I use this forum, Craigslist, eBay, and flea markets to buy my wares, and revel whenever I find New Old Stock, as it is often new condition for a used price, even if it is discontinued

The most I really spend is the price of Benchmades, but only 2 of them.

I got an OG LM Wave for 15 dollars though  :D

I don't think of Cheapskate as the same as Thrifty and Prudent really though there can be a fine line for sure.

Thrifty or Prudent mean I look for used or clearance items first when shopping for things that wear well and the fact that someone else took the depreciation so I doin't need to!
If what I "Need" is a quality item too then it is not diminished often by merely being pre loved.

Cheapskates often can or will not appreciate quality differences and think Thrifty folks are crazy for buying more pricey things though they might be much better products they just can not accept it?
Cheaper is just always preferred.

It is really amplified here too it seems to me where we often choose tools for quality that others will never appreciate!

Not even remotely the same to me.

Best Regards,

Chris

I'm not a cheapskate but I always look for deals. Also how much something costs doesn't determine the value or how useful something is for me. I have multitools that are considered "the best" that I hardly use in favor of others that I like using more that cost half or 1/3 the price.

:iagree:  with everyone.... you would be foolish if you didn't look at it that way.

If I buy something new I don't want to mess it up. BUT if I buy it used i don't mind using it. That is another reason I Like to buy used.

My favorite fixed blade was free. It's a Kabar that my dear old Uncle Sam gave me a long time ago, just for joining the Marines.   :salute:  :hatsoff:

I never pay full price for anything

I always haggle and haggle.

Bought a new freezer a few weeks ago, got $150.00 off the price plus an pesky thrown in.

I tried haggling in the Roads and Traffic a few years ago.
But the grubberment don't haggle, they just steal from you blind.

My Craftsman was second hand.
Picked it up at a few sale.
It was very dirty and stiff
But after cleaning, it came up like new, in fact I don't believe it was ever used.
And still I tangled
Down from the $40.00 he wanted to around $30.00

Always haggle, you will be surprised what you can do.

I'm working on a car at the moment
A nice new ISUZU
So far, I'm $4,000.00 under the advertised price
But I want more for the trade.

Always haggle
And always be ready to walk away if you don't get what you want.
