Title: Small test of pliers cutting stainless chain - Kick, Rebar, Swisstool and MP600
Post by: Troels on February 17, 2017, 05:28:59 PM
Nice forum - with tonnes of knowlegde  :tu:

Foolish as I am about testing tools... I started testing a new pair multi-pliers on 2 mm thick stainless chain (guessing slightly hardened?).
I recently got a relatively cheap Gerber MP600 and wanted to test out the pliers to get an impression and compare again some other brands. The test was actually part of a small project where I was doing some small gear hooks out of the chain

The MP600 was compared to the Leatherman Kick, Rebar and Vic. Swisstool. Each tool had 2 cuts on the chain

Some close ups of the wire cutters... or close to close ups ;)
Swisstool - no damage (it has cut much worse)

MP600 - no damage

Rebar - no damage (see later)

Kick ... now gifted with an enlarge wire cutter notch

When I saw a factory tour from Leatherman plant on youtube, I was quite impressed with their quality control test of pliers that has to cut paper.
Even though the Rebar cut the chain no problems... its not really cutting paper anymore

I newer planned to cut much paper with the pliers anyway

Nicely done.   :tu:   How about cutting up some more stuff?   :)   We like cutting more stuff (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,63712.0.html).   ;)

I have to say that, despite being a MP600 fan, even I'm a little surprised that the cutters took no visible damage. :tu:

Or maybe starting a general thread about what your pocket jaws has been chewing today  :D ... I will start it next time the jaws have been active ;)
Your blunt nose Mr. Surge looks awesome  :ahhh

The kick was my very first MT from 2007, it has seen a lot of use and the pliers were already slightly loose. I guessing that is the reason it took damage - tired steel and loose plies.

The MP600 was great at this small test. It cut the chain four times with no damage.
....and it was the only of the four MTs that I did not need to squeeze between the thighs while trying to cut the chain.... maybe only relevant to guys with smallish hands  The smaller angle on the MP600 makes one-handed hard wire cutting easy.

Great demo of the advantage of the sliding head system.  Did you pinch your palm with the handles when cutting the chain?
