When you say VERY pic heavy, you're not kidding, are you? :ahhh
I'm glad I have a flat rate internet traffic or I might have spent my whole plan on one thread. :P
This is still one of my favorite ones out of the bunch.

If I'm not mistaken it was one of the first ones. Have the acrylics shop bookmarked somewhere but too many hobbies, not enough time. :-\

I haven't done anything in olive wood so far, but only because it was never requested. I could if I find a good piece I could order. Some of the SAKs that I've rescaled were purchased by me and those are mostly my favorite models: Tinker and Spartan. I just think that thinner models look more elegant with some custom scales... I did do a few Swisschamps as well, just didn't post those photos because the materials repeated themselves.
And of course, thank you very much for the kind words :)

Ah, fair enough. I agree with you, really, elegant wooden scales like this do fit smaller models better :tu: Ever done any 84mm SAK's?
Oh good Lord. Lovely stuff! :tu:
I don't want to interrupt your incredible serie of beautiful pics from your very beautiful knives, but I have to say WOW :tu: WOW
OK. Now you may continue ... :D
Very nice work there! :tu:
I like the acrylic ones and the idea that you now have the tweezers and toothpick figured into them!
Do you have the "Plus" scales and staight pin ones yet? If so, can you post a few pics showing them?
I like the "Plus" scales alot! :)
Woooooow! AMAZING WORK!! Many thanks for sharing!
I'm only part way done, but I hope to see the inside of some of these scales if you have pics.

Have you or are you going to try them on 111mm?
is the zebrawood tinker still available?. Awesome!
Another Spartan, this time the first one I did in acrylic. This was for a very good friend in California, sadly it got stolen in transport. I still think it's one the best SAKs I did and it hurts me that it's in the hand of some crook...

And I was excited when I got my United Woods set by Wenger.
I should have come to you.
BTW - You say you like the wenge wood - It does look pretty nice
Have you made a Wenger in wenge? :tu:
One wee question: I assume you glue the scales onto the knives?? Epoxy ?
Cheers and keep up the good work.

Wow! Bantam (with T&T) + Scissors + This (or even some orange and black acrylic) and I would be a happy, albeit broke, fella!
You taking custom orders? lol :pok:
I have a feeling I'm gonna like these.
BTW, is that supposed to be Dalmatian as in Dalmacija.
Nice ones. :tu:

I got "Blue Topaz Water" and "Woodland Camo" and in the jumbo pen blank size "Turquoise" and "Mother of Pearl".
I was pleased to find the "realstone" range there as it will enable me to add a stone scale version to my Recruit Parade.

Those new acrylics look great! I especially like the Dalmatian--it appears to have good depth to it.
I love your scale work my friend.
The first SAK is a Tinker, done in exotic African beli wood. Beli wood is similar to zebra wood but with less contrast between the stripes and background.
Very cool samples. :tu:
Have you thought of opening up a store on www.edcsource.com (http://www.edcsource.com) and selling those?
We have a nice how to on selling there.

There are no listing fees at all, and no commission for items under $50. Items over $50 are 5% I think.

These are for sale actually, but I will not be listing them because there's too many obstacles for me at the moment to do that. PP only allows users to send money in my country, and not receive it...
I like that one! I love the darker woods.

Just amazing work! :salute:
Nice work, how thick is the copper? Ive made 84mm sak scales from both copper and brass and found them too heavy so I mostly just use those materials on the 58mm size now. I made a brass 93mm and that one felt like a tank! :D
Copper is an interesting material though as it ages so nicely. Looking forward to seeing how you make out. :tu:

Local supplier has 3mm or 4mm (which I chose), I think 3.5 would be perfect but they don't have that thickness... Brass is my next project. This was all done with an angle grinder and a file and I think it would be much faster if I found someone to cut it on CNC for me. I will have this finished next week, so far I can tell this is going to be as heavy as a brick... Will post once it's done
What's the copper like to work? Looks lovely.
Thanks guys, I don't think I'll be doing more of these. Just too complicated of a material to do anything with it. I have one more set of scales for 91mm, and I will do those probably next month, and I plan to do a cratered pattern on itCreated pattern? Bring it on Mile. I am really want to see what would come up with. Keep up the work.
Incredible work MWDP. :tu:
Do you make these for other people or are they just for yourself? I would love to eventually get a pair of custom scales.

Thank you :) All of these are for other people, the copper sold yesterday within minutes of posting it :) I don't collect any of my own work, I usually sell them or trade for alox ;)
MWDP, WOW, you work is fantastic! I think swiss army knives look so much nicer and feel better in the hand when they have wood scales and yours are works of art. I also liked your acrilic scales, very interesting to look at, amazing to see something that started from a block of man made material look so natural and hand crafted, well done.

Sadly no, acrylic is fun but people get put off once I tell them that although acrylic is very beautiful and gets an insanely high polish, it's prone to scratches. I have some more acrylic left in case you want something, I also have a block of some swirly green acrylic coming next month or so :) I'm hoping I can order a large batch of materials at the end of this month, but everything I get from Brisa.fi always gets customs/tax charges, they never lower the value on the customs declaration

Beautiful and amazing wood.
Where on earth (literally!) do you get it all from - In terms of supplier and country.
I have never even heard of most of the wood you use, never mind seen it!
Presumably all the wood you use is natural and not stained in anyway - Just sanded and polished?
Keep up the good work 8)

I really like the 111 mm. Have you ever done scales for the 111s without Liner lock? Here (http://www.victorinox.com/medias/sys_master/celum_assets/8819860209694_SAK_0_8823__S1_21370_eps_1.jpg) you see what i mean.
The opening in the scale could be difficult, but in my opinion the new standing out liner locks make make holding the knife uncomfortable. Therefore i prefer the grey scale locks.
A lot of stuff got done today. Group shot:

Thank you :) I was expecting a bit lighter color, but it is what it is, first time dealing with this wood
I really like those 111mm scales.
Do you need the knife or can you make the scales and ship them out? What would something like that run. What do your 91mm scales cost and do you need the knife for those?
I cant afford anything right now, but I just would like to know for future reference. You can PM me.
How did I miss this thread?

Hey Cap'n - I need the knife because that way I can get the most precise fit, and I like to glue the scales on myself. Prices range from 30-50$ for the rescaling and return shipping, this depends largely on the size of the SAK and the type of material I'm working with.
As for your situation, I'm always down for a trade in return for my work, especially if the word "alox" is involved :) Please don't hesitate to shoot me a PM in case you have something in mind

Hi there, I have been thinking about making a nice instruction tutorial, but I never have the time (or the nerves) to do it. If you have any questions, please ask, either here in the thread, or send me a PM, I will do my best to help you.
PS. If anyone has a Danish Bantam (green or black) which they would trade for some of my work, let me know!
The materials I use are flat because I cut them all to thickness with a circular saw, ideally to be between 3 and 4 millimeters thick. As for the toothpick and tweezers slots, I have a friend who does it for me mechanically on a mill, it's really difficult to it by hand.
Once I sand the scales to 800 grit, I coat them with linseed oil. Once I coat the wood, I give it a few hours so there's enough time for the wood to soak in the oil. I repeat this 4-5 times, then I let the wood dry. I then sand with 1500 and 2000 grit sandpaper. After this I polish with micromesh up until 20000 grit. Finally, I put some beeswax on the scales and then rub it in with a clean cotton cloth. Hope this helps!
Mile what is that wood in the last pictures? The brown stuff.

The guy who sent it to me didn't know, but after some searching I think it's walnut burl
I've been asked every now and then about why I don't do Wengers. The answer is very simple - Wengers have nested liners, and they require milling of the scale in order to get factory fitment.

Hi MWDP - I remember reading this before.
But why not make the new wood scales just flush with the outer liner - Then you do not need to worry about the nesting.
I think that means the inner liners will be slightly longer than the scales - But not a big issue??
PS. Still loving your work :)
What about making them larger to match the size of the inner liners but just glue them to the outer liners without cutting the inside inlay out?

Yessir, just didn't post here since I don't wanna clog up the thread with 20 models in thuya burl :D

Would not having the liners add a lot of extra work to the brass or copper for the rivet holes?

I'd say yes, the rivet holes needs to be much more precise (if you're just gluing on a set of wooden scales It'd be ok to do them quite haphazardly). Second, you'd need to exchange the rivets for new ones (and the 2.25 mm is hard to find). Lastly you'd need to peen the rivets.

Very nice.
Micarta and G 10 polish up real nice and are very resistant to damage.
You should consider doing natural linen micarta or some linen green for the old look.

It's highly unlikely that I'll pick it up and do it on my own - even these were on order. For me personally, micarta is harder to work with than G10 but I like the finished look a lot better
