Title: The Victorinox Waiter Appreciation Society
Post by: El Corkscrew on April 10, 2017, 04:19:58 AM
Guten Tag, people!   In this thread I'd like to highlight the practical, useful, slimline, don't-even-know-it's-in-the-pocket elegance of the Victorinox Waiter.    I feel like the Waiter is one of the most under appreciated SAKs out there.  Talk about usefulness!  If you're sporting a mini screwdriver in the corkscrew and have new scales w/pin hole you're working with 10 functions in a single layer knife...  11 if you count the keyring  :P.  It really puts the "Swiss Army Knife" in "Swiss Army Knife."    This group of members show they have refined, sophisticated, and urbane qualities,  truly understanding the concept of less is more.  Such high caliber members can come here to share, learn, and grow together in this...   Society.

Do we have any other Waiter fans out there?  I know it's all Toolbox this and Super Champ Plus that, but, dang, what a lot of functionality in ONE LAYER!!!

I have pictured below 2 Waiters.  I believe one is the earliest incarnation and the other the most recent (w/out KR) and "Weishaupt" ad.   (Btw, I LOVE German/Swiss/Austrian ads on knives, makes me remember and miss that part of the world.)  Notable differences are the Economy scales on the older one, as well as a slightly more edgy, less-rounded combo tool, fluted corkscrew, no half-stop, old small  "V" stamp.

I've been on a minimalist kick lately and have recently rediscovered my love for the Waiter. So small yet so functional and barely noticeable in a pocket. I find the combo tool, though I wish it was just slightly more robust, handles most of my simple screwdriver and light pry bar needs. If I'm on some sort of job, computer or photo related, I will bring my Crunch and maybe another tool or two, but for my day to day urban existence it really fits nicely :tu:

It occurred to me that the Waiter is the smallest SAK to support some must have tools unavailable in alox: corkscrew, tweezers and toothpick.

You're right, it's definitely not as robust, but really, should we be using our >91mm SAKs for prying in the first place?  The Waiter is not my favorite SAK or even my usual first choice to carry but I feel like it punches way above its weight limit... and the snap on a clean, lightly oiled Waiter, like a mouse trap it is.

It occurred to me that the Waiter is the smallest SAK to support some must have tools unavailable in alox: corkscrew, tweezers and toothpick.

Excellent point, RS!!!   :salute:

Got to agree about the snap, in fact I just woke up my dog folding the combo tool closed :D

The combo tool has no problem prying some keys off my keyboard for de-gunking purposes, so I'm good with it.

I would probably carry Waiter all the time, but I just dont like the combo tool enough.

I can see the charm as I only carry small SAKs anyways. If Tourist wouldnt exist Waiter would be the next to replace it.

Sure Tourist is chunky, it depends from the weather if I am able to carry it, that problem would not be with Waiter.

Good topic!

As others said, it just punches way above its weight and size and it's incredible useful in urban life.
That minimalist toolset also sharpens your mind and makes you improvise with what you've got, allowing you to discover new uses for these simple yet effective implements

A true classic SAK and excellent companion

Mine has the broken scale but it's a lovely scar of the times we've had together     ::)

I really like that relative of the Waiter, the Apprentice.  The Phillips gives it a slimmer profile than the Waiter, and for me it's more useful than the corkscrew.

I have one I keep as back up in my lunch cooler for work.  I won't use the corkscrew at the office,  but may use the eye glass driver. Unfortunately,  there is something wrong with the spring for the corkscrew which let's it stand proud of the handle.  That makes pocket carry less than optimal. This will fit in the 5th pocket of my jeans nicely.

This one is from sometime in the 80s, and has no half stop on the rounded combo tool.

Without the mini screwdriver, and without the keyring, I get 33.9 grams.

I have a huge soft spot for the Waiter.  It was the first SAK I bought as an adult and started my interest in all things Vic and Wenger.*  I agree that it's all too easy to forget just how good a SAK it is, stuffed full of features in a small package that still has a proper sized knife blade.

*Come to think of it, that £10 knife has cost me a LOT of money over the years. >:(

A waiter and a classic sd live on my keychain, when I get to the gym, i seperate the two keychains. The waiter comes with me if needed with my locker key attached and the sd stays with the truck/house keys. It sure is light and it sure is useful if its all you have.

I had a NIB Waiter laying in my collection. Bought it at a closeout sale once, just for the heck of it.
This thread made me curious and today I have swapped the 108mm Solo for the Waiter.
I'me very curious how it will do today, it's in my watch pocket know and so far it has been used three times already!
I'll rapport back in tonight. :D

I like the Waiter over the Bantam for two reasons: The corkscrew allows for an eyeglass screwdriver to be added, and the pin and bushings for the corkscrew itself acts as the middle attachment for the scales, keeping them on the knife better and preventing them from bowing outward in the middle, which is a pet peeve of mine, whether for the Bantam or for my Hardwood Spartan.

Waiter is a good basis for 84mm mods. Another Waiter unit ended as a base for my custom golfer pictured here

Great stuff!  Those are tools for furthering SAK education and they are well-shot.  :like:  :tu:

Now back to El Waiter, he performed better than expected today as a keychain SAK.  Never really gave anything bigger than a 58mm an honest chance. I think El Waiter could be a more permanent keychain fixture.  Or maybe as a pool/mail box keychain SAK.  Or take-to-the-beach keychain SAK.   No problemo for 5th pocket carry.  :tu:

Yesterday I carried a Waiter alongside my Handyman.
I swapped out my 108mm Solo out for the Waiter and took note of what I used the waiter for.

The moment I arrive at work it's go-time for the Waiter. A lensmeter is not functioning properly and I have to remove the dustcover to clean it out. Easy fix with the combo tool.

Next I'm in my workspace and I'm all out of alcohol. I can't function properly without alcohol, so I pop the cap of a fresh bottle with the knife.
Halfway through my consultation hour I felt hungry and peeled an apple.

The rest of the day isn't that exciting,
During lunch break I cut my bread and spread some filet americain.
I expected the blade to be short for the job but it dud very well. I didn't miss my Solo for a moment.

The day crawled on and near the end of the day I peeled another apple.

Back hope I used the blade to cut open some packages during cooking and flipped my meat with the blade.
The Waiter is a solid performer! I can't wait to do a "Cooking with..." experiment with the Waiter.
(It might be fun to shoot some pix and post them here).

At the end of the day it was time to reconcile and evaluate the day.

I loved the red scales on the Waiter. I haven't carried a red-scaled cellidor SAK in a while and since the Waiter was brand new it had that 'new SAK shine' to it. Lovely.
The Waiter is a 84mm which is shorter than the 91mm I usually carry. I tend to forget that. However, It performed very well at the same tasks.
Sure, I like a larger blade when making my lunch. The Solo 108mm is my favourite at the moment. But the large blade of the Waiter does everything it has to.
I'm a fan of the combo tool. A lot of functionality in one tool and it saves one layer on the SAK.

I had all the time to look at the Waiter more closely and noticed that it has the thinner bladestock and the embossed liner. I did not like that. Even though it didn't impair use in anyway. I want thick stock blades!  >:(
It made me wonder when Vic decided it was a good idea to skimp on the blades reduce the tickness. Do any of you know? I had this one laying around for a good couple of years now (7 or 8 years I guess) and thought it was a more recent change.

At the end of the day I brushed off the pocket lint and cleaned the blade. I put it back in it's sleeve and back into the collection. To leave it Waiting for another day.

I really liked this experiment and put my StayGlo Climber on my nightstand, ready for service tomorrow!

Wow, great post!   Really enjoyable read.  As far as thickness on 84mm, I'm not entirely sure, I assume the most recent was in '05 with the new stamp (No rostfrei, crossbow)

I just wanted to add myself to the society. I have two Waiters with two more on the way. One of which will have nylon scales. I'm addicted.

I love how simple, light, and thin they are, yet have so many uses. I think they are probably the smallest iteration of the full size SAK where by just glancing at it you know undoubtedly that it is a SAK, probably because it has a blade and the exposed back corkscrew (setting the red cellidor scales aside that is).

I've added stainless steel pins and the mini screwdrivers to mine making them that much better. Now they look like compact Compacts.

I used my 84mm nylon scaled Waiter to open a can of beans this weekend. It worked fine. In fact,  smoother than my Wenger Classic 62 did recently.

If you want probably the best looking Waiter on the planet
Try this....

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Victorinox-Swiss-Army-Knife-custom-Black-Wattle-wood-scales-/172626428892?hash=item28315643dc:g:1Y8AAOSwj25Y8de0
But hurry just under four hours to go on the auction  :pok:

Stunning scales and fabulous filework. And a great price at the mo... $30ish usd?

I think one of our members may have had something to do with this...  ;)

On rare occasions Amazon reviews can be quite good. This one for the Waiter is excellent and comprehensive. It even references multitool.org :tu:

Why Does the Best SAK Have the Worst Name?, May 23, 2014

This review is from: Waiter Swiss Army Knife (Sports)
OK, I won't totally commit to saying the Waiter is the absolute *best* SAK, but it's certainly in the running.

(I don't comment on the quality of SAKs; others cover that; I just talk about what's good -- or not so good -- about particular models)

If the Galactic Overlords decreed we could only have one SAK and had to use it all the time, I could be happy with any of these: Spartan, Compact, Camper, Climber Plus, Huntsman, Farmer, Waiter, Rambler, or Manager.

Thinking specifically about the Waiter:

I hate the name. Waiter. I have nothing against waiters (they bring me food and drink for low pay... I wish they got paid more), but such a lousy name for this knife.

It should be called either the Thru-Hiker or the Ultralight.

It's the perfect knife for a long-distance thru-hiker or ultra-light backpacker. Its blade is big enough to do actual work, but it's ultra light. It opens packages, bottles. and cans; it unties knots; it cuts stuff that needs cut; its screwdriver can fix a pack or tune a stove: everything a backpacker or thru-hiker needs. It's also terrific for around town and at the office. It's a great low-key gentleman's folder. Very nonthreatening even for hoplophobiacs.

The corkscrew is very good at untying stubborn knots in paracord. This is important. If you hike, if you camp, you know this. (It also opens wine bottles; easy way to be a hero.)

Can-opener, bottle-opener, wine-bottle-opener... This is important too. At some point -- whether you're a thru-hiker or just a civilian -- you're going to need one of these.

The Waiter (Thru-hiker, Ultra-light) has a screwdriver... it can fix a pack or stove. With attention, the multi-tool blade will handle a Phillips screw.

Of all the umpteen bazillion models of SAKs, the Waiter (or Thru-Hiker, or Ultralight) has the best ratio of tools to layers. Put in a mini-screwdriver and straight pin, and it's 10 tools (not counting lanyard ring) for one layer. Best of any SAK.

The straight pin and and tweezers are what you need for splinters/slivers.

The whole point of carrying a Swiss Army Knife is to carry it all the time (or, as close to all the time as you can get with our new and onerous laws... airports, airplanes, courthouses). Its virtues only shine when you always have it with you. Read any SAK review on Amazon... no matter how thick it is (Explorer, anyone?) someone will say "This SAK has all the tools I need but it's thin enough to carry in my pocket." That's only true if you dress a certain way (the Explorer is way fat... so is the Huntsman, which is one of my favorites). This SAK, the Waiter (Thru-hiker, Ultra-light), truly is slim enough to carry no matter what you're wearing.

The scissors are great... the saw is great... This knife doesn't have either of those.

But, it has way more than a regular slip-joint pocket knife or single blade lock-back, which many people have carried for, like, a century. And it's so slim... and it's so cheap... and it's so good.

In general, I'm not a fan of the 84 mm SAKs... I think the Tinker is better than the Small Tinker, I think the Spartan is better than the Tourist. But... in this case, the 84 mm platform makes sense. The thin (and kinda short) Waiter fits on a key chain just fine. Perfect for EDC aficionados.

FYI: the springs on the Thru-Hiker (aka Waiter) are stiffer than those on the 91 and 58 mm SAKs. This isn't good or bad... just a fact. If you use the knife often, it's a good thing: good solid open and close; the knife "walks and talks." If you toss the knife into a pack or glove compartment and ignore it for months... not so good. I've handled neglected Waiters that I just couldn't get open.

Factoid for Knife Knerds: At one point, Victorinox made a 91 mm Waiter Plus... same knife as we're talking about here, but a little longer, with a ballpoint pen in the handle. Very collectible. If you see one, check the price (multitool.org, bladeforums.com), but be ready to jump on it. (Best tool-to-layer ratio of all SAKs ever made.)

If you need/want the scissors, go with the Climber, Compact, Rambler, or Manager.

If you need the saw, go with the Camper or Farmer.

If you can live without either of those, and you want a versatile and high-value pocket knife you can carry anytime, anywhere, no matter what you're wearing, no matter how liberal the people you hang out with are, go with the Thru-hiker (aka, the Waiter).

I'm really not much into the one layer SAK's, i tend to settle on two layer minimum because of comfort and basic functions i need.
But i was just browsing to some used Vic's on the used sites over here and came across this waiter for €18. It looks great, but probably won't carry it, so i'm trying to decide if i buy it or not (don't know if the seller still has it tho, haven't called yet...)  What do you guys think...?

Dropped the Waiter today and replaced it with the Big Wino One. Weight goes up from 34 tot 55 grams. Remember I was only carrying the Waiter for the corkscrew and t&t and as an aside to my alox EDC, I will not miss the combo tool a lot. And now I'm carrying a 111mm blade again.

I really like that relative of the Waiter, the Apprentice.  The Phillips gives it a slimmer profile than the Waiter, and for me it's more useful than the corkscrew.

Another fan of the Apprentice here.  Easy enough to mod your Waiter into one as well.

Nylon scales are pretty hard to find these days, at least IMO.  +B used to sell them as did FelineVet, but last time I checked (last month) I didn't see any.
My best bet has been to purchase on used SAKs,  The last Waiter I bought used had really clean Blue Nylon scales with the Vic emblem...but it's now an Apprentice.

I know one store in Spain who sells regular red nylon scales 84 with and without place for back tool (Phillips or corkscrew)  the same for 91.
6€ both front and back scales.

They are a little bit expensive, in my opinion, adding shipping costs will make them not worthy.

Anyway if anyone is interested, I can try to get and ship them. Just PM

Cheers

They look cool, but the groove was hard to clean if actually floating in your pocket then used for wine.

I just ran into this post, wanted to say that the waiter is one of my favorite knives.  I do feel like it needs an awl to be complete, but overall this is a great size knife.

Decided to just keep a Waiter in the silverware drawer since I'm always running to my room to grab a SAK while cooking/opening wine at home. It's already getting a lot more use than it used to  Galileo approves. :tu:

I've need doing the same. For that occasional bottle of wine.

It's funny... The one thing i really "hated" on my first Spartan back in the 80's was that deep grooved corkscrew...  :-\ While it looked good i hated the rasp edges from the groove on my hand and the way it always picked up tons of pocket lint.
I prefer the new ones by a mile...

If the corkscrew touches your wine, you're doing it wrong.

On rare occasions Amazon reviews can be quite good. This one for the Waiter is excellent and comprehensive. It even references multitool.org :tu:

Hey man... thanks!

My brothers Waiter.
He told me this is his first SAK. It has seen a lot of action playing in the woods.
And I could tell. The blade's tip was bent, the combo tool was bent. And the edge... was as good as gone. The straight part of the edge had a slight convex curve to it. As far as I know Victorinox has no recurve blades on the Waiter...

Victorinox Waiter

I like how he kept the box and booklet. He now keeps it in his desk drawer, but still uses it.
I think he got this SAK in 1995/96. These things are really lifetime tools.

Now that it is winter and I'm wearing a coat when I leave, I've been regularly carrying a KF4 in a jacket pocket, which means that I really only need a SAK for the SAKish items like the thin blade, corkscrew, bottle/can opener, tweezers and toothpick, which means that the Waiter is the perfect fit. So now I'm re-appreciating the Waiter :tu:

Also during the holiday season I am quite likely to need the corkscrew to open a bottle of wine and will definitely be using the cap lifter to open a beer or two :drink:

yup, homemade.
I often use them instead of the P7 clips on smaller, thinner SAKs, as they keep them closer to the edge (seam) of the pocket

Wohoo!

I won a lot of vics from ebay which included a Waiter. It's my first, and MAN do I like it. So incredibly light and such a slim package. I figured it was about $3.75 worth of a $15 lot. Worth every cent. :D

Congrats on the Waiter. There is something really appealing about the size/functionality ratio. I carry mine regularly, especially when I don't expect to be doing much more than cutting something and opening beer, which is frankly most of the time these days :)

If I'm dead honest, I'm the same. Friday nights, I go to a freind's house and drink beers that need to be popped open. It's not like they don't HAVE bottle openers in their kitchen, but it's more... 'fun' I guess... to use a SAK.

And most of the cutting I do is cutting open mail... which is usually packages with other multitools. :D

funnily enough, I had a Waiter with the "MAN" branding on its scales. I guess it must've been a popular gift from that company since I've stumbled upon six or seven "MAN" branded SAKs throughout the years

I read your post quickly and though you had purchased a "MAN" Waiter too, but then read it again

For me it's beer and mostly cutting up all of the amazon boxes that come with my wife's orders. I have no idea what she is ordering as we sort of have an unofficial 'don't ask, don't tell' policy regarding impulsive online purchases, but they often arrive in pairs and sometimes twice a day :ahhh

I flew in to a cool town for work and the rush meant I had no checked baggage. I needed a pocket tool to cover the basics with the least outlay (likely to lose it again) so I grabbed a Waiter at the local outdoor shop.
It’s opened more boxes in the last two days than I have probably opened in the last 6 months; I don’t feel bare.
Beers after hours too!  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180215/29fc43d7da824ab00a0d98c86d1dd0ed.jpg)

Oh yes, the Waiter! A good two weeks ago I bougth two 84 mm Vic's off ebay dirt cheap, just to get a feel for that size, one Waiter and one Sportsman. I like them both, but the Waiter was a true relevation! So ligthweight and small yet so capable. I fell in love with it instantly and it made me to reconsider what you need and don't need on a SAK. Truly a gem.

I only miss the scissors a bit. Victorinox really should make a 84 mm Compact or even "Golfer", the hook is not that important for me.

I recently got an Alox Bantam.

Now I'm torn between the two. When you talk about ultimate slim and lightweight carry, that Bantam is a miracle. But the other tools on the Waiter are legitimately useful.

ThePeacent, try setting all those knives you have pictured on a scale. My mind is blown how lightweight the Waiter is compared to most other knives. AND it gets you more functions. The Opi MIGHT beat it, but I'm not even sure of that.

Hello Waiter Wednesday Members!

I have two VSAKs to share today, one rarer Bartender (which has no club of its own apparently) and a very modern Waiter.

Here's my Bartender, which I think is just a Waiter minus the corkscrew.  I'm not sure how it differs from a Cellidor scaled Bantam; perhaps someone who knows can clarify this.  I am the original owner of this knife, having bought it on December 10, 1983.  Although I don't really have any memories of the purchase itself, based on the date I am sure I should have been studying for finals instead of knife shopping at Cutlery World.  The receipt shows I paid $11.50 for this knife brand new.

Fast forward in time to 2014 and I bought this very handy camping kitchen kit for my son for his 13th birthday.  It includes a Waiter, two Victorinox kitchen knives, and a combo fork/spoon utensil.  I can't remember how much I paid for this, but I'm thinking in the neighborhood of $25.  Does anyone else remember this kit?

Well, the first is a Bantam. Never heard of the Bartender (SAKWiki doesn't know anything about it, either). Maybe it's just a name they used in the US and A, to make it more "relatable"?

Well, the SAKWiki says this (quoting) about the Waiter:

"The Victorinox Waiter is an 84mm Swiss Army Knife.
Although this model has one of the more minimal tool sets of the Victorinox knives, with only a single layer of tools, it is still quite popular as a very practical configuration for a minimalist pocket knife, and for travel.
This model was also known as the Victorinox Bartender in some markets."

But it's weird that my "Bartender" doesn't have a corkscrew.  What I suspect happened is somebody sold me a Bantam in a Bartender box.  We shall probably never know....

Since it's also Wenger Wednesday, the Evo 63 deserves recognition. Wenger's non-Evo models were called the Entree, Basic 63 (no T&T), and Classic 63.

Yes, shaped like a bottle. Or rather half a bottle, the back side is flat. There are no tools on the neck end.

I don´t remember how or when I got it, I just found it again the other day and thought to show it.

Missing my waiter today  :( Sent it off with a buddy who couldn't find his pocket knife when packing to head to college. I know it's serving faithfully, and I certainly have a few other single layers to choose from to fill it's spot in my pocket if I wanted. But it's not the same. Especially doing the minimalist challenge, the waiter has been a favorite of mine for some time. Maybe I'll hunt out an Alox bantam to fill it's place. I've been having a craving for alox lately :gimme: and until they make alox models with back-layer tools...

I got my first alox bantam a couple months back,  it's astonishingly thin and easy to carry.   I'm a big alox fan and own several but I always feel a bit more prepared with those awlsome backlayer tools and T&T. I use the corkscrew mini SD often and when it's alox + 58mm I'm just praying my glasses don't become too loose. No worries with a Waiter + 58mm.  Especially if the 58mm is a manager or Minichamp... then you have a ton of bases covered with a very minimal combo

I keep an executive in el jacket pocket and a Waiter in the kitchen drawer.   The Waiter sees a lot of action in the kitchen and I kind of neglect el Executive because I'll usually have pants on if I'm wearing a jacket... and if I have pants on then you can bet there will be a SAK in the pocket. In summary, the Waiter has earned a special place as my no-pants SAK.

:ahhh ...so if you have your Waiter with you, the police may have a few questions for ya...

My Waiter does have a hole for el pin, I'll have to try to add to the Wiki which says no, if I read it correctly?
Of course, no pen, that would be 91mm and the micro sd is an add on anyway.  :salute:

My last purchase, Waiter together with an old Zebralight SC600 II
I like this Vic, I like the 85 mm format but maybe I would like the same also in the 91 mm version.
It was the last available, I paid only 13.61 euros.

@pfrsantos - Thanks

@TonySal - Thanks, I knew the site but I had not read the page of "Waiter Plus"
https://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Waiter+Plus

Sorry that it is no longer in production :-(

I'd like a Waiter with a saw (Walker) I'm following the price on Amazon to try to take it to the bottom.
But I have read comments from some customers who say that the saw on 84 mm models is impractical, I don't know if this is true.
Have an idea about this? (functionality of the saw on a model of only 84 mm)
Thank you for every opinion

I really like the form factor on my waiter. But there is one thing that annoys me about the blade.
So much so i have been carrying my spartan more now.

As a lefty, almost every time i try to onehand close the bottle opener, i end up catching it on the main blade. A few times it has even rolled the edge slightly.

Anyone run into this?

Did it myself.  It came in a handy man special from eBay.
2 SDs and the MiniChamp.  The SDs were both kinda rusty and someone had tried to sharpen the MC blades with some sort of electric sharpener of some sort.
Scissors from 1 SD and blades and scales from the other.

This was my first attempts at tearing one apart and putting it back together.

Well I did it. I parted with the Waiter and gave it to my dad as intended. He was ecstatic too. I asked him if he ever wished he had a small handy knife on him he responded saying these days he has come across many times he could use one. I showed him the waiter, the mini SD in the corkscrew and he loved it! So, yes, i'll have to purchase another but it feels pretty good after his reaction!

Hi guys,
The Amazon just delivered me a Waiter yesterday. It's probably my perfect little SAK - though to be fair I rarely use a corkscrew any more, but it takes the small screwdriver nicely!

I was a little surprised to find that it's got plastic liners (not the red scales, the silver liners). While it's very lightweight, there's something about the weight of an SAK that feels so good in the hand that's missing.

Do all the 84mm models have plastic liners? This is my first in that size.

Thanks,
Jeff

Whooottt...???  :sa: :sa:

plastic liners?? I'm pretty sure you're mistaken...

I've never heard of a single Vic model with plastic liners

Why do you feel they are plastic? Can you post some pics?

Do all the 84mm models have plastic liners? This is my first in that size.

No 84mm (at least 2 layers) has any plastic liners.
If that is real and they are putting plastic liners on any saks, it's the day i'll stop buying new sak's from Vic, honest....

Really hope you are mistaken about that

I removed the 2nd layer, though this is a quite expensive way to lengthen a knive 7mm 😂

Hello everyone, this is my first post to the forum, I wanted to share my "new" Waiter with rough wooden scales :).

I accidently found this SAK in my girlfriends junk drawer. It had those ugly-ass worn down white scales, but blade itself looked like it was barely ever used. She wasn't sure when or where she got it from and she let me have it.

I had some scrape rosewood laying around and decided to give it a try and carve out new scales. My goal was to do as much as possible with simple, EDC-type tools. Used mostly my leatherman wave for cutting and filing, and Opinel to carve. I only cheated with drilling, I used battery drill to make the holes for the pins. Didn't have the patience to do it manually :D. To my suprise, after some adjusting of the holes using flat screwdriver on my leatherman, I was able to pop both scales on the knife with a nice "click". I will propbly add some glue later on, but for now they sit surprisingly tight. Just gave it a wipe with raw hemp oil.

Looks rough, but I really like the result!

Nice work MM and welcome to the club.   :tu:

...so... level the Waiter "as is" or add the mini driver?

Actually I had no idea about the mini driver until I googled what you wrote (you mean the one you can insert in the corkscrew, right?). That's awesome!

I plan to file down slots for tweezers and toothpick to make it a proper SAK, and since I have to order tweezers anyway I think I'l go for mini driver too! Thanks a lot for the tip!

I just got a Waiter and a cellidor Bantam for giving out as presents. I use a Waiter at home regularly but I can see the advantage of the Bantam when opening cans (more comfy than squeezing a corkscrew!).

After decades of collecting many 'regular sized' SAKs and multi-tools with all the bells & whistles, I finally came to appreciate less is more. This is my new found love. The 84mm is the best form factor for me with the super thin one layer with all the functionality that I use most often in an urban setting, nothing more, and without the bulk. With its lighter and smaller form factor, I see myself carrying the Waiter more often going forward than my favorite Compact and Juice S2 which I still think are one of the best 'regular size' edc. around. I love the 84mm form factor so much I also have on order a Walker (for my daily hikes), and an alox Batam (for more formal occasions).

Waiter, Walker and alox Bantam are exactly my preferred smaller SAKs.
I have other 84mm but they get no pocket time.

Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum. I would like to introduce you to my Nylon Scaled Victorinox Waiter that I have modified to be a 'Plus'.  I have owned this SAK for many years, and for a long time it lived in a kitchen drawer! Just over two years ago it became my daily SAK as I started a new job in an office and the Huntsman was a bit too 'outdoorsy' for most people! The Waiter is an ideal 'urban' or office SAK with its small size (one layer and 84mm). However, I felt it needed a little more, so around a year ago I modified the scale to accept the pen and pin, and added the small screwdriver.  Enjoy the photos!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200403/f7b667d9ac39e7450971e42f9dded2bc.jpg)

Thank you.  Modifying the scales to 'plus' was not too difficult. I used the file/saw tool from SwissChamp to file the groove for the pen - it is the perfect width. For the pin slot, again I used the file/saw from SwissChamp, but used it at an angle of about 45degrees to put a little 'notch' into the scale.

This is also my first modification of a SAK (apart from adding original Plus scales to my Huntsman), as the Waiter is only 84mm, I have not been able to find any new original scales so had to modify them!

Nice mod GL. The addition of a pen is particularly useful for urban office environment. I have also filed down my tweesers. I find a pointed tip much easier to pick things up than the stock flat. I got this idea from a Swiss gentleman from youtube. I can post a link to show how he did it if it doesn't violate the rules here.

Thanks for all of the positive comments. In reply to the pin hole, I believe the newer cellador scales already have a pin hole. My Waiter is an older nylon scaled 'economy' version from about 18 years ago, so didn't come with the pin hole.

I like the idea of the pointed tweezers - I may have to borrow this modification!

As my Nylon scales were looking a little worn, and with a bit of time on my hands with the current virus situation. I decided to have a go at making some wood scales.  These are my first attempt. I have used some light oak and have made them 'plus' to include pin and pen along with tweezers and toothpick.  The scales could do with a little more work as the tools are a bit stiff to remove and replace. Overall I am pleased with the results. Hope you like! (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200415/51bc305f38d718b20f72a6c365f66629.jpg)

Very nice GL  :like:  I have been thinking of doing a similar mod to my other sak. Do you mind briefly sharing how you did it? Did you use any power tools or just sand paper?  Thanks.
Title: Re: The Victorinox Waiter Appreciation Society
Post by: GreyLife on April 15, 2020, 04:05:47 PM
Thanks, no power tools were used! It was mainly done using tools from SwissChamp and Leatherman. The fine finishing was all sandpaper, finishing with 1000 grit paper and teak oil. The grooves for the tools were done with the file/saw from SwissChamp, and for fine finish wrapped sandpaper around the file.  To get the initial positions of the rivets, I gently squeezed the SAK and wood in a soft jaw vice and then used the chisel tool from SwissChamp to 'drill' the holes until the wood lay flat against the side of the SAK. Finally I used superglue to hold the scales on. Hope this helps!

It is a Victorinox Waiter that I have....if you look at my previous post you will see it was a nylon economy scaled Waiter....and there is a split ring too! On the front side of the main blade are the words "VICTORINOX SWITZERLAND STAINLESS ROSTFREI" on the reverse is "OFFICIER SUISSE" along with the small cross and crossbow. Found this on the Home Depot website. A knife set and block that not only includes a Waiter, but a place for it in the block. Pretty neat, but I keep a full-sized Nogent Le Kim in my block, and I'm sure the Waiter would end up in my pocket; even though I already have and use one.

Small cans, yeah, my Waiter and Bantam do just fine. Big cans; I opened a huge can of green beans with my Bantam a few months back, and it was really testing on the pins.

Found this on the Home Depot website. A knife set and block that not only includes a Waiter, but a place for it in the block. Pretty neat, but I keep a full-sized Nogent Le Kim in my block, and I'm sure the Waiter would end up in my pocket; even though I already have and use one.

That is neat, haven’t seen that before!  :tu:

I’m posting this with pride. My dad came over the other day, he is at risk so social distancing is a must. We had a beer and I asked him if he wanted me to open it. He states “No thanks, I have that Swiss Army Knife you gave me.”
And, BOOM! Out comes the waiter I gave him! So happy!

True, but you know how Victorinox is (was) with model names...
"Early Alox scaled models (see 2230xx Identifiers below) featured a regular cap-lifter, rather than the combo-tool opener, and had horizontally ribbed scales. These models were known as the Waiter at the time, but more closely resemble the current Alox Bantam."

Mostly true. ‘Regular’ caplifter...except that it’s 100% reversed or symmetrical to what I’d call a regular one. I wouldn’t bother with owning this Waiter if not for this distinction.

Either Bantam has a Combo Tool.

The waiter (not sure- did it used to be called bartender? ) it is a thing of beauty- Unobtrusive, light weight and oh so functional. I’m a big fan of the corkscrew for its plethora of uses However most recently the tweezers came in quite handy- as a make shift lock pick set  - when I was locked out of my shop on a rural property.

There was always something that annoyed me on the Waiter - something did not feel right, especially when putting it into pocket or pulling it out.

I realized it was the key ring - the standard size is I believe too large for such a thin knife. I replaced it with the smaller one from 58mm models and all is good now. Finally it feels right!

Excellent point. I generally don’t like keyrings or the lug for them. But I’ve had a few show up over the years with the small ring and they seem to make more sense on a knife like a Waiter or Cadet.

I haven't posted anything in a while, so here's my Waiter, tarted up (classed-up?)in white cellidor, doing its thing.

Not that "waiter" isnt a badass profession, but I too feel like the name "bartender" is more suited to this model.

I have two Stayglow Climbers left - a user and one in an unopened box, both from the days when they were in the ballpark of of $25. REEEEEEEEEALLY wrestling with the urge to yank a pair of scales and make a Stayglow Serrated Spartan...

Edit: ooops...kinda confused two different threads. Oh well.

I’m still having trouble ever choosing knives this thin/small/few tools. Even as their numbers increase in the collection for dating purposes.

And on that note, I think the earliest of the Waiters/Bartenders with the then ‘new’ Combo Tool are more like ‘77 than ‘78, as I previously estimated. Close to where I think the green flocked box liners were introduced.

Did I need a waiter? Probably not, but I’m happy I picked one up. It pairs nicely with my Spirit or Wave to add the corkscrew (and eyeglass screwdriver for the spirit), tweezers, and toothpick. It’s slim and fits into a sheath or disappears into pocket. It duplicates the knife and cap lifter, but so does my compact that pairs with my PST to add scissors and the scale tools. 84mm plus scales would be a nice addition, but I’m not sure if such scales exist. I believe there at one point was a waiter plus at 91mm, but not 84mm.

I do prefer the 84mm length. It’s too bad the 84mm golfer is so rare and expensive.

Actually it is not that difficult to add a pen to the 84mm scales. I did it to my Waiter using file from 111mm knife. The width of the file was just right to fit the pen.

That’s good to know. I assume there’s an unopened slot like in the non-plus 91mm scales? I’ve seen the Felix Immler video about that but never tried it.

Oh I see now. Thanks for linking your post. That seems doable and probably worth the trial and error for the pen as I actually use the compact pen. I may try it with my swisschamp or spirit file.

Can the waiter handle opening a giant bottle of cheap wine? Yes…but with a lot of elbow grease. These big boys need 4 or more layer SAKs to open. I’ll take this as a sign to stick to the smaller bottles.

I have a suggestion.  Don't screw the corkscrew most of the way in and then pull the cork straight up.  Screw the corkscrew all the way in, until the opening of the bottle is pressing hard against the back of the knife.  Continue turning until the cork starts to rotate inside the glass.  Continue turning as you draw the cork out.

Oh and here it is with my PSTII to compliment. I only did some office work today so the PST mostly stayed in the sheath - I think used the flat head as a pry bar, the scissors, and the pliers for some work on the printer. It was frustrating, hence the wine and beer.

Brand new waiter ready for some action.  :salute:
In my quest for the perfect edc sak for all my occasions I my run across, I have now picked up the waiter. This is my going out in the summer heat knife. Slips prefect in shorts and won't weigh pocket down. 84mm blade perfect for cutting limes, combo for beer openings, and corkscrew for my lady's wine needs.
I have ordered 84mm white scales but for now I am enjoying the red scales till they come from Ukraine. Added black tweezers, toothpick and mini screwdriver. Pin will come with white scales which I will also add pen slot for a 84mm waiter plus.

That’s the best use of a SAK!  Is he a Maltese or bichon?

No limes and corona for us in the end it was just a bottle of wine.  I posted earlier about the corkscrew being tricky on big bottles, but this one came out just fine.

Well I am a fan of the beer. But  one day a few years back I saw this on EBay and picked it up for under $10 I believe.

Looks like they just glued and put a finish  over a label. It is smooth in the hand and feels good.

Sometimes it catches my eye like today and in the pocket it goes.

Just thought I'd share.

This is a bit late in the thread, but I have been looking at the waiter I recently got and thinking that perhaps the waiter with plus scales is more spot on. I realize actual  waiters tend to carry like 10 pens, but in the fantasy having that extra backup just in case is heroic.

I had just enough material to make one set of bone and cracked the back one so just put the front one on for fun and decided to keep it. I don't change them often. The Micarta were on for a couple of years. The front scale has a glow in the dark cross.which is fun.
