Title: House of Styx
Post by: styx on December 03, 2017, 05:48:00 PM
Since some here find my jacksmurfery to be entertaining, welcome to the mind of a cynic.

First I'd like to thank Poncho for the name of this thread. Here is to you and your health

So last week this started my hour long rant (still shorter than the lecture)...
I'm starting to date a bit more again so I tend to run into all kinds of people. Last Saturday, for instance, I was lectured on a bit of a controversial topic (so I will not be sharing it here because I love this place) for 72 minutes. I timed it. After that the lady was bumfuzzled by my statement that if we were to continue seeing each other I'd have to take up very serious drinking (at least 4 nights in the week I'd have to hold on to the floor for dear life because the room would be spinning so much)

72 min is a long time to listen to a rant indeed.
What was the subject? You can PM me if you like, I promise not to rant.  :D

This sounds like it will be a good thread.

I´m not that curious. Anyhow, most secrets are interesting for their keepers only.

Hope the new house will be to your liking (and ours)!

Is this one of these Star Trek Klingon threads? May this thread bring honor to the House of Styx!

Ok, I'm curious too - 72 minutes is a long rant on a date for sure!  :D

So.....I might be assuming here.......but it was a date?  So you don't know here?  And she goes off for more than an hour?

Biggest mistake I made in the last 10 years was not running the other way  :salute:

Since it was unprovoked, the topic didn't come up in any way, shape or form, I was intrigued how long it could last after the first 3 minutes. Oddly this was an improvement over the last few that I affectionately named after the biggest nuclear disasters in human history

And ofc I forgot to say this...

Public service announcement time:
If you are stopped by an officer of the law, asked for your documents and if you could open your bag, please for the love of MTo and all holy MTs show them the gym gear before showing the compartment with a big block of white substance that easily falls apart into a fine powder

On the other hand, it is pretty funny to see someone taste lifting chalk

Do they actually do that? I mean, I don't see how it is a good idea to do drugs while working. Also, do they do so much drugs they know different kinds by taste? What if it wasn't a drug but something that was in no shape or form suitable for human consumption?  :ahhh

I really hope you were able to look at MTO on your phone during that borefest. I cant think of a single activity I could do for 78 minutes without being distracted by 10 other things. You should have whipped out a SAK and started explaining its merits for an hour, that I would have loved to see

Actually I was amazed. Didn't even want to interrupt her just to see how long it can go. To be fair my mind was on GVT the whole time as I was researching it and some things weren't adding up.

Now to be fair I caught myself on one date years ago explaining how to change a faucet to the young lady (early 20s)

"Only" 48% indeed!

When I was in Croatia, I had moonshine slivovice of 70 to 80 %.

Exactly why I say only 48%.

There is a saying in Slavonija - "Smurf a man who has more plumb jam than šljivovica (plumb schnapps) in his home."
And I may joke that it is used as a medicine to everything, but it isn't far from the truth. While most people would consider putting some hard liquor in their tea a somewhat ok thing to do when running a high fever, we also put it on rags that are wrapped around the ankles and wrists to help bring a high fever down, and in some cases use it as a chest rub (vapour rub). Oddly enough it works.
A lot of other home remedies include either using different sorts of liquor or making it from scratch. Orahovac for instance (schnapps made from walnut) is amazing for calming down an upset stomach and even when one has the runs.
I remember explaining how to make blackberry wine to a friend in the states because he and his mother were recovering from cancer. Can't say that it was a miracle drug but their recoveries were a lot faster and better.
There are a ton of herbal schnapps variants that help with everything. Honey schnapps (I'd get quartered for saying it is the same thing as mead) helps with soar throat. Wine grape schnapps is marvellous for toothache.

And one thing that isn't considered hard liquor is propolis. I think you can get it just about anywhere in the world. Basically it is some sort of bee antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral product that is diluted with 96% alcohol (I think, might be 94). Cures just about anything but you have to dose it right - 1 drop for every 10kg (22lbs) of body weight.

Oh and do note that orahovac and višnjevac (cherry schnapps) can come in a wide range of alcohol percentages so they can be considered a liquor (think more like cream whiskey) or hard liquor. Together with Honey schnapps they are the most evil things to drink as they have a sweet flavour and you don't know that you've had enough until you try to stand up and realize it is a Herculean task

Cool! What were you talking about Styx?

The organization I volunteer in. It is mostly about type 1 diabetes and it's correlation to sustainable life. Since type 1 diabetes has a genetic component you can't really influence that, but the rapid rise in those who have it can't be explained by genetics. The factors that can explain it are environmental. And although this sounds a lot like hippy ecology talk, it was more focused on doing what we can for our small scale environment. For instance our nutritional habits which in English are called with the phrase diet. That word would conjure up something that we go on for 3 to 6 weeks before summer, weddings and so on. What we promote is finding a way which is sustainable for the long term for that person that would prevent chronic disease or prevent complications if such a condition already exists. So while our president is geared towards vegan and mostly raw food, I am personally more geared towards counting calories (I've gone down about 12kg/27lbs in 96 days), some people have amazing results with ketogenic diets, the bottom line is follow what you are comfortable with and what supports your health.
Another big part of the interview was how and what we do to support families with kids that have type 1 diabetes.

I'll put up a link once it is up on their webpage. Although I'm not sure if that will help you considering it is all in Croatian.

Very cool man!

Thanks. Now if only someone started paying me for those things (I've become the go to person for public presentations in the second organization in a row)

Now since the season of dreadful (I'll explain later) is coming, I'd like to set aside my hillbilly antics for a moment (and they truly are in every sense of the word) and ask you to ponder on the following...

The world is unspeakably large and it is also gloriously small. The large world can hardly be described, but the small one is the one that truly matters. That small world is made out of our families, friends, co-workers, neighbours, the people we've let into our lives, the communities that matter to us. And some of those worlds are not doing all too well. No matter how paltry their troubles might seem, no picayune they are to us, just a scintilla of effort can turn them around. The words one person can't change the world, can't save the world should fall on deaf ears because we all can do it. The only proper response to such asininity should be to defiantly and proudly say "Hold my beer and watch this".

Now the reason why I say the season of dreadful is because the upsurge of donate and help organizations, ads and campaigns spikes during the upcoming holidays. The real problem is that many give the smallest bill available to ease their consciousness and even the organizations and promoters simply act as if those in need stop existing for the next 345 days. Ticks me off to no end

What bothers me is that many good causes are financed by lotteries. People will help, if there´s a chance of winning big time. I´m not saying they won´t help otherwise, but it bothers me still.

well as a fellow lifetime nutrition enthusiast here, studies show that chemical components in mainly animal foods, dairy included, have an impact on the development and incidence of Type 1 diabetes in new and younger generations, as a result of accumulation in their mother's bodies.

As a result, many  scientists, physicians and renowned figures in the world of human nutrition recommend switching to a vegan or plant based diet for better health (apart from fighting obesity, CVD, type diabetes 2, environmental impact, gas emissions, antibiotic dependency and accumulation, etc.)  and unparalleled results

Type 1 diabetes was lethal until the 20s and since then there's been no way to avoid being born with the disease but  luckily nowadays it's easily treated with insulin, therapy and diet. Ketogenic diets have proven very useful in fighting against leukemia, Alzheimer and both types of diabetes especially.   :tu:

Keto diets also show very good results for weight loss, skin health, and many other small(er) health improvements.

LCHF diets are very similar in macro proportions and are very well studied for treating many metabolic diseases with great success, and even improving the body's performance in physical activity (dozens of athletes, bodybuilders, and very active sportsmen and women have noticed improvement in their abilities, longer term beneficial health effects...) battling the myths of "carb loading", "can't build muscle without animal protein" and "carbohydrates are necessary macronutrient for the correct functioning of the human body"   :twak:

It's a fascinating new subject of study that fights the Food Pyramid and Nutrition bases written and formulated by the USDA and backed (and financed) by the industry for 50 years, unveiling the big companies' efforts to make us believe that all we were forced or motivated to eat was healthy, good for us and backed up by (crooked, manipulated) science leading to the real sad SAD  (Standard American Diet) that now has shockwaved to most other countries in the world

sorry for the rant, I just had to leave it there

Well you are right. Vegan diets are not for everyone though.
One thing I would add is that LCHF diets have one thing going against them - lack of long term studies. Mostly due to them being on the fringes outside of certain circles until recently.

One thing I stress is that there isn't a one size fits all solution. And even the solutions presented are templates and objects to use in creating something personalized. For instance a vegetarian diet wouldn't work long term in my household (expensive, lack of quality foods that would replace the nutritional values that different meats give, certain drugs not mixing well with green vegetables, etc.) but what works is that we have 3 days where all meals are vegetarian or pescetarian (if fish were more readily available at a better price it would probably be a day or 2 more). I'm fairly young so it is hard to gauge the health effect, but I have no problem with energy or muscle mass. What I've lost is due to calorie restriction and weight loss, not some bs excuse. My mother on the other hand has had a very positive effect on her health as we switched to the current dietary habits.

I spent Christmas 1991 in Bosnia, in a small farmer´s village, birthplace of my brother-in-law.

He was the only person there I could talk to even though I speak Dutch and English well, and German adequately, But many people there at the time spoke only their own language, and maybe  Russian if they had had an education. Furthermore, because of some small brain disorder I have troubles interpreting and responding to body language. More accurately,  I don´t even notice it.

Everybody was very nice and kind, food and drink were excellent and plentiful, but it was a difficult stay for me.

It does not sound odd. Not to make for of the French, but french sounds odd to me. Maybe taking 4 years of Latin (which I forgot most of it) has something to do with it. I am spit baling here , but the language sounds a bit Russian like. Or it sounds a bit Russian like to me. Either way, it was cool to hear you on the broadcast.

Slavic languages sound very similar to one another. If you listened to Russian, Ukrainian, Polish and Czech for instance you probably couldn't tell the difference, maybe just that they were dialects

Well I can't believe that I had this conversation today but I guess this proves that jokes are based on real life.

So I'm in a mall to check something out and I'm heading towards the escalator. It isn't working and the girl in front of me is having a hissy fit. Looking around for someone who looks like they work there to give them a piece of her blonde mind. Since she was moving frantically like the Tasmanian devil, I couldn't get around her so I asked what the problem is. She started ranting about how now she can't get to the 1st floor because the escalator is busted. So I tell her where the other escalator is, where the elevators are and then I made the mistake of pointing out that non running escalators are stairs. Apparently that mind blowing calculation was above her comprehension because the response was "What?! How?!".

How many of you are familiar with story cubes? Basically they are cubes with different figures, items and so on on them and a random roll determines what one has to use in a story.

Now the question is who is talented enough and crazy or bored enough to try and make a few MTO cubes?

is it just me or is there a trend of tailoring down clothes to what seems hobbit size? this past Saturday I actually got kicked out of a shop for asking the sales girl if she could show me where they keep mens pants because all I could find were anorexic dwarf sized

First things first.

Have the doorways in your house turned smaller as well?
If so, the problem might be with yourself...

Second: have you moved to an Asian country?
I usualy find their sizes to be 1 off
(Medium = Small)

Next: is the store selling Asian made clothes?

And most off all, how big where the salesgirl's boots if she managed to kick you out?
Was it Lynda?! :dd:

I hate the trend of "Chinos" very baggy in the seat (often with the crotch worn down near the knees) and very tight around the lower legs.

wasn't the sales girl that did the kicking out. wish she did 'cause that would have been funny to see. can you imagine a barely 160cm, maybe 54kg girl trying to toss someone out?

now to your questions:
1 - not that I've noticed, but then again I've been hitting my shoulder on the same damn doorframe for 23 years now
2 - no
3 - isn't everything made in Asian countries these days?

fun thing, "Chinos" in Spanish means "Chinese people" but generally said in a despective way. Like saying "look, that man standing there is a Chino" or "all those you see there are Chinos" to mean it in an insulting and impolite way   :P

The same word is used for $0.99 stores where you can find almost anything for cheap and low quality, so it's another name for "Chinese made quantity over quality" type of stores.

if you say "I bought this ---- in the Chinos" it means you got it at the cheapest price and probably cheapest quality possible  :salute:

so apparently I'm quite useful for intimidation

my grandmother bought some carpets, one they had when she bought 'em and the other was supposed to be delivered yesterday. since it wasn't my mother went to the store today to ask what is going on. to put it mildly they were not cooperative or friendly. then she went back but asked me to tag along. the manager saw her, opened his mouth to say something, then saw me walk in behind her and suddenly remembered he had some urgent business. oddly the missing carpet was found within 3 minutes.

and i didn't even get to do the Scent of a woman speech (I'd bring a flamethrower to this place)

i got canned a few weeks in. asking a sensible question was apparently a big no no. the funny part is that if I didn't get canned on monday, I would've gotten on friday that same week. there was an issue my former boss has been trying to figure out a solution to for about 2 years. i talked some of the details over with the other staff and had a solution in 4 hours. the guy was so steamed about it that he gave me paid time off while i was on my 2 weeks notice just so that he wouldn't have to deal with me

Oh man....... Sucks, sorry to hear.

Ran into an old colleague today, one of the hardest working people I've ever known, but not a self-promoter.  After 11 years at his previous job he got worked out by a new boss and his new buddies.  >:(
What makes me so angry is I heard from other acquaintances that Leon never changed from his hard-working ways, never rested on his laurels after putting a lot in order after he started.  To add insult to injury, he's a very friendly and pleasant guy.....

I'm so sick of work politics and backstabbing.....I can only fix stuff, can't play those games

not necessarily. but that type of quantifying something is at the vary least problematic since it doesn't take into account the culture and socio-economic factors that do play a big part.
if you really want to give yourself a debate over how good you are when it comes to EQ, read up on emotional literacy. there is a pdf with under 15 pages and you can get more than just the basics out of it. if you are already doing some of the "do 'em" things then you're good, if you're hitting all the "don't do" parts then you might want to learn a thing or two from the pdf

First issue with the beard trimmer. Stalled, fortunately while I was close to done. I'm fixing it now, good thing it has a warranty

Next time I'm getting a shrub trimmer. And I know someone will comment on that...

Congratulations on the new job, styx!

I've mostly (mostly) stopped using a trimmer and use scissors, a long pair and a short pair. You might try it.

......and for your beard.....perhaps a set of hedge clippers?

today's idea - if a woman can tell who's lyrics are these without google, one should immediately get hitched

It's been a long time since I rock and rolled
It's been a long time since I did the Stroll
Oh let me get it back let me get it back
Let me get it back baby where I come from

It's been a long time been a long time
Been a long lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely time
Yes it has
It's been a long time since the book of love
I can't count the tears of a life with no love
Carry me back carry me back
Carry me back, baby, where I come from

It's been a long time, been a long time
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time
Seems so long since we walked in the moonlight
Making vows that just can't work right
Open your arms, opens your arms
Open your arms, baby, let my love come running in
It's been a long time, been a long time
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time

Always a terrible feeling to have your space violated by scum. I was robbed once (sort of my fault for leaving the door unlocked) and it really annoyed me. I think it's the disrespectful behavior more than anything else that is so maddening.

what makes me mad is the fact that people in this building know who i sleeping with whom, who got a new car/bike/flat/anything and all sorts of other gossip but they are suddenly all deaf and keep to themselves when something like this happens. even worse is that they open the doors for anyone without checking who it is, people go up and down the stairs and no one bothered to call the police after seeing the door busted and a ton of papers tossed around the hallway

Never felt the need. Some of my dedicated wire cutters look a little raggedy, but they still work, so I don't worry about it.   :dunno:

Title: Re: House of Styx
Post by: styx on August 30, 2019, 09:57:57 PM
I had a great time. The most important question is what gear did I take - only a Vic Hunter. Well a day pack that I've had for years now, swimming trunks and fins and my trusty Nalgene bottle. To be fair I only once wished that I had a more robust fixie and a folding saw to clean up one trail a bit. The Hunter saw a good bit of use for food prep, cutting and opening a few cans. Since we were in a house and later an apartment, not much else was needed. Ofc there is a kit that never leaves that day pack which includes a signal mirror, a whistle and a sillcock key.

As far as first aid goes, there were the usual things for aches, a few feet of band aids and combined we had about 5m (15ft) of elastic bandages in case of sprains.

To start off we spent a few days in the village of Pirovac which is often called Zlo selo (Evil village), a name given to it by the Ottomans. We also visited Šibenik and 2 of it's 3 land fortresses. The one sea fortress was seen later from a ferry.
Pirovac used be a quiet small village but now it is quite filled with tourists and the usual touristy stuff - over priced bars, restaurants both of which work only during the season, souvenir shops and just about every other attraction. Since we were about 10 to 15 minutes from the marina where most of those things are it was rather quiet and we got a chance to relax. Some of it's beaches aren't entirely restructured so one can get a mishmash of pebbles and concrete but that is more towards the very edges. Very nice if you have younger children and actually quite a nice place to go on SUPs. There are a good number of boats and jet skis so caution has to be taken. Not sure if the measurement on Google maps can be trusted (I'm iffy on the starting point) but we had a tendency to go for about a 1km (about 3000 feet) swim there (total distance).
Later we went on the island Prvić for a few days. That is an island were you can't really get any signal, there are about 400 people living on it and I believe they have maybe 4 smaller tractors that help with transporting goods. No other traffic on the island at all. It was great. They have a pensioner's retreat, a few nicer beaches for younger children and for anyone adventurous a lot of natural beaches that require a bit of hiking and climbing. the wares can get a bit choppy from the wind and sea traffic but no one goes too close so an inflatable kayak is a really good option to go from one settlement to the other. Freediving is also quite nice but you'll need stiffer or longer fins to cope with the currents and waves once they start. Plus more I'm glad I have plastic ones rather than something high end like carbon as they would get ruined on all the rocks. The water is crystal clear and urchins are all around, so tweezers can come in handy. There again we hand our same longer distance swims and dives to explore a bit of the coast and just have fun. But there is also at least one hiking trail that is not really official. Some local marked it on stones and it hasn't been kept up all too well. But since this is probably one person doing it out of passion, I can't really fault that. That's why I wish I had a larger saw and a sturdy fixie with me so I could clean it up a bit from dead trees and branches that at times had me bear crawling. That is probably the only thing we didn't take pictures off as most of the trail was loose rock, trees, brush and possibly snakes on one side and steep cliffs on the other side.

All in all it was fun

yep. we'll be looking at inflatable kayaks for the next year to have additional options of exploring. plus there are a lot of old goat trails that lead to hidden bunkers

Sounds great, Styx.  :tu:

it was about 28 Fahrenheit there without the wind. and closer to 14 Fahrenheit with the wind. needless to say we're looking into proper fleece mid layers.while I like wool, my girlfriend is not a fan at all and might be allergic. plus for the price of one good wool mid layer we can get 4 or 5 pieces of fleece

I hear that. Fleece is so reasonable, and with great performance.

I'm slightly allergic to wool as well, but Merino wool does not trigger the reaction... It is however even more expensive, so might not be the solution you're looking for  :pok:

My fleece vest is one of my favorite pieces of kit.

It's 10 or more years old. It is a bit worn, has a few singed spot from popping campfire embers, but it still completely functional (and is mostly presentable). It gets carried year-round. In Winter it serves as a mid-layer. In Spring and Fall it may be a primary outer layer or get paired with a rain shell. In Summer it gets carried for cool mornings or evenings. A true 4-season garment.

Really versatile, easy to layer with other stuff. I wouldn't be without one.  :tu:

:iagree: A fleece vest is an integral part of any layering system.

got back yesterday in the middle of the night from a 4 day vacation. we had some yard clearing work to do and I gotta say that the '08 soldier, bahco laplander and leuku did everything perfectly. ofc me being a bit clumsy and working near a stone fence resulted in the leuku getting some chips in the blade, but nothing that can't be fixed

Well people, I have to admit I've been a bit secretive lately but my family has grown and in about 6 months it will be even larger.

First, since yesterday there is a Mrs. Styx

Got the call yesterday while we were in the middle of the move - my grandfather died. This was the man who first put a screwdriver, pliers and an axe in my hands

Ohhh.... very sorry.

I only knew one of my Grandfathers. He was a wonderful man. He was the one who gave me my first knife (SAK) and who taught me to shoot and the importance of compost. A very special man in my life.

You were very lucky to have a good Grandfather!  So sorry for your loss.

Congratulation to the Styx family!  I just found this thread and stayed up to read through the whole thing.
I'm praying you will have lots of good adventures to write about.
But first: What is the little bugger's name, and what is to be his first MT?

dc

his name is Marjan Josip. as far as his first MT, it will probably be something from Victorinox. considering I keep losing my SAKs to my wife and my mother, he will probably go in that direction as well
