Title: Your on the go sharpening kit
Post by: Anthony on January 30, 2009, 02:37:58 AM
So everyone can have a tabletop Sharpmaker and set up rods and whatnot...but what kind of kit do you have that you can take "on the go", as in outdoors?  A kit that can fit in the palm of you hand or a pocket.

I got those pen like diamond coated rods, and lansky triangle stone that's half the length of sharpmaker stick. Although I think I've sharpened one knife with them and it was a buddy's. Sharpened a lot of fishing hooks with the lansky stick thou.

Usually a Fallkniven DC3 or DC4 sharpener...best pocket stones I've used. (http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/2803/thumbup6ly.gif)

I did make this wallet strop/sharpener with a DMT extra fine plate. I use it mostly for pocket blades.

Good suggestions; I ended up going the route Cgjones and Spork were on with flat, rectangular "stones".

I just ordered this lot from ragweedforge.com...these three are all relatively small "traditional" supplies.  The diamond stone isn't exactly traditional, but I assume the technique is very similar to an actual STONE.  The viking and Finnish stones are more for the final edge.  There's good descriptions of them at www.ragweedforge.com

Two sided diamond plate
Viking whetstone
Finnish whetstone

Lansky puck sharpener (for my hatchets and machetes)
And how can you order from Ragnar without getting another Mora?  You can't!  I also got a Mora #1 8)

A great vid I'm sure was posted here before, but interesting.  I think that's the exact diamond plate I'm getting with the sleeve and all...

I have a Smith's Pocket Pal knife sharpener that my brother gave me.  It's got ceramic, carbide and diamond sharpeners.  Really good for touching up hollow and flat ground blades but if I need to reprofile something else, I will have to have my brother use his professional lanksy system on it.

That's a DC4 Mears is using in that video...I use the ceramic side more than the diamond

I have a bladetech carbide sharpener that I could take, but TBH I'd hope the knives I have have good enough edge retention to last me for the short period of time I'd be outside using them.

 Besides your on the go kit what does everyone use to sharpen with :)

I mainly use my Sharpmaker but I also have a large bench stone don't really know what kind a guy from work gave it to me :D and a DMT smaller diamond stone and a Smith 2 in 1 sharpener which gives a good edge without much effort on a lot of my knives :tu:

I got varying result with all of the above except for the Sharpmaker though :D

There's a double-sided Diafold model that is Extra Fine/Ceramic that I've been eyeballing  :P - Link (http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=DMTCFWE)

I have quite a few of the Diafolds but I prefer the EZ lap products because they have solid plates. My favorite is the double-sided Medium/Super Fine - Link (http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=EZL510)

MIke,

Love the ingenuity....must try that sometime  :salute:

The bottom of ceramic coffee cups or bowls works decently if it's just a touch up. Though I was able to take a SAK from fairly dull to a working edge this way. On the ceramic coffee cups or bowls, I feel for a relatively smooth, bare ceramic edge to work with. Find one that doesn't have any (or too many) bumpy parts in it. Then just work it the best you can. I mean, all the cool kids do this. :D

A note on the DC3/4's is that they feel incredibly rough to start with.  This does wear down quite quickly and you are left with a much more forgiving surface.

I found the pen type diamond rod doesn't work well for some reason, so just bought a lansky pocket hard arkansas stone. Tried it on kitchen pairing knife and it seems to work well, will have to wait and see if it works on harder steel.

 I was wondering if it would be a good idea or not to carry a smallish piece of leather rolled up for a on the go type strop

When I bought the remnant of leather for my strops that I made I have plenty enough to make another or 2 but I could cut a 3 inch by 9 inch piece and maybe add a leather string to it to roll it up and also to hook it to something for a strop :D

So what do you guys think :) Yes or no or what in the world is this guy thinking :pok: :D

I always have a leather belt on me as well but I would almost rather carry the leather than take my belt off  :D

but this is why I asked the question thanks Gareth :tu:

The leather would be in my coat pocket and not in my pants pocket and I just wear that coat to work and then put a heavier 1 on when I get there so it's not like I will be carrying with me at all times just to have close by ;) should have mentioned that earlier as well ::) :D

I have a Victorinox sharpener for softer knives. Not too great, but OK in the field.

When it comes to travel - rent holiday houses tend to have the dullest knives ever - I usually bring one good knife and my Byrd Duckfoot sharpener. It´s not as good as my Sharpmaker, but faster and it puts a quite good working edge on most knives in no time. Love it!

Still, I may get a DC3/DC4 some day, for I never heard anything bad about them.

Here's something else to try, that I kind've stumbled upon.  I have two small, three inch long whetstones.  One fell and broke into pieces.  I looked at the small pieces, and put one in my wallet.  Anytime I really need to sharpen a knife, I take it out and go to town.  Your technique may need to be improvised a little, but it works in a pinch.

I don't have a pic of it by itself, but I carry a speedysharp everywhere I go. It's a perfect piece of kit that'll not just sharpen my knife or mt or whatever. It'll sharpen axes, lawnmower blades, even a stick of rebar if the need may arise. My pics aren't workin' at present, but it's basically a pocket carbide cut off tool.

Not only no, but HELL NO!!! It's simply a small cutoff tool. A small piece of diamond polished carbide welded to a handle. Here's pics of my do-it yerself, Cold Steel Ghurka Kukri Piggyback Kydex Sheath. Pics are pretty dark, but it's a double pocket for a firesteel & a sharpener that doubles as a firesteel striker.

So far it is holding up well.I bought it a year and a half ago.
I also need to get some different grits, fine works well but when
I get a really dull knife it would be a lot faster to get an edge with
a medium grit.

I've got one of these little Gerber pocket ceramic things.... think it needs cleaning though, do you chaps think just doing the hot water and soap thing will work?

With whatever sharpening stones, tools or devices I use I also have a 10x Hastings triplet magnifier loupe.  I use this to examine the bevel and edge to make sure it's done right.

Yes, it's a diamond coated plate bonded to a ceramic stone. You'll probably use the ceramic more often if you keep the edge up. That and a strop should keep you shaving sharp.

That's a D4 (D for diamond)...what you want is a DC4 (diamond/ceramic)

I believe they started to sell just the plates so they could be glued onto their thermoplastic sheaths.

Another Pocket stone that I like is the Spyderco Doublestuff (http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=87) - same ceramics as on their Sharpmaker. It's an extra inch longer and easier to hold.
