Title: A couple old wrenches
Post by: AJ on May 26, 2008, 02:16:14 AM
After reading the a few old tools (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,4801.0.html) topic I decided to see if anyone could tell me anything about these two wrenches.

I bought the smaller one on ebay a couple years ago after first seeing them online.

I just bought the larger one this weekend at a antique store were I stop a couple times a year just to look at there old tools.

The old man in the store seem to know a lot about some of the other tools he had around there, but said he never seen one like that before.

Searching B&C online I found this site with some info on them.

Now that I have two I can call it a collection right? :)

Those are pretty neat! :)  Bemis & Call eh? Never heard of them, although they appear to share some history with Coes (same company that made Benner's wrench)

Wonder why the handle has such an exaggerated S-shape? What advantage would there be?

I've seen plumber's use similar tool's so they can avoid hitting pipes and stuff, hope this helps :)

I have no more info to add unfortunately, but they do look like interesting pieces.  :)

Are these just shelf queens now?

Yes, they just hang on the wall in the garage for now.

I still use mine from time to time.  They are so well built it seems a shame to not use them.

I like the look of those wrenches the offset could be handy in tight spots and you could also add some extra torque becasue of the offset as well  At least I think it would  :D

In a solid tool (with no mechanical advantage), only the length of the handle should affect the maximum torque that can be applied to the fastener.

torque = force applied X length of the lever arm

Unless, for some reason, you could apply more force to the wrench, which I don't believe is the case here.
