Title: Island Beach Fishing
Post by: TazzieRob on April 28, 2017, 05:00:39 AM
Back in March I headed over to Flinders Island for a long weekend with my Dad and Step Mum. (photos from Facebook so hopefully it works!)

Dad had been trying unsuccessfully for a while to catch some fish, so I had to go and show him how it's done! I don't fish regularly and in actual fact haven't done any in several years, so a bit of luck with the location and timing of tide and day plus the bait probably helped.

We walked what seemed like a kilometer from the car to get to this spot along the beach, close to the outlet of a creek

Using a double hook and sinker and blue bait, low tide just turning to come in, I got this decent sized little Flathead

Then another, which had followed my bait in before I realised it was there, dropped the hook back into the water and dragged it up on the beach. Then an Australian Salmon, then a double hook

Dad was a bit frustrated still not able to catch anything so I told him to move further back up the beach from where he was and he ended with 2 good sized flatties

I'd run out of beer so I stopped catching anything, but with 7 fish between us, the tide fast coming in, and a setting sun it was time to head for home

I did have my Victorinox Spirit in the backpack but didn't end up using it. One had swallowed the hook so far I had to pull it out of its gut after clean up (I'll claim the knife we had is a multi as it has a fish scaler on the back!  :D)

 Cheers guys. I grew up over there and the fishing is pretty good. The big one I got first gave the three of us a hearty feed!
