I've been using mechanical pencils on a daily basis since taking classes in manual drafting many, many years ago. The best mechanical pencil I've used has been a Pentel P209 0.9mm. I've been using them for years and haven't had one break on me yet, although I've lost a few. I've tried the cheap copies made by OfficeMax, but they typically break eventually. What mechanical pencils do you use? How well do they hold up? What lead size do you prefer?

I used lots 0.3mm & 0.5mm lead in my manual drafting class, since then I never touch pencil again.
Use tons highlighters in my early stage of my career and now everything I do is paperless.

I used to go through several Rotring Tikkis a year due to the tip bending ::) but they were OK pencils too.

I can remember the chrome Cross pens and pencils being very popular for decades. They always felt to slippery for me.

Yes they can be slippery, but to be fair that's a pencil I carry in a suit pocket along with a fountain pen so it doesn't get serious use. More for show really :rofl:

I like 0.7mm leads - F is my favourite, but H is ok. Like the P207 but I keep it in my pocket at work and keep bending the tip so normally go for ones with retractable tubes. I've got a Rotring Rapid Pro which is pleasingly heavy, but the most comfortable pencil I own is a Faber Castell Grip - just seems to fit me really nicely.

That's why I like the graphgears, retractable tube and lower cost than the rotrings. But no noticeable drop in quality

I'm always breaking lead on anything smaller than the 0.9mm, so I stick with 0.9mm unless I specifically need something smaller.

I use mechanical pencils at work and home, mostly for sketching concepts and notes at work, and sketching for fun at home. I used to be all .7mm but found myself switching to .9mm after using a pencil for some home and work projects and enjoying the stouter lead and always sharp looking cut marks. (Never had much fun sharpening carpenters pencils).
I have a quiver of pencils at work, Pentel being my favorite brand, and I rotate thru the week, like a true pencil nerd. My personal findings over the years:
Graphgear 1000: The pencil I want to love, but can't. Not well balanced and the rubber grips amongst the knurling is too slick for me. I wish it was all knurl and no rubber. My worst writing and sketching pencil; just doesn't feel natural, but sure is cool looking.
Graphgear 500: Very secure grip and comfortable (for short to medium sessions). I hate that the pocket clip can slide completely off. That, and the non-retractable tip make it desk-bound and not suitable to travel. Overall a very nice pencil though.
Pentel P209: The balance and feel of this pencil is remarkable, as is the almost cultish-following and positive reviews concerning durability etc. A true winner that I'm excited to use every time it comes thru the rotation.
Pentel Twist Erase Click: I like the clear orange barrel and LOVE the big, clean, always-ready eraser. Very comfortable for long periods of writing and drawing. Can't use it with dirty hands or in the shop; the rubber grip gets nasty, quick.
Bic Velocity: I like the retractable tip and the comfortable grip. I also feel no sentiment for them, so they are my sacrificial pencils. Staged in the truck, garage, toolboxes etc. But I also have one I rotate thru at my work desk. Feels like I could write an essay with it; very comfortable.
Unishift Pipe Lock: I bought this with the intention of EDC and did so for awhile. Then the paint starting wearing on the plastic barrel and the pocket clip got tweaked. I like the unique look, knurling, and retraction/locking mechanism, but hate the eraser and the cheap paint job. I still enjoy using it though.
Pentel Twist Erase Express: Another clear/orange barreled pencil with a hefty eraser. I sketch with this one at home. Not a fancy pencil, but very comfortable to sketch with. The barrel comes off way too easy and the tip doesn't retract, so forget about taking it anywhere.
Pentel Twist Erase GT (.7mm): Finally, a Pentel with a jumbo eraser -and- a retractable tip for EDC. Initially I was really stoked on this pencil, but they never made it in .9mm and I found the "accordian style" rubber grip attracted all sorts of dirt and pocket lint. But, having just fiddled with it during this writing, I have decided to take it to work tomorrow for old-times sake.

I'm a weirdo who prefer wooden pencils and lead holders. Most of the time I use a short lead holder from Koh-I-Noor. https://rsvp-berlin.de/en/online-shop/46/kohinoor/1185/Koh-I-Noor-mechanical-pencil-short Excellent for having with my note book.

Wow they still have mechanical drafting? I thought they stopped that along time ago. I took 7yrs of that/blueprint class back in the day. I always used a small one, like 0.3-0.5mm, anything bigger left too fat of a line, i think i still have one of my old pencils, i always liked one with a knurled grip.

There was a heavy duty mechanical pencil I used at one time. It was a draftsman's pencil. Fairly heavy, all metal and holding the lead like a collet, the lead was advanced by spring cap in the rear. You had to place the tip against your finger to prevent the lead from falling out. Anyone know what that might have been?

I swear by these: Faber Castell TK 4600 (lead holder). I love how balanced it is! It's for drawing mainly, there's a version of it for writting but I prefer the weight on this one better. My handwritting can be very artistic sometimes anyway :whistle:

I completely forgot about them being referred to as lead holders. That's what it was. Now this is jarring my memory from my first drafting class from high school, so long ago. There were a variety of lead sizes. I always gravitated to the thicker lead for non-drafting purposes.

A little bundle of stuff arrived today, including an OHTO Cute 0.5mm mechanical pencil. About 10mm shorter than a P207 with a retractable tip this should make a nice pocket pencil. Feels quite nice in the hand - it's got a metal barrel - though may be a little small in diameter. Only a couple of quid too, so no big deal if it's no good.

I just came across an old Staedtler #77505 0.5mm that I've had since my hand drafting days. It looks to be designed much like the Pental.

Pentel Quicker Clicker for me as well. I love them. I've also used them so long that I have a collection of spare parts. The old ones didn't have a rubber grip, and would last forever... unless you did something stupid to break them, like stick one in a back pocket then sit on a metal bar. Don't ask.
The NEW ones have a rubber grip bit that eventually goes gummy and disintegrates. 'Eventually' meaning after like 9-10 years. Not 'junk', but smurfs me off nonetheless.
.5 mm HB lead preferred, unless I'm doing something where I need the lines more visible, then I'll go to a softer lead.

Still have to try them out and find out which one I like the best. The only difference is the thickness and hardness of the lead.
When I got home, I went looking for my old mechanical pencils. I found two I particularly like and use a lot: Staedtler graphite 779 and Fegol L175.

So, Fegol vs. Staedtler!
Not that there's really any comparison between them, but...
Fegol seems lighter and less sturdy/resistant than the Staedtler.
Fegol is all made of plastic, Staedtler has metal clip, push-button and tip.
Both have retractable lead sleeves, which is good for avoiding pocket punctures and also protects the lead sleeve, in case you let the pencil fall.
Staedtler has an added feature: Lead sleeve slides back while writing - additional lead protection (like the bottle opener on Wenger SAKs).
They both have different lead thicknesses: Staedtler .5 - .7, Fegol .5 - .7 - .9
Fegol is a portuguese brand of office supplies, Staedtler a german brand of writing utensils.

Staedtler has a plastic cap inside the button to hold the eraser and to prevent the extra leads to fall. Fegol only has the eraser.
The button on the Fegol has some holes, to avoid possible suffocation if swallowed, the Staedtler doesn't.
They end up being very similar, I like writing with either of them. I do prefer the Staedtler but keep it at home. I carry the Fegol occasionally and even leave it at work sometimes, because I'm not so worried I might lose it.

While I like the concept and challenge of "Using the same pen for 30 days", I use pencil. Mechanical, Rite In The Rain, pencils to be exact. I have a pen attached to my EDC (GnG) pouch but seldom use it. It would be difficult to accomplish such a mention challenge when I am always using the two different colors (Black & Red) for my day-to-day lists, notes and other things. The little cardboard tube is the what the refills come in and can hold several orders of refills in one tube.

I’m going to get the little guy a new pen/pencil, he likes the cheap mechanical pencil, he keeps refilling it, I saw bic has a unique one out, everyone knows that blue and white four ink one they make, but they now have a four in one that is 3+1, three inks plus a pencil, I had two that were metal, was perfect for the job, I still have one but it doesn’t work, he saw it and liked it, but I’m not getting him something expensive for school, and those bic are only like $4,

I kinda did the same, I kinda went a little above what I was asked for to make it easier for the upper management, we’d have to do inventory every day, after done a manager would have to look it over, so I’d use colors to make it easy, so if I found what was needed and the numbers were good then just simple black, then if I found more then what was listed, go blue, but if nothing was found or a lower number, then red, all with a simple click! This way when the manager took a quick look they just found the red numbers looked it over then signed off.

I too use a Staedtler Mars Technico lead holder from time to time. IMO they make the best leads as well.

Oh come on, not an 0.3? I think that’s the one I used to use back in the day for drafting. Yeah they snapped like a (you know) you had to keep that led tip very close to the pencil tip, I want to say 3 clicks was pushing it! But the best part was you didn’t have to rotate the larger pencils to keep a nice thin line! I’ll have to see if I still have it, should, I also have one you’ll never freaking break, heck no!

I liked the graphgear 1000 at first but decided it is too bulky. It is also quite a task disassembling the mechanism to clear out a broken lead. I think you will find the 0.7 is much less prone to breakage.
BTW, Pentel now offers a 1.3mm automatic pencil which while may be too bold for some purposes, will definitely resist breaking!

Here is a older 2mm graphite pencil that isn’t a clutch or mechanical pencil as we know them today...this one you have to unscrew to loosen and then you adjust the length and tighten back up!

One of my summer mechanical pencils...I like the 0.7mm graphite as I don’t break it while writing. It’s the grip that I really like, especially in the summer heat. The sharpie is what I used to mark the date on the filters when changed in the roof top units.

It's crazy to think that an eraser could be that big in a mechanical pencil that takes the same size lead as every other regular mechanical pencil :ahhh :D

The little guy asked me for a diff pencil, he’s been using his cheep plastic one and he loves it but wants something better, yet last year I gave him a nice metal one and of course he lost it.. go fig. But now in high school he says things are diff, I did get him a little unique stocking stuffer, that 3+1, nothing much better then the simple clicker he’s using but it’s a all in one, so idk, he’s either going to love it or hate it, I just don’t want to get him something that he’s just going to lose..

A nice affordable Alvin Draft/matic. The DM05 is a 0.5mm graphite mechanical pencil with a window that rotates and you can have the type of graphite showing. For those who have different usages on multiple pencils with different graphite.

Oh you got to have a very smooth hand, and you can’t click the lead out tooo many clicks! But with very little pressure and a smooth/soft hand it is doable! Kinda funny with someone who was in construction/mechanics, you’d think it wasn’t possible, speaking of construction, I found another unique pencil I have,,
I guess they took that other unique round school pencil that did the same and made it into construction, kinda interesting, once the one gets crappy you just take the tip out and put it in the other end, and low and behold a brand new one comes out..

I have one of those Swanson ones as well :tu: Someone else also made a red plastic carpenter pencil style one that had special lead as well :think: I had a few of those but gave up after a while because it became harder and harder to find lead for it :-\ The lead slid out in increments from what I remember :think: I need to see if I can find it :cheers:

Yeah, one of these, I had one but I have no clue were it disappeared to, I also had one that writes with a wax, absolutely great for what I needed, wrote on anything and since I was marking black pipes, not only did it write but yellow was great! Here’s a pic of my other junk, and you can see the extras to that one, and you can see the other soapstone and that other large wax,,

:iagree: and at my age, I am loosing my grip so I am having to really think about holding a good grip...I would not even attempt a 0.3mm. I could do a 0.5mm with no problems untill 3 years ago. Now I am more comfortable with 0.7mm at the thinnest, and no problems at all. :tu:

Well you are a busybody! I have never tried the flat type graphite. I would just sandpaper a 5.6mm graphite untill I was happy with it.

Here is my Spoke 4 in 0.7mm. The company makes these in different material. They use the time proven Pentel 200 series guts because they work so well. The end result is a even better mechanical pencil.

Those 2.0 pencils are nice, the pic of mine is on the last page, yeah they have the sharpener in the cap but the trick to keeping them sharp is to spin the pencil as your doing whatever,

I have always had my mechanical pencils on the affordable end...untill this one...then it was all down hill after that...especially when I started finding them available in the 2mm clutch pencils. :cheers:

I like the Staedtlers and have a few in different sizes of those. I also bought a Pentel Graphgear 500 at some point, but the hexagonal shape is somehow just not my thing. By a mistake I got sent a Uni Shift some years ago. That one is nice, and especially to just drop in a pocket or similar as it protects its point when not in use. My current favorite is the Uni Kura Toga though. Not because of its constant rotating of the lead inside, but because of its slightly dampened or springy lead point. I guess a side effect of the rotating mechanism, but I find it weirdly pleasant. I can't seem to find it in thicker styles than 0.5 though.
For the few times I use color I find useful to have the mechanical pencil itself in the same color, so I got a few Pilot Color Enos for that.

Was in Tampa today visiting the grandkids and stoped by the storage shed and found a certain car and was asked if I found it, to get some photos. Here is the Caran d’Ache Ecridor Type 55 pencil and rollerball...The pencil is 0.7mm graphite...another one that stays at the house.

In the center is my first "real" mechanical pencil, a Faber-Castell LockTite that I used in the mid 70s when taking a drafting class in high school. To the left is the sharpener.
In front is the .5mm that I upgraded to in the late 70s, a Berol Turquoise. I still use that one to this day.
In the back is a recent acquisition, a Pentel Click Eraser.

Now being raised up in the military these were always around. My first mechanical pencil. This color came out way later. They are a translucent gray or smoke color. These are put together by blind people. The graphite is 1.1mm so just about never breaks when you write with it.

A Caran d’Ache Fixpencil 44...a very nice artist clutch pencil that is long enough in length that you can still hold while working or adjusting/rotating your paper.

I'm a maker, I don't use plans for anything. Here is my favorite pencil, Gerber with .5 lead. I use it for marking where I will cut of bend. The lead is kind of expensive @ $6 for 3 pieces, but it works fantastic for my needs. :tu:

Receiving these just before Christmas from our very own RapidRay :tu: I decided to bring them to work and test them out a bit :tu: the first is a 1.1mm US Government pencil and the next is a 0.7mm Pilot G2 :tu: they are both very nice pencils and seem to be very good writers :like: as you can see in the pic the US Government pencil has a much thicker lead than the Pilot, the US Govt one advances the lead by twisting the eraser end of the pencil vs. The end click of the Pilot :cheers: both are very good and I will probably rotate them in and out of service for work :tu:

I still have my Pentel Sharp Keery, (Black), at least 30 years old. Had a Brown one first a gift from a district manager for controlling OT hours after being promoted, a win win, Staff liked the new flex schedule, and boss liked the reduced payroll ratio for my 7x24 service sites.
Yet, I started using mechanical pencils back in my JR. High days ('65), thin lead, and adopted the .5mm versions when introduced in early '70s when a gifted a simple lead only pencil from my great uncle.
I will have to find and photograph my drafting tools and pencils. Thank I also have a sharpener used with those pencils.
I hated the feel of pencil wood in my hand back in the day, now not an issue. #2 pencils for testing was the norm, and often my mechanical pencils were not allowed for SAT or ACT tests, even military draft exam. :facepalm: But, I survived :woohoo:

An older Caran d’Ache No.77 in a 2mm clutch pencil. The 3 fish was to let the customer know they were getting the best product available. It is a long one at 6.25 inches, very workable as it will stay in your hand while moving things around.

Not really got to write with this one much yet it is the Kuru Toga 0.7mm but I have had the 0.5mm version for over a year and haven't had any issues with it so I am sure that the 0.7mm will be as good or better for me :tu: I did swap the greenish yellow eraser cap and end nub from this one to the blue you see now from the 0.5mm one :cheers: and now it is much more pleasing to look at for me :D

Here is another rubber cushion mechanical pencil. This one is a Papermate Comfortmate ultra in 0.7mm. I placed it next to the Pilot G-2 mechanical pencil for comparison. If you work outside these are the go-to pencils that will work pretty good and stay in your hand.

I'm just "rediscovering" pencils. I used the Pentel P200 series, in 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9mm for many years, as I used to be a mechanical draftsman. I never used them for writing with though, as they were always loaded with film lead. I've also got several cheapo ones, the single use chuck away type (no idea why, I don't remember buying them), but never write with those either. I just got too accustomed to "draw with a pencil, write with a pen".
I've decided that I really ought to start using them more, so I've ordered myself a replacement P207, as my last one broke, but I still have a load of lead left (only the second P200 breakage in nearly 30 years. Not bad at all for such a cheap workhorse).

@ Max, great looking pencil. I enjoy writing with a pencil just as much a pen. I like to take notes in pencil actually. I also jot measurements in pencil.

I found one of the last two mechanical pencils I am looking for...this one is the Caran d’Ache Rotation in .7mm. Now I just need to find the Caran d’Ache Type 55 in 2mm. I would be a very happy camper! :tu:

Very nice...I have the 800 with the stylus! It has replaced my Perfect Pencil as it snapped in two somehow in my cargo pants :dunno:

Those 5.6 are nice too...my favorite in 5.6 is still the multi colored ones. You never know what color it is going to lay down!

Very nice, italophil :like: 0.7mm is probably my sweet spot for lead size in regular writing :tu: I use 2mm and 5.6mm for any kind of marking though :cheers:

Being German, I know the Safari line well. It probably was the most common fountain pen when I went to high school in the late '80 - early '90. I still have multiple Safari fountain pens, but only one Safari pencil.
Caran d'Ache is a great brand, I love their distinctive hexagonal silver pens.

I have been using the Pentel P205 0.5mm ever since I discovered mechanical pencils. I have them on each stationary tool, workbench, desk, and truck. Some of the leads were too soft and too weak. I settled on Pentel Super Hi-Polymer HB. Yes, cross grain in porous wood can be a challenge.
The tip of the Delguard seems a little "stubby" to me. The video makes no mention of special lead, so I guess any standard lead will work.

I have always been a Pentel fanboy, but my current goto mechanical pencil is a Staedtler 925 07, using 0.7mm HB lead. I found it comfortable and write well. I also have the more fancy ones like 925-25, which are only made for the Japanese market, though I always go back to the 925 07. On the Pentel side, I have Graphgear1000, Graph600, Graphgear500... but the one that feels right is a cheapo Pentel Sharp.

Amazon Prime did not fail, it showed up about an hour ago! I missed the start up on this one when they first came out. Looks like they have it going into full production now and is available thru Amazon Prime with 2 day delivery.
The Tutto 3 is a mechanical pencil that houses 3 different size leads, the .3mm, .5mm and .7mm. Used mainly for drawing you can cover the shade value from light to dark. Really neat. Will give a 30 day review later! Here it is ....

This Rotring Rapid Pro came in today...another 2mm but in silver color so now I can tell which one has the lighter 2H lead and the black has the darker 4B lead in it.

Kuru Togas are amazing, but strangely enough I switched from the 0.7mm to the 0.5mm. Great pencils, my favorite!

Been using my Pentel Twist Erase 0.7 almost exclusively at work for a good while now but need to get the Kura Toga out and write some with it :tu:

Well I have given the Tutto 3 a good use and getting used to it. The different sizes and therefore the different shades of hardness or softness is at your wish. I find it better for writing and not as much for the drawing end of my use. The 2mm is what I have become used to for the drawing.
The 3mm is so thin that it is constantly breaking. I figured out that you have to expose less of the graphite as it is a lighter shade. To light really.
The 5mm is much better and comes in the standard pencil graphite.
The 7mm was the best for me and with the softer graphite made drawing a lot easier.
I am just to used to my 2mm’s which I have been using for the past 45 plus years.

These two are getting the most use recently. I didn't even know I had the Zebra, I found it rooting through some stuff. :dunno:
Sadly, the olive wood had shrunk somewhat on the other one, so there's a slightly uncomfortable corner where it meets the bit that narrows down towards the lead (whatever that bit is called :think:). I might have to try and sand that down a bit somehow.
