I'm guessing the wallet is All-Ett, right? How do you carry the Surge, pocket clip or holster?

Thanks everyone, learned (stilling learning) a lot from MTO, making it possible for me to assemble this kit together.

The Surge hides inside 5th pocket of jeans to stay low profile.

Fifth pocket as in jeans fifth pocket (coin/watch/lighter/ ...  pocket ) I can barely fit a Juice in there let alone a Surge. :o

Why not? The pocket is about 5 inches deep, 3.25 inches wide.
6" Ruler is shown for size demolition.
Excuse the old belt, I wore it over 6500 days.

Somebody said "alien" I thought they said "illegal alien" and signed up!

Hard to say if Leatherman will still be around after 200+ years.
Maybe they would offer 250 years "no questions asked" warranty on their tools.

Everything in photo was purchased after I joined MTO, about three weeks ago. Except the belt of course.

Yes please.  I always like a good how to, especially when it involves duct tape.  I carry my extra saw blades in the sleeve the originals came in but it wont last.

Feb update: Keeping it simple.
Switch main EDC MT to Rebar, Surge now rides in car.

New Surge = Versatile & super heavy duty, offers everything a MT could.
Rebar = A sweet balance of tool selection, simplicity and ease of carrying.

March update.
1. EDC the Surge again. The damn thing is so cool, plus I fixed the pocket clip issue.
2. I was not happy with the way I used to carry the saw blades, it was pretty difficult to access. So I attached the pouch came with Rebar on to the M4 Magazine / iPhone pouch.
3. Remade the sleeve for the saw blades. The selection of blades also changed, now I carry Bosch wood & metal saw blades, two of each. The one came with Surge sits somewhere else. (Longer saw = better)
4. Adding Croc back to the loadout, even though it may not be use much, but there will be time and place that I need a pry-bar or wrench. Indeed it is a handy little tool.
5. Added Fenix LD01 to the side of Magazine / iPhone pouch.

Nice Carry Lam

One suggestion

I'd like to see you put a small fixed blade or mid to large size folder into your edc

I know you don't need one because the surge has nice oh opening blades.
Its nice to have something to cut the things you WANT and keep the surge ready for the things you HAVE to cut.

I enjoy my knives. I don't need to carry one because I also always have a multitool tool on me.

I carry a endura most often. I keep it clean and razor sharp.  Its almost insane what a razor sharp endura will cut through.
its fun cutting when you know its your edge melting through whatever its cutting through.
I take pride in my knives and what they can do.

I think you may enjoy one also.

I know this is a very unusual approach, I just added a snap off utility knife to my setup.
It is OHO, light as air and stays razor sharp, good for general cutting tasks and fits on side of pouch very well.
I am going give it a few days to see how I like it.

I carry a razor blade in my Wave nylon sheath and on my sheath I carry my Surge in.  A razor for me is a known tool and can be very discrete when needed to be.  I tend to carry them actually quite a lot and used to carry a box cutter but have delegated it to my Micro pouch.

I've been thinking about switching to a new surge for edc, but I'm thinking I might get more uses if I have a modded sidekick (replaceable bit driver, scissors, tweezers, and t-shank adapter) and a modded crunch (replaceable bit driver, awl and dental hook).  What do you guys think?
Title: Re: Kampfer's EDC Gadgets

In a long run, go with the New Surge as long as you found a way to carry the 12oz comfortably, it has everything you could ask for on a MultiTool.

All its wearable tools are replaceable, saw, file, wire cutter etc.

Here is the snap off knife I added, it was 5.25" long so I sawed it down to 4.25".
It weights less than the Swiss+Tech Utili-Key.

I'm not entirely sure if it'll be ideal for the flat bits, it might be too deep for them. For hx bits, there's a notch to keep them from sinking into the driver, bit I don't know if that works for the flat ones.

He use a small bolt and nut. He put an 8 ring in between the keys so you can hang them on a carabiner or what have you. He email me a while back, showing me how he made it. Pretty good idea I think. Keeps the keys from making noise and the are more compact.

I researched on numerous of key organizers available in market, they are expensive and have their limitations.
None can satisfy my needs, because I have a car key and a detachable Utility key i like to incorporate into the setup.

So I decided to make my own, the objectives are ALLCQS (Adaptable, Low-cost, Lightweight, Compact, Quiet & Simple).
I went down to hardware store to pick up a set of stainless steel #8-32 screw and nut, two washers and a sister clip, bolt the keys together, a few drops of super glue on the screw thread at the end. The nut is not going undone itself unless I use pliers.

I am very happy with the end result and I hope you guys will too.

yeah that is how I made it. The car keys first.

I'm always adding or removing keys with my current job so I haven't tried to do anything with my keys in a few years

I should try again. Thin time on a set I use just for home.

So I pull an old trick of mine, ask the salesman: What do you EDC?

He pulled out a 530 from his pocket.... I am a bayonet guy, so as soon as I saw that spear point shape, that is it for me. I just love the look of it.

Got myself a Maxpedition, nice product!  :tu: Well made and looks cool.
TC-1 is the smallest in the series they offer, comparing to TC-2 & TC-3, I wish I ordered a TC-2 instead, because the TC-1 barely fits the stuff I  want to carry. There is absolutely no room for anything else. I could not even swap Croc to Pirahna, too tight.

The side webbing are non-stretchable, which is the biggest complain I have.
I wish they were made of stretchable elastic material.
With the internal pocket is completely filled, I could not slide anything under them. I must add another elastic string to it in order to carry my LD01.

Some details about my Surge kit that I EDC in computer bag.
I use ST300 sheath to store the bit kits and Piranha, and all saw blades go into the tube came with PWII.
The main reason I don't EDC Surge anymore is that one needs to carry all the accessories to take FULL advantage of the mighty Surge.

The Surge itself I am fine with it, just all the accessories are pain to EDC on person.

Kampfer,

Is the Maxpedition TC-1 pouch still working OK for you?   I'm thinking of buying one.

It looks like you removed the Maxpedition label.  Did you subdue the formerly white stitching?  The stitching looks darker in the last photo.

I used a black marker to "paint" the white stitching of some of my black Maxpedition pouches.

Did you cut off the end of the cinch strap?   Remove the D-ring?

I imagine that buckling and unbuckling the stock cinch strap would slow access to the pouch contents.

Thanks!

You are correct on all accounts, sir.
The TC1 was a bit tight for me as I was using otter box on iPhone 5
After I watch the CNN report on iPhone cover, I switched to normal slim iPhone cover.
Now there is plenty of room in TC1 for the phone and a full size MT and a few small items.

I like to know all of your honest opinion on this:
As a desk jockey, I really don't need all these gadgets (in fact I was doing fine with just a Utility-Key in the past 10 years), but I am trying to develop the habit of having these gadgets on me 24/7 to be prepare for whatever life throw at me unexpectedly, regardless when or where.

I know some of you use a different EDC system, a specify kit for a specify situation or purpose, like urban kit, outdoor kit, tactical kit, disaster kit, etc...

I wonder if I am pursuing in the right direction. Thanks.

I have a just in case kit in my car, not a BOB, just a bag with some stuff I might need.

As for kits, nope. :D I have a base EDC that sometimes gets upgraded if I know I'll need something that day. The keychain, pocket flashlight, multi, ... stay the same for months, I rotate the SAKs every few days and that's about it. But that depends from person to person.

You have a reasonable set of gear.  Given what you describe, I wouldn't carry any more on your person except for a couple of bandages (e.g., simple Band-Aids) and a limited amount of over the counter medication, e.g., a couple of ibuprofen pills.

Your on-person kit covers the same capabilities as mine.  I've carried more items, but found that I rarely needed them.

What you carry in your car/truck is a different matter -- more meds, jumper cables, tools, etc.

BTW, I received the Maxpedition TC-1 pouch.  The cinch strap got in the way so I cut it off.

Kam I think we all go thru that same feeling.  You carry is great IMO provided you have a small FAK as well.  I posted regarding a similar feeling I was having

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,48885.msg812148.html#msg812148

I still feel the same way and since really giving it thought I'm comfortable with what I carry day to day when I'm off.  I may rotate out one MT for another or one knife for another but the BASE is the same.   I may also add in something just for fun or testing but the BASE remains.

I posted somewhere that I have an Evacuation bag in my room at the ready.  We live in California so the threat is real that we may have to leave our homes.  I also have a simple car bag with change of clothes, back up flashlight, larger FAK, and stuff to get me back on the road or keep me safe while I wait for triple A or help should I become disabled.

As I say in my post I linked, I'm not trying to prepare for everything.  Your EDC gear is "living" and becoming fine tuned as you carry it everyday.  You will intuitively feel the need to add or subtract as needs arise or concerns never materialize.  I say have fun with it and as I've always said EDC means carry something everyday at the very least.

Trying something different.

I had a Skeletool X (Standard Skeletool with 154CM blade) for months, never pay much attention it because I was pursuing the
Mini-Surge. I thought more tools = better.
Now with all the recent activates here on MTO regarding the Skeletool, made me bring mine back out to give it a try.

WOW, I fell in love with it and rethink the whole concept, it might just about right for me as urban EDC.
Skeletool have just the basic tools and nothing more.

Also I have the habit of babying my stuff, so I never wanted to hard use my Mini-Surge and Benchamdes as they are hard to replace / expensive. Skeletool on the other hand fills both their roles and it is easy to replace and inexpensive.

It has its shortcomings, so it will be accompany with Mica to gain mini screw driver and scissors.

If I even need more tools, another MT with fully loaded features is never far away. (I hope)

Is it one of those beads for lanyards? Cut and filed down so as just to use the front part?...

It was actually a pin, removed the pins on back filed down flat.

After trying out numerous different EDC set up. this is my absolute favorite.
It covers all the bases, very capable, and comfortable to carry.
Mini-Surge clips to pocket, its OHO blades reserve for emergency only (self defense or rescue)
Mercator is light and slim, carrys comfortably in cell phone pouch for utility or food prep

Kam - I'm guessing you like that LD02 as its the only thing that stays consitant across your carries. I'm in the market for a AAA clicky and have been looking past the LD02 because at 3 inches it seems like it might be too small for both the clicky and the head to extend past my hand when I'm holding it. I've got average sized hands. Do you find this to be the case and,if so, is it annoying to get to the clicky? Comparing lights and trying to understand how much of a knock this is. Thanks!  :salute:

That is because I am not a flashlight guy, don't know much about them. LD02 is a big improvement over LD01 because I don't like twist on lights. So far I am very happy with LD02, small and lght, pretty bright and last long enough for my use.

The clip has problems, a little too easy to pop off, I use a small o-ring to address this issue.

I carry it on the external molle strap of my pouch, so I can turn it on in less than 1 second.

Did I answer your question?

Thanks. What I really want to know is whether the size is adequate when it's in use. When you are holding it in a fist so that flashlight head is by the pinky and clicky by the thumb, is it easy to use the clicky or does it get buried under your ring finger because the light is so small?

It is not an issue for me but I have small hands.
It is small and light, for quick work I can hold it in mouth.

Another vote for the usability of the LD02. I agree with Kampfer that the clip is problematic, but since I carry it in a sheath side pocket or loose in a pants pocket, it's a non-issue for me. I wear a size large glove and find the light to be quite usable and definitely not too small. It is a very good light for it's size and cost.

A big test for Paratool yesterday.
My parents were locked out after their morning walk. Luckly i was near by, rushed to help after i got the call. After careful considerations seen like taking down the front metal door was the best way to go. The door frame was held in place by large wood screws and large hex bolts, so i pulled my Paratool to work on them. The #1 phillips driver was no match for those #3 wood screws, the driver kept slipping out and kept folding down when i apply pressure, also every time i twist the tool, the handles silde out from its locking tabs and openning itself.  :-\ then same thing happened when working on the hex bolts, while angeled pilers head would be very helpful, but again the handles kept folding out under pressure. That clearly shown Paratool had reached its limits.

Guess what saved the day? In less than 5 mins my Surge took down the entire door frame without any trouble. That is exactly why I EDC the Surge kit in my computer bag. After the metal door was taken down, my parents open the wooden door behind it with PIN code.  :)

Surprisingly the P³ was able complete the task, one thing I did differently was instead of using Phillis driver to deal with#3 screws I used the medium flathead/bottle opener. Hex bolts were dealt with by the pilers as well.

It is new, I just got it yesterday, so don't know yet, it is standard cold steel AUS8, should be ok.
The Titan....It is bright, and heavy, and I hate twist on/off. I am happier with my Fenix LD02.

Post by: Kampfer on April 29, 2016, 10:51:30 PM
I have the Titan Plus, 300 lumens, comparing to my Fenix LD02, 100 lumens, to the naked eyes the Titan is 1.5 times brighter, and it is 4 times heavier, thanks to its brass construction.

I hate the twist on/off/change mode operation, much prefer tail button.

Pretty wicked set up Kam  :tu:.  I'm really digging your Kuk rig.
Thanks, the first thing I worked on after receiving the blade was the rig, just too tactical for me.
It came with a belt attachment loop, from my reenacted battle experience, hanging something this size / weight on belt and leg is very cumbersome, it will swing around and keep banging on the leg, and blade can not be draw in prone or crouch position, nor while running.

So I took inspiration from the Chinese DaDao carrying rig and create this setup. Battle tested, much easier and more comfortable to carry during battle as a secondary weapon.

The KuKri has unusual blade shape, almost like a reversed Scimitar, I positioned the sheath "upside down" for a smooth draw.

It was typical,  "H :o LY   SM :o KE!" I am used to that already. :D

While Espada is the champ for slashing watermelons, it is kinda cumbersome when comes to small daily cutting tasks, sometime inappropriate. I am glad to add Patriot to my carry, awesome little utility blades, the larger spear point for food prep and smaller clip point blade for opening boxes, sharpening pencils, etc.

That Espada is just beautiful... Although it does look a bit intimidating, still, it keeps the elegance.
Exactly, that is my most carried knife.  :tu:

From sandblasted to satin?
Pretty simple, start slowly gently with 400 grit, after the surface is smoothed out, switch to 200 grit to shine it up.
Of course the hard the steel is the longer will take, and the more time you put in it the better result will be.

My daily companions: Min-Surge & Mini-Onslaught.
Where did you get that file from?  Locks into Wave or Surge in place of pocket clip?

Been reading thru this entire thread, very cool!

AWESOME! What's the story on the file?

The file was taken off from Wave during creation of Mini-Surge, I do like to have diamond file for sharpen knives in a pinch, ....

I removed the lanyard ring long ago, there is just a empty slot there.... ???

Got it! :2tu:

To sum up: Many hours of brainstorming, creating concept art, measuring and dremel works.  >:D

Light duty only, as so much metal is removed the file isn't very strong. Do not use as metal saw.

Neck knife for my boy, he really likes the Tomo I gave him last year, but again the keyring attachment really gets in the eway when the knife is being use. So I attached it to the Mini LED Flashlight back to back, use the keyring attachment on the light instead to solve the issue.

We been burglarized last month. The thief took our family car from our garage.

He was caught 72 hours later after he crashed our car and got hurt. My tools in the car were recovered from his backpack. Just got them back from the police.

I am guessing he liked my tools so much, instead of selling them he kept them to use on "jobs".

The investigation is ongoing, here is the Police Blotter:
http://patch.com/california/losgatos/arrests-drugs-car-theft-weekly-los-gatos-monte-sereno-police-blotter

2/11/2017 0513 hours
300-blk College
Arrest: 19 year old male, resident of San Jose
Charges: Stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, hit and run, trespassing, attempted burglary
Officers were responding to a report of a suspicious subject when they received additional information that the party had attempted to flee, but had crashed his vehicle. Upon their arrival, officers determined that the involved vehicle had been reported stolen from Campbell. Multiple items of stolen property were located inside of the vehicle. Officers searched for the involved party and located him inside of a portable toilet. Initially, the subject did not comply, but he was eventually arrested and transported to Main Jail.

2/12/2017 2030 hours
90-blk Church
Officers responded to a report that several storage lockers had been burglarized. The suspect was identified as the same subject arrested on College Avenue.

Switching my main EDC from Espada to this Pocket Bowie with 5.5 inch of mirror polished blade..
It is lighter, thinner to carry in pocket, and its conventional blade shape is better for all kinds task including utility & defense. No wonder the Recon 1 series is Cold Steel's best seller.

I agree on the twist on/off interface in general

General... Who?! Who do I salute?!

I couldn't wait more to have a "claw knife" from Cold Steel and it was either the Black Talon or Tiger Claw folders, but both are waaay out of my budget now, so I admit I failed   and bought a clone of the CS Tiger Claw.
I hope it gets here this week, and I'll try and see if the design ticks it for me. If it does, I bet I'm getting a real Cold Steel T.Claw soon.

It is v grinded, while the knife is solid and well built, the back back spring became very weak after just a few days of opening/closing. I contacted SOG about this.

the Wave on this perticular model has shown to be problematic,
and was discussed on BF and other forums

I've seen quite a few people modify theirs, to good result and better deployment in some cases after nasty accidents like yours.

Once I disabled the wave feature, Tiger Claw became a much better knife, for me at least.
It has 0.5” shorter reach comparing to BT2, but the ring helps to retain the knife during aggressive slashes.

The simpler blade shape is more useful for everyday utility tasks and much easier to sharpen compare to the Talon blade.

I am not saying it is better than Black Talon but I will give the Tiger Claw a thumb up.

That is correct. Also the gap between spine and plate is just too small for a reliable catch.

Every thing, open boxes envelopes packages, cut rope cord, peel apple, etc.
It does everything a normal blade could but better, except using it on a cutting board.

You beat me to it K

I´ve found larger hawkbills not entirely suited for box opening. It´s very easy to damage the contents of the box in the same cut.
But they´re very good at cardboard cutting.

I´ve used smaller ones fur pruning twigs and cutting flowers. Small hawkbills are a standard florist´s tool.

A hawkbill blade (serrated or not) cuts easier through rope than a straight blade.

Agree, because it cuts so damn well. So make sure the blade is not pointing at but away from the contents.

No problems yet, and the steel (whatever pot steel the Chinese used) was really soft and easy to grind compared to the CTS-XHP from the real one

Actually not jingle much due to their weight.

After having some late night snack with wifey in Cupertino Village (a Chinese shopping center, across from Apple "Spaceship" HQ), we spotted three scumbags trying to break into a parked car. I went up to confront them. One of them told me to smurf off while another one threaten me with a small prybar; so I showed them my Espada. They jumped into a car and took off in hurry.

Good point, I was being really careful about that. I kept my distance, at least four meters from them. so them don’t feel too threaten, and kept their escape path wide open; that also give me some time and space to react in case there is further action. I guess at that moment I was willing to take reasonable amount of risk to stand up to those scums, know calling police would never get them caught.

I've been very curious about this one, how do you like the plastic clip? The secondary lock rattles on yours too if you don't activate it manually?  :ahhh
How is the action, Ti-Lite-ish, smooth, lacking, need a wrist flick?

Thanks for your answers and looking forward to your thoughts on it  :salute:  especially compared to the Hold Out and Ti-Lite, arguably the closest in specs and function

Many changes in my EDC system.
Maxpedition pouch is replaced by simple M4 mag pouch to carry cell phone.
LD02 is tugged in behind the pouch for fast access.
MT wise I am downgraded to Squirt PS4A, but there is always a Surge or Spirit nearby.
EAB is now my EDC blade, I just found razor blade is much more practical for modern city life, most the stuff I found myself need to cut are cardboard, metal wires, hard plastic etc, which I don't want to cut with my nice blades.

As always, a Cold Steel mega folder would be my sidearm.

Another thing, modern car keys are just way too bulky and heavy (smae size & weight as a Juice) for me to carry, now I have to carry it in a small Leather belt pouch
