Title: Sideclip Sensation
Post by: pietervn on August 07, 2016, 06:22:56 AM
G'Day,

The Sideclip, a Leatherman with class and finesse. It is light enough to disappear in ones pocket, yet strong and capable to tackle many many tasks. I have been a fan for a long time and usually carry a Sideclip at home. It was my first full size LM, so it holds a VERY special place in my heart. The weight and size is perfect for shorts or jeans and the clip a very comfortable attachment. A while ago I bought a used Sideclip with a Timberland and logo on the side. There was also the left overs of another logo but it was sanded or polished off. I used it for a while as a beater tool around the house, but every time I saw the handles my OCD kicked in. The removal of the first logo showed me that I can get the other one off, but then I will sit with a semi-polished Sideclip. That would look very odd.

First I took the tool apart, and carefully took note of all the washers and the positions of the inside tools. Then all the old gunk was removed including some locktight that prevented the big flat head screwdriver from opening smoothly. I then grabbed the MetalGlow metal polish and some micro fibre cloths and got to work. The removal of the logo took the longest, about 8 hours. (All done by hand) The other three sides took another six hours. I only polished the outside though. Then came the blade and the inner tools. Lastly the plier head. I was not sure if it will polish up and there was NO way that I can have a shiny tool with a matt plier head. Surprisingly the pliers took only 20 minutes to polish. It is not nearly as shiny as the sides, I still wanted to retain some of the patina.

There is one down side to such a polished tool though, it shows fingerprints very clearly and very easily. When I took the pictures I had a clean micro fibre cloth and wiped it off after every time I touched it.

I have never seen an original polished version of the tool in person, or have been able to get one shipped to Oz, but I think that mine has come up tops. It will be stored away and only used on special occasions.

Enjoy the pics,

Pete

Great job and a real labour of love.

I am sure it looks even more amazing in the flesh metal - Maybe I'll get to see it one day !!
I promise to wear white gloves.
