Title: Some Hen and Roosters
Post by: Poncho65 on September 20, 2016, 04:11:36 AM: Well I finally took the time and got most of my Hen and Rooster knives out and took some pics :cheers: This pic I know doesn't include the H&R fixed blades I have nor the one I have EDC'd and who knows I may have missed a couple :shrug:

I didn't realize how much of an undertaking this was going to be :facepalm: Took me a long time to get them back into the right boxes after the pics :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :D

This is the first time I have ever really had this collection out for pics and I enjoyed looking at them all together like that :tu:

I was just gonna do a few at a time but I knew that I might not ever get them out if it was just a few at a time :whistle:

They are all bought in the last few years all the way back to no older than 20 years ago :tu: I wished I had some of the older ones as well but they fetch a rather hefty price most of the time on ebay when they do come up ::) :D

H&R in general usually have very good stag handles and my dad has a way better collection of those and MOP handles ones than I do :dd:

Thanks JD :tu: Some of my favorite knives in these pics :dd: The smaller sowbelly with the regular SS blades is the smoothest opening and closing knife I have ever had in my hands :cheers:

I only grew up with it because my dad collects them ;) They have been in business since 1845 I think :think: The date may even be on one of the blades :D

I quite love them and the green handled one I have is a whittler and they are very fine quality knives IMO and are worth what they cost :tu:

I do always buy in person (well the stag anyways) I use to carry a 4 bladed congress with the bigger bolsters in carbon steel and stag handles just like the one in the pics but it isn't as new looking ;) I don't think I have any that have blade rub but have heard that can be a problem with some of them sometimes :tu: I have also carried a few of these in the pics but it has been several years now since any of them have seen the inside of a pocket :D

Also I forgot to mention that the Damascus steel ones are made in Spain from German steel :cheers:

That is why I carry SAKs as well myself ;) I do love these traditionals as well but I would rather have the tools on my SAKs :cheers: It is still a joy to go and look at these beautiful knives and buy one for my birthday some years or as a Christmas present :dd:

It all depends on how much you use the blades on your knives and what you use them for. If you have a lot of cutting duties, you're still better off with 1095 or D2 steel. You can always back it up with a plier multi (or a SAK for that matter) and have the same functions. If you're saying that a SAK is better suited for urban living, I agree with you. Some of us don't live in urban areas.

I personally don't look at it as traditional vs. SAK, necessarily. I would be much more apt to ask why someone needs a tactical folder more in "today's world" than they need a traditional folder. I would bet that the vast majority of duties the tactical folders are used for would be better suited to a traditional folder, if not more so.

Post by: kkokkolis on September 20, 2016, 11:02:02 PM: Yes, urban living. While on vacation I also like a folder with whittling qualities. I use a Pioneer with pruner or a Ranger Hunter but a couple of small blades would help (sadly, I would need a punch/awl too, for makkng holes).
The first soldier's SAK looked a lot like these traditionals, it looks like a Barlow when closed. SAKs evolved since then but the fixation to celidor, iconic SAK shaoe and drop point blades make it look a bit boring compared to traditional blade shapes and handle material. Wenger made some Clip points and both brands maked other types if handles but they are mostly for collectors and nit that common.
I will sharpen my Wenger Stock knife (with Stockman configuration) and see what it does with wood.

There was very little interest of traditional knives or at least my H&R knives way back whenI first joined here as well ;) when I tried to have a thread about them there wasn't much interest either so I gave up and just started talking SAKs :whistle: There is some of the same members here now but a lot of the newer crowd seems to be more in tune with them though (newer meaning members from the last 6 or so years :D )

Yes especially since they are either made in Germany or Spain :facepalm: :think: Only the Damascus and fixed blade Hen and Roosters are made in Spain but all the carbon and stainless steel ones are German made :tu:

Oh I didn't know they've outsourced in China. I'm just hoping they are still quality knives. :-[ I have bought the knife and just waiting for it to be delivered. I guess I'll just see.

Oh I didn't know they've outsourced in China. I'm just hoping they are still quality knives. :-[ I have bought the knife and just waiting for it to be delivered. I guess I'll just see.

I am not sure about the outsourced part and as I said they still make them in Germany and Spain :salute: I had heard that but not for sure about it :tu: I have never had a bad one and they have all had great fit and finish :like: I am sure you will get a good one :like:

Was at SMKW about 20 years ago. Very impressive! Also used to hit big gun & knife shows in the mid-Atlantic regions. Out here in Colorado there are no knife shops, and only one decent dealer at the big local show in Denver. Knife collecting is not a big hobby out west.

Yes, Poncho does have an eye for AWL things sharp. Was amazed he said his father has more than he, and the that he gathered those shared here in a short period prior to posting.

If I had not stumbled upon this thread, and observed your humble assortment of most excellent H&R samples, I may have embarked on a journey to corner the market. But, since you already have, I have saved a fortune of $s and ⏳ to chase other more sensible items. 😁
