The French Baladeo call their knife a couteau terroir, but I doubt that terroir is a legit French word.
A loose translation would be down to earth knife.

I really like this knife....more than I expected to.
It is wonderfully simple and straightforward. It reminds me of Opinels and Douk-douks. It conjures up impressions of ancient folders from the 1700's, when such a knife might have been used as a 'patch knife' or to prep dinner at a camp fire.
It sure puts a smile on my face. :D

I got a Sod Buster from a member and was surprised how much I actually liked it. Such a simple honest blade. I recently picked up a larger one I think from the 80s. It equally a wonderfully honest knife. The full flat grind makes for one helluva sharp knife. Its has wear but its all cosmetic which for me add a lot of character.

Neither of mine do. It would be a nice touch actually. Not essential but nice.
-
Giving this thread a bump because there's so many beautiful knives of this pattern out there!
-
I'm still pretty happy with my large and small Case Sod Busters. The smaller one get used for any and everything, mostly dirty work. My large Sod Buster is used for more "clean" stuff. I do use it on foods so I try to steer clear of some things.
-
They really are great knives Aloha! I only have the small one, but wouldn't mind expanding the collection a bit. It's about the only Case I can afford to go crazy with at the moment.
-
Interestingly enough I feel content with my case Jr and my Bullnose. I feel like getting one with stag would be against the "work knife" ideal. It would be too pretty to get dirty. I wouldn't mind a Bullnose in Micarta though.

Nice ones guys! I'll have to break mine out
-
I agree Anka. I like mine as basic as I can get.
-
Boy but those stag covers sure are :dd:. I would not hesitate for the right price. My Jr is yellow synthetic covers (delrin?) which I dont think twice about working hard. I also really like that color. My large is black which works in that color.
I've only just realized that the nail nick is on one side . I pinch to open not using the nail nick.
-
Ours are the same Aloha. I really like the yellow scales too. All my Case knives have them!
-
What keeps me from, wait....... what slows me. Thats better. What slows me from getting a more expensive traditional is this darn knife. It does everything I need and want. Its a little rough around the edges but nothing that prevents it from what it is.
I think some of us gradually evolve to want "nicer" versions of things we already have :dunno:. I can be that way too. I think to myself, if this lessor priced tool is this good I can only imagine what paying double/triple the price would get me. Then I read all the pros and cons of the higher priced item and I get sucked in. Thankfully my frugal life always puts me in check.
In the CASE ( pun intended ) with the Sod Buster Jr for my purposes its simplicity and simple components are what make this little gem so lovely. Ok the CASE can be made that my SAK can do the same. Heres my rationale, sometimes I enjoy an apple while other times a plum. Neither is so good that I'll not have one over the other.

I like the Long version (IMP22L) of that schrade a LOT more than the mini version. It's right up there with Case. It has a very strong backspring so it doesn't fold up as easily as my Case, and the delrin handles look better than the Case ones somehow. Maybe it's the logo, maybe it's the matte look, but I like it. BUT... I still do prefer my CV-bladed red-handled Case more. But that was $40. The Schrade is under $10.... I bought a couple for motorcycle tool rolls and emergency kits, and then a few more to give as christmas gifts. :)

Yeah. My mailman gets a knife every year, and knives are actually pretty popular in white elephant exchanges as well. My brother got a swiss army knife last year and will probably get a sodbuster this year. I give knives as tips sometimes. I had an apprentice come in and do a bit of tile in my bathroom. He worked his ass off and did a good job, and I paid him what we agreed on and then gave him a sodbuster for all the extra effort he put in. Giving some cheap, quality knives away also makes you popular at the motorcycle dealership parts counter... I've gotten discounts and just had better interactions afterwards. "I'm looking for this random jet"... and the guy goes in teh back, rummages around in the ancient pile of crap, and brings me boxes full of NOS jets that look like they haven't been touched in years. Then goes back to rummage around for some more. THEN sells them to me at a discount, so I end up paying less than $3 each.
Charles.

Uh.... Hi.
Is this thing on?
I spend almost all my time over in the Swiss Army Knights forum but thought I would poke my head in here. I could use a little advice. As it turns out, I own a Case Sod Buster Jr.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
This knife has some age on it. I got it from my dad when I was a high school kid in the mid 90s. When he gave it to me, it was already old, very used, barely opened or closed, and was really discolored.
It was the first knife I ever "worked" on. I cleaned it, oiled it, and tried to knock at least the top layer of rust/whatever off the blade. I had no idea what kind of knife it was or anything about it. I grew up in a SAK household. My dad carried one (still does) and so did I (still do). I found this knife in the bottom of an old tool box that my dad didn't use any more that was full of old, worn out tools that my dad didn't use any more either.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
I lost it for many years - thought it was long gone. But it turns out I have had it for over 25 years now. It even managed to make the move across the country my family and I did in 2021. It was in the bottom of a tool box (like father, like son I guess) and I came across it the other day.
It was stiff again. But I applied a generous helping of the Japanese food safe mineral oil that I use on my SAKs and that got it moving again pretty well. But it could still use a good sharpen. The problem is that this knife is NOT stainless steel, which is what I'm used to being a SAK guy.
I don't know what kind of steel this is or how to sharpen it.
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]
Does anyone know what kind of steel this is likely to be and how I should sharpen it? The knife is at least from the 80s and is possibly older than that. I asked my dad but he doesn't remember when he got it exactly. But he's sure it would have been no later than the 1980s. I've seen some newer Sod Busters that have an "SS" on the tang stamp that indicate that they are stainless steel. Mine does not have that. There's nothing other than a number on the back side (2137).
All my limited sharpening equipment is geared toward stainless steel (i.e. - mostly ceramic!). But I do have a small "Arkansas stone" in a leather BSA slip case that I got when I was in the Scouts and have kept up with all these years.
The knife isn't without an edge. I'm actually surprised just how sharp it actually is. But the edge is inconsistent along the length of the blade and I would like to get it back in good working order.
I really like this knife and it made me very happy to find it again after all these years. It would be nice to give it a new life and carry and use it from time to time.
-
There are 10 dots between Case XX and USA, and the S's are not rounded. According to what I see at the Shepherd Hills website (https://www.casexx.com/Library/Secret.asp), that dates the knife to 1980. And the lack of an SS stamp seems to mean it is carbon steel.
I am such a new knife collector that I can't confidently say what carbon steel formulation Case used in 1980.
-
It should sharpen up just like your SAKs, as the Steel used by CASE could be easily sharpened by a stone off the ground.
Glad you found it, as it is a classic work knife from when you could carry a knife in your pocket and use without to many stares.
Here is some details about the tang stamps on your blade.

If all 10 dots present it is1980, one is removed for each year. If 8 dots then 1982. Etc.

Your knife blade will be Chrome Vanadium. IIRC Case only used two steels, Tru Sharp SS and CV.
-
Thanks guys!
I’ve learned a lot in just a few replies. So if the blade is chrome vanadium I can sharpen it with the ceramic rods I use on my stainless steel SAK blades?
Also, this knife is apparently two years older than I am!
-
You can use most methods to get that blade in top shape. I've used my Spydero Shaprmaker and Lansky Turn box ceramics with very good results. From what you say the blade might just need a little work rather than a whole regrind.
Enjoy, they are made to work thats for sure.
-
I can also see myself adding a new one to the knife drawer… or two more… there are different colors!
-
Yep, multiple color options!
Besides black, there are Yellow, Blue, Red, Orange, and many different Jigged Bone colors from CASE.
Yours is a Jr (37) pattern. There is also a larger model, a 38 pattern.
Then there are other manufacturers that make is pattern, the results can be a budget buster.
Welcome🤪
-
Nice one, Marlowe221! You should really enjoy carrying it.

As I can attest to  :D

Yes! I’ve seen that there are other knife makers that make this pattern. Most of them seem to be pretty inexpensive…
That means I can have a lot of them, right? Isn’t that how that works? :D
-
Yes! :tu:

Yes! It is the :MTO: way.
Should never limit yourself to just ONE!

:iagree: yessir! One is never enough I should know

Just thought I'd post a quick update. After a few passes on some ceramic thingamabob I have in a drawer, I've got my 40+ year old Sodbuster Jr back to paper-slicing sharpness!
I won't claim it's as sharp as this blade is capable of being, but it's good enough for the kinds of things I'll tend to use it for.

I like that one steve!

Nice picture ^!
Did you pull off the side of the road to get your Soddy to pose?
-
Great news Marlowe. The Sod Buster is a really good knife. Once dull you can get the blade back to working sharp fairly easy.

Well….
I ordered an Imperial not-Sodbuster Jr. (I forget what Imperial calls it) on Amazon today. It was under $10! It’s the one with the black handle. I have to admit that the “dried booger yellow” you see on some traditional knife handles is not a very appealing color to me.
I’ll be interested to compare it to my old Case.
-
I think you will find the Imperial to be a good knife for its price.

Not sure why this particular color was so popular? I actually like it but I also have the black one as well. Great knife thats for sure. Simple like an Opinel yet tough as nails.

I have it now and you're absolutely right - this is an excellent knife for under $10. And seems like it's a pretty good knife regardless of price!
My initial impressions are that it compares very well to my 40 year old Case. That is to say, the Imperial looks and feels like it's, more or less, of a similar quality to the Case. The Imperial's handles are slightly thinner than the Case. I wonder if that's still the same if compared to a brand new Case Sodbuster Jr?
Edit - Let me also say that I love how you can open these knives without using the nail nick at all. I wish I could do that with my Recruit or Huntsman!
-
It is my impression that the Case Sod Busters in the smooth synthetic scales are identical across the decades. The newer versions in bone and other materials may vary ever so slightly😉 And cost more too!
-
I mean, I might just have to buy myself a new Sodbuster Jr. to put that hypothesis to the test... :dunno:
For scientific research purposes, of course. :salute:
-
Also, blade steel has evolved.
Earlier Soddies had Carbon Steel Blades. Now they offer Surgical Steel SS and Chrome Vanadium Steel CV.
You may need to properly evaluate, purchase 4 sod buster jr models. Or 6 for better cross section of samples.
That the MTo way🤪

I have told myself not to go chasing every Case Soddie Jr. That would be the end result :o
Having said that, he does have some a lot of knives that I would love to have

One of the hardest things about such a large collection is selling. I'm not just talking finding the right person to buy but choosing to let them go.
I understand trying to sell 139 individual items would be a PITA. There are some nice pieces in that collection for sure.
That all aside, what a wonderful collection.
-
So.... what's the non-Case name for this pattern?
I've been trying to find examples of it from other makers but if I don't see an example of it in this thread, I have no idea what to even search for. :dunno:
What terms do I give Google to find me knives in this pattern that aren't a Case Sodbuster?
-
Sodbuster
Work knife
Boker Rangebuster
Dirt Buster Jr
Roper Tumbleweed Jr
Bear & Son Farmhand
GEC Bull Nose
GEC Bull Buster
GEC Sudbuster
Maserin Scout
Maserin Plow
Smith and Sons Mudbug
Queen Country Cousin
I may have forgotten a few.
If you prefer the smaller sodbusters, make sure you check the measurements. S9me of the knives, such as the RR denim work knife, can be quite beefy. On the other hand, Hen & Rooster's Dirt Buster Jr is pretty small.
Happy hunting!
-
Thanks! I mean, that's too many names but thanks!
I do like the Sodbuster Jr size though.

Here is my new to me Imperial Sodbuster. It was one of the items I kept out of the Surprise Package started by Sos24, which is still available to ship to whoever wants it next. For those not familiar, the surprise box is a medium priority shipping box ($17.00 to ship) filled to the scuppers with goodies and all you have to do is give your address to the last person who received it and they will send it to you. After you pick out what you want to keep, and (optionally) add some items you want to give away, you forward it to the next person who says they want it. It's free tools and knives, but you won't know what's in the box until you get it. That's the surprise. Really. Who doesn't like free? Here's the thread in the Break Room. https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,90040.0.html

:iagree:, the handle shape on the Imperial appears very comfortable! :like:
-
It is comfortable. All of the edges of the handle are smooth so it won't tear up my hand or my pocket. I think at least six members got the surprise box before I got it. I'm very grateful to whoever left the Imperial Sodbuster in the box before I got it. All of the participating members have been very generous.
-
I am glad you like it, Alan. I liked it a lot, so much so that I bought a replacement after putting that one in the GAW box, and I thought that someone receiving the GAW might like it as well.

I've got one of those Imperial not-Sodbuster Jrs too. It's great and I only paid $10 for it.
I've also got a 43 year old Case Sodbuster Jr - the main difference between the two (besides the steel itself) is the handles. The Case's handles are just a little bit thicker than the Imperial. It's very subtle though. I could feel a difference between the two when holding them but it took me a little while to figure out what the difference actually was!
The Imperial seems like a pretty great pocket knife for not much $$$.
