This one needs a bit of a history lesson- but then, what good is a collection piece without a story behind it?
Years ago on another website I became what was then known as The Grand Toolmaster of an organization called the Secret Order of Swiss Army Knives, or SOSAK for short. It was in that group that I met a man named Travis Autry who sold promotional goods in his spare time. He came to me with an idea that he had about making a special model Swiss Army Knife for the group. Nothing special, just the name of the group printed on the scales. We made that knife, and it was such a success that we did it again the next year, and the year after. From the second year (2004) on we also added the year to the scale as well as the Secret Order of Swiss Army Knives.
This was a tradition that we kept on for quite a few years, and we started to call it the Knife of the Year, or KOTY for short. This program ran from 2003 to 2011 when I left SOSAK after that original website was purchased by F+W Media, owners of BLADE magazine and the BLADE Show. By then I had my own little project (a little site called Multitool.org, perhaps you have heard of it?) which had started to become quite well established in it's own right, and I wanted to concentrate on that. This was also when we started what you all know today as The Swiss Army Knights. Many members of Multitool.org, especially in the early days had come from SOSAK with me, and helped get this little forum off the ground.
What does that have to do with this month's Donation Draw? Simple.
I have three of the KOTY knives that are spares (don't worry, I am keeping mine!), and for the next three months I am going to post them as Donation Draw knives. Each one is a different model from a different year, and I can pretty well guarantee that you will never spot one of these available anywhere ever again. I don't recall what the production numbers were, especially as Travis handled them all, and those details went with him.
In no particular order, this is the first of three- the 2010 Knife Of The Year Secret Order of Swiss Army Knives Wenger EVOWood 18.

These were some of my favorite KOTY models. The walnut scales were contoured just like the plastic versions of Wenger's Evolution lineup, but in gorgeous wood, and instead of raised Wenger name, it was carved into it. The texture of these is indescribable, as I am sure anyone who owns an EVOWood will attest, and this one is even more amazing with the SOSAK logo and 2010 engraved right into it.
If you aren't familiar with the Evolution 18, follow this link to SAKWiki (http://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=EVO+18) that discusses the model in detail. You can also read more about this specific knife on the Swiss Army Knights website (http://swissarmyknights.com/articles/2010/october-2010/276-2010-sosak-knife-of-the-year) where all of the old SOSAK articles are kept.

Read more about the KOTY program in general HERE (http://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=SOSAK+Annual+Knife+Series).
The usual rules apply- donate a minimum of $10 to the Forum Operational Fund (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?action=treasury) by clicking the (https://forum.multitool.org/Themes/default/images/x-click-but21.gif) (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?action=treasury) button or by following this link (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?action=treasury):

If we hit the goal of $275 this beautiful piece of history will find a new home. If we hit the goal before midnight on the 15th (Forum Offset Time as usual) then I will add another Early Bird Draw prize.
If for some reason we don't manage to make the goal for the month, this one will go back into my collection, and may not see the light of day for another eight years, and you wouldn't want that, right?

You can't say no to that beautiful wood grain, can you?
And, I am going to make this one extra special for all the old SOSAK members out there and double your chances of winning by giving you guys two for one on entries to show my appreciation for you sticking with me all these years.
Any questions?

That is one awesome SAK!
-
It was an awesome SAK even before we got Wenger to poke holes in it. Now it's smurftastic.
In fact, I considered asking Micah to turn off the censor in this thread so that people could react to it properly but I was concerned the software would overheat and burn down the server. :o

Nice one boss - It's a beaut - And completely unique !! :ahhh
Still a it confused about SOSAK, SA Knights, VSAKCS etc etc - No need to explain ....... again !!!
Although I did discover a link to a missing SOSAK month in the Wiki Hunter page recently - June 2008
It contained an article on the Victorinox RAF Hunter
http://www.sosakonline.com/index.php?%20option=com_content&task=view&id=330&Itemid=35
I could not find that month in the migrated databases in SAKnights
Any chance of finding it ? ??? Thanks
-
I should have a backup somewhere, but it might take some time to resurrect and find
-
Thanks Whoey - That would be great if its not too much trouble
The whole month (June 2008) is missing if you search on SAKnights
All the others around it are there eg May, July - So it's a bit weird - It looks like there were no articles that month
But then there is the reference to it in the Wiki - I also searched on RAF and Hunter etc in SAKnights - And nothing came up - So the article at least is almost certainly not there
-
If I recall, Dunc may have written that one. I will send him a message to see if he can stop in. Whether he wrote it or not, he probably knows more about that particular knife than anyone else I know.

Hi everyone , I’m not sure if I wrote the article or not ( I probably did thinking about it.) they were kept in the survival packs under the seats I believe of RAF jet aircraft. Im now off to work but I’ll see what info I can find. I also wrote a fair bit about the RAF J knife that strapped to the pilots leg upside down in a metal sheath.
-
Thanks for popping by Dunc! :tu:
When it comes to the RAF knives, yours is always the first name that pops into my mind!

don't get too excited yet, although I have a backup it might take some fiddling to get the right server setup to run it as it's all old long discontinued software. And there's a long list for me to get to first... wonder if maybe it's on the wayback machine somewhere?

In a way, this is a historical piece even outside of the SOSAK, as it is the first model from the "Delémont Collection" to carry the Vic shield ;)

Close!
2007- Wenger EvoGrip 16: The first Knife Of The Year from Wenger, the EvoGrip 16 also featured the SOSAK logo laser etched into the black rubber grip panels. It came housed in a classy hinged metal, velvet lined presentation box.
2009- Wenger RangerGrip 78: The second Knife Of The Year from Wenger, the NewRanger RangerGrip 78 features the SOSAK logo, and year laser etched into the black rubber grip panels. It came in a hinged silver metal presentation case with velvet lining.
It was actually the third. :D

Sorry to hear about your
damage to your rental property Grant :(

Thanks Steve.
I'll get to the draw today. I finally got internet access hooked up a few days ago and I am trying to play catch up. It doesn't help that I had to drive a thousand miles through the worst winter storm of the year (so far) to get here, only to find out that those smurfing smurfs caused lots of damage to my place.
Anyways, I will get things back in order soon enough, and I apologize for all of the delays. Things should be back on track shortly. :D

Sorry for the troubles, Def.
We rented for a while and our landlord kept going on about what great tenants we were. It was nice at first, but then became a bit ridiculous.
"Thanks, but we're not really doing anything to be great tenants."
"Oh, no you guys are great tenants! You fixed the screen door and you pay your rent every month. You guys are fantastic!"
I guess doing the minimum to fulfill a rental agreement is now considered "great" behavior. That's a sad state of affairs...
-
We've been renting here for almost 5 years now. I've fixed a couple minor issues but have not had anything big go wrong. I told them about a toilet leak and that I got it fixed, but the floor has a little damage, I am going to replace the vinyl tiles pretty soon. I guy stopped by today to let my wife choose the floor she wants in the bathroom and kitchen, they are starting Wednesday to replace both floors with Laminate instead of cheap stick on tiles. :woohoo:

Hi Whoey - Sorry missed this earlier
You found the post - Brilliant - Thanks so much - I'll put a link in the Wiki to this page
When I looked the images were not there - But there is still lots of useful text
Couple of Qs - Have the images gone? and Will the link be reliable/last a long time?

I have old backups of sosak somewhere, hoping to find time to do a local install and see if I can pull better data (the old sosak site runs old software that won't run on our server, so I'll need to run it on a local setup with older PHP) If I can manage that, then I should be able to import it all to swissarmyknights and fix the archives.
The images are easier, since I don't need to pull them out of a database.
If there are specific images you're after, let me know and I'll pull the images only from the backup.
