Ok so some friends of mine at work are pressuring me to join Facebook :o, and I've always heard that it's incredably addictive and best avoided if you want to have any hopes of maintaining any sembelence of a normal life :D
So is it worth joining ???
Or should i tell my mate's 'Hell No Sister' :D

Is that Facebook or MT.org :D

I can't stand it mate and only go on there when someone adds me as a friend.
-
FWIW I do have a FB account but find myself spending most of my online time on mt.org/kf/bf forums and only resorting to FB in the (unlikely) case there are no new posts to read... :)
-
I can't stand it mate and only go on there when someone adds me as a friend.
So you NEVER go on it then ;)
-
I can't stand it mate and only go on there when someone adds me as a friend.
Well the girls there want to keep me in the loop as to what happening at work, and I'd hate to come to work wearing the wrong colour nail polish :D
-
Facebook is just another site, and it will only consume you if you let it. I have a FB account and I visit it a little more often than I used to, but it doesn't consume me, I am not addictive and really it's just another tool. Don't listen to the hype- it's all weak minded fools that get suckered in.
Besides, if you don't care for it, you can always delete your account or just ignore it. It's not a big deal.
However, if you've ever sat and wondered "whatever happened to..." you can use it to look them up. Since so many folks are on Facebook, you can find people you haven't heard from in years. Of course the other side of the coin is, if you haven't heard from them in years, how important to you can they be? :P Still, I've talked to some people I knew back in school (all levels, from pretty well all the schools I've been to) and it's neat to see where everyone else ended up.
If you join, make sure to add me and join the Multitool.org group... not that much happens in there, but hey, why the heck not! :D

Can't they just email then?
Facebook is a good idea, but you constantly get crap emails where you are asked to join groups, sent "drinks" and other cack, and asked to play games. Sue is on there a lot but she is billy no mates so doesn't get too much grief. :D
-
My wife and all her girlfriends seem to really like Facebook. :D

You know.....You can block invites from a spesific application or person, I hardley get crap mail anymore.
-
Can't stand it personally. If I like people, I generally try to stay in touch with them in the real world, ergo, the never ending list of stupid requests I get on facebook are from people I don't like.
Granted - you can choose not to get any invites (I think), but then what's the point of going there in the first place?
Plus, I thought you had to be under 16 to use Facebook :P

I have an FB account and use it more than I used to. I do like one game they on there though. Mob Wars! Its very addicting, I play it between posts here. If you want to add me look for Zack Fraser, there is a picture of me taking a picture of myself.
-
I'm against it, mostly because my employees think they are allowed to check it during the day, and because I've had to wait in queues while the goddamn receptionst comments on someone's picture!
Also, I've got no friends, and that's just depressing!
I can certainly see it's appeal for people with large, unwieldy networks, especially if you want to organise parties, or share pics with mates (saves telling each other to visit each other's photobucket gallery all the time to see that one pic of you being a drunken smurfhole last weekend)
on the other hand, if you're the kind of person that only has half a dozen close mates, and probably sees most of them every fortnight anyway, bugging each other with pointless commentary and chit chat every other hour of the day strikes me as inane.

Think of Facebook as an internet within an internet
-
That's a pretty good analogy actually.
Anyone here use linkedin.com? It's a bit like facebook, but geared specifically to work / professional stuff. That's actually quite useful.
-
I joined but haven't used it for since, just don't see what's addicating about it. If I wanna talk to somebody I'll go talk with them, if not then I probably wouldn't want to chat with them online either.

Done :)

I joined for the heck of it... why can't I find the mt.o group?

Nevermind... I found it

Yeah I guess so.
So, what happens now? Is there a point to it it or is it just a popularity contest?
I'm getting sick of clicking "ignore" too...

Well now is the time to go talk to all these people who are supposedly your "friends", but if you are anything like me you'll already speak to those that you want to so this is where it kinda becomes pointless. :D

I've found Facebook is great for finding old friends as mentioned. It is especially useful since I have moved quite a bit, and even moved countries... plus my mom, sister, and cousins are on there...

Sorry but I'm not joining it . My 13 year old Angel ::) is eating more and more into MY internet time to the point when I log on for 20 mins before I go to work and while I eat my evening meal :( Shes on the phone to her boyfriend just now so I can sneak on here ::)
I know of two people at work where Facebook has ruined their relationships because they have contacted old flames and their partners have found out . I think it would be great if your single though .

One of the reasons I avoid the darn thing is my best friends ex girlfriend who harrased me cuz he wouldn't answer her calls (they're on better terms now). I got a few ex girlfriends as friends on FB as well and try to keep my life as private as I can, but someone has to post that pic from some party when you have had a few drinks...

That's what worries me about these things John, how much people confuse the internet with the real world :-\

I was having a conversation (in the real world, using language) the other day about this very point. During my life. I have met people I like to stay in touch with, and plenty that I don't. Those that fall into the first category, I have their e-mail address or phone number or maybe go out for a drink with every now and then. The folk that fall into the second category however, I am blissfully unaware of (and that probably works for them too).
In Facebook, people seem to forget that neither of you have bothered to be in touch for 20 years, and that there's probably a good reason for that. It seems that it's a competition to get the most "friends", even if they're not friends at all.
I rejected one last week (on linkedin.com actually, not facebook) from somebody I fired for being the most obnoxious person I'd ever worked with. When I did the deed, they called me some names that I had to look up in a dictionary, made various claims about my parentage and even threatened me with a visit from their friends to administer a kicking :o
Now they want a job reference from me ::) Incredible.
@Nomad -> Yes I see the irony in typing all of this into an internet forum

Dave this guy used to like to bop his girlfriends around. I know we all joke about it here, and I have done my fair share on Natalie, but I cant stand people who hit women and kids. I feel they are cowards and serve no purpose in society.

Lets see, I have been out of touch with a lot of old friends because I now live halfway around the world from where I used to... so it's kinda easy to say there's a reason that you haven't been in touch for years... usually for me it's the long distance phone bill that deters me... that and I'm a lazy bugger (Def can vouch for me I'm sure :P)
I found Facebook to be a nice place to catch up with family, some old friends, ex-girlfriends, old workmates and old schoolmates... on the other hand I have rejected a few people who are little more than friend of a friend...
To think, without the internet, I wouldn't know were Def is or vise versa, and we've been friends for about 19 years or so... (holy! it's been that long already!?)

Yeah, I wasn't totally serious tbh Whoey, and I can see that it's useful in certain situations, but for some people, I stand by my comments ! :D

Has it been 19 years? Crap, no wonder I'm old and fat....
I like Facebook, as it's given me the opportunity to look up some people I have wondered about but haven't seen in years. My father was in the military, and we moved around often enough- although not as much as many families did. Still in all, there were a great number of new faces every year, and while I will probably never remember them all (or indeed most of them) it's still nice to see what some of the folks you used to know are up to these days. And, it's also nice to join certain groups, like the one for the base in Manitoba that I mostly grew up on, and was probably the happiest time in my life- at the risk of sounding pathetic, probably the closest I really had to a "back home."
And, like Whoey says, if it hadn't been for Facebook, I probably wouldn't have known he was coming back to NS to visit his family until after the fact... in which case there may not be nearly as many upgrades and new features here as there have been in the last 6 months or so.
Still, Facebook is like a multitool- just because you have one doesn't mean you aren't still an idiot....

facebook is a great way to find out what the hell you did last night, just see who tags you in photos and piece it together.
