Title: Badge Hunt! 30 Day Trapper challenge
Post by: countrydirt on September 01, 2019, 12:29:59 AM
I searched around and didn't see a badge for what is my favorite pattern of traditional pocket knife - the Trapper.  So I'm challenging myself to carry and use one of my several trapper pattern knives.

I'll start with this Case mini trapper. I've owned and carried it for around 8 years. I really like the size of the mini trapper for EDC.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190831/86d59020062c944b2076fe52152decba.jpg)

A Trapper was the or one of first pocket knives I purchased.  And still own, well over 50 yrs old, the knife, as I am older.

Used to skin and gut rabbits during hunting season, dress pheasants, when I lucky with the 20 gauge, and skin Muskrats that I trapped along the drainage ditches in the low lands were my grandparents lived.

It is a good pattern.

There is not a CASE badge, or a Trapper badge.  But, there is s Traditional Badge that you will qualify for after completing 30 days.

Remember to title each post with Day (number) {ex: Day 1}

I will try to keep up and follow your collection and use.

It had been in a wooden box, wth my childhood keep sales for probably 25 years before relocated and then assigned to a tackle box for fishing duty.  Yet, for a $3.00 drug store buy when I was 7 yrs old, a Japanese made Sabre has good steel that holds an edge even considering the abuse I subjected it to while developing sharping skills.

Day 2 - This is the first trapper I purchased and was probably my first "nice" knife.  The Camillus Yellowjacket has been with me for about a dozen years.  I like it so much that I decided to not carry a Leatherman today.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190901/783b09e797f8da4ea831f2a7f5c25bcf.jpg)

The Trapper is one of my favorite traditional patterns. Here are a few of mine:

Case Trapper
Case Slimline Trapper
Rough Rider Stoneworx Trapper
Rough Rider mini-Trapper
Rough Rider Fat Boy Trapper
Camillus Yello-Jacket Trapper
Boker double lockback Trapper
AG Russell Trapper in VG-10

countrydirt - Out of all these, I think the Yello-Jacket by Camillus is my favorite as well.

Day 3 - Today I am carrying a Uncle Henry trapper I've had for about 5 years.  It's a decent knife, but the fit and finish of this one is not like my 40 year old UH stockman (which I'll carry later in the month).

I'm a high school ag teacher and I always have a unit on hand tool maintenance and sharpening, knives included.  I provide the knives.  This one is taking me a while to get a decent edge back on it after I try to undo what a couple of classes of freshmen have done to it.  That's why the blades aren't open in the pic.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190902/1f190f514374411468a95dbc74d97130.jpg)

Day 5.  Old Timer trapper.  This is a post sale knife, so the quality is just not there.

This is my last actual trapper pattern knife.  I'll continue with a few other folders I have and then start back through.

This challenge for myself has gotten me to sharpen and where some of these knives that I rarely carry, so that's a good thing!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190904/adc377d25053bbf09282c84690fa9297.jpg)

I love the trapper design....that is why I have several. It is kinda the flagship knife of Case Knives...a lot of interesting materials and logos you can get in that pattern.

When I was in New Mexico last year, I was in line at a cafe and the guy in front of me had a Trapper in yellow delrin in a open top leather sheath. I liked it a lot so I made this one.

I think I took the picture with my Case Copperhead in it, but I designed it for my Trapper.

CD your model is called a "Back Pocket".

It's the same body as the Panama Trapper except it has a single blade.

That's a nice one to own.

PS: Case also makes a single blade Trapper.

When they come up for sale they'll usually bring 60-70 dollars in new condition..

Day 7 - moving into a traditional folder before I start lapping back around.  I bought this Uncle Henry in the fall of 1981.  This, obviously, is my most carried knife.  I've castrated quite a few calves with it, cut a few hogs and lots of other things.  It takes an edge well and is simply, a fantastic knife.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190906/1f7885a013864984059be01c522c0b8d.jpg)

Wow, when I left the farm in the 70s for college we were already banding the calves and hogs to prevent infections from cutting.

Nice Stockman.

Well, you know tradition!  Grandpa knife cut, dad knife cut, I knife cut.  We did and still do use disinfectant and in the dry country, I don't know that we've ever had an infection from castration.

Day 8 - this knife was my Grandpa's. I remember the Christmas when we gave it to him, probably around 1970.  After he passed away, Grandma said that I ought to have it.  It still takes a fantastic edge and could easily be my one and only knife.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190907/a342b9fcc3d2d3943a3a87ff30651e32.jpg)

I did not take into consideration the dryness for your area.  Yes, hot and humid most days in SW Michigan and the cattle always wondered about marsh/swamp areas along sides of the creek from the spring feed pond.

Had to wash down the cows before milking, making a muddy mess at edge of the approach apron.

Those were the days!

EVERYONE should milk cows for a while.  It sure gives you a real appreciation for a gallon of milk in the store!  And getting slapped in the face by a wet and smurfy tail is an experience that some people haven't had, and it shows.

Day 11 - decided not to change and just keep the china Buck in my pocket.  I made the little card/front pocket wallet last year and really like the way it turned out and the way it is wearing in.  I used some oil tanned scrap from a local leather shop.

I don't think the fit and finish is a nice as some of my previous black stockman Buck knives, but it still seems like a solid knife.  The blade steel seems just as hard as the USA made knives I've had in the past.

Doing them by yourself can be a challenge in itself. When you are with a group...way more fun! Way more!

Day 30 - Buck mini trapper. Here is  what I learned this month.  Trappers and traditional folders can do at least 75% of the things I carry a knife for.  Cutting string, rope, tape, opening packages.  I have moved to lock-backs and assisted openers or Leatherman for the most part with my daily carry, but I've enjoyed the small and easy daily carry of a regular pocket knife.   I'll likely go right back to lock-backs or knives with a pocket clip or my Wave or Surge just because they are all just a bit more versatile, but if I had to, I could get along just fine with a mini trapper like this one.
