Well I have been taking a lot of pics in the last few months and it has been hit or miss  Some have turned out really good and others not so much :D I have been messing with effects and such for the last day or so and would like to try my hand at editing them and messing with the contrast, brightness and other aspects  Any tips and tricks would be appreciated and I am trying to get some photo editing software as I am typing this and will see how that goes :tu:
I am also starting this thread as I was starting to hijack the calendar thread  :D

Any advice on this will be helpful and I hopefully can get a handle on this
-
I use Corel Paintshop Pro X9 at the moment. I switched over from Adobe Photoshop quite a while back as it does mostly the same thing but a lot cheaper.
Adobe Lightroom is ok...but I do not much care for it personally.

I take all my pics with my iPhone. Started using snapseed app to edit them. Simple and free

Already some good suggestions :tu: Thanks guys   :like:

+1 on snapseed, great for making pics look a whole lot better

I have been using mainly google Picasa for several years.
It is no longer officially available, but you can still download it.
Just turn off the update function, after you install it, so as not to get update messages all the time.
this link should? work
http://filehippo.com/download_picasa/

I find it better to adjust light first and then color. I also try to keep it as natural looking as possible by not going too extreme unless I'm trying for an effect.
-
I'm using Picasa as well. All the basic operations, and then some. It doesn't do mirroring or resizing though (for resizing Paint will do just fine).
-
picasa does resizing. you need to select the photograph and export it to the size you want.
all my photographs posted are resized with picasa

OK, didn't know that. Thanks.

More great suggestions and thanks for the link dks :tu:
Rained all day today so I didn't get to get out and snap any pics :-\

I just tweaked this one to make it a bit brighter and the colors pop a bit more  :tu:

Just set your phone to the highest res and focus in on it and push the camera button :D Sometimes I get lucky and sometimes I think it is a good shot only to see it on a bigger screen and it is blurry
Do you have a Samsung Galaxy S5  For some reason i was thinking you did ??? That is all I am using :tu:

I've been using Lightroom for years, and love it!

Poncho are you cropping your pics or is your camera set for a certain aspect ratio ?
I've noticed they seem to be short and wide. Or maybe that's the way flickr resizes them ?

It is set for 16:9 ratio which is the only way I can get the highest resolution on my phone :tu: I guess I have got so use to looking at them like this that I hadn't noticed that they look any different than normal  :D
If I go to the next setting down it is 4:3 and that would make for a better rectangular shape but it goes from 16mp to 12mp :-\ I am sure it might not make much of a difference but I take all pics in that format and if I was to change it back and forth I am sure I would forget :ahhh I can try cropping some to get a better image though :tu:
-
12mp should be more than enough. Most of my pics are 3mp or 5mp. I just started shooting some with 7mp, that's the max for my camera.
-
Yes I am using an S5, but I've always believed it is the photographer, not the camera that counts.
I am sure there are guys on this forum that can take better pics with a Polaroid or Fisher Price camera than I can with a top of the line Nikon and a full studio. :P

There are some VERY talented photographers here!! I consider myself lucky to be able to see the different styles that they offer. :)
I also have to say that I agree with what Grant said (damn it!). A good photographer can capture a great image no matter what equipment they are using. Saying to one "Hey, great pic. You must have a really nice camera" is equal to saying this to a chef "That food tasted great, you must have a really nice stove". ;)

Thanks guys :tu: It is a slow process for me as I was never one to take closeup pics of anything  I usually take pics with my phone of outings (vacations or weekend trips) and some of my work :tu: Outside lighting makes such a difference for me as I can never get lighting right inside and that whole process sort of baffles me  :D
-
I took this pic (as Steve reccommended) at a 4 to 3 ratio and I do like how this pic looks and then tweaked it some :tu:

The first pic looked awesome until I edited it and made the second one  Now it looks dull and boring :D That is river sand that we had delivered this morning in bags because we don't have enough room on the job yet for a regular sand pile ::) I patted it down and made it smooth and thought it might make a good pic  I almost had one with the ST 300 but to many people around and they might start wondering why I am taking pics of my knives and tools

Sweet pics Poncho .
And like you said, lighting is everything, outside natural light makes for those awesome :o pics, inside light sucks ...
I use "Digital Photo Professional", that's the software that came with my Canon camera (an old Canon EOS 400D), I never cut my pics, I believe a pic should stay how you took it (I mean sizewise).
And I take my pics in RAW mode, that way you can edit it a bit more, I tend to change brightness and contrast a bit at first (watch out, it's easy to "over do" it), and then I edit color saturation a bit, and at the end, I sometimes edit sharpness a bit (but again, watch out, since it's easy to "over do" it).
But like I said, it all begins with good outside light, some days every pics you take looks awesome, other days, you end up with two or three "good" pics out of the fifty ones you took, that's just the way it goes I guess ...
-
I appreciate the words TG :tu:
Yes I was going a bit overboard a first, also used some of the different effects that made the images look somewhat fake ::) I toned it down a bit and try to keep them as natural looking as possible now :tu:
Glad I am not the only one that happens to :D Some day's all the pics look great and others I can't seem to get one that isn't out of focus  :D
It definitely is a learning process and I have only begun so I have a long way to go to learn much about photography :ahhh :ahhh :D
