Title: Micro Toolclip at Walmart
Post by: jday2727 on October 30, 2016, 08:05:21 PM
Forgive me if this has been posted already, but my Walmart has a SOG Christmas set for 20 dollars that has a micro Toolclip and another small folder in it. I thought these were disco'd?

Sort of- they were never really offered.  They intended to launch them, then had difficulties with production and they weren't so much discontinued as forgotten about after the initial run.

I wonder if that's an old set or if they are coming back again?

I would be too- I really liked the second generation ones, which is why I really pushed SOG to make sure we were on the list for the first shipment to come in.  We got both Multitool.org ones and regular ones, and I consider it a huge win for the site that we did, considering no one else seemed to get any!   :ahhh

I would say that until now (maybe?) the second generation ones have proved to be much more rare than the originals!

I just realized, the handle only has sogs logo on it, not Toolclip. Would that mean that these are new production?

Here is the original second generation one:

It says SOG on it instead?  That's interesting, because I recall the above version was supposed to be the only one marked SOG, as the design was shifted to the Tool Logic brand, which SOG had bought the year before.

Got any pics?

What colors were there?

Come on man, we need the info!  Quit holding out on us!  :pok:

The only color was black. Here it is with the included knife and a closeup of the handle. Notice the different screws.

But they are promising some cool stuff coming for 2017 so you never know what they might have in store!

Is the Phillips end of the handle usable in this version, or in other words is it lower than the body of the tool when the pliers are opened out?

Unfortunately it is still even with the handle. However the bottle opener/Flathead works well enough as a Phillips.

I can't say as I'm surprised.  The MSRP on the 2nd Generation ones was $20 (if I recall correctly) so you are in essence buying the tool and and getting the knife free.

Speaking of which, does anyone have any feedback on the knife?  I haven't heard much, and what I have heard wasn't positive.

The knife is a very simple and slim lockback.
Construction is with 4 torx screws that are neither flush with the back scale nor set, so they hopefully are held in place with loc-tite or similar. The thumb hole is not smoothed out and has sharp 90 edges.
The back scale is smooth and without the embossing of the front. It is so small and smooth it is difficult to open one hand due the tension on the backspring vs a frame lock such as a Mini-Paraframe
It is thiner than the Paraframe and twice as thick as a Croc; both knives weigh in at 39g, the Croc is 38g

They may  release it independently later in the year like the MACV tool was last year if it gets positive reviews.
While the ToolClip has been well received the knife is a flop

Crkt  did similar a few years ago when it released the guppy with the eat-n-tool as a Christmas combo and the pack was popular enough  they were released at the next year and have kept it around. We could see the same done by sog

I picked one up and will get some pics of it up in a day or so  I also found the knife/Shard combo :tu: I  :like: that the Micro ToolClip has a PE blade on it :ahhh The little locking mechanism for the pliers is in a bad spot though  When you try to clip it into your pocket you sometimes release the pliers from being locked :bnghd: Other than that though it does seem like a great smaller tool :tu: If they have any when I go back I think I will get one for my Dad as he said he wanted a small MT that he could carry as the Freestyle he has is light enough but not feature dense enough for its size and the Wingman is to heavy ::) :D We'll see I guess ;)

So far I  :like: the Micro Toolclip  I really haven't gotten to use it but first impressions are good :tu: I am hoping it turns out to be a good lightweight option for me and if so I am going to get my Dad either this or a Style PS for Christmas with whatever else I end up getting him  He said that he might be more up to carry a smaller set of pliers :D He has several LM and even the Freestyle but all those are to heavy for him ??? These are small but seem very sturdy and make the pliers on the Style PS look almost weak :ahhh But this lacks scissors and the Style has scissors  Just have to make my decision when it is time I guess :D

Oh yeah, and I have to say that the knife isn't that bad.  It's pretty small and light duty but for what it is, it doesn't seem that bad.  Maybe after I use it a bit I might change my mind about it, but 've seen worse that cost more.

Thanks for the photos, guys. This is really tempting for $20. I might have to go see if they have them at my Wal-Mart. I wonder why there's nothing about them on SOG's website. Surely they didn't start making these again just for Wal-Mart?

Got one at wally world today. I really like it so far.

For those who can't find them they may be somewhat hidden.  I thought they didn't have them but randomly noticed them above the ammo really high up. I had walked past it a few times in the last couple days and never noticed them.

I'm glad I got a couple of these because I'm kind of thinking of modding one.

The plier lock lever on the clip side of the tool keeps catching my pocket, which means that when it goes into your pocket it springs open and doesn't want to come back out.  So, I'm thinking of using my Dremel to grind down the knob on the clip side as it isn't really needed.  I'm also thinking of removing the spring on the handle to see how that works out.  I really don't care for sprung pliers, but maybe they are necessary on a tool this small.

I agree, but not high on my priority list for several reasons...

1. I only go nuts like that with Leathermans where I try to get one of everything. With the rest, I only try to get one of each model. Can you imagine the troubles I would have if I tried to get every colour out there for every tool made?!?!  :ahhh
2. The version ones are scarcer than hens teeth in my part of the woods.  :ahhh

I should add that my SOG drawer is getting tight.

I had to to get them. A SOG knife and tool for $20? Yes please.

I really like them both, too. Only minor complaints. The knife is so thin it's a little tricky to deploy one handed. The trigger that secures the pliers closed is easy to inadvertently fire. Besides that I think this package is a ridiculously good deal.

I like the tin, as well :tu:

I don't have a scale right now that can measure something like this, but it feels like maybe 3-3.5oz?

Of all the knives I have owned in my life, a SOG model, the Mini Pentagon was the absolute sharpest I have ever gotten, straight out of the box.  I think I was scared to use it, not because I was worried I would cut myself, but because it was the absolute most perfect factory edge I have ever seen, and I didn't want to ruin it.

Not that that particular story has anything to do with the price of tea in China, but every time someone talks about sharpness and SOG I think about it.

The blade is sharp on mine but build quality is a bit questionable. It was inexpensive but I am considering sending for warranty repair. The pin that holds the fixed side of the pliers is not peened properly and can be pulled out a bit. The file was a bit bent and one side has little to no texture.

Bought mine today. They mustn't have been out long--about two weeks ago, they didn't have the least idea what I was talking about, and I couldn't find them anywhere in the store.   In mine, they were in Sporting Goods, stocked in red cartons with Buck knife sets and a big Bowie. Got lucky--it was the last one in stock. Only thing I can complain about--the casting wasn't cleaned up on the Phillips driver/plier handle, meaning it looks chipped. Still works good. My file's a bit warped, but I don't mind that.  I like the solid build on the Centi II, but that huge cutout on the blade compromises strength, and the blade's a bit flexible as a result.

The absolute sharpest blade I've got from a MT was my SOG PP Plain blade, and I've had some nasty sharp Gerbes and scary treetoping knives from Leatherman (specially awesome were the Juice and Wave)

So I finally got around to looking at the knife (Centi II) and it's a bit of a mixed bag.
Mine has solid lockup, and feels sturdy, aside from the blade flex cody6268 mentioned. The blade is quite sharp, but it's also damaged right out of the box. It has a couple nicks on the edge. I was ready to give it a decent grade before discovering them, but on a brand new knife that's quite a big issue for me. Granted, it was just about dirt cheap, and I don't expect to be handed the world for $10 (if you assume it's half the bundle price.) But I do expect it to be undamaged if it's a new item. I've never received a Mora or Opinel with a nicked blade, and they're as cheap or cheaper. I can fix it, but I don't feel like I should need to. Ah well, at least the Toolclip is cool.

Except for the bendy blade of the knife I :like: this little lockback better than the frame lock that comes in the Gerber Shard combo pack from Wally World :tu: The Gerber has a better blade and a clip but it is very hard to unlock it and if that gets better and it should. I will be happy with it but as for the present the SOG gets my vote :tu:

I'm a bit less critical of the knife- everything Woods Duck says is absolutely true though.  I just look at it differently since I figure I paid $20 for the Micro Tool Clip and really don't care about the knife.  Mind you, both of mine are perfect, so maybe that makes it easier for me to not think less of them.

The knife is just so meaningless to me, that I doubt I'd be annoyed by it if it showed up on fire.

Indeed. I would have bought the Toolclip for $20 if that's all you got, so it's not a major thorn in my side. Though I had the thought that it would have been really cool if they did a Toolclip 2-pack for a bit more money with two different scale colors. Maybe red and green for Christmas?
Black is a solid choice, but some options wouldn't hurt.

First impressions: I love it! I need to run the knife over a stone but I'm pretty happy about this overall. The wire cutter works terrific and so do the pliers. I have not tested the Phillips yet.

That said - it needs much more testing/use. I need to know it is reliable and not just "neat" :salute:

I've been carrying and using mine since I got it and I have had no problems with it.

Well, now that I have modded it a bit I've had no problems.  :D

I found the switch opens as you put it in your pocket and the spring opens the pliers, making it difficult to take back out of your pocket, so I ground off the switch on the clip side and removed the spring from the handle.

There's been some negative feedback on that small knife, but I have to say, for a small knife it doesn't seem too bad to me.  I'm not going to use it to baton logs into kindling, but for small knife duties like cleaning finger nails and opening the mail it certainly seems to be more than up to the task.

I saw this set for the first time last week, but I passed on it. I ended up buying a Remington set that had a nice folder and a smaller slip joint knife in it. The scales were a nice dark green bone and I thought they looked great! The SOG knife did not do anything for me, and the tool was too small. Would love to see a full sized version of it. I may still snag one if I still have some spare cash after Christmas!

Any reason you stopped carrying it?

Nope   Just been carrying other things and it hasn't made it into the shuffle again ::) :D

Sounds like you need a Reactor too.  :D

Def
Oh I looked at those too!

My local Academy Sports had Reactors marked down to around $30 or so (I can't remember the exact price, but it was significantly less than I paid in March) so I would advise anyone interested in a nice little tool to go take advantage while the deal lasts

I agree - the Reactor is not a $50 tool. I think that $30 to $40 at most is about right for what you get. Not that the Reactor isn't a good tool, I like it a lot, but it's not a $50 tool IMHO

I would pay as much for a Reactor as I would for a Skeletool.  The build quiality may not be quite as good as the Skeletool, but I find the Skeletool to be far too bulky for what it is.  I have found myself carrying the Freestyle more often than the Skeletool for that reason, but since it is just pliers and a knife, I need to pair it with a SAK to get screwdrivers, which I almost always need for one reason or another.  Then, since the knife is duplicated the Freestyle then just becomes a set of pliers.... and if that was the case then I should just get myself a decent set of pliers and not waste time with Leatherman at all.

The Reactor solves that problem- it has all the function of the Skeletool (more in fact since it can take regular screwdriver bits) but in the size and weight class of the Freestyle.  Yeah, the Reactor isn't perfect, and getting the bottle opener out kind of sucks, but it functions a lot better than the bottle opener they didn't put on the Freestyle....   :pok:

Just saw my local Walmart has this on sale for $15 now

Can anyone else confirm this price at their stores?   I don't make it to Walmart often, but this would make it worth the trip!

It would indeed.  If anyone picks up an extra I'd happily take one (or more!) for that price!

Today the angels sang.  I visited 1 more Wal-Mart and finally found the SOG gift set and even better.... it rang up at $7.00 so I got it with tax, out the door, for $7.42. :woohoo:

The only question now is should I go back for the rest of them (there were 12 - 15 or so) and buy them up for trading fodder?  That was a rhetorical question, I already know the answer.  ;) :D

These are awesome prices. They were selling them for 19.98 in my Walmart. I know these were Christmas specials so you probably see more markdowns at this time.

At $7 is clean them out for sure!

I'd happily pay double that for a few sets if you do.

I picked up a few more of the micro toolclip gift sets and also some Buck, CRKT, and Kershaw gift sets.  I also took more than a handful of the Ozark Trail knives that were reduced to $1.00 a piece.  The department manager just happened to be standing there when I got there and he was saying to an associate, "I wish I could get get rid of all of this Christmas stuff so I could reuse the space and wouldn't have to account for it."  I said, "I'll have the lot, and don't skimp on the pâté."

I didn't clear them out entirely as I left behind the Camillus, Mossy Oak, Remington, and Gerber sets, as well as some other Buck sets that hadn't been reduced yet, but he told me I could come back on Friday and he would lower the rest of it.

I'll PM you my address so you can mail a check and you PM me your address and as soon as I have your check I'll stuff one into an express mail shipping box and get it right off to you. $20 includes the shipping within the US.  Anybody else let me know. :salute:  Canada will be a little more for the shipping.

Hey Alan hope you are enjoying the CRKT set. I've used the Viva a few times and like it better that my other OPMTs. And that drifter is just a bomb. High value for such a cheap knife. I can't get over it.

I found some of these sets on eBay for around $22 shipped.  I got the first one today.  I am a long-time knife and tool collector and I have to say that my first impressions of the tool are that it is very good.  The fit and finish are outstanding, although the blade on the tool was not very sharp.  It was a quick couple of passes on a sharpening rod to make it nice and sharp.  I have no experience with toolclips previously, but I own a number of SOG tools and knives.  This new micro toolclip is not as well made as say the paratool or something like that, but it is very good for the money.  I almost always carry a Leatherman Squirt PS4 and while the Squirt has a higher level of fit and finish, this new SOG pocket tool is definitely going to get some carry time and the PS4 will sit on a shelf for a while.  Part of this may be that I have XL hands and so the Squirt can sometimes feel a bit fiddly.  I really think SOG has a winner here.

Now, the additional Centi knife--too dull to function as an actual knife when I got it.  It needs more work than just a couple of passes on the rods.  Odd grind.  On the other hand, its a good size for keeping in an Altoids tin emergency kit and the basic build quality seems okay.  As some others have said, at these prices, you get the knife for free so its hand to complain.

I just did this as well, but I am going to use the $15 reciept to return the one I bought for $9 so I will get $6 back off the original.

Have come up with multitools, but before? One dagger was and shave and cut the meat and hit the enemy in the eye))
But seriously, it's pretty convenient things - you can say you have a set in your pocket for all occasions. Although I'm here for the kitchen normal knives can not find anything suitable - a good steel sets cost over and above, and from bad steel, there is no point buying. Does anyone have tips on what sets of knives to look for the kitchen? Looked throug those LINK REMOVED , but not sure they are really as good as described.

Welcome to the forum.  If you want to talk about knives and multitools you are welcome, however if you are here to post affiliate links like the one in your post then you should know that is not allowed here.

You may also want to at least try and find a thread pertinent to the link you are going to post if you want to look at least partly legitimate.  This is a thread about small pocket plier tools and has nothing to do with the kitchen knife sets you are trying to promote.

Sorry, my mistake, that was not for promotion, I`ll refrain from links in future. But I`ll still be glad if someone can suggest anything suitable. I'm tired of sharpening knives every evening.

I'm curious why spammers always lie about their intentions when called out.
In this case, it was pretty easy to find the other sites you spammed with "articles" from the same generic affiliate site. You won't get any hits here without a paid membership, so why bother trying to pretend you're here for anything other than promotion?

The Multitool.org Store is an authorized Victorinox dealer- perhaps you would like to order a nice set of Victorinox or Forschner knives for your kitchen?  I am a big fan of the Victorinox Santoku knife.
