Awesome!!!!
That's what I thought when I first laid eyes on the Moki. The Moki and the Hartkopf (see above) are definitely my most beautiful knives, and the most expensive ones. Each would be worth 5 to 10 brand new SAKs and they have caused major holes in my SAK collection. No regrets, though.Pioneer Harvester and Moki limited edition. "And what's so special about them?" = hmmmm to me personally - The Quality 1st of all , the LOOKS , the materials used , the F&F , the lock is a biggie IMPO (fingers never get in way of blade on open or close) , the Variety on 1 pattern - like SAKS(colors/blade steels) , Smoothness of opening, quick access for self protection , and it just feels right. :tu:
A true CLASSIC in my opinion

black - satin blade
black - black blade
black custom scales (Allen Putman) - satin blade
blurple - satin blade
digi camo - black blade
digi camo - satin blade - son has right now
"And what's so special about them?" = hmmmm to me personally - The Quality 1st of all , the LOOKS , the materials used , the F&F , the lock is a biggie IMPO (fingers never get in way of blade on open or close) , the Variety on 1 pattern - like SAKS(colors/blade steels) , Smoothness of opening, quick access for self protection , and it just feels right. :tu:
A true CLASSIC in my opinion
Very nice! :like: Makes me feel like showing off a bit...
You've made me want to carry my Kamon Fuji... so here tomorrow's carry: Victorinox Windsor, and MCUSTA Kamon FujiYou're a true gentleman. I wish you a happy day tomorrow!
^^ Very nice, Glen. Work or hobby?
Cool. For a moment I thought you were in the same line of work as I am. Here's a pic of my working gear for tomorrow. The Opinels no. 12 stay at home, I'm taking a fixed knife instead.
Only partially. The heavy machinery and the larger tools are paid for, but I like to bring some of my own more familiar things. I also do private work sometimes so I really need a set of tools of my own.Cool. For a moment I thought you were in the same line of work as I am. Here's a pic of my working gear for tomorrow. The Opinels no. 12 stay at home, I'm taking a fixed knife instead.
Nice equipment! Since you use this for work, does that mean you're lucky enough to have your boss pay for all that stuff? 8)

Before I forced pitina on it by wrapping a ketchup soaked paper towel overnight it would rust in minutes. The pitina slows that down alot but I still have to dry and oil after use like this in wet weather.

High of 20 low tonight about 8.
I'm not in a challenge this month so I finally get to carry my Champion (birthday present to myself back in September) and I'm pairing it with a Leatherman Sidekick which I also acquired while in the challenges so I haven't had a chance to carry that either. I'm very happy with this pairing. Worth the wait.

I had an opportunity last year to buy my small Sebenza 21 at a very good price, it was secondhand, but basically in "as new" condition, so I couldn't pass it up, even though I don't really neeed it... It's a lovely thing, though.

Amici,Just got rid of my Damascus Skyline, was a good knife that was sharp and light.
Today for our Monday EDC needs, we have a Kershaw Skyline in Damascus with Titanium standoffs replacing the ugly and cheap looking plastic backspacer along with a Titanium custom deep carry clip.. Plus an Explorer and the Nitecore TIP to brighten things up a bit..

How have some of you found the durability re bone knife handles/scales ???

well I have almost no experience with bone scales, but I'm sure that the people at the "Edged Tools" sub forum will be able to help you a lot, or even ask the same question on the "Traditional Knives" thread, this one below:

...Tell me more about that fixed blade....
Thanks. I'm not sure what I can tell ya.

I've had this knife for many years and it has slowly become a favorite. It was made by a little-known knife genius: Nick Allen of Michigan, USA. The stamp on the ricasso is "NWA" for his initials. I have a couple of other NWA knives and they are all excellent. I think he stopped making knives for a while, but you may be able to track him down on-line or find one on E-bay.
He is a master of design as well as fit and finish. Here is a closer look at the handle on this one:
Black & Tan micarta. Immaculate finish. Keep in mind that this knife has something like 8-10 years of periodic use. The handle with it's single finger groove and top jimping is very comfortable, but it's kind of a large blade. However, the oversized choil and a second run of jimping allows one to choke up nicely and with great control.
Here's where I may get into trouble: I think (can't fully trust my memory here) that the steel is O-1 tool steel. As you can tell from the first picture, Nick does an edge quench leading to a differential heat treat. (Each of the knives I've gotten from him have been done this way.) I'm not sure how he achieved the spalting on the blade. Cool though. If I had a criticism of this blade, it's that the edge feels a bit too hard. Might be my imagination, but I get that impression when I sharpen it. As a result, I tend to baby this blade a bit to avoid chipping it (hasn't ever happened, so maybe I'm too cautious). It is a great cutter.
I'm not sure if he made the sheath or had it made. It's a heavy leather that is hardened with hot wax. It's practically waterproof and wears like armor. It came with a dangler option, but usually I wear it on the belt.
Not sure what else I can tell you.

Very cool hawkbills. I don't have any of those in my repertoire. I do like the idea of a Karambit though. But you've inspired me to get better 'tooled up' today (Camper, Necker, Rambler, Critter):

As you know, I just started the Rebar 30-day challenge to see if I can add a pliers-based multitool to my EDC. I'll just have to follow here for a while without my SAK, but with an envious heart. (http://www.pic4ever.com/images/127fs4730978.gif)
Another nice tool set!
How's the edge retention on the H1?
I've got an H1 plain edge, but I reserve it for aquatic adventures and don't really use it.
Nice balance of tools there.

That is an old Buck 422. I got it in an Ebay purchase of TSA knife lot of about 100 knives. It had a broken blade that I re-contoured my self.
Been carrying that one at least 5 years.. That is everyday for 5 years. Even the month I recently spent in the hospital & rehab it was in my pocket.
I will try to get some better photos of it tomorrow & post them.

Here are the picsof the Buck422. As I said the blade may look a little strange because the tip was broken off when I got it. It is very light weight , the Buck name for this series was Bucklite. It coresponds to the Buck 112. The 424 as the mate of the 110.

I really like how the handle looks like horn/wood in color but it's actually plastic.
Seems very well done
as for resharpening and re-tipping, I've found that soft steel, inexpensive blades gain much performance after some thinning and even then they are still easier to sharpen (less steel BTE) and they won't chip like harder, more expensive steels at those thin angles. WIN WIN :gimme:

Mine has already gone for a ride in the washing machine (thanks Mrs Thunderpants!) with barely the slightest scratch. The alox coating on these is tough! Good job Buck USA!
That Karambit looks wicked, too.
I never learned to use one, but they sure look like fun.
Nice! Not the first time the Roadie has caught my attention...looks like a useful design. :tu:Yeah! It has a bladeshape that is very "non-scary" for people otherwise react to knives, but great is that you can pinch the blade at the detents furthest out and do very precise work.
But you have coffee!
(I like the way the edge catches the light in that shot. Kewl. (http://www.pic4ever.com/images/wassat.gif))

I guess they are all hand/custom made?
Nice, legal carry here as long as you are wearing the national dress (and not waving it around in a nightclub or tescos) Traditionally in entering someones home as a guest you would leave your heavy weapons at the door and reveal your hidden weapons to your host as a mark of respect, tucked into sock so everyone can see it, i had a nice one but lost it many moons ago...besides i don't have the legs to wear a Kilt :D

The cool thing about it is it's legal in most of Europe cos it's not a one-hand opening blade... but you can open it one handed cos the concave shape of the blade gives you just enough purchase to thumb it open. Don't even need the nail nick.
It's super-pretty and easily the most expensive knife I've bought for EDC use. (I have some Damascus Pioneers etc but they are in buried in a cupboard, waiting for the day they're worth half a bitcoin.)
Blade is a fingerprint magnet. But it goes like a laser through apples and cuts tomatoes to molecular thinness!

Locks aren't illegal everywhere in Europe. The cool thing about it is it's legal in most of Europe cos it's not a one-hand opening blade... but you can open it one handed cos the concave shape of the blade gives you just enough purchase to thumb it open. Don't even need the nail nick.

I'd assume it's illegal in most of Europe due to the lock?
I have seen that a few times on the net before.
It also applies to Spydercos, called the "Spyderdop", where you pinch the blade in between the thumb and index just over the hole, you pull the knife out and make a small dropping of the wrist so that it opens and locks ;)
Might try it out, but not with your gifted 110, so beautiful to risk throwing it across the air and bang, ding, scratch or break the knife and scales! :ahhh
also pointless after having so many OHO folders!!

I don't understand how the Griptilian has earned this reputation with knife people.
I think of this Gripy as being a 'top tier' knife: G-10 scales, open-pillar construction, CPM-20CV blade steel, nice long clip blade. I'd put this up against my Sebenza or PM2 any day. Great ergos; I've left the clip on, but I'm tempted to take it off because the handle shape is so good.
I don't think the Griptilian, not in this configuration, deserves it's reputation as being a mid-tier knife. I gave my wife my last Griptialian (the sheepsfoot version with 1/2 serrations, 154cm steel) and she loves it. It's been an outstanding performer for both of us. Sure the zytel (?) handles feel a bit 'plastic', but they have been indestructible (with normal use).
Consider: the most basic Griptilian of today would seem like an absolute marvel, if not miracle, in 1800, maybe even 1900. We are blessed to live in the "Golden Age" of pocket knives (all knives really). I suspect that in the future, fewer knives will be available to people as societies and laws further restrict their use. As sales and profits fall, innovations will likely dwindle away. The knives we have today, may just be the best knives ever. And the Griptilian has to be counted as one of them.
:bud:
Solid choice, Mags. Although I prefer the longer blade of the full-sized Griptilians. Nice all-around blade size. And a sweater I hope! Hope the fishys are biting today

I don't have a Boker. Worth trying, are they?
Be aware there are 4 "Boker" subdivisions, from more expensive to less: ;)
Boker = Germany, good and solid quality, interesting collabs and designs, excellent F&F
Boker Arbolito = Argentina made, decent quality, average steel and HT, sexy shapes and odd blades
Boker Plus = China made, not good value on most models, standard steel and HT, shoddy QC and F&F
Boker Magnum = China made, rock bottom quality, loose tolerances, pot steel, dubious HT, bad finish and action, poor durability
it's one of the brands with more variation in its offerings at all levels :salute:
do your research! and then you'll most likely not be disappointed :tu:
How strange. They make that knife in Germany but don't sell it here!Yeah, so strange! it's a Solingen whittler knife not sold!
Stoneshank, I'd be more than happy to ship it to you. Thanks man. But like Ron wrote, it's hard to warrant the cost. Also, the reason I got back to my teenage hobby of SAK's was my failed attempts at finding a whittler knife. Now I make my own by remodeling SAK's.
Shank--- you aren't kidding about the Biker Whittled.. Its $60 on US Amazon and I'm sure it would be an arm and leg to ship cross pond. If it is any consolation, here is the cheaper Rough Rider version:Yeah they are super expensive. The Rough Rider had two sheepfoot blades. There are differences etc. But currently I'm happy with experimenting with SAK builds. Guess I could get a Flexcut but I don't think I'm where is not up to me anymore just yet, whittling wise

The pokey thing about 7 inches long is for use on the end of a rifle if you run out of ammo (you're in deep kimchi if you ever do; a recipe for a very bad day).
Clue for those familiar with the UK military and countries who derived their military structure from the Commonwealth:
Prior to WWII, they, or an equivalent, were carried by officers in the army and marines. Fell out of common use when WWII ended. You will see many portraits of army and marine officers holding them.
While not as prevalent, they were carried by many officers in the US Army and USMC up through the Vietnam War with usage dropping and varying some since then. I don't know what the practice is with them now. They were always an optional item. It's not uncommon to see unofficial portraits of generals holding one. Won't see them in the Navy or USAF.

I paid $60 for mine from the States -> Europe and it's a fun little blade, but I am glad I didn't pay 140 euros or whatever it costs here. (Luckily customs didn't intercept it so I paid no import tax which was nice.)I think the handles design on the meerkat are curious. How is it in the hand? The df2 is a tested design , a bit too small still. I prefer the chaparral FRN to it. Chaparral is just stupidly amazing at slicing!
The Dragonfly is a better design, really. Better blade shape with a little bit more cutting edge. So I like the Meerkat but wouldn't weep copiously if I didn't have one!
(http://www.timelessjewishart.com/EDC_zx/trio_black.jpg)Daaaium, that Lionsteel .. Nice one man! that g10 scales on the sd? Love the colour coordination!
That's very kind of you Stoneshank but I already have a Dragonfly - albeit in stainless steel - so I have a pretty good idea how the ZDP Dragonfly must feel in the hand. (I have a Native and a Stretch in FRN so I know what that material feels like. At first I couldn't believe how ugly it was - but that's another story!)Nah I'm eventually gonna give in to the temptation in getting a meerkat, it really looks sexy!
However if you'd like to take the Meerkat for a spin you're more than welcome. It would have to be soon however as I am off to the UK at the end of the week, taking hand luggage only, which means no Vics or Spydercos or anything else for a whole week! Kind of like going to rehab.
PS a picture comparing the Stainless Dragonfly and the Meerkcat.

Temps were down to 50oF in the mountains; there was still some snow on the side of the roads up there! Out on the high plains, temps jumped up to 80oF. And a fresh bacon-burger for lunch didn't hurt morale, either:

One thing I will say about the Meerkat - those ugly indentations on the handle make it a remarkably grippy little knife. Once you grab it, it isn't going anywhere - unlike my slippery stainless steel Dragonfly!I'll getting, probably next week, a Böker exskelibur ll (with thumb flipper instead of nailgroove) in Ti. I'm gonna pay it off during summer but it's still worth it hopefully.
It's also nice that it is a slightly unusual knife, with its strange locking mechanism.
Meerkat, Ladybug, and a Cadet for size comparison!

Thanks TP, i have another couple that are crying out for some type of wood stain as they are very pale and featureless but there's not much that can be done if the grain isn't there :( i am a huge fan of wooden handles so it doesn't bother me too much but i may spice them up a bit in the future :tu:
Ron yes it's the Craftsmen 175 carpet knife/felt knife, a multitude of uses from garden work to woodworking but used for cutting leather, felt and indeed carpets, but i don't use it for that so don't know how effective it is, carbon steel hawkbill with a Birch handle..what's not to love :D
This one may have had a different product name as it was made by KJ Eriksson so it's a pre Morakniv Mora from before the merger but certainly looks the same :salute:

Meerkat, Ladybug, and a Cadet for size comparison!Nick Shabazz just in the last days releaseda review of your meerkat !
Thanks for that Stoneshank! I pretty much agree with everything Mr Shabazz says - the Dragonfly is a better idea in most respects, but there is something unique and charming about the Meerkat.I wish but this whole summers budget it's the Böker exskelibur ll. They sent me one with nailnick first (the site has all the data and pictures of a ll with thumbflipper), then they sent me it's bigger brother (which I love but can't get myself to carry due to size) because "we don't have the ll work thumbflipper".
I tried the method he suggested for closing it - it didn't make much sense to me. I can close mine one-handed using the normal method - pushing a thumb down into the dip with the Spyderco logo in it, then reaching a finger forward to tap down the blade. I also can't say I was bothered about the jimping or lack of it - it sits firmly enough in the hand for you not to worry about getting friction from every single possible surface.
It definitely sounds like you should get one while they're still affordable!
.
.
you got lots of cool old discontinued folders Ron! ::) :like:
"Congratulations on purchasing the Excalibur (or finding it in a lake). You are now King of the Britons. This blade has magical powers and can only be wielded by a true king. However, adding jimping will negate those powers and void your warranty. Hail Stoneshank, King of the Britons! You can find more magical swords at www boker dot com..."

no as much as the 710 I bet :pok:
Thanks mate! if you ever miss it heavily I will send it back to you
I think that that 710 has found a happy home. I suspect it is fulfilling it's destiny better in your hands than it ever could in mine. :tu:
This is likely to be my carry for the next 30 days.......
Definitely a place for the Classic since the PAD doesn't have scissors.

I have to admit that the PAD does not make a good first impression. But I'm going to give it a try.
.....I'm planning on starting a Summer-long SOG PAD challenge on 15 June. This will overlap with the 30-day PAD challenge. If.....IF....I complete my summer challenge, I'll have carried the PAD daily for 100 days. Should be a good test. Right?
Your photo got dropped from the quotation! :twak:
:worthless:
since I get to meet more friends, family and people during the weekend, I think the 710 will be my dedicated fancy off day carry :D
The 710 has a certain elegance that makes it conducive to social gatherings. :D

Thanks, Stoneshank.Cool, looks really comfy. One day when I'm wealthy. Until then I'll enjoy my boker exskelibur, Spyderco's and my price possession zt 0450!
I think it is a 943. An excellent little knife. Very easy to carry. You get a lot of knife in a small package with the Benchmade 940/943 family.
I sort of prefer the 940, but this model is equally excellent.

It's a Böker Magnum Outdoor Cuisine 3.
I acquired it mainly to be used for picnics, but I use it in the kitchen sometimes, or when I'm going somewhere I know I'm gonna need a sharp food prep knife.
It's a Böker Magnum Outdoor Cuisine 3.
I have a different Böker Magnum Outdoor Cuisine model, 440 stainless and a crappy liner lock but the knife performs well enough when used as intended. Still, I prefer the Opinel.Opinel are also great! :tu:

as long as you're not killing your food yourself and hunting your meat to death :ahhh the lock even if weak should be sufficient for your food knife

Yes.....I think for you the 110 still qualifies as a "little guy".
For me the 110 just seems like a standard sized knife. :)
And is that some kind of Navaja keeping it company?
I heard the cs kudu has a nauthgy closing operation that easily closes on fingers. Anything you can relate to?Yes.....I think for you the 110 still qualifies as a "little guy".

that's a Kudu from Cold Steel, a modern take on the classic Okapi African knife but with stainless steel and materials (Polypropylene handle as opposed to wood, and 4116 Stainless as opposed to simple carbon steel), :salute:
The Kudu is a wild animal from African countries, but I'm sure you already knew that :)

I do. I only have six or seven though.
But then I like other blades too.
A fixed blade :o shame it will rarely leave the kitchen, i picked it up as a kit with the intention of making it into a folder but i got carried away and couldn't resist making it :twak: easy part done, now i need to relearn sewing as it came with leather and string for a sheath, we got taught how to sew in school so i'm hoping at least some of it comes back to me, i did try last night but i couldn't even get past the threading needle part so gave up, i think i need glasses, delighted with the knife though :tu:
Great combo. And nice work on the knife! Sweet blade.
But, yeah, needs a sheath.... :pok:... :D
go for it!
A knife that does not get carried for lack of a sheath,
ain't no proper knife!!! :pok:
I shamelessly borrowed this photo. Is this not an elegant combination? Wow!
It's not a SAK + another blade, but it is a SAK + a giant hammer prop. Close enough!
That will work, but....you will need a "welt".
A welt--the thin strip of leather sewn into the edge--protects the stitching from the edge of the blade. Without a wel,t you are at big risk for cutting through the stitching and lopping you hand off. That would not be good, because it's harder to make a second sheath with only one hand. :D
.

Thanks Ray, Butch :tu:Oh, I agree! The Karesuando wins hands down it the wood department. Very nice, and that brings me to think I bought a knife from a maker who I’m not crazy about but the wood furniture was great and I bought it just for that reason.
With wooden handled knives its preferable to see them first, as its a natural product the wood varies a lot, the Hunter pro from others i have seen are consistently good, i don't think i have ever seen a bad one, i have a couple of Wenger and Vic woods that are a bit peely wally, compared to the beautiful colour and grain of others, quality is still excellent though :tu:
The Birch on the MBL i have is nice enough but could be a whole lot nicer, compared to my Karesuando below it is a bit plain looking so i will be looking to sort that :tu:

I answered in the other thread but they do look a bit similar to hoof knives but these are for wood, Victorinox do make hoof knives but i have yet to see a folding one, i always keep my eye out for one in case they ever did in the past as i would love one for my collection..not really interested in the fixed blade Vic ones though...yet

Syph007 Compacter, Spyderco Military
Thanks, Ray! :cheers::mail:
I've got big hands, so this Spydie works well for me.
Simple liner lock, nothing fancy here. But a great knife.
Does that beastie have a name? :think:It is called the Spyderco Gunting. Designed by Bram Frank. He designed it as a tool of escalation. The Spyderco was his second model. He now is up to a 5th generation with other companies.
I like a good-sized handle (read 'big), that looks really good! Not a problem
Thanks for the comparison shot. :tu:
Never seen one of those... with a penetration-limiter :D :tu:
I just realized the size comparison and here is a better one with the OHT.
Nice combo, Borg.
Is it fair to call the top knife a folding Kiridashi?
:like:
Correct Nix :tu: this one in blue paper steel (Aogami)Had to google Kiridashi and they are some very nice looking knives. Will look into these some more :like: :hatsoff:
Thanks Ray :salute:
Never seen one of those... with a penetration-limiter :D :tu:
Thanks for the links...they made me jump off the fence and hit that buy now button! In the past I used the Police as a compliant tool as it is on the long side also. The Civilian was well a little bit to much. Again thanks :hatsoff:Never seen one of those... with a penetration-limiter :D :tu:
it is a kinetic oopener, designed to be pressed on an opponent (laid on its skin or clothing) to open and deploy the blade, and also to be used as a kubaton or impact device when the knife is closed for a less than lethal option :salute:

Obviously your Dad is a wise man with good taste. :DHe did have good taste, and wise...he was the one who told me to always buy two when you find something you really like! The knife is in storage with some of the other SAK he had. :hatsoff:

For me, the Delica is one of those knives where its real-world performance seems to exceed its simple appearance and design. In my opinion, one of the truly great pocket knife designs. And that Delica has the ZDP 189 steel. How do you like it and how is it holding up? I’m more familiar with 440 and S30V.
Went a bit smaller and lighter myself today.
I've been having a renewed love affair with Spydies recently......
I really like the ZDP-189.
It's a higher performance steel than I really need. And sharpening does seem to be a bit tougher than, say, VG-10 or S30V. In some ways....I prefer S30V, mostly because I like to touch up my knives regularly. But, no question, ZDP-189 is a real performer.
I really like the ZDP-189.Well that is some great information, so if I come across the ZPD-189 I know to get it if the price is right. Thanks

I've tried a lot of steels and haven't found many that don't seem to work well if properly heat treated and machined. Some personal favorites are actually the older steels, maybe because I'm more familiar with them: 154cm, D2, 1095, 5160, O-1, A-2, and, at this point, S30V. However, I would get another ZDP-189 blade in a heartbeat. :tu:
I know right! It is a looker for sure! :cheers:Went a bit smaller and lighter myself today.

I have 2 Spyderco Stretch's in ZDP-189 and agree that it is an impressive steel, but, like you my preference is S30V.

I had a Bird & Trout (No. 8?). Great little knife. Also a longer, slim, curved model...don't recall which...model 4?Sorry - had to look up what I told you as the model number wasn’t right...its a Woodsman model 28. Knew it had to do with the outdoors.

Yes you are correct on the Bird & Trout as the model 8. The model 4 is the longer, slim curved Small Game and Skinner.

Oh, no, I like the way it looks now. Very cool. Looks used and loved. :like:Definitely loved for sure. Haven’t carried it in a while. It does open quickly with very little flicking. And when you go to close it...it drops to a certain point and will not close on your fingers. I like that!

New Ulu and the Compacter. I think after the Swiss Champ challenge I'm going to do a Fixed Blade challenge....with the Ulu. :o
Yes, a 30-day.... How could one not.......? :tu:Just found out about the watch award...so many awards. So little time.
:rofl:So will you be changing up the rotation and will you go with only one knife?
Here's my personal philosophy for a 30-day challenge: I use one (1) knife for the entire 30-days.I agree...one knife. For all the above mentioned reasons. :like:
I think that's the best way to use a 30-day challenge. I think that's the best way to learn about a knife's abilities and limitations. And, get to know a knife.
So, for a 30-day Fixie challenge, I'd choose one (1) knife, at this point my odd little Ulu, and use that exclusively. I'd probably also carry a SAK, but only use it when the fixie could not get the job done. Anything else doesn't seem as useful to me.
I was doubtful about doing a 111mm SAK challenge. I used a big Outrider. Wow! It wasn't that big a deal to carry an Outrider on a day-to-day basis. That's the benefit of a 'one-knife 30-day challenge', from my experience.
:tu:
I don't spend a lot of time in this thread when I'm doing a 30-day challenge because....I only have one (1) knife! Not a SAK + other blades.... :rofl:I was just thinking, how many fix blade knives do I have...I think 3. The Randall Woodsman, a Ka-Bar that is brand new in the bike frame pack, and a Izula which is a 3 inch blade. The Randall Woodsman would be my choice. :tu:
I doubt anyone wold get tired of seeing that! :tu:With you behind the camera...I would not doubt it. :tu:

This Spydie is the Nilakka, designed by Finnish knife-maker, Pekka Tuominen. I believe it is meant to be a folding Puukko.
But, yes, does have a bit of Japanese style to it, doesn't it?
This Spydie comes with a pocket clip, but feels much better in hand without it. I took off the clip and made a belt sheath for routine carry.
Very nice knife. Not cheap, but then, an original Tuominen is going to set you back quite a bit........ :o

Ever since I got my first fixed blade (which I gave away for Xmas, but a replacement is already on the way), I found myself wanting an axe
So today I got myself one! Granted, it's a cheap one from the local hardware store, but, I don't often need an axe... I mean, I haven't needed one since I was a little boy, going with my cousins to the woods to fetch firewood on Saturdays.
Maybe now I'll have an excuse to go chopping wood more often!!
I feel I should make a sheath for it...(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181227/bb78bbe80da951bff0bc0815bbe83d34.jpg)

While I dont have use of a large axe I do have a couple hatchets. They are very useful for splitting wood already cut into kindling for my fireplace. I've also used them for removing limbs from branches. I really like the one with a hammer head. A small axe is also great for unceremoniously taking apart pallets for bon fires.

Cool Randal. :tu:
Did you order this one from Randal or find it in a shop/on-line?Found this one in fly shop I visited yesterday...they have a killer knife selection. Victorinox included. I think it was 8 cases long! He had a couple of Bowie’s also. And the wait list is closer to 4 to 5 years!
Their wait list used to be well over a year...... :o
I have wondered if the Model 18 inspired Lile to make the Rambo knife.Don’t know about the Rambo ideal... :dunno:
I think the 18 got it's start somewhere around the Vietnam war.

The ulu is surprisingly handy, Mags. I'm carrying it for the current Fixie Challenge (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,80375.0.html).You are right about the workarounds with the knives. The funny part of that, is there usually is!
It is quite easy to carry and surprisingly intuitive to use. The symmetric design affords a wide variety of grips. This one is nicely made, with some D2 that takes a great edge.
The downsides are that it is somewhat limited by its small size, and there are times when the the handle gets in the way. With the hand positioned over the handle, my view of small objects, say a clove of garlic, can be obscured to a degree. And it isn't possible to make a downward cut through a large object, like a grapefruit, because the handle/one's hand gets stuck in the cut. It then becomes necessary to develop some workarounds. That makes using the ulu interesting.
One of the things I never really appreciated about knives with offset handles, like your Izzy, is that they afford the operator an unobstructed view of the work.
Overall, though, the Ulu is proving to be a fun and handy little knife. Punches well above it's weight and size. :tu:
True!

Lionsteel Kur with awesome wooden scales
The build quality is outstanding - every surface is milled and smooth. The sound it makes when it opens and closes is bad-ass. It's got that beefy click sound you usually hear in movies when Dirty Harry is about to blow some punk's head off.
My only disappointment so far is finding the wooden handled model (which I ordered directly from Lionsteel when they had a 15% discount day (Xmas, Valentines Day, Father's Day etc) doesn't have a pocket clip. Presumably because it would rub away at the wood too much. I found the VIctorinox olive pouch is a perfect fit for this beauty.
Yes I remember being tempted by those Giant Mouse knives as well!
At the moment I have a weakness for Italian knives. Check out this Viper Italo if you like green G10! (There is usually a little ramp on the top of the blade, but I removed it is easier to pocket carry without it.)
Shown alongside the wonderful Pioneer X.
