Nice!

One of the comments made me laugh - I have to ask, are these metric hex wrenches, or “Imperial”?

It finally arrived after several failed attempts.

It originally shipped in September but never arrived.  In October or November I contacted them and they (supposedly) sent a replacement.  It also never arrived.

Then in the beginning of December I contacted them again and they sent it again.  For some reason this one actually arrived!

Now that it's here I have to say that other than the shadow being really cool, I'm not sure this is much betree than many of the a $2 Challenge tools. I'll text it a bit over the next little while and update this thread.

I had a small scrap of damascus laying around so I sent it to Ace Bladesmith Ray Kirk and he's making a small prybar for me shaped like the Falcon. Here's a pic of the work in progress.

He still needs to round the edges a little bit and clean up the notch and attachment hole. Note that he made the attachment hole large enough to fit a Leatherman bit. Once that's done, he'll do the heat-treating and etching. Ray has done a bunch of neat pry bars for me in the past.

It's Devin Thomas stainless damascus in the raindrop pattern. I really like his steel because he uses AEB-L and 304, so it's really corrosion resistant after being properly heat-treated. I also have a cuff bracelet and ring made from the same stuff.

Of course, this really should be called pattern-welded and not damascus steel because real Wootz damascus is made using a different technique, but I don't see the point of getting stuck on a name. Frankly, I bet only a small portion of the true Wootz damascus was actually made in Damascus. It's like asking someone for Kleenex when you really are referring to facial tissue!

I don't think anyone actually requires Wootz or pattern welded Damascus to actually be made in Damascus any more.  And, I think that so much is pattern welded these days (Wootz only being a recent re-discovery) that it is, at least in modern times, as legitimate a Damascus as Wootz.

I have this article from Scientific American from January 2001 that discusses the rediscovery of the Wootz process and Damascus steel in general if anyone wants to read it.  It's very interesting if you are into that sort of thing.

As for that Falcon, well, Ray is an awesome guy and it looks like another typically awesome job!  It must have been a real pain for him to carve out the cockpit, but I see he's done his usual great work!

Thanks for the link! There was also a story on Pendray's work in BLADE magazine a while back. Another interesting read is Jim Hrisoulas' book on Pattern-Welded Steel. The techniques are really fascinating.

Ray really is a great guy. He made an awesome damascus bracelet for me from the same billet. I wish I lived closer to him so that I could attend one of his hammer-ins. He strikes me as someone who would be an excellent instructor.

In regards to the Falcon, was anyone else surprised when Chewie let Rey pilot the ship? I think there might be a little more to the story there. Maybe he's known her for longer than we realize.

Yes, I saw Ray's knife. I love the lines of his integral knives. Clean, smooth, and functional.  :tu:

Here's a pic of a set of matching money clips Ray made for me and my dad. I don't carry cash very often so mine doesn't get used that often, but my dad carries his daily and really likes it.

Interesting little novelty item, but being entirely zamac/pot metal, I probably wouldn't trust it to do any real work--especially when you can get a decent adjustable wrench and a driver with bits that store in the handle for less money.
