See you there!
-
That's awesome! Can't wait for the photos.
-
Can I make a polite suggestion
Take a hacksaw with you, Head straight for the LM stand, Get TL's attention, whip out your hacksaw and chop the frigging nose off the Surge...Y'know maybe...just maybe TL will get the subtle hint
 Even better, Take a big Nut & Bolt and a pair of Gerber MP600 Blunt Nosed, then attempt to undo big Nut & Bolt using ALL Leathermans line up, then finally as the huge crowd which hopefully will have gathered by now curios to see this spectacle .. whip out the Blunt Nosed MP600 and do the job properly.... :ahhh
Yes, that would surely do it >:D >:D >:D >:D
-
starts today right?
Looking forward to your posts, Kampf!! :salute:

All the hypes seems to be happening around leatherman and Sog. Wonder what Gerber or others have up their sleeves..

Come on Kam...throw us a bone!

I did a quick (8 hours)walk around to locate all the venders.
Without much of in depth discussion, just a quick induction of new products.
I had scheduled an interview with Tim Leatherman the man himself tomorrow.
Feel free to post any MT related questions here and I will try to find you answers.

Quick points:
Victorinox: Nothing new other than new scales, a small stand for making Spartan or Classic on spot as you order the "Wounded Warrior" project scales.
-
Quick point:
Leatherman: New Wave+, Charge AL+ and Charge Tti+.
Pre-production specimens were on display, the production model would have "+" stamped on scales. ALX is no more, the AL would have additional cutting hook on serrated blade. No other changes made.
-
Quick point:
Gerber: New Truss and Suspension Nxt
-
Quick point:
SOG: New Poweraccess Deluxe, PowerLitre and PowerPint, Keytron and Bite. Powergrab didn't do well last year and discontinued.
-
Quick point:
CRKT, new Technician and a Tactical Key.
-
By the looks of your Spyderco pic, it looks like a Spydie SAK is in the works! :)
-
:salute: :like: :like:
-
Quick point:
Spyderco, two new mutilitool knives, liner lock 8cr13mov knife blade with slip joint drivers, no phillips driver.
-
Awesome pics man, Suspension really has me interested. Looks from your shot that they addressed the major design issue with it while improving some features. If it continues to come in at the $20 pricepoint with better performance it could sell big for them.
Looking forward to hearing more on all of it!

I plan on doing a video on each of the new 2018 MT.

Seen the pics on that big foto of TL...
“It has to be perfect. My name is on every tool.”
Hope this means better quality for 2018. Just seen pics of a friends Juice CS4... the new one with shorter blade. Slightly used and never abused. But unfortunately, a backspring broke.

so far most things are boring, unrefreshing or pretty standard. >:(
I feel underwhelmed with what most brands have to offer.
The ones I liked the most where the new Condor Amalgam, the ZT Hinderer collab (obviously out of my price range and comfortable purchases), and the Spyderco multi tools (Even those were overpriced and seem like they have lots of wasted space)
Most of the new Kershaws looked very good, but considering that they are 2-3 times their US price here in Europe, I won't' ever ge my hands on them :P
Also Buck came out with their ultra lightweight 110 but I don't care for that model, just think it is nice and a long-desired addition to their catalog.
And even if I could have all the above for 1/4th of their retail price, I have too many tools and knives and stuff so I don't really feel like acquiring new stuff this year :D

Yup the Amalgam is a good looking knife :tu:

You are certainly not alone, the stagnant progression is what slowed my interest down in collecting Multitools.
Kamps discovery that LM's contribution for 2018 is to add a '+' to their existing line up does nothing to reawaken the spark I once had. Victorinox's predictable banal tool configuration along with SOG's naff China built tack is what's making me stay away. I applaud Gerber for the "Center Drive".
But seriously WTF!!
Dull Dull Dull
-
We continue to see new tools and they look different that the older ones (sometimes) but how much is innovative? Ever since the early 2000's I feel the industry has gone stagnant. Yes we have some very nice tools and they do a great job. But they all have the same style, same format, same stuff. Leatherman could have stopped at the Wave/Pulse/Supertool etc and stopped. They would still be making money I feel regardless of creating new designs. Am I the only one that thinks this way?

I would love to know why Leatherman will not create a Blunt Nose version of the Surge or ST300
I never need nor use needlenose pliers. They are a complete waste of time for me

spoke to Tim Leatherman for an hour, super nice guy, very down to earth, wrote down all my opinions and suggestions.
A few highlights of our conversation:
Request for replaceable cutter on Wave / Charge. Addressed.
Request for Blunt nose pliers. Noted.
Request for more focus and attention on developing MT for working men instead of hipsters. Noted.
Tim admits he thought the Tread was a gimmick and not sure about it, but it is selling as fast as Leatherman can produce it.
Tim was very curious about why my brother switched from ST300 to CenterDrive. My brother gave him a ear full.
Tim smiled and lightly hinted there is something in the work to counter it. ;)
Tim explained why he offers the 25 years warranty instead of the common life time warranty... A very interesting story.
In his time, magazines were full advisement of cheap junk knives and tools came with "Life Time Warranty", he felt such term was over used, he decided on 25 years. In reality, Leatherman's warranty is a life time guarantee.
-
Highlights of my conversation with Gerber:
Suspension has been Gerber's best seller for years, but it is an aged design, so they are offering Truss and Suspension Nxt this year.
CenterDrive is a big hit, we already knew that.
MP1 is not selling as well as expected, but the sale of MP1 military models are good.
-
Highlights of my conversation with SOG:
Powergrab is discontinued just after one year.
Reactor is discontinued as well.
There is only one sample of Powerlitre at shotshow, I did not get to exam it.
They did not aware of the issue of flathead drivers on Powerpint until I point it out.
Chris suggest we leave that part out of the video. :-[
-
Benchmade knocked it out of the park this year. Listened to all the feedback on "mini" knives of popular versions and executed. And came out with new innovative designs to boot.
Just wanted to add a positive note

Just your take on it, if you have time, they just launched a new rifle aimed (ahem) at the US market

""Request for Blunt nose pliers. Noted""
Thanks Kam :tu:
So, I wait though I admit I'm sceptical anything will come of it.
Personally I think maybe LM should swallow a little pride and outsource the plier head to speSmurfpillsts like knipex. It's ridiculous that 35yrs down the line replaceable cutters are needed to compensate for the fact that LM steel is smurfe.
Until MT manufacturers move away from the silly gadget idea, MT's will always (in my view) be a very poor substitute to "real tools"

Good to hear, thanks a lot!
Now we both have a signed Surge,

As for Tim I was also sure about his thoughts ont he Thread, glad you brought that up. Not surprising that it sells so well today, looking at how gear and MTs, knives etc. has definitely become affected by the "showoff", "Man jewelry" and "has to look nice in a pic" attitude fueled by the growth of social media,m Instagram, Facebook, etc. :(
Knives are a good example too, looking at enwer offerings from WE, ZT, Spyderco etc. these last years, most have weird curves and looks, "couch flipper" features (ceramic ball bearings, carbon fiber inserts, anodized deep carry pocket clips, custom screws and proprietary hardware, etc.) and this is sad to me.
You did good in pointing out the "hipsterisation" () currently ongoing on most brands to Tim, hopefully he'll act consequently and do something on his part.
Your brother putting the ST300 to shame in comparison to the Center Drive and the reasons he gave TIm must have been fun, and I'd have loved to see Tim's face and reaction during the explanation. That big LM tool made of smaller tools that you posted in your Facebook looks amazing! :o
I'm sure te tools were riveted or glued so that no-one decided to take "part of the cake" for himself :D
Tim is indeed a down to earth, sensible person and a pleasure to chat with. :salute:
I also asked him about the warranty and told me the same story 3 years ago, it's good to see he is a man of his word and even more, willing to go further than the company policy for his customers and loyal followers.
Their warrant is top notch.
Thanks for all your effort, pics and work.
I hope you enjoyed it a lot!!! ;)

Few Condors I liked, but that braided wire thing that now seems standard on their handles doesn't do it for me.

Not much more to cover MT wise on day 3.
A quick visit to Nite Ize booth to look at their 2018 MT/Gadget related products.
I was given free samples from Nite Ize to review.
