You post a picture everyday for 30 days (1-30 September) using your mod. It can be the same knife every day just has to be a picture of a modified Swiss Army Knife from that day. If you didn’t use the knife then you just take a picture with the knife in it.

Nice start to the challenge! Those mods are awlsome and the same to the rest in this challenge! Mine feels a lot more humble but that's the beauty of mods. They are suited for the user

Exactly. That is why I was excited for this challenge - to see the creations that work for others. Some simplicity based while others are complex and some are modded strictly for utility while others want a little more flare. I love the beauty of my Syph custom mod, but I also admire the skills of those who know what they want and can mod their own.

Day 1 - feeling a bit worn out after this morning’s early bike ride (nice when there are fewer cars around), but now it’s time get prepping for the BBQ I’m hosting later this afternoon- briquettes in plastic bags (why not paper??) seem to sweat a bit and so need airing in the sun - scissors on the InvesTigator cutting the cords at the top, and for once this one opened as they should, yet frequently seem not to!Nice usage

Both are Yeoman-derivatives, the black one, made by our friend Mags, is the "Examiner" (nicknamed X-man) with a 93mm inline awl, back side Phillips, nail file hook and combo tool opposite the magnifier, the other one is a nameless one from eBay from a Portuguese modder, with reddish orange G10 scales and a chisel in place of the corkscrew.
Some great mods/customs from everyone so far, this will be a very interesting month!

I don’t have too much in the way of modded SAKs but for now I’ll start with my Pioneer X.
Basic silver but I modded the can opener into a longer reach, smaller flat head driver. Also added a Nite Ize Hip Clip.
Not much modification, but it’s not oem stock anymore. Haha

The Green Hornet has two blade layers, with a saw sandwiched in between.
The first blade layer is standard: large blade, small blade, corkscrew (but it is a fluted corkscrew!)
The second blade layer: serrated blade, combo tool, and a filler to replace the corkscrew or phillips because neither one will fit here.
Here, the filler is an awl that cannot be accessed but I don´t care. Every SAK needs a tool that is useless to the owner. Mags tried to fit a hook but that didn´t work (in case you didn´t know, it was Magentus who built this mod for me).
The two blades are of different age, the standard blade has a Victorinox tang stamp, the serrated blade a victorinox.

I’m currently trying to gather parts for a custom build.
Going to turn my MT.O red Pioneer X into a custom. Will add the metal saw/file from a Mountaineer and the inline Phillips driver, to be placed across from the bottle and can openers, placed side by side.
I have the file with my Mountaineer and the inline Phillips driver with my Explorer. I just need a Harvester for the saw back spring ( to be used with the file...) and spacer to be used in the opener/inline Phillips driver layer.
Then I’ll send all off to be torn apart and rebuilt into my red alox custom.

This is the reason I love the Yeoman. The Explorer challenge confirmed that the difference is noticeable for me in pocket but I don’t miss anything in day to day use, especially with my Yeoman having the awl instead of hook.

I don’t have too much in the way of modded SAKs but for now I’ll start with my Pioneer X.
Basic silver but I modded the can opener into a longer reach, smaller flat head driver. Also added a Nite Ize Hip Clip.
Not much modification, but it’s not oem stock anymore. Haha

It adds to the balance of beauty and utility. Plus, what’s not to love about a small ruler.
Sorry for an extra post, I meant to add this to the last one. Can opener is definitely more task-specific, but the combo tool works just fine in it's place. Thanks for the welcome back folks, I'm enjoying the posts and pics!
Agree. The can opener may be easier to use, but for how little I use it, I prefer the combo tool will for decreasing the SAK width.

As a gardener, I like pruning shears and woodsaws, and most of my SAKs have a woodsaw.
Except the smaller ones of course (58mm, 74mm).
The SAK woodsaws are quite small when compared with other pocket saws but they do a nice job nevertheless.
Therefore my Green Hornet sports a woodsaw; it could never be otherwise.

I finally got completely fed up with a holly bush and decided it needed to go. The Farmer X saw helped out a lot, especially considering many of the spaces the bigger saw wouldn’t fit.

Something new arrived today made by our own Max Stone - Yeoman with wood saw. It arrived in time to get some pocket time and use. But first I removed the nice black scales and added a set of Smokey the Bear.
In its short time in my possession, I have used the blade to cut some dog treats, the combo tool to turn back some tabs on a picture frame, scissors to cut a couple coupons, the saw to cut a couple holly branches, and combo tool to open a bottle of beer. I didn’t get pictures of everything, but here are two.

Day 4 BonusNice mod and scales!

September 5 - No pix today but I used the main blade of the ironwood and titanium framed Pioneer to open a package this morning and used the small screwdriver tip on the can opener to tighten a loose phillips screw on a cabinet.

Bonus pic of the day.. The bundle of paracord that gets delivered is always getting tangled up when I try to use it, so for the last couple of years I have been doing this.. Doughnut thing.. Usually I cut it up in 10m pieces but this time I tryed 15m (50 feet) with the blue and then decided to do the full 30m (100 feet) took some time but I will thank my self later.. This way I can use it in a pinch without get it tangled no matter if I'm at home or trying to set a tarp in the forest

Today was combo tool heavy. Used it to pop the covers off the faucet handles in my camper to remove the handles so I could clean under them. It's a passable philips bit in a pinch. Came in handy later to remove a "C" clip holding a wheel on my garden tractor's trailer.Nice usage photos :tu:

The Yeoman came in handy today doing several odd little jobs:
- Used the magnifying glass to check some expiration dates
- Combo tool to pry the back tabs on a picture frame
- awl for removing the tamper seal on a bottle of soap and vitamins
- knife for cutting some dog treats and putting a little spreadable cheese in one

Well this morning got off to a bad start with managing to fall off at traffic lights due to not being to unclip a pedal - not done that for many a year, more embarrassing than injuring! Just finished clearing out the pea patch in the garden, and managed to get some splinters off the pea-sticks! Still, it’s an opportunity to remove said splinters with the magnifier and tweezers - took a bit of digging, but got there in the end - this one was the most well dug in! Before and after shots - bit tricky to do during! :whistle:

I know our Father has had his hand of protection over me. I was helping another tec at a first time visit, 2 story school and we opened the doors to a unit. I remember yelling “RUN” and took off. He went one way and I another. Hundreds came flying out of that unit. We were off that roof in record time. Didn’t know I could run that fast!

Why? Would they imply import tax on this? Or is there an issue due to recent knife attacks?Should have probably had fees... but the carver was only $10 value haha. but it was the fact it had landed in the UK and hadn’t left London after a few days, I thought it might be customs charges or something to do with it having 2 blades (plus what’s been going on with knife crime) then had the idea they may have been processing them individually (which don’t get scans at each depot.) Whereas the other parcel I had was mixed in a cage, which they scan the cage at each depot it passes through and the cage is just linked to 100 diff parcels for example.
TLDR no updates, I started to worry.

The iced coffee I drink used to come with a small tab on the seal which made it easier to remove. Not anymore. Early morning scaler use via ceiling bounce flashlight to get into the bottle for morning caffeine.Nice :like:

I was in the Kruger National Park a couple months ago and it was almost two weeks before we saw rhino. The poaching remains a huge problem difficult to manage due to the huge size of the park. Almost as large as Belgium.

Sheridan - low modes on flashlights are excellent for not disturbing. Too many focus on max brightness, while lower modes are also really nice for many uses and save battery power too.

Good luck on finding the Saranac. Unfortunately, it is hard to get your hands on, even in most parts of the US. For me, most of the Saranac beers are favorites plus having grown up near the brewery it also has the nostalgia factor. I take advantage whenever I go visit family.

Good luck on finding the Saranac. Unfortunately, it is hard to get your hands on, even in most parts of the US. For me, most of the Saranac beers are favorites plus having grown up near the brewery it also has the nostalgia factor. I take advantage whenever I go visit family.Nice. :like:

Smokey and I had a busy day. I don’t even remember everything I used Smokey for, but it did seem like I was constantly taking it out of my pocket to do something. I think one of the best uses today was helping me to answer my 7yo nephew’s question - “Why do you have a knife in your pocket?”. This was asked as I was puliing Smokey out to open up his package of crackers. I explained at that point the knife had already been used several times since I arrived a couple hours ago on things that I wasn’t planning on doing but I used the knife or other tools to do.
All you get for pictures is a picture after cutting a piece of my pocket duck tape to tape up a sign and an outdoor shot while walking the dog.

Max - thar camp looks fun, though those scorpions look a bit worrying - when I lived in Tashkent back in the 1990s my cellar was full of scorpions, and we had each leg of the bed standing in a tin with a couple of inches of oil in them to trap any that fancied joining you whilst asleep! Quite often found some in the traps, but one night I heard some scampering around on the wooden floor, switched on the torch and found 2 mice scampering around catching scorpions and eating them by biting the sting off and then consuming the scorpions tail first. Never set a mouse trap!

Well, if there's one thing this challenge has shown me so far it's that other folks lead far more exciting lives than I do! :D Tracking my usage has shown mostly mundane tasks but I guess that's where you really find out what you need and use on a regular basis and what's carried as a "what if"... We made fresh salsa today with tomatos, green pepper, jalapenos, garlic, cilantro and onion. Salt was the only ingredient that wasn't grown in our garden. SAK blade was put to use in veggie prep, scissors used to clip tomatos and peppers off the plants.Home grown! That is great! :tu: :cheers:

Tim-man was used several times, including cutting some parchment paper for under the old cake topper, removing some staples, opening various packages, etc. It was even used to cut a helium balloon for my niece to inhale the helium.

Oh and slicing a lemon for G+T to help numb the pain.

Today Timman was used today to cut some string and duct tape to remove a piece of wiring from a gate. I also used it to cut plastics rings from 6-pack.

September 17 - Not a lot of new tasks for the modified Pioneer but I used it yesterday evening to open some packages from Amazon. Also cut up some pool noodles for the wife to use in her crafts.

Today Timman was used today to cut some string and duct tape to remove a piece of wiring from a gate. I also used it to cut plastics rings from 6-pack.

These past four weeks I have been trimming weeds and I used my SAK´s main blade to cut the trimming wire, and, occasionally, the woodsaw to deal with weeds too strong for the trimmer. All power tools at our company are Stihl and I have to say that while they aren´t Swiss, they are very good quality. Atm we´re in transit, moving from gas to electric.
I thought it fitting to feature the Stihl September 2019 calendar girl in this September challenge.

Today, I used the modified Pioneer to cut up an apple and open a food package for a light breakfast this morning. Reading my free VW mag and trying out a new gin, love sipsmith! Usually just go for plain or sloe but found this lemon drizzle.
Realised today that the reason I’ve been feeling so pissed is there are 2 numbers in my gin measure.... been pouring quadruples instead of doubles hahaha good times.

I know I've been MIA from here for a couple days... but I'm back with a couple pics today. We pulled the remainder of our carrots from the garden this morning, and diced them to shrink wrap and freeze for winter use. Used my SAK to cut them up. Made 1000+ cuts over the course of a couple hours. No hotspots or sore points on my hands. I do need to take the blade to my Sharpmaker tomorrow though. Also used the corkscrew to loosen a knot in nylon rope that has been outside, tied tight, since last summer. Worked great! :DGreat uses.

September 25 - Used the modified pioneers small screwdriver on the can opener to fix a closet door latch last night. Today I used it to open a package of food for breakfast.Yeay - now if Mother Nature would summon in the cool weather!
It is quite revealing when you document your daily knife usage for a month. I've been reviewing all of the tasks I used the knife for and have determined that I've had no need for a tactical, fast opening, steel door puncturing, prybar of a knife so far this month. Anyway the titanium scaled, ironwood handled pioneer has served well so far.

I’ve also found that sometimes I experiment with using the SAK to see how well different tools do different tasks, which leads me more to using it more. One example is how well the back edge of the combo tool works for scrapping stickers off prescription bottles.

Got myself some brass shim stock for mods. Thinner than a standard sheet of paper, 2 thousandths of an inch.
Naked Compact scissors cut the wrapping without scratching the brass. Now to make some washers. :salute:

What’s great about these mods is that they’re super-easy to clean as there’s no plastic and nowhere for water to get trapped. I even recon I could stick them in the dishwasher...may just try. Great use. Pizza sounds good, especially homemade. Now that does remind me that this is Thursday which is my most common day of the week for ordering pizza. Might just have to get one.
Here is a bit of irony. I love NY Style pizza. I was recently visiting family in Upstate NY, where despite being NY, most of their pizza is thicker and not NY style. So now that I’m back in Virginia, I can easily get a real good NY style pizza.

September 30 - last day of the modified SAK challenge, in all of the tasks I used the titanium scaled, ironwood handled pioneer it served me well. The only tool's/accessories that I've really missed were scissors and the toothpick.Nice mods :tu:

The minis are fairly new and are nice because they are just smaller versions which make a nice little snack.Thanks :cheers:

After moving our cupboard a bit, the door hinges got ever so slightly misaligned, the Examiner came in handy adjusting the screws.
And wow, another 30 day challenge just flew by, it's almost like we started last week. Congrats to everyone who completed the 30 days, and a special :hatsoff: to Max Stone for his very nice mods made during the challenge!

We’re finally here! Time for Rizio to crack open a special one.... he’s been saving this for the celebration!

I was a little surprised when all our shop had was it in cans, but it is the only place I’ve ever seen it.

It is strange how, at least in the US, only cheap beer came in cans. Now many craft breweries can beers because their allowed in more places than glass.

Old Engine Oil is my favorite beer above all!
