Title: Huntsman owners club
Post by: magentus on March 07, 2013, 01:17:51 PM
Lets hear it for the oft overlooked Huntsman - probably everyone here has one, but that's the beauty of it. Great toolset that  means business.

I've EDC'd mine for many years now, and although I occasionally think about replacing it with my Farmer, SI or Recruit, I never have.

Huntsman we salute you!  :salute:

Aaaah the Huntsman  ;)  :D

I really love my trusty Huntman mod with long nail file instead of the hook.

My first SAK was a Huntsman... but sadly I lost it after a couple of years.

But I can still be a member of this club:

I'm in. No pics yet as I'm new in the SAK pron industry we all enjoy here. Got two Huntsman, an older, full tang 'n' nylon scales and a newer one with pin that also sings (it was discussed in another thread http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,42295.msg677514.html#msg677514 ). I'll manage to get some pics for your entertainment, people, but it should be done in nice weather and with my better half out of the way. She wouldn't cope with that too... :climber:

That's exactly the situation here!

I have a couple, but one is in the kitchen drawer as back up for all the other things which do those jobs. I think there's one in the caravan too, for much the same reason.

It's a workhorse choice I guess - not the prettiest or the most interesting but reliable and useful. The Telecaster of penknives!

Here's my Hardwood Huntsman. I wanted a Bubinga one but missed it. More recently I tried two new Nut Noce and Beli ones from Italy and I did not like how they were made so returned to my old lowly Hardwood.

The Huntsman ... my first and most carried SAK, still carry it every day at work and use it every lunchbreak to peel my daily apple ;).

But strange enough, I have tons of pics from all my SAK's, but only a few from my Huntsman .

Here are the most recent ones, I used it next to my new Wenger Evowood 17.

Nice pics by the way everybody.  :salute:

Nothing wrong with either the Huntsman, the Fieldmaster OR the Telecaster - I played a Tele for years and couldn't fault it - brilliant it of kit. Same as the Huntsman. Just too ubiquitous for most people to notice it when you're looking at fancier stuff - Les Pauls, Strats, Flying V's, Swisschamps, CT41's, Alox mods etc.

The Huntsman doesn't see that much use, but it usually comes along on hikes that are expected to last more than a few hours :)
Otherwise, it's kept in the car with some camping/emergency stuff, like a Jerven Fjellduk, firesteel and -newly- a BK-17 (the SAK fits nicely in the pocket on the sheath of the Becker).

Beauties!  Love both Indian Rosewood scales, and the funky flag.

My last one was for old-timers, but this new one is something the younger whipper-snappers might appreciate; although they might wonder what's up with that background... I just wanted to keep you mellow.

It's not going to beat any of the previous ones posted, but this overpriced Huntsman does represent a lot of history.  It's a natural for the Hudson's Bay Company to have a Victorinox SAK represent their heritage.

I should have picked up one of these when I had the chance. One of those MEC Climbers, too.

Is the saw made out of Clear Aluminum? Is this Star Trek 4?

Just kidding. It took me actual years (like, 10 of them) to figure out if my first Economy Recruit was a Victorinox or a Wenger. Stupid Economy Vic logo.

I think that part of the problem I had was that I have a mild brain injury and just forgot about it. I bought it in the early 90s.

Clear aluminum?¿?

My pre 89 huntsman is a great fishing buddy.  On a neck lanyard, the scizzors cut line for a few hours today.  And the saw was used to cut jagged dangerous branches on a path.

Unfortuantely, the main blade was not used to clean trout.

Never used the saw and it feels a bit too heavy for my pocket, but for 3 Euros, I couldn't pass it up...

I've owned and used a few Huntsman in my life, it was my favorite for a long time. Most are gone now, I gave them away. The Huntsman is an unspecialized, all round model for everyone, and is one of Victorinox' best selling SAKs.

I ordered a new Huntsman yesterday, the Desert Camo version. And I have a few more. Pics tomorrow, I guess.

Some really nice Huntsmen on this thread, such a variety.  Pretty partial to the Huntsman myself, a few older ones.

1st is a 84mm small Huntsman from the mid 40's to early 50's.  Opening all of the blades on this one is not for the faint hearted.....got away with only one Band-Aid. 😛

2nd top is LNF version from the 60's, bottom is LNF from the 70's.

I don't pay much tribute to the Huntsman, but truthfully I still use mine almost daily. It sits in the kitchen "junk drawer", but it's my go-to can opener and I use the scissors on it more than any other scissors. I put it on the Lansky system today and brought it back to paper slicing sharp

For me, the Huntsman is the Iconic Swiss Army Knife.

It may be that other SAK's are more popular (Classic) or more historic (Soldier), but the Huntsman with it's collection of classic SAK tools (scissors, saw, corkscrew) becomes the iconic SAK. And for good reason, what a great knife.....

This is a NIB Huntsman, dated around 1980-1990. At first glance the Corscrew has no groove, but if you take a very close look, you'll see a rudimentary groove. I guess this on past quality control unseen. Or maybe they didn't find it a problem.

That sure is a beauty!  My '83 has the groove just like yours.  I'm no expert, but I'd say yours is a pre-1986 from the groove.  The main blade should have VICTORINOX all in one font too. Love that box!!

Jim,

The Silvertech scales are really nice, no doubt. Now, I hate to have to be the one to break this to you, but you will need to get another Huntsman with darker scales. You see, that Silvertech Huntsman would just be too easy to lose in all this snow.....

No snow here...it's been almost 30 years since I have been to see the snow. :)

This is my 3rd SilverTech.  I had forgotten about my SilverTech Explorer and I had recently purchased a new SilverTech Spartan from Amazon.

I had looked at a few Huntsman, including this morning when I spotted a BSA Huntsman but it was in so-so condition.

The Huntsman (small 84mm) is the most expensive SAK I've ever purchased.  I had to pay dearly since it was mint in box.

I like using waxed jute for tinder. You might be able to put a short strand of waxed jute under the saw. You don't need much to get a fire going.

Or....you could put a thick strand (doubled-up strand) inside the corkscrew.

Post by: TazzieRob on September 14, 2018, 05:50:48 AM
The Huntsman was my first real SAK. I bought it in the mid to late 90s after I lost my first pocket knife, I think a Japanese copy my Great Grandparents bought me for my 6th birthday. I remember it had a fish scaler and the scales were darker red I'm sure. I was quite upset that I'd lost it but I really can't remember it clearly enough now. Up until I started work in 2006 and got a LM Juice the Huntsman had been my only multi tool. It has been abused a fir bit and the blade layer doesn't have a very sound snap any more. I had to replace the scissors spring as I liked to play, flicking them open and listen to the springy noise until it snapped  I still have the box it came in, a maroon colour, not the silver like they are now.
I bought the blue Huntsman off eBay a few years ago. I actually bid on a Climber, I think the intention I had was to modify the scissors into a Cadet, but I was pleasantly surprised when my Climber came with an added wood saw :tu:. The seller had mislabelled his pre-packed item :dunno:. It is also brand new :woohoo:. I can see all the factory grind marks and the saw still has the fuzzies left from the grinding process, never been used. So I decided it wasn't worth tearing down and have left it as is. While I've now bought other SAKs and multis, the Huntsman will always be the one I like the most  :salute:

This is sad:
Today I learned that I don't actually have a 'real'(for lack of a better word) Huntsman (a member brought up the BoyScout Huntsman). I have a 2003 NIB BoyScout Huntsman(backside phillips). I now need to buy a regular Huntsman (with the corky screw). :climber:

Now...which scales do I want?... :D

Thanks, TonySal. Camo sounds good. I do like my Spartan in camo. A camo Huntsman is now on the "to get list"(technically it will be a red scaled Huntsman and a set of camo scales popped on to save money).:iagree:

It's always nice to come up with reasons to buy more SAKs. :)

Love the Huntsman!

This was my first pocket knife given to me by my grandfather when I was around 7 years old. Such a great combination of tools and it saw a lot of carry and use. From what I have gathered (and I am still not sure) this one was made around 94 which is when I turned 7. Correct me if I’m wrong. Just recently added the micro SD but the scales don’t have a hole for the pin.

Any first impressions, Speedy?
I like the tools that the Huntsman has
It feels good in the hand and not to heavy
The camouflage scales have a good finish
All I need to do now is start using it  :tu:

The Huntsman (or Fieldmaster) is about as big a SAK as I like to carry for EDC or routine uses. Four layers seem to be my max, with 2-layers being the 'sweet spot' for me. 3-layer SAKs like the Farmer or PX are great, but those 2-layer SAKs are just so nice to carry.

Still, for a nice selection of tools and easy pocket carry, the Huntsman or Fieldmaster is hard to beat.

Man, that's one lovely Huntsman right there...  :like:
Lovely old solid scales, with that lovely deeper red shade...

About not having the hole for the pin, let me tell you...  i love the pin, use it a lot, but i would give it up in a second of they had still made and use those older solid cellidor scales, instead of this newer hallow cheaper ones...  :twak:

I haven't posted in about half a decade, but here's my "new" 1986-88 Huntsman, with grooved corkscrew and no hook. I like the hook, but for some reason the older corkscrew makes me feel sophisticated and old-timey.

Also, in hi-viz lime green, is Vicky. (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,46255.0.html) She's been coming to work lately, though since work is a school instead of a construction site, she has little to fear.

Six Huntsman
I would like any other cammo scales. Then I would like
to match each one with a Spartan of the same scale.

Blade, saw, scissors, awl. Openers & driver.
That's everything I need about town.

The Huntsman is my favorite SAK and my EDC. My yellow cellidor Huntsman has traveled far and wide with me.

Here is a small portion of my Huntsman collection...I chose some of the more interesting ones.

I have quite a few more. I would say it is the one model of which I have the most iterations. I am working on getting as many different scaled Huntsman models as possible.

Spudley, those are gorgeous! Did you make the ones that are a mixture of cellidor (or is it something else) and wood? Seems like it would be challenging.

The camo and the yellow are production. The ebony one was some ebony wood blocks that I ordered and shaped. The other wood is from a discarded oak coffee table. The mixed scales are oak, with a polymer insert made from the faux ivory dominoes you can buy at almost any store. I cut a rectangle piece of wood, then divide it about 2/3 the way down at an angle, epoxy a domino in between. I work it down on my belt sander and shape it into a set of scales.

Cheesy, but it seems to turn out ok.

It doesn't take long to get in the groove. I had an old SAK with no scales that I had disassembled and found that the metal sides make a great tool for making scales. The outline helps you shape the scales, plus the rivet holes show you exactly where to relieve material to accomodate the rivets on a SAK.

That’s an awesome idea to take one apart for that purpose. Time to find a broken one to take apart.  :)

Victorinox Huntsman
(https://i.imgur.com/p71Nbvy.png)

Added a black-scaled Huntsman today. Never difficult to understand why this model is the favourite of so many! The equivalent of about $45 in sheqels, plus Israeli VAT. I am a few minutes away from 5 or 6 stores that sell Victorinox pocket knives, and multitools. Very dangerous for a penurious pensioner.

Translucent blue is most attractive, though my terrible photo doesn't bring that out. Or the matching blue of the lanyard.

Anyone ever heard of an Alox-scaled Huntsman?

Ah, a bit like a Farmer and a Pioneer X combined, and with a pen blade. My guess is that a production model would sell. Put in a combo tool, take out the superfluous opener, and add an inline awl. A step closer to perfection. No hook or pick or tick-grabber. I could live with that.

I gave that particular knife to my son many years ago, but its identical twin lives on the table beside my chair, ever ready to tackle whatever tasks come my way.

I bought the 2018 Chinese zodiac year of the dog Huntsman for my son because that's his birth year. When he is old enough I plan on giving him that knife and a puppy of his own because dogs and SAK's are man's best friend!

I just found some more "store display" SAKs with extra stops and unsharpened tools. I think one of them is a Huntsman-with-chisel :)

They just arrived. Only one of the three has the chisel, and that one is actually in pretty good shape.

The other two are a bit meh. One of them does not feature the extra stops and it's also very dirty.
Interestingly, the bottle openers have (almost) no bevel

Pics later :)

Pics! Not really good ones, but still :P

This one is pretty good. It has the chisel which is quite cool. I remember seeing this unusual model in France and Germany in the 1990s. I even asked the staff to search for one in their stock but somehow that was always unsuccessful :P It was purely meant to be a store display knife.
Like I said before: unsharpened blades, extra stops on most of the tools in order to display the SAK in the position shown, weaker springs. They were always welded onto a stainless steel post with a wooden or plastic base.

A blob of weld still visible on the bottle opener. The steel post used to be attached there.

Second one, no chisel. Bottle opener with no obvious bevel. This one also has the extra stops on several tools.

Half of the bottle opener has been ground off

Third one: unsharpened tools but no extra stops
Opener without bevel. It even hits the can opener in closed position!

And finally the one I bought years ago. This one is in perfect condition and it even has the post + base:

Got the  :mail: today and a new addition to the collection showed up.  '92 -'05 Huntsman as best I can tell.  Considering the Olympic emblem and it's a post '92 model, I was thinking maybe this was a run for the 100 year anniversary of the modern Olympics (1996) but I can't find anything specific on this particular Huntsman.   It's in great shape though so I'm stoked!   If anybody might know if this had it's own model number I'd greatly appreciate any info you could shoot my way.

I always have an eye out for older Huntsman and Woodsman (70’s and older) and up until yesterday they seemed to follow a pattern.  The Huntsman would have T&T and a long nail file and the Woodsman would have neither.  This yesterday, a 60’s Huntsman with T&T but no long nail file (shown with a 60’s long nail file version).  Guess there are no absolutes with SAKs.......ever!!!!!  😛

I like them too Tony but perhaps not quite as much as the firefly which being longer is that little bit easier to use IMO. The tinder is really good and lights from the fireant easily, making for a very good package

For day to day EDC I’m happier sacrificing the toothpick over the mini driver so take a firefly with mini driver and the tinder.

Been taking both fireant and firefly on my huntsman when bush walking for a handy backup that weighs virtually zero

:iagree: I love the Huntsman for many reasons and seems to have the right tools for the outdoors.  No more, no less.

The closest competitor being the Farmer X with an improved placement of the awl/reamer.

I have plenty of Spartans and Climbers.  I’m looking for a few more Huntsman to square things.

Are you able to tell the year based on the translucent scales.  My silver one has 16 among other numbers stamped on it and i interpreted it to mean the scales at least are from 2016.

Most translucent type scales are pretty easy to read the date on a ‘wheel’ with a pointer. Some of the early ones ‘99+ are harder to read as the wheels aren’t fully marked and with only single digits like 4 and 6. So you have to ‘know’ what decade it’s from to be useful.

First time visiting the huntsman club ...

This morning I fitted some black micarta scales - custom made by a UK seller on Etsy. I have micarta on some other knives I own and really wanted to try them on a SAK. Decided on the huntsman since I completed the Pioneer X challenge last month and although I really like my PX it did make me miss the wood saw. So - for now at least - the huntsman it is. I’m liking this black-out version so far...

I typically carry something large, like a Ranger, Handyman or SwissChamp, with a Cybertool Lite for when I'll be building PCs.

So the question today is - Should I travel light, or should I travel Lite?

Funny. Well if you are not out at night or looking behind the couch I don't think the Lite would be necessary but that's just me....

Funnily enough... I do both every evening. I walk the dogs, and I retrieve my toddlers' lost toys.
But necessity is secondary to 'I just want one'.

I'm not sure it was worth the $10 premium over the non branded one, but what the heck. It was gift card money!

That's correct. The black thing is just a piece of heat shrink tube. It's there to protect the tinder. Something I picked up from a Felix Immler video on Youtube. Seems to work surprisingly well.

Yes! Just ordered a new one. Did a challenge a while ago with a gifted one so I wanted to put that one in my SAK home and get a new one. Forgot about the wood!
I'm a Red SAK guy but the wood ones are beautiful !  :salute:

It's about time I joined this club!

Here's mine. It's a 90s era model I picked up off eBay for a reasonable price.

Unfortunately, the corkscrew is a little bent which kind of bothers me. But I like this model and tool set enough I'm seriously considering buying a brand new one.

The only walnut scale I have in my SAKs........this Huntsman sits in my foraging pack so has regular use whether it is the knife or scissor to liberate a foraged fruit or the hook to carry bundles of nettles. The scales are regularly beeswaxed to maintain the beautiful detail of the walnut....... :)

I love the black! Once my red scales need replacing, I will go with black. I'd carry a Hunstman every day but as a teacher, I don't have a use for the saw at work so I end up with a Climber or Super Tinker on my pocket instead. A Huntsman goes in my pocket on the weekends especially during the fall.

It's a used one i got dirt cheap, that was after a nice bath and scrub and new scales pressed in.
But it's still very much pretty, i don't carry it much, only for outdoors stuff now and again

I guess I accidentally posted the photo from yesterday that I didn't mean to along with the winter deer photo.  Turkeys and deer browsing peacefully together from yesterday.  Hard to see, I know.  I had to resize it so much that it lost definition.  There is some leftover macaroni in the foreground.  Left that for the night vermin.  Got a night photo of a pasta slurping  possum.
Here is a red Huntsman.  Best wishes.  G

You know, Tony, I carried a 108mm for decades.  Occasionally I would carry a Tinker.  I had some 58mm, but never really carried them.  I am only now carrying some of the other 91mm knives.  Huntsman is one of my favorites.  It doesn't seem bulky at all to me.  I carried a Huntsman most of the day and a Spartan for a while too.  Got to have some fun, right?  Best wishes.  Gary

Well i have now also one, and i did put it allready on Skale: my Cybertool L (Rucksack EDC) is about 180 gramms (on an 160 kg max plattform Skale) whyle the Huntsmann inkluding the Missing Tools Victorinox did not get me (small Screwdriver in the Korkscrew and Needle) is now 100 gramms ..

Its a nice small 91 mm SAK sadly not on Blue but in Black which is also cool ..

But i found one thing interessting: Could it be that back in the 90tes or 80tes, the Medium Size Victorinox where shorter than they are now? I have compare the Huntsman whit an 2 Layer whe have lying around in our bathroom (Spartan?) and its maybe a cm shorter ..

So, the Huntsman is 91 mm.  Sounds like your old “Spartan” is actually a Tourist, which has the identical tool set to the Spartan but is 84 mm long vs. the 91 mm Huntsman and Spartan.

I found that the 84mm like the Tourist carried much better than a 91mm.  And did the same thing.  Doesn't look like much difference, but it sure feels different.  I had a couple of Recruits and they were almost the perfect carry SAK.  No back tools.  Smooth and light.  I might start carrying a Bantam for a while and see how that goes.
I didn't recall posting to the Huntsman Club site, but evidently I did.  Might need to post a Huntsman photo.  Best wishes.  G

Ah interessting, thanks for the Answer, i dont know who from my familiy did bough this knive back then, its lost its keyring holder sadly but still opens fine even though it was lying in the Drawer on this quite humit envroiment in the bathroom, it where a bit too small for my EDC but i can get it to my SAK Collection Board ..

Im still wonder why my Huntsman dont have the small glasses Screwdriver and the Needle, so i did borrow them from my other SAK..
