Thanks. Not only are those Knifecoop mods beautiful, that knife feels wonderful in the hand. The heft of the nickel silver liners and the swell of the scales feels just right . I can only bring myself to carry that one on special occasions, but once it's in my pocket I want to EDC it.

They're fairly rare from what I've experienced. I got that one from felinevet, and I'm sure he sees one from time to time.
I prefer the ribbed to the checkered Cadets, and the triangular shield also. The checkered ones have more grip, but the ribbed have a more "elegant" look and feel.

Nice collection mate  , I need more alox , mind you that stag hunter, is just beautiful :), not to mention the customs, the...

Nice collection mate :), yep blue alox is PAINFULLY gorgeous, if you can nab a blue farmer, get one, even if it costs you a kidney :D
-
It's top of the wish list, but not this side of Christmas. Plus I'll need two, a user and a drawer queen. And then copper, black and whatever other colours Alox comes in - I'm sure I've seen green before now ???
It might be easier to just tithe 10% of my income to Victorinox and 20% to Felinevet :gimme:

Thanks--I enjoy them nearly as much as I do flashlights. :P
The Hunter, unfortunately, is faux stag (plastic). The Oldschool Soldier is true stag.

That soldier is lovely. Infact that would probably be my dream SAK as I not only EDC the soldier (well acually the SI) and love the tool selection, but I like bone/horn scales as well.
If you are ever silly enough to feel the urge to sell it (you would have to be BLOODY silly!!!) please do give me a shout. ;)
-
I doubt I'll ever sell that one. I can get you a new one from Knifecoop if you really want one.
That's the most expensive SAK I own, but I think the regular bone ones are probably quite a bit cheaper.
Take a look around here: http://www.knifecooperative.com/ I could help with shipping if that becomes a problem.

Hmmmm birthday in in a few months.... >:D

You can also check out some of the scale kits in Rotokid's Shop (http://rotokid.sosakonline.com/index.php?option=com_phpshop&page=shop.browse&category_id=315f5a85fa29d92bc994367f02205b00&option=com_phpshop&Itemid=1) for some really cool and inexpensive customized SAKs!
A few bucks and a little elbow grease and you could have a really sweet knife!

Way ahead of you. Although I couldn't do the work myself as I am not very good in that department, but I have had a word with Tom who may be able to help me out when he has a spare slot.

It's actually not all that difficult. A couple of hours with some sand paper is pretty well all you need to crank out a beautiful looking knife.
Hell, even I managed it!

I just don't have the patience or the space to do it. I always have kids jumping on me. :)
I do like the idea though. I just like things to be different and unique.

A bloody chance would be a fine thing nowadays! ::) Damn kids keep waking up and interrupting.
Back on the topic of SAK's, Tim has a lovely one that I have been eyeballing for a long time and have come very close to buying a few times now. It is the marbled one. But what puts me off is how it is probably quite rare so I would be afraid to actually use it. It is lovely though.
-
I have the same problem, except for me it's my wife walking in and interrupting....
I have been experimenting with soapstone scales. I haven't worked on them for a while but they do look very similar to marble. Unfortunately they are also very fragile and wouldn't make much of an EDC.

LOL :D Didn't get that the first time I read it!
Thats why a like bone scales (not that I have any) as they look bloody nice and must be pretty tough as well. They must feel nice in the hand as well I expect.

So tell us about brass liners. Do they still use brass at all? When did they switch to aluminum? ???

I love brass liners!!
So tell us about brass liners. Do they still use brass at all? When did they switch to aluminum? ???
The brass liners are an odd thing. In the Pioneer range, there were aluminum liners that predated the brass ones, and, of course, aluminum liners since. I have three "silver cross" red Farmers and one Electrician that have the brass liners, and I have Soldiers and Pioneers that I know predate them that have aluminum liners. All of the brass-lined ALOX models I own have the unpolished tools, which I greatly prefer. Those unpolished tools should date them no later than the mid eighties, but I don't have any idea how early they may be.
The brass liners give the knife a nice smooth action, due to the self-lubricating nature of brass. I think they look cool too!
-
They certainly smarten a SAK up.

Just thought I would give the new camera a quick go while the kids were quiet. There are a lot of features I need to look into so I could probably improve the pictures quite a bit, but here is the first attempt.

It's a '66 SI. Even though it's a few years old now, it still openes really smoothly and the snap is like new.

I only have a farmer myself. However the OHT seems to be an interesting thing that calls to me.
I would also love to get a mauser!!
-
Farmers and Ramblers rule.
My stayglow Rambler never leaves my pocket.
-
Besides my old Soldier. I really never got into the SAK movement. It seems that the older one really did everything I ever needed so I just stopped looking. Kinda like my Surefire G2 is the perfect light for me so why spend time really looking for others. I still want the Monarch light, but I think mostly because it is a Leatherman.
Now that I have the Farmer I really dont need another sak but would love to have a second blade put on a Blue farmer. Maybe its time to have a custom built!

Nice collection there mate :), do they see a lot of use, or are you more a MT man these days ???
Cheers bud, yeah I'm more of a MT man now. I used to 'collect' a few SAK's then moved onto MT's where I am now. Its not my whole collection above but those are the better ones I have. The Cybertool sees quite a bit of use. Its not taken to work but is used around the house a bit and taken out when I will probably need a screwdriver. I still respect SAK's a lot and Victorinox still remain my favourite tool company, but I tend to like having pliers with me now.

I'm the same :(, I love my sak's dearly, but I just seem to carry MT's almost exclussively now ::), the only time I don't is if I'm going somewhere knife sensitive, like picking my boy up from school, then I get to carry my Farmer again :D

Hehe, the good ol' farmer. Stop going on about them, you'll make me want one soon ;) Have you given your boy a multitool yet, is he old enough to have one, or admire your collection yet?

Question about your SI. Does your hollow rivet taper in before going hollow or is yours just flat?

Don't you love the unpolished tools on that '75 SI? In use, I find them noticably more effective than the polished ones.

I love the artie, crossed blades mate :)

I've been thinking the same thing, i much prefer the unpolished looks it just seems much more workman like.

Ta :) Although I do seem to have lost the creative spree i was on a few weeks ago though. My photo's are not turning out as well as they used to :( Ah well it was good while it lasted!

My rivet tapers in just around the head and then hollows out. Apart from that it looks identical. They really are great SAK's. :)

Yup thats what i was expecting! I will say though that my SI looks to have had a lot of use, the alox has started to either discolour, or the plating is coming off (not sure how the alox is done) But all the tools snap open and close pretty damn smoothly. I'm very impressed for a tool thats over 30yrs old!

They lokk great, and beautifully convexed too, I bet its a great user mate :)
-
It has taken a bit to get used to sharpening it,but it sure does cut like a knife half as thick.I like it quite a bit.To me i have the stoutness of a large knife, yet because of the grind I have a knife that cuts like an SAK at the same time.

Yep convex is an awesome grind, isn't it :)
-
Yeppers on that.It seems like a person can have the best of both worlds.A thicker blade for strength, but a fine edge for cutting. How does a conves hold up on a Flat out Chopper.
Dtrain
-
I think I remember reading that a convex grind is good for chopping because the initial edge makes the cut, then the thickness of the blade acts as a wedge. That way the edge ends up not coming in contact with anything after the initial cut.

Three layer ALOX models are the best. Even if you don't use the wood saw, it's nice just to have the added thickness as it's much more comfortable in the hand.

That's what I found with my SI (which I gave to my Dad ::)) the extra layer really makes it much more hand filling, without seeming overwide :)
-
When I got my first 3 layer ALOX model, which I think was the Electrician Plus, I immediately placed an order with Felinevet for the others... they are that much better! It wasn't a simple matter of "gee, these are pretty neat, I should remember to maybe order another one next time I get something." It was more like I was so frenzied I could barely dial the phone and begged Tim for at least one of each! :D

You've got to wonder why Vic hasn't made more 3 layer models, and also why Wenger just does the SI ???
-
Wenger claims they don't do it because Victorinox is doing it. Of course, they won't be doing it for much longer. When the new Swiss Military knife is decided on I imagine Wenger will drop the SI.
Victorinox doesn't make any more three layer models because it would require a redesign of more tools to fit on a 93mm frame and that's just too inconvenient. Besides, ALOX mods are still pretty new- let SOSAK members get enough of them made up for Victorinox to take note of! :D
Def

Just get them all, that way you haven't got to worry about choosing :D
-
I really like my blue Farmer.. Anyways, is a black Pioneer a rare SAK?
-
Just get them all, that way you haven't got to worry about choosing :D
That's one way of looking at it. :D
I am really smitten on Bill's one. That is gorgeous!
-
The next SAK I buy will definitely be a Abrasive Farmer.
-
Now that is a quality selection of Sak's mate :)
I've seen bigger collection's, but there's not a single duff one there :)
LM123's right, buy a FARMER :pok:
It's happening don't worry! :D
Just got to decide which one.
If I were to have only one, I think right now it would be one of Scibeer's HA models.

I recently got a Vic Farmer, Yay! Its a great SAK one of my favs now. It got me in the mood to do a few pics of some SAKs including my Dads Rescue Tool which I nabbed for a few minutes and some obviously of the Vic Farmer...

This is my Vic Jacket that I mentioned a couple of days ago, and I said I would get some pics up of it, so here they are....
The colour is a bit off on some of them. The true colour is that of the second pic rather than the first.

I love that jacket! :) Very nice mate.
-
Very cool Jacket mate 8), where'd ya get it ???
-
Cheers guys :)
I actually got it from ebay quite a while ago now. It was purchased as Used but only worn a couple of time, and when I got it, it was mint condition which was great. Gave it a quick wash and it was as good as new :)
It seems to be a "Special Edition" but I don't know anything about it, e.g when it was bought or how many were made and for whom etc, perhaps Dunc and his top secret sources at Vic would know 8)

OK no probs Dunc. I know Vic do a jacket with emergency type SOS LED's built into the jacket which might interest a rescue/sea person like yourself. Can't remember where I seen it now, but it was a few hundred quid to buy.

Is the Vic clothing line also made in Switzerland?

You're on a SAK buying spree Gene. I will make a paracord landyard for that new EDC of yours.

I love the look of silver Alox , that Wenger looks just like a Vic to me (I am very SAK illiterate though)
-
It's a Wenger SI mate :), almost the same as a Vic Soldier, except the blades got a bit more belly, the awl's a bit pointier and there's a bail :)
-
Great pics Teoflo :).
Couldn't help but notice that your bail has come out though. Would hate for you to clip it onto something and then lose it.
-
Thanks Ben. If not for this thread (Terry's), I might have lost it! 'got it fixed.

Radical dude! What is the story behind those? :)
Except for the imposter on the right (its not a Snife but came with the card for some strange reason) they are all Wenger's that have had a crazy printed shrink wrapped (almost) design put on them. They were out in the early nineties following on the wave of the mad Swatch watches.

I like those! :)

One thing that I don't like with SAKs sometimes, the scale at the tip deforms thru time and use, thus having a gap in between the metal and the red plastic.

Well some of you have seen my line up. It's ever expanding and I had at least one more come in last week and a few more (used, cheap but beautiful) coming in soon. I'll try and take more pics soon.

That's a pet hate of mine aswell. Its not too bad on more modern SAKs, you can just replace the scales but I've got some with the old eco inlaid sheild and with bails. Not much you can do then :(

They're not as robust but in day to day use I find the new style much more useful.

Well, I consider the Victorinox Golf Tool a smurf tool since it in no way resembles anything they have made before. I knew someone would ask about that! I don't want one. ;)

Dunc, what is the story with that signed SwissTool? What model is it, where can I get my hands on one, etc.

Dunc, what is the story with that signed SwissTool? What model is it, where can I get my hands on one, etc.
This particular model was a gift from Def and some other menbers on here , I think Bob ( J-sews ) and Tim ( Felinevet) may also have had something to do with it . It carries Charles Elsener signature . He is the Father of Vics current Chairman Carl Elsener . Its an early model ( no hard wire cutters on pliers ) and is my most treasured Multitool . As far as I know they were only on sale in the U.S . The plain blade is numbered and the only other person I know who has one is J-Sews .
Dunc
-
Darren has one as well. But I have never seen another one.

Yep your quite right , I forgot about his one ::)

Thanks for the information Dunc. It certainly sounds like I shouldn't get my hopes up about getting one then.

That's pure speculation on your part Duncan my boy. You'll never be able to prove a word of it. :D

OK this is all I have for swiss stuff.
Top is my farmer. Love the thing! Second is my old recruit. I had this for about 20 years. Third is the Sportsman 2 in eco scale. It is allways with me on my keys. and third is the Wenger Ranger 51 that I got from Grant up in Maine. I really love this one the most but it does have one major issue with it. However I will show it when I post a review of it. It will be done after Christmas.

This a now very out of date shot of my SAKs but it's the only group pic I have. I have to wrestle the camera from my wife sometime soon.

-
You're right and I still don't have one. I might have to ask Santa.
-
M current edc sak, tourist.
-
After getting my wife to give up the camera I got this shot. I think one or two are missing but you get the idea.
-
What year's your old one? Just nosey :)
Neil
-
No problem. It is a 1946 Wenger. As you can see it has had better days.
-
I wonder what happened to that blade. Almost looks molten.
Neil
-
It's been very deeply eaten away by something that's for sure. Before I got it someone did a good job of cleaning and stabilising the corrosion. My thought had always been a salt-water splash that never got cleaned off, but who knows.
I just realise the problem with that theory though. I bought it from a chap in Switzerland, a country that is completely land locked. ::)
-
Perhaps it was an exceptionally sweet piece of chocolate. :D
-
Acid?
Dtrain
-
Yeah, that's what I'm going with!
-
Lightning strike!
Acid's more likely, but less dramatic. :)
Neil
-
The lesson being; don't cut up lemons with your old SAKs.
-
Still a fine looking Sak though :)
-
Indeed, the scales are in very good order and the tools have character :)
Neil

Here's some just for Micky d :)

Neil

OH MY GOD I WANT... no, I NEED an old farmer! NEED!!!

I want it more!!!!! I was born in 85!!

Ben needs that Farmer! :D

I love the way Neil has nothing to do with this debate. :D

I want it more!!!!! I was born in 85!!
Ben is to young to have a knife! ;)
It still strikes me as odd that I have several friends that i think of as "my age" that were born in the 80's. To be clear they are not "my age" but at least 5 years younger. I've just made myself feel old.

Not quite. One of this knifes little issues is the shrivelled up thing that once was a keyring bit.

Ouch. what happened?

I think that was where it was attached to the mother SAK. It'll probably just fall off in time :P
No idea, I only go the knife yesterday.

My Wenger Mini Grip (blunt nose)

Same closed, but ready for deployment. This is a rare example of my shelf queen. Most of my MTs get used, same with SAKs.

There great tool's aren't they :)
And UK legal :tu:

Yes they are. Mine is blunt nose with serrated main blade, I'm still looking for needle nose version with plain edge, and the bigger brother Swiss Grip (might have one on the way soon).
-
Ye[ I'm trying to snare a Swiss Grip too :)
And that's definetly NOT UK legal :D

If I am looking at the right one, the scales are bone and not wood. There are a few pics of that one here as it happens http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,7218.0.html.
If you meant the one above that, then those are Staglon scales and that is a Safari Hunter. :)

A gift for myself: Vic Handyman
(http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn243/teofiloeugeniopanganiban/DSC00936.jpg)

Very nice. I picked up a Handyman a little while ago for mod fodder. However it's such a nice knife I decided to keep it as it is. :)
-
The Handyman is one of my favorite SAKs! I Wish it had one more layer: a philips driver/magnifying glass...

Nice SAK Gene, lucky you have someone like you to give you great Xmas gift :D :D :D
Haven't had any gift for myself now advance myself all my gifts last October and November. Still negotiating with my budget officer (my wife) for maybe a New Year Gift for myself :D :D :D
-
Would that make it a SwissChamp  Huh
Nope, the SwissChamp has a fish scaler..
-

Nope, the SwissChamp has a fish scaler..
I was thinking about that as well. For all the difference in thickness the scaler makes I would just carry a Swiss Champ if you want the driver/mag layer. I think the one I would like is to loose the pliers form the Swiss Champ. Whitch makes it (I think) a Champion. Now that's a SAK I want to get hold of some time.
-
Right. Actually, I was choosing between the Champ and the Handyman, Since I already have an Explorer, I chose the latter because its lighter and not as thick as the Champ. Compact and perfect for EDC.
-
Very nice SAK, Gene.

I realised that I have a few 84mm SAKs now so I thought a group shot was justified.
Going clockwise starting from top left they are: Lumberjack, Gourmet, Alox Cadet, red eco Waiter, black eco Waiter, red cellidor Waiter (yes I like Waiters*), middle is an Alumnus.
* Not sure that came out right.
-
Cool shot, which are factory and which are home grown? I lose track, your getting quite prolific :)

Great shot mate :)
And at least I can spot at least one saw too :D

A little slimmer than the Farmer you tried to incinerate :D
-
It's an 84mm (like the Cadet) so it's very pocketable.. I recently traded mine away, and I miss it terribly!
-
OK here are mine. starting at the top.
My Wenger Swiss Grip. Thanks guys I love it!
Vic Mini Champ. BHC ownes this one but It stays in my drawer. Bison 56
Wenger Ranger 51 Thanks Def!
Vic Silver Alox Farmer
Vic Silver Alox Bantam. Mine from Bison
Vic Eco SportsmansII On my key chain. So It gets the most use.
Pink Classic. BHC first Vic!
My Old Recruit. 20 years ald and still going strong.
Vic Key chain I have no clue where it came from.
And my new Tinker.

Hey I got a camera remember. I jsut did this one up, and I got to say the tripod I got really made a good pic!! I finally have a close up clear, and I kept it full size so you can all see what you got me. I really love it and really want to take it out to play but I jsut cant do it. So It sits next to my chair in the living room delegated to just playing with in the home. I really cant bring myself to take it out to cut anything.
-
By the way it is a Wenger ergo 16 SOSAK 2007 knife. I just might get one that is not the KOTY to take out and play. Maybe in Yellow!
-
Here are some of my Nylon scaled knives. I forgot to include my nylon 100mm and 58mm sized knives. :(
(http://lh5.ggpht.com/_gqsDXwvKqE4/SV09o9eYQoI/AAAAAAAACs8/zUPbS1VgnqA/s800/Nylons-1.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/yBw0UMwsfjLOYlEppkuERg?feat=embedwebsite)
From front left clockwise there are the following models; Waiter, Recruit, Black scaled Spartan, Climber, Huntsman, Blue scaled Camper, FieldMaster, and a Tourist.
The black one is advertising Mido, a fine Swiss watch company and the blue one is advertising The Macquarie Group, financial services. When I first saw the blue one I thought it had a Lifesaver on it. :D
-
That lumberjack is kinda neat. How is it for thickness?
It is 1/2" thick and because it hasn't got a corkscrew it sits very neatly in a pocket.
BTW everybody needs a SwissChamp.

I'm told the laser cut is very durable so it'd probably survive a bit of use. I can't say too much though, mine's still in its tin as well :)
Wayne, I thought that was a polo on the blue one, now that would have been cool 8) Though it'd have to be on a dark blue background really ;)

I like the lines of that one. i really got to look into the Tradesman.

I want one of the Wenger Minathors but they're so expensive :(
Neil
-
HC, I bought a Tradesman last night for $25.41! EODtech sent me a message about it.. He also told me that I can get 30$ off Benchmade products, 10% off Chris Reeve knives, and 50% off Rat Cutlery with a copy of my law enforcement ID!!! Too bad I am not a RC fan.. :( But I will be using the Benchmade one for sure.

Here's my latest attempt at zeroing in on my perfect SAK - The Huntsman.
I noticed that it's got a "blemish" - on the back scale, there's an extra emblem kinda embossed on it:
(I'm sure that makes it worth $1,000,000...right?) Either way, not bad for $13 and change...
Here's the Huntsman asking the Farmer if it's OK to go pheasant hunting in his fields... :D

Two damn fine Sak's there mate :tu:
And great shot's too :)
-
Thanks! I really like both of these knives. The Huntsman has replaced my Farmer for EDC at this point (must get scissors into an alox....must get scissors into an alox...)
I'm trying hard to resist scratching through the "ghost logo" area to reveal what's underneath - it really looks like there's an embedded emblem (on the wrong side for some reason) that's been camo'd over. The more wear from being in my pocket, the shinier the edges of it are becoming. The real logo on the front is just a silkscreen-job - not an embedded emblem.
??? ???
-RenHoek
-
Its almost certainly a metal inlaid shield hiding under there. I've found them on other camo SAKs.
Neil
-
I wonder if it can be uncovered with a judicious use of a solvent.
Dtrain
-
Solvent really eats the Celluliod (spelling) and can melt it bad. You will just have to sand it off.
-
I'm planning on just using another knife to lightly scrape off the camo paint from the logo to reveal the shiny logo from within. No 30-grit sanding disks or acid required. :D
Wow! Those camo scales don't wear very well! I've only EDC'd mine a couple days now, and there's already white wear marks starting to show on the end from slipping it in/out of my jeans pocket.
-RenHoek
-
Bummer, but they just applied it as a marketing gimmick. Unfortunatly there was not a lot of thought put into it.

I'm not bummed at all. I didn't get this one for the camo - more as a donor knife for upcoming modding...Also, it was cheap - $13, NIB. In fact to me, having a camo knife is a detriment if you drop it in the woods/grass/etc - especially in the dark.
In the near future, she'll be something besides camo....either stayglow, or maybe the translucent sapphire...I'm tossing around the idea of doing a combo of red & blue scales, and then come up with some clever KU Jayhawks-based name.

Very good point on the camo. i actually feel the same way about BO tools. I am allways worried about losing them.

Got my SOSAK of the year SAK. What a beauty, was very surprised when I so the package not expecting a shipment, and almost forgetting about it.

Well I lost out on that one, but no biggie. I am sure I can find something else to fill the void.

I think I posted these in the wrong place the first time around. My bad. They should be in the right place now.

Got this to add to my 84mm collection. An original Golfer. :D
(http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m37/gareth_hunt/DSCF0430.jpg)
This has to one of my all time great SAKs, The first one I had was very beat up and beyond saving (so it became an Alumnus). This one just needed a bit of cleaning and the edge touched up. I am a very happy chap. :D

I've cheated a bit actually, the scales aren't quite finished yet, and they're definitely not attached.
I just used a bit of artistic licence for the picture, and to make my collection look bigger :D

I promise that I will though, when I finally get them finished. Looks OK so far doesn't it? Especially since I made them from a wooden floor sample :D
I want to hot brand the cross into them, but haven't figured out where to get a cross shaped piece of metal from yet. I'm still weighing up the idea of carving the tweezers and toothpick slots into them. I'd like to do it, but I'm not sure if I'll screw it up.

Looks very good Dave, any chance we get to see a tutorial on scale making???
-
It would be quite a short tutorial donvito, sort of like this:
1) Get some wood
2) Get some sandpaper
3) Get sanding
4) Stick 'em on
:D
I suppose I could do something if it would be of interest to people. I might even be able to video some of it and make a youtube offering?
-
A tutorial with pics and video would be great, I for one would like to see one and get a new skill down. Thx in advance, V.

That's genius! I always thought where the heck do I get good quality wood for handle scales, but never occured to me the local home improvement store have all sorts of high quality hardwood in thickness already close to what I need!

:pok: Tell 'em how you got it Dave. >:D :D

Hehe. I told them I wanted to make sure it was a good match for flooring I already had down, so they let me have a plank as a sample for free :D

Holy heck Neil. The silver ones are gorgeous, I wouldn't feel too over the top at a formal occasion with one of those. The Michel Jordi on the other hand is maybe a bit much even for me. Elton John might like it though. ;)

No idea, wouldn't surprise me though knowing what his watches are like :ahhh

I'm still weighing up the idea of carving the tweezers and toothpick slots into them. I'd like to do it, but I'm not sure if I'll screw it up.
I was wondering if that would be possible too  or would it weaken the scales too much  , might be a bugger too glue as well (glue in groove).

SB 84mm red alox Lumberjack.

The Lumberjack is a great knife. I just wish Rodger wouldn't cover the whole blade with his Logo. I get that he wants people to know it's a Swissbianco limited run, but it's not very subtle. Can't he just use his +B makers mark? :-\

Wenger Sport SAKs

I'm trying to get as many variations of Wenger Sport line as posible while prices are low and they are not as rare.

Ditto, they're pretty bargainous at the moment but it won't last.
Neil

Yep the Wenger Soccer (or Football I should say :P) can be had for bout $10 shipped, some of the others under $20 and maybe $30 max, even the bigger models like the Mountain Bike are sold relatively cheap (relatively to their original retail price, and worth in a few years when the stock runs out). V.

Nice pics there ninjaz :tu:. The "there" copper? soldier/pioneer? sak what's the story behind it, first time I see something like that.
The SAKs are:
Red Farmer, Copper Farmer (2005 VSAKCS club knife), Blue Electrician (2008 VSAKCS club knife).
I don't have many Vic Saks and specially not alox ones.
You can see the VSAKCS knives at: http://www.vsakcs.info/clubknives.php

Yeah I love those scales because they are exactly what I want to show in my collection - the evolution of the Vic SAK.
I got this knife just few days ago as a gift from my mother who saw it in the mall and bought it for me as surprise. It even came in a tin box.
It is Huntsman model and the blade got the new Victorinox stamp (with "Swiss Made") on it.

Thanks for the info mate :tu:
And where can I get a Mum like yours :D

Great another thing to put on the list.

Two layers are; Golfer, Lumberjack, Tinker Small, Tourist, Sportsman, Cadet

Feeling a bit more lonely is my three layer Alumnus
(http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m37/gareth_hunt/DSCF3408.jpg)

Nice 84s Gareth :tu:. Too bad most of the models are out of production :(
-
Wow, that Alumnus has a great compliment of tools on it. Would make a great EDC SAK.
-
TBH it gets less pocket time than it deserves. For starters I did it up myself and just couldn't get the action dialed in right. It feels like the action on a poor Wenger. I'm going to give it another go, perhaps with Alox scales this time. :)
Also at the three layers it feel much more bulky than you might think and doesn't vanish into a pocket like a two layer does. That being the case you are nearly as well carrying a Climber. Again that might be sorted if I put some alox on it.
-
Very nice indeed!

Man those 84mm SAKs are lovely  Great pics Gareth :tu:

Thanks all. :salute:

This post is about SAK collection but STAMPs SAK collection :D
Today I got two insteresting stamps for my stamps collection that I was after for quite some time:
Now I complete my stamps SAK collection (I think there is only 3 SAK on stamps):
And just two more for fun:

Who said there is nothing common between Victorinox Sak Collection to Stamps collection ?
Ninjaz can you put up some pictures of your stamp collection?

Here are some of my Nylon scaled knives.
From front left clockwise there are the following models; Waiter, Recruit, Black scaled Spartan, Climber, Huntsman, Blue scaled Camper, FieldMaster, and a Tourist.
I have a question about the nylon scaled SAKs and their proper names.
I have 2 Economy/nylon scaled Recruits, which are sold in stores here as the Driver model.
Given that the only difference between the regular SAK and the Economy line is the scale material, which is the proper name to use?
I tend to say: "Driver (eco Recruit)" for the ones that I have.
-
I just call them "Eco (X)". Like my Eco Sportsman II.. I think all the Eco versions end with two..

Here is a quote from a letter by Dan Jacquart included with the book "A Collectors Guide to Victorinox 58mm Swiss Army Knives",
"We must admit in many cases it is quite a problem to harmonize the numbers with the names. Some of the original American importers/distributors unfortunately decided to assign different names to some numbers, probably to make it difficult or impossible for the customer to compare the prices. In other countries such as Canada and Great Britain our agents partly assigned other names to make matters even more complicated. Whilst today we would hardly approve of such "behaviour", times were of course different then and we did not follow the markets as closely as today." quote from Mr. Charles Elsener, President of Victorinox regarding the numeral identification system Victorinox uses to identify their models.
I know its a long quote but it really answers these type of questions with bascialy it was due to marketing.
Hope this helps,

This is actually a pic I took for a "Show your lights and knives" thread on CPF.
Not that it's needed, but clockwise from left: Classic SD, Tinker, Blue Alox Classic SD, Driver/Eco Recruit.
The lights are: Fenix E01, Gerber Infinity Ultra, Fenix L0D Q4
Missing from the photo are: Black Climber, another Driver/Eco Recruit, 2008 Alox Vic Soldier, and my wifes' Pink Classic SD.
Also missing (because they are on their way) are: a Silver Alox Bantam II from eodtech, a Red Alox Cadet and a translucent Emerald Rogue from a KF/CPF member.
Until late November 2008, I didn't have any SAKs at all. Now I can't stop buying the bloody things....
Will take another photo when the rest of my herd shows up.
-
 Nice pic Black Rose :D

Nice Black Rose, them SAKs are addictive :D and worth it :tu:
-
Fun isn't it BR? :D I hadn't heard of the Eco Recruit being called the Driver, so thanks for the info. Canada also famously re-named the Lumberjack the Plumber. Canada: a country well know for its....Plumbers? ;)

Yes it is fun :D
There are some others that I have found as well at two national retailers here:
Eco Recruit - Driver
Eco Spartan - Sport
Eco Camper - Scout
Eco Huntsman - Fireman
-
Thanks Black Rose, that's all news to me. :tu: I wounder if those names are only used in Canada or if they are in use elsewhere? Anybody know?

After I saw Sidhartha's Victorinox whistle I had to got get one because I always wanted one (and I had few bucks to spend).
The problem I couldn't find one :( so I just took the best 58mm Vic Sak they had (and I didn't):

Maybe next time I will get whistle one (if I will find one. If I buy it online I will pay more for shipment then the cost of the knife lol)

That's a fine looker there ninjaz. (But I must say that whistle classic of Sidhartha's has rather caught my fancy) :gimme:

I've never seen one in person!

Lol. No - I've got pretty much everything SAK that I need I think. If I see a Silver Farmer going cheap I might get it, and I'd like to get hold of a Cybertool one day too, but that's probably it.

I've seen smooth green alox on other sizes as well and chequered green alox on 93mm models (all I've seen had advertising on them).

Nice line up Dave :tu:
The Cadet needs a saw though :pok: :pok:

Just came up with this one: what you get if you add a saw and awl to a sak? a sak with a sawl... :D
(i'm sooo bored today)

Nice line up Dave :tu:

Better yet, get some scissors on it. :D

Great line up mate. :)
You need an oldie Alox so you can drool (and then tarnish :P ) over the brass liners.

It would be wasted on me mate - I do think the brass looks nice (in fact I'm thinking to make my own), but there's no way I'd use my tool fund to buy one of those unless it was to trade for a MT.
That said, the Cadet and the Farmer are great little knives and I've usually got one or the other with me, but I've got more than enough.

You can never have enough knives/multi-tools as you know already.

Nope - for good! The Farmers are the only SAK I've bought (other than for mod fodder) in the last 20 years or so. I like the Farmer because the thicker blade is more "multi-like". SAks play only a tiny part in my EDC, so I just don't need them, and they don't fascinate me in the way that MTs do.
EDIT: Correction - I bought a Vic Solo too, although I did intend to make wooden scales for it, I elected to do a Forester instead!

Here is my collection as of today:
Except for the twin blade knife in the middle of the front row, which is at least 25 years old, all of the knives have been acquired since late November 2008.

Thats a very nice collection :tu: you have some great pieces there .

Good line-up BR. You need to get a jumbo sized SAK though. Swisschamp or similar.

Agreed :tu:
What make is the little MoP one?
Neil
-
All the SAKs are Vics.
Back row: Rogue, Soldier, Blue Alox Classic SD, Bantam II, Classic SD, Cadet
Middle row: Driver/Eco Recruit, Tinker, Climber (I added the screwdriver to the corkscrew), Driver/Eco Recruit
Front row: SOG Fusion Micron Tanto (big name for such a small knife), no idea who makes it (two bladed) it is marked K-402 and has "stainless steel Japan" stamped on the tang, Spyder Edge Stainless Byrd Finch.
-
I was just curious :) Nice collection :tu:
Neil

Wasn't sure which one you were referring to so I listed them all :D

MoP is Mother of pearl.
You do need a biggun. :pok: :D
-
I'd really like to know who made the two bladed knife. I've done some Googling but nothing shows up.
I just find it interesting that it used Japanese stainless steel for the blades.
I bought it at a hardware store 25+ years ago and used it quite heavily in my teen years.
Then I totally forgot about pocket knives until late last year
-
Haven't been on here much lately but thought I'd pop up a pic of three shabby looking SAK's I had. Now after having a damn good clean, sharpen and some new scales I got from Neil, they are like new!

Very nice mate, I've got to get some white scales sometime.
-
Not strictly a collection as it was a job lot "haul". Some of which I have already sent off here and there, others will be kept, some sold (keep eyes open ;)) and the rest probably sacrificed to the Gods of SAK fodder >:D
Just thought I'd put a pic up which looks like a have a great collection while it was here! :D

Not bad overall - a few that are lost causes!
I actually snagged them off ebay before a listing was removed. I gave the seller my email and we went from there, met up and did a cash deal. Sometimes you can sneak round the system ;)

Sneaky. I like it. :D

People are still listing stuff. it just doesn't stick around for long. My advice (if you can be bothered) is to save searches of the things you're after and the second you get a notification, email the seller with your details and your interest etc ;)

Good tip I'll give it a go. :salute:

I was surprised how nice they are too. I am used to the sapphire one, but again thanks to Neil the Ruby is now in my collection :)

Its when you see shots like yours you understand why they call those scales ruby. They really do have a jewel like quality. Jelly red makes them sound a bit tacky and they're not.

Swiss mountains..
The Vic. arrived from Prime77 today and the Wenger I traded from DaveK at the meet. Can 't say I feel the need to add any more mountain scenery to my collection but its nice to have a couple of examples.
Anyone like to tell me the names of these lumps of rock?
-
The top one is the Matterhorn, not sure about the bottom one... hmm...
-
Not my cup of tea, but interesting pieces. :)

The Wenger is probably from a series they called "Swiss Memories". Basically a souvenir sold showing some of the Swiss Alps. There is an Esquire version too.
(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_gqsDXwvKqE4/SW7c95wJk_I/AAAAAAAACyw/EwGCnJoJ-_o/s800/Matterhorn.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/23UBRyT4tccg8spLF3LjOg?authkey=Gv1sRgCIW4mLHK4MbarwE&feat=embedwebsite)
Of course the Victorinox knife does indeed have the "Matterhorn Peak" but this is only one of several of this type of Switzerland souvenir knife. Here are a couple of photos of some "Austria" souvenir knives made by Victorinox.

The bottom one is the Swiss Memory Saentis. I've been trying to acquire all the knives in that series but am not having a lot of luck...
The series consists of the following knives... I'm not positive of the names, as the list I have is fairly old and I had comprised it from what I could find on the internet.
1. The 905
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v645/665ae/Other%20stuff/SwissMemory905.jpg)
2. The Saentis
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v645/665ae/Other%20stuff/santis2.jpg)
3. The 904
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v645/665ae/Other%20stuff/SwissMemory904.jpg)
4. Santis (I think I've got the wrong name on this one)
5. Lake of Geneva
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v645/665ae/Other%20stuff/SwissMemoryLakeofGeneva.jpg)
6. The Matterhorn that Neil posted a pic of.
I'm not sure how many there were total.

I didn't realise there was so many. I've seen a Vic. one with the Eiffel Tower on it as well that looked quite nice. I'm not in the market for any more of them so if I come across any I'll keep you posted :tu:
Snifes are a different matter, I presently have six different designs and would like the rest. Next on my hit list is the 7th Avenue variant.

I do have a bail to put on it from a junker. Just never got it done yet. :) .
82 is the year I graduated. Now I just need somebody to find me a reasonably priced 64.

Temporarily confined to his hutch for chewing half way through the power lead on the lawnmower!

This is not getting any easier.
It was time to take another family photo.
And the behind the scenes stuff that I normally don't do, but I wanted a photograph that was more or less level. So out came the old Manfrotto that I affectionately call "Tank" along with an extension T bar. I still used my lowly Canon S5IS for these as with most photographs I post on here. The foundation, two TV trays with a black velvet drop cloth as the background. I wanted a little something different from the leather background I have been doing a lot of lately.
But since I went through all the trouble of setting it all up, it was time for a bit of fun. Out came the Pentax K10D with fisheye. Throw in a few Photoshop filters to make it a bit more interesting. And this is what you get. Yeah, I was a bit bored today.

Cool SAKs and a nice tripod.
I want a new head for mine, I've got the 460Mg but it doesn't really suit, problem is I've no idea what would and you try finding a place round here that has a bunch of heads they'll let you play with, not a prayer :-\
-
After years of fiddling with tripod heads...and I have tried many. I found my baby. It is a Manfrotto 115 3D Super Junior Head. That is what you see in the photo above.
The 460Mg has an issue with the knobs. I found them to be not as ergonomic as those on the 115.
-
Chako...are you going to plan to do a pic of them fanned? :P :D
-
No! :D

No! :D

-
Sweet! Great photos. Does it have nickel silver liners or alox?
I think it is nickel silver.
You should be able to tell by the weight since nickel silver is so much heavier, and also by wear or dings or rather lack of dings. Nickel silver is much more durable and therefore for the age will not be nearly as dented on the edges as alox will.

One side is Orange G-10 the other is Stainless Steel. This was a mod (I didn't do) done by a friend of Gadget Guy's that eventually got to me through a trade. Its very well done, the snap is nice, and it rides in the pocket very well. I actually carried it last night to a church function.

Welcome to the forum
Not just me then. The white looks very nice. :tu:
-
Welcome Kart. That is an interesting 111mm you got there. Add me to the list of not seeing a white one before.
I should be getting a white Leica branded second gen SwissCard...but that isn't near as impressive as that 111mm knife. :)
-
Hey Kart, thanks for sharing your great SAKs :tu:
Got any more? :D
-
:) Sorry for my english.
Certainly, I will lay out a bit foto's of my collection yet, although it while very little :)

That one has suffered :-\ It'd make good retro mod material though :D

What model was the white 111mm?

What model was the white 111mm?
Looks like the "Atlas" model.

Now for some of my collection, some non-SAKs, and some transient models going to better homes.
NIB Executive, a three-bladed Old Timer that needs some careful cleaning (it's my most valuable knife, definitely sentimental), a Camillus Demo Knife (92, IIRC), one of three Cow Sportsmen II, a Spyderco Bug (my only Spyderco, in fact XD), one of four Safari Troopers, and a Buck Gent.
Grand Prix, a SwissChamp XLT I paid a bit too much for; it needs new scales to be called in excellent shape to sell :/, and one of two ribbed Cadet IIs.
One of two Green Alox Classic SDs (I also have a Silver Alox one, and a Broker, that I forgot to photograph), a Timekeeper, and a 100-Year Anniversary Climber.
Two of four Battle of ____ knives; I cannot for the life of me remember which is which. XD
(http://i38.tinypic.com/b4tg28.jpg)
The other two.
An Artisan (basically a Fieldmaster Small, seeing as it's 84mm), a very reflective Alox Bantam, my Alox Farmer, and my 20th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing Astronaut.
My Classic SD Shadowbox. I wish the front edges were in better shape, but it's pristine otherwise.
A Silver Mini Bear Jaws, a Victorinox SportRatchet, and a Kershaw A100.
A pair of two-bladed US-made Schrade Old Timers that are flanking a Case Saddlehorn, a vintage-packaged Rally, and a Zwilling J.A. Henckels Genuine Bone knife, of some sort. ^^;
Two of... five(?) Soldiers, a vintage Climber, and a vintage Fieldmaster that needs some badly-needed TLC.

Wow

Actually, the SportRatchet is one of the transient pieces going to a better home, along with the A100; I did have an AutoTool for a matter of days, that also went to a better home. :) Really, I have all the SAKs I want, with the exception of maybe two to ten; I'm wanting to thin my stock so I don't have so many that I don't know what to do with them. ^^;
-
THIN YOUR STOCK :o :o . That be crazy talk :D :D :D :D :D.
Good on you for being sensible , could you teach me :D :D :D :D

Reeeeecolaaaaaaaa!
I have a Ricola knife too. I collect advertising classics and have a very large collection. You have a couple that I do not have. The one in the middle with the round symbol almost looks like the logo for "The Umbrella Corporation" from that movie "Resident Evil".
-
Thank you! :)
I saw you have a Classic with a logo in the form of a hedgehog, but some, whose logo is?

That one I do not know. Looks neat though. I really should try to get some group shots.

Here is that Hedgehog one. If anyone knows the company or what the logo is for give a shoutout! Its a Bijou model and would not stand up so I used a paperclip to steady it.

By the time you have one or two more SAKs you won't be wanting to do any more fanned shots, it just becomes to much of a hassle. And, like you, I can do without wearing to many sticky plasters (band aids). ;)

I found this in an auction and just had to have it! It is somewhat like the new "Pinstripe" scales that just came out and it is like new! The knife itself is a Spartan model.

Here is my Red Coach leather wrapped Classic. It is lightly used but still in great shape.

Have you ever wondered what is under the leather? I got an older well used brown leather Coach Classic where the leather was so worn it was coming off. I stripped it down and found a nylon classic with 2 front scales with hot-stamped shields and the toothpick and tweezers. It kind of looked like it was thrown together out of spare parts.
-
Should have done a gutting picture, there's always room on here for a little SAK gore >:D
Nice that you got the original ring with that one Wayne :tu:

This will have to do. Here is the old one I ripped the worn out leather off and another well used brown leather Coach Classic with some frayed spots to show what happens to these beauties. Too bad they do not hold up very well.

Lovely bit of leather - shame they don't hold up too well. I didn't know there were nylon classics either
Did they produce any larger leather clad SAKs?

I've no box unfortunately but looking at the tools I don't think its ever been used.
Of course now I'm curious as to what scales are under the leather :P

I will have to get one of those sometime in the future.

Is that a Climber, Gene?
Yes, it is, Ed. I used to EDC a Huntsman, but the Climber, minus the saw is lighter and easier to carry.
-
Thanks for the leathery pic Neil... don't go peeking under that scale now :twak:
It looks lovely :D
-
Not the best picture, and not all mine (seeing as they're going to wonderful homes, most of them), but it's a collection of SAKs, nonetheless:
Let's see,
top row - five My First Victorinox Pluses, Mechanic Jr.
left side - Black Cadet, Olive Green Cadet, Star of David Classic SD
middle - Autumn Orange Cadet, Forester (plus minidriver), 05 Charles Elsner old Soldier, Cadet II with modern scales, Collector's book
right side - vintage German multiknife, AutoTool
-
Really digging the Mechanic Jr. and the black and Olive Cadets.
-
Really digging the Mechanic Jr. and the black and Olive Cadets.
If you want any of them, let me know and I'll keep my eyes open for some additional models at the next gun and knife show; those three are already claimed, but one seller (from whom I got the Collector's book, the AutoTool, Cadet II, and Autumn Orange Cadet), also had the Cadets in the other colors. :)
-
I'm kinda diggin' that Forester. Looks like a good thing to through in a hiking pack as a just in case deal.

That was my though as well. Just right for a day hike where you're not expecting to have to use a knife or saw but nice to have a good sized tool just in case. :)
-
I can attest to that. Although I traded my custom oak scaled Forester with Flash :P
It is a damn good tool though, except for the blade locks which ultimately caused mine's demise.....
-
I can live with the locks, but they are annoying for us normal handed people. :D
-
Too right. Since when did lefties have rights?
I blame the Suffragette movement. And the Romans.
-
Due to the lock being fairly stiff it's only marginally easier as a leftie TBH.

LOL! Dave I needed that, thanks. :) I really like that yellow. I love my stayglow scales, but I'd love to get my hands on those yellow ones...I'd put them on the Swiss Champ definitely and probably the new Hiker. Oooh, that would be sweet! Out of curiosity, does anyone ever put one color scale on one side and a different color on the other?

are the top ones mods?
-
I'm guessing that none of those are mods :) Two original runs and one very limited modern run.
Nice Wenger there, certainly in better condition than my one of those. Though that does give me the advantage that I do occasionally carry and use it... that should keep Ben happy ;)

Did a little searching. What I thought was just sombodies name is actually a Swiss toy store chain. The knife has Franz Carl Weber on the blade.

Yes, I have seen several refer to the newer boy scout explorer as a Yeoman. But its definately different than the original.

I've just dug another old Executive out of my nasty crud pile. I think its probably worth resurecting as its old style scissors and Victoria tang. This one's black with CRAY GROUP in nickel silver inlay on the side. I'll post pictures when its finished in the beauty parlour.
-
Nice, what is that long tool on the flame scales model?
-
If you mean this one...
Its a nail file /cleaner.

Yeah, that one, never saw that before.

You sometimes see them like that on the backside of scissors on older 84 and 91mm Victorinox SAKs.

Does anyone here specifically collect the Buck branded Wenger series?

I was tempted to try and get the whole set, but bidding on them usually goes higher than I am willing to spend. So, my guess is that there are others who specifically collect these models- hopefully one of them will be here and chime in!

I have been able to take some better photos lately and here are some of the US Military marked SAK's. I am still working on trying to get some better lighting. Might be good enough for SAKtivities photos?

might sound a silly idea but maybe try putting a piece of paper infront of your light source it might help get rid of the shine and make them look more evenly lit
-
OK, so like a diffuser of sorts? I really need to build some kind of light box.
-
Not always needed. I never use a light box. I just bounce my flash off a ceiling or far wall. I love my S5 IS due to the top mounted hot shoe. You do not want direct flash for this sort of photography. Diffuse the light and you should get better results. You can do this in several ways:
1. If your camera has an external hot shoe mount, place an accessory flash gun onto that mount and rotate the head anywhere but directly at the object you want to photograph. Experimenting with light direction is your best bet to find out what will give you the best even lighting.
2. If you have a compact camera with no hot shoe on the top of it, you can diffuse the direct flash by placing a white paper over it. I have found wax paper works great. Likewise, you can cut a slot in one of those old clear film canisters and mount that over the flash. Experiment with different papers etc.
3. Another thing to play with that I know also works...shoot through a circular fluorescent light if you can...or mount a circular fluorescent bulb over your photography area. This will bath the object under it in even lighting. Mount the camera on a tripod to take the shot without a flash, or use direct flash for that highlight effect.
4. Don't get me wrong, soft boxes have their place. However, you are still stuck tripod mounting the camera and not using the flash otherwise it will overpower your light box lighting. They are easy to build (once again, wax paper is great stuff), and you can use flashlights on the sides to control the lighting. A light box is used when you plan on using multiple light sources to try and even out or to give it that side shadow look for depth. I just find that other simpler methods give better easier results. To each their own though. There are no hard and fast rules in photography.

Thanks for the tips. I did have and use an older 35mm SLR Canon AE with good results. The shutter is giving problems and I would rather use a digital camera now anyway. I have compact Fuji Finepix cameras I have been using with top or front mounted flash. My wife just bought me a Nikon compact digital with front flash but I am not using it yet due to software compatibility issues.
Just how are you using/mounting wax paper over the flash to act as a diffuser? Just tape? Do you cut slits in it or leave it alone? I have had a few problems with macro photography with front mounted flash you end up with a dark spot in the lower left hand corner. Tried adding light to that area to help but it still looks dark there.

As I had both a Victorinox and a Wenger MoneyClip out I thought I'd do a comparison picture, just because someone might find it useful :)
