Title: What's better than Alox?
Post by: Nix on August 13, 2017, 01:01:09 AM
Alox with scissors!

I love the slim size and easy carry that comes with a Victorinox Soldier (93mm, Alox version). Truly, the Alox Soldier is my favorite SAK. But, the Vic scissors are just fantastic, and so useful that the Pioneer X model has won me over. Maybe I just need a better job. A job where scissors aren't so useful. A job that requires a saw.....a Farmer!

....however, until then...I love me some scissors.

So, I'm curious, which do you prefer with your Alox models, Saw or Scissors? Vote, and please state why you prefer (or not) one tool over the other.

I'd like a Pioneer X with file on the saw backspring, and wood scales and brass bolsters

Merci.   :salute:

Now, let's Poll!

I voted neither because getting either one in 84mm alox is difficult and I am bitter about that!

Oh, I hear that. (But I'd love a Cadet + scissors layer.)

I voted "neither" even though I must have scissors (and a toothpick).

I did so because I only carry one- or two-layer Alox models. My usual carry is a cellidor Compact, but lately I've varied this a bit, with Pioneer in my left pocket and a Classic on my key ring.

Wait, you're a scissors fan, but you you voted 'neither'? Would you think about a Pioneer X?

The Compact is a huge hit with me.

(BTW, my grunt brother was assigned to the Big Red One.  :salute:)

I voted "neither" because it seemed the question was really a choice between the Farmer and the Pioneer X. In my mind Alox has two advantages: durability and thinness. Adding a third layer makes it too heavy/bulky for me.

What I want is Victorinox to offer combo tool options in the 93mm Alox line.

I voted for the scissors. If a saw is needed then bigger is better.

There is a certain wisdom in that.....  :multi:

To put it another way, I would rather 93mm alox had an inline phillips than a saw.

So you and I and about 1,000,000 other SAK users have the same wish there. Why hasn't Victorinox done this?  Is there an engineering limitation?

(I do like the saw though....)

No limitation, heaps of peeps have done it already, I will be doing it soon as well.

I voted for the saw.

The little scissors on my 58mm manager which I always have with me, I need quite rare.
But when I need it, it is big enough. So I never need a scissors at a bigger knife.
But I often need the saw at work.

Not that I think the scissors/saw are ridiculous in any way, but i prefer Pioneers and Soldiers when it comes to Alox.

Hey Zoidberg,
If you haven't purchased the pivots and screws yet,  where are you planning to get them from?
l'll split the minimum order/ postage costs with you.
Cheers
George

My vote went with scissors.
I have 2 Alox with scissors, one of them also has the saw :tu:
I tend to use the scissors almost every day but the saw only occasionally (I like to have one just in case).

(I must try for some decent photos of them to try for an Alox with scissors badge) :pok:

If  they'd come back with the Alox handled Dutch issue Master Craftsman, that would be perfect.
