To cut a long story short, I've been experimenting with making my own wooden scales, and I think I'm nearly there.
I'm looking therefore for nice (preferably new) SAKs to put them on, or to butcher to create my own combinations, and it doesn't seem worth paying a premium price for scales that I intend to rip straight off! So my question is, the ECO range, is it just the scales that are "cheaper", or are there other differences in the knives. Specifically, are the tools inferior in any way?

Rest assured the Eco line are not seconds, just a less expensive scale with a hot stamped shield.

I've heard that the QC isn't as tight but that hasn't been my experience. Get the Eco you won't have a problem.

Thanks guys, that's what I thought.
I did actually buy one a few months ago, and broke it up as a good quality donor knife for a custom SAK, and I couldn't notice a difference, but wasn't sure if there was a lesser quality steel used or something.
I'm in the latter stages of putting together my latest hair-brained scheme (it's a Christmas present for my Dad, so it'll be finished tomorrow come hell or high water!), then I'll post up some pics and see what you think.

Yay Eco Knives!
I don't know of any reason why an Econoline SAK wouldn't be perfect for modder fodder.

The quality control as far as the mechanics or functionality of the knife are just as high on the Eco line, it's cosmetic issues that make a SAK an Eco. Of course, that doesn't mean that they are damaged, or even seconds, it just means that they don't go through the same rigorous polishing that the regular line goes through. Less time spend polishing every blade on a SAK means less money into it, meaning you spend less on it.
The blades and other implements though are from exactly the same bins and stock as every other blade, pin, liner etc, so no fear of there being anything wrong with your knife.
Amusingly enough, even Victorinox can't tell the difference- if you strip the Eco scales off your knife and send it in for warranty work, it will come back with cellidor scales on it! :D

Truth be told, I like ECO scales better than cellidor.. They are far more scratch resistant and they wear better.. BTW, does the 111mm knives have ECO scales? I've got a few of them, and I can't tell!

They aren't Eco scales per se.... Victorinox doesn't refer to them as Eco (short for Economy). They just call them what they are- textured nylon. The textured nylon is also what they use on the 111mm series, and since they don't make a cellidor 111mm model there was no point in giving them a special name to distinguish them like there was with 91 and 84mm knives.

I was just offered a used Spartan with a good price. I was about to buy it when I noticed it had a nylon scale. I'm okay with nylon EXCEPT for the fact that the logo fades away. Tsk, tsk

I know, I'd love for Plus Nylon scales with an inset shield, like that of the cellidor scales.

One other question about the Eco line scales that I will piggyback on this thread. They don't have the slot for the straight pin that the Celidor scales have, correct?

From memory, no, they do not have the pin slot.

Hmmm, full disclosure: mine has the older 4-line tang stamp. IDK if that matters.

Not sure. Mine looks like it was made yesterday, as do almost all of my SAKs and MTs.
