Title: Maxpedition EDC Organiser Owners Club
Post by: cerbera147 on January 13, 2010, 09:52:09 PM
As there are threads and clubs for various multi tools I thought we could have one for the seemingly popular Maxpedition EDC Organiser (http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=961&idcategory=0)  :drink:

I would be keen to see what everyone else is stocking theirs with and get some ideas all in one handy thread  :D

Obviously this isn't limited the Maxped version; all edc organisers welcome  :salute:

So here is mine. I only got it a couple of days ago and this is my first set up.

Or Allan :D

The one I ordered in khaki showed up today. No photo yet though it's almost full now except for a peanut lighter and tweezer I am waiting on. I filled it with useful stuff I will be transferring between a couple of Maxpedition bags that I use though it will primarily be in the Pygmy Falcon II that is my EDC bag. The EDC Organizer fits perfectly in the front slash pocket of the PFII and the little grab handle is ideal for pulling it back out of the pocket. So far I'm pretty happy with it.  :tu:

Are these really meant to be used to organise a pocket?  I tried mine in a cargo pocket and couldn't get things back in without taking the damn thing out of my pocket every time.  :ahhh

I will probably just end up using it as everyone else seems to, to transfer stuff between bags and stop it rattling about.  It just seems silly they would market something as a pocket organiser that can't be used in a pocket.

I'll thrown mine in here.  Just got  it a few days ago.  I've messed around with the order some, but here's the first pic.

I'm not sure that the intention is for one to reach into the pocketed organizer and extract items and then put them back. Rather, one is expected to pull the organizer out, retrieve the item, and then put it back into the pocket. Thus the grab handle.

Of course I think they are best inside a larger bag, but...

I own a lot of Maxpedition and some Spec-Ops gear, but not this Maxpedition organizer.  I don't have a pocket large enough for it.

Can you open up this organizer and zip it inside out?    That would make it easier to access gear while the organizer is inside your pocket without removing the organizer.

I have one, thanks to Yellowhammer :D  but I haven't quite figured out what to use it for yet.

Currently it has the "extra" stuff which can be taken out of the bag easily when not needed. The sort of thing in there is paracord, hand sanitiser, arnica stick, tape measure and things like that. It's very bulked out as these items are quite thick added up.

This may of course change like the wind!  ::)

I'm having a rethink on mine, now I've tried it for a week and have learned some things......

I'm still not totally sure, but the concept works, now I need to refine it a bit  :-\

I may actually get another :D

Ooh, the organisation sickness has got you baaaad! :D

If you want other cases without all the bits in, I got a couple of Crumpler ones for £2 from www.bigoffers.co.uk which were a serious bargain. They have a bunch of cheapo stuff worth checking out and delivered quite fast too.

I'll check those out - thanks Chris :tu:

I do kind of have my eye on a foliage green Maxped one though :D

I'm taking Glorn's advice and have ordered the triple mag holder (http://www.heinnie.com/x5wvym1044954/Bags-and-Wallets/Maxpedition/Accessories/Maxpedition-Triple-Magazine-Holder/p-281-289-358-4365/), and that's where I'm going to put the Charge I think, in the CCW pocket on the Fatboy  :-\

The organiser will then be made more legal / sheeple friendly by putting a PST or Juice, PST II or something in there, with the UKPK in my pocket.

So many things to consider  :ahhh

:tu: It is a small and unassuming bit of kit, but it sure does make that pocket useful. Especially for the tool junkie.

But..

What will you put in the built in sheath? Torch?

And what will you put in the add-on sheath? You know, when you order it..   ;)

It never ends. But then, getting there is half the fun, isn't it?  :D

And new kit comes out every year. So the evolution continues. It's almost a hobby in and of itself. I can think of many more useless hobbies though. At least my obsessions make my daily life easier.

Tinkering with stuff configuration is definitely one of my main hobbies, but I realise that I get a lot of enjoyment out of it without having to buy new stuff (too often).

It really is half the fun of being in to this stuff for me personally :D

Well it arrived this morning and now I'm wondering how the hell I managed before - so cheers for the tip Glorn mate

With my Fatboy, and with my old Thermite, I never used the CCW pocket much at all, because I couldn't see a practical use for it. Now I can!

Cheers to you!

Isn't it terrific that they came up with such a smart little thing? I gotta say, Maxpedition really has it together over there. Which is precisely why I don't mind playing unpaid spokesperson for them. It simply is rock solid kit.

Now, are you carrying the organizer in the main pocket? It works very well. As I said before, all you need now is a "single sheath" like this (http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=187&idcategory=9) to attach on the side pouch. You know, with the built in sheath and the add-on sheath... and the triple mag holder... one could carry any combination of five items and still have the rest of the bag free. So you could have 2 MTs, 2 lights, and a good size folder... or 2 folders, 2 MTs and a light... or....  :ahhh

Dave, that is a drool worthy kit.  :salute:

Here are some comparison shots of a Maxpedition vs. a CountyComm vs. a surplus store model whose maker I have forgotten:

Top is Maxpedition, Bottom Left is surplus store, Bottom Right is CountyComm

All of them were worth the money. The Maxpedition was the most expensive by far, but it is also the most feature rich, well built, and largest. The other two are similar, but the CountyComm is nicer. It has nicer stitching, better interior fabric, and better elastic. The surplus version is a bit shoddy on the finish. It does have a subdivided right side pocket though, which is kind of nice. Oddly enough, the CountyComm was the cheapest, not the surplus version.

Still, I like them all for what they are. The surplus version houses my cocktail recipe moleskine and a pen. CountyComm is currently on holiday.

Hmmm - I still can't tell!

Maxpedition's Khaki is a lot more green than some manufacturer's - I reckon that could be it. I have (pending a trade) a Khaki Thermite Versipack, and a cocoon pouch here and holding them up to the screen, there isn't much difference.

OD Green:

1. Disposable lighter
2. Zebra mini LiteRite
3. Fisher Space pen
4. Leatherman Serac S1
5. Zebra telescopic pen
6. Marbles Handyman II (looking for another folding ruler to replace this though)
7. Cheap fauxton

10. Leatherman Micra
11. Leatherman Bit card & bits
12. Slim Moleskine notebook
13. Painkillers
14. Piece of card to stiffen the thing up a bit.

Oh, and there's a Milspec Monkey patch on the front :D

I'm still toying with the EDC Org theme  :tu: tho the Max EDC Org didn't turn out for me I'm looking for something more like this I'm working with ATM but maybe a more robust version ,JMO but I'm looking for that happy medium low profile footprint and removable organizer insert  I don't think the fanny pack appeals to many but it's a start  :D BTW I'm getting it all in here same as in the Max EDC O dimensions 230mm length x 100mm height  x 30mm thick(fully loaded)  :salute:

I'm keeping to this theme as I'm sure I'll find that perfect system eventually   :D for the moment it's easier to carry on my waist unlike the Max "which is great for some people" you have to carry in hand or bag or you could attach to a belt but I found it to baulky IMO.

I was looking at the Zippos after someone mentioned them here the other day. They do look useful, but I'd definitely prefer a ruler if I can find one.

I haven't ruled out making one by cutting down a steel rule yet. It looks doable with a bit of patience maybe.

I'm happy with the helper rule for small measurements like flashlight dia, knife blades ect,but for the odd times you need to measure a cooker, table that kinda thing the zippo will be better served I'll just carry both   ;)

How about one of these (http://www.tecaccessories.com/products/product.php?II=28)? I know I'd go for it if they came out with a metric version. :-\

Slightly off-topic.  Does anyone have the Max 3x5 notepad holder as a mini EDC organizer?  I am on my second order on one (2-3 week wait) and want to know if it is worth the wait, Im getting it either way.

I got one, and I really like it.

The top loops hold a Leatherman Juice Cs4, a Zebra telescoping pen(with fisher space pen refill) and a 4sevens Quark123.

I  have a 3x5 rite in the rain notebook in the bottom sleeve.

Work great for a mini-organizer.

This thread's gone quiet, so here's an update on mine. During the last month or so, I've finally settled on a combination that works for me, whether I'm at home, work or out and about. I'll often complement the organiser with my Charge and UKPK, but when at work for example, I've lacked nothing so far with just this setup.

1. Cheap fauxton light.
2. Stainless steel Sharpie.
3. Zebra mini LiteRite.
4. Leatherman Crunch (not quite UK legal I know, but hey ho).
5. PST II.
6. 15 cm steel rule.
7. Slim Moleskine notebook.
8. Painkillers.
9. Zebra telescopic pen.
10. Leatherman Serac S1 light.
11. Leatherman Micra.
12. Disposable lighter.
13. Leatherman bit card to complement Charge.
14. Atwood Metwrench.
15. Zippo tape measure.

I'm finding this is a good balance between weight, utility and legality for EDC in the UK. I'm not predicting any major changes now :)

Nothing serious, but I listen to shortwave and like to fiddle with vintage radios and such. I Also was just given a Nikon D80 by my sister(she upgraded her equipment) and have been learning the ins and outs of handling a quality DSLR.

It doesn't show in the pics, but the legs extend. It's really sturdy for the price.

I imagine they had a shuttle bus though.

I always use City going to Manchester  :tu:

Yeah there were buses they said.

I used international for the first time today, as there's no choice from East Mids airport - which is much closer to home for me. It was OK too :)

Drill a hole through "mini tripod" the plastic feet 1/4 " and you can can extend it further with sticks or wire out in the field, height determined to your wish, you can also use a fence or wall to gain height..use your imagination    ;)

Here's my EDC Organiser. It's quite new and I am not sure if the setup will last... If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
You can't see: a pocket plastic raincoat, a moleskin notebook, some band-aids, a few meters of thin cord, a mirror and a collection of different codes which I use for geocaching (morsecode, ASCII-Code and such things).

What's the telescopic thing on the left?  I have something similar with a mirror on it but yours seems not to have one.
Title: Re: Maxpedition EDC Organiser Owners Club
Post by: Turnstone on June 22, 2010, 01:01:31 PM
It has a quite strong magnet on the top. It came together with a mirror, but I don't use the telescopic mirror a lot (but I can attach my normal mirror to the magnet, if I need a telescopic mirror).

Yeah I'm after a black one. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.

I ordered a few things to go in it from the same company and about half arrived within a week so I'm guessing they are out of stock on a few items and the Organiser may be on back order.

Hopefully they will get back to me today and let me know what's going on.

So a month and a day after I order my organiser and a week after an unanswered email I ring the company I've ordered the stuff from.

Me: I got some of my stuff, where's the rest?"

Them: "Uh we have the Organiser here but we are waiting on the last item to arrive. Will be here by the end of the month" (so 2 months from when I ordered it)

Me: "Cancel the rest, send me the bag"

Should have added "WHEN WERE YOU PLANNING ON TELLING ME THIS?" but I'm too nice. Anyway, should be here in a few days........

I won't slag them publicly but if any Aussie or Kiwi's want some feedback on a large antipodean online tactical gear supplier then I would be happy to provide it.

Exactly.  It still amazes me that some businesses don't get the fact that all they really need to do to is talk to their costumers, especially when things aren't quite going to plan.

Quite  >:(

LAPG took nearly 2 months to send stuff I ordered to my friends in the US. They didn't bother mentioning on the site or at checkout that half the stuff was out of stock, and they took about another 3 weeks to send an email explaining there were delays.... crap.
Title: Re: Maxpedition EDC Organiser Owners Club
Post by: Turnstone on July 06, 2010, 08:53:54 AM
Same problem with my EDC organiser... The shop website said it was in stock, and after I ordered I got an automatic notification that my order would be delayed for about 10 days. After 20 days I asked politely when I would get my organizer. They told me they would get them on monday. Monday I got a mail that my organiser was shipped, but when I checked the shipping number the parcel went out not on monday but on tuesday  I was really pissed off, and I wrote them an email that it was not OK. But they replied that all was best. The organisers were in stock, only the black one not, so the shop info was correct , and everything else was fine, too. I guess that was the first and last time I ordered there. The shop was a recommendation of the German messerforum.net and got lots of good reviews :ahhh

Well credit where credit is due, when things are in stock they ship quickly. Its here.

I'm making a conscious effort at the moment to pretty much only put things in it that I already already have loose in my daypack so that's what's shown now in the pic below. Most things should be self explanatory, ask if you have any questions.

I'm sure there will be some changes. I usually have the CRKT M16 in my pocket but I've a SAK (unsure of the exact type sorry-don't hurt me) unused at the moment so that might get subbed in at some point.

Otherwise I really like the bag and as you can see by my post above, it might not be the last Maxped thing I get.

Got one of them.  My MP3 player acts as an emergency USB (though rarely used), and I normally have a SAK+toothpick in my pocket.  A few ibuprofen in a capsule sounds like a good idea though. :tu:

You know I hadn't even realised I was colour coordinating. :D  I'm very much a green/brown colour fan when it comes to gear so the black would have just looked odd when put next to my other stuff.

I know of one good use for a credit card; I keep an expired one in my Maxpedition EDC PO as a door lock liberator. (well, actually, a plastic store gift card).

There's an even better material for this application used by locksmiths called "super mica" but I can't find any way to purchase a small, inexpensive quantity so I make do with the gift card.

Note: I get locked out of my home sometimes. I'd never use nor advocate any illegal use of such items, just to be clear.

[eta: They also make a good form to wrap a small quantity of EDC duct tape around.]

I know of one good use for a credit card; I keep an expired one in my Maxpedition EDC PO as a door lock liberator. (well, actually, a plastic store gift card).

Yup, my duct tape is wrapped round a credit card (or room pass card if I'm honest).

My duct tape is around a how-do-you-call-a-screw-with-flat-tip-and-an-loop-on-the-other-side?, with a lenght of double-sided tape. a bit more bulky than a lipstick, easy to carry.

Nice set up, Thehunt!

Which 111 Vic is that? Appears to be a Sentinel maybe?

What is that Vic pen-looking thing?

And... what's in the Ziploc bag?

Thanks!

The Vic is a Nomad, alternating with the Forrester C.
The Pen-thingie is a Victorinox sharpening stick, works quite well so far.

The Ziplock bag holds a space blanket. Another zippie is in the mesh pocket, containing painkillers, bandaids and steri-strips

What's in the flat black sheath in the second photo, I can't quite make it out?

---

Your picture reminded me of something I wanted to share with everyone. For people like me who rarely ever use a tape measure but would like to have an emergency one on hand, just in case, that's super small/light, wallet sized, disposable if it breaks, and effectively free, I've come to discover one can print one out and assemble it oneself with transparent tape (we call that "scotch" tape around these parts but I'm not sure if that's the international term):

Printable Tape Measures and Rulers

http://www.vendian.org/mncharity/dir3/paper_rulers (http://www.vendian.org/mncharity/dir3/paper_rulers)

Be sure not to use "shrink to fit" or any other such printer alterations. If one constructs it using a real yard/meter stick underneath as a template while taping it all together, one can have a reasonably accurate end product. Certainly not as durable as the real deal, but if you tend to use such things as infrequently as I do, the the savings is size/bulk is worth it. I keep it folded up in a credit card compartment, (clear vinyl holder), along with other flat small things (bandaids/plasters, magnifying fresnel lens, folded shopping bag, etc.) in the back section of my EDC organizer.

Excellent link mzil. :tu:

The leather sheath contains a DC4 sharpener.  Great 'on the go' sharpening tool IMO.

Nice idea!
Here in Germany you often find free paper tape measures at hardware stores or large furniture stores (like IKEA), together with notepads and pencils. I never thought about it, but next time I will take one with me to add it to my EDC organizer. Something to measure is missing in there!

So, after reading through the 22 pages of this post, watching 3,642 YouTube videos on it, and going with a modular system in my new EDC bag (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,2881.msg487319.html#msg487319), I've decided to join the club. I'm using the Maxpedition EDC Organizer (http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/E-D-C-POCKET-ORGANIZER-21p961.htm) as the place to hold the items I use most, but don't carry in my pockets or on my belt.

It's currently a work in progress, undergoing evolution as I find which items I'm reaching for the most. But instead of waiting until there is a finished setup (if there ever will be), I wanted to share pictures as I go (thanks to AHB (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1541) for the idea  :tu:)

Thanks. Yea, for some reason I had it stuck in my head that "I just needed finish my load-out" before I posted here. And it wasn't until Allan mentioned me posting here, in my CoreClip post (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,28757.0.html) that it occurred to me that I may never finish.

Anyway, I'm hoping that I get it to a "mostly" finalized set-up. Similar to what I said, I'm trying to treat it more like an extension of my pocket carry. A place to keep stuff that I would otherwise like to keep on me, but don't want to be lugging around in my pockets all day.

It sure is fun rearranging though... :D

I've thought about keeping a cheap light to lend out, but the idea of someone using my tools, and then getting the impression that I carry cheap junk bothers me.

And besides, Monarch 300's are less than $15.00 now, which doesn't seem too high for a "lender".

My (theoretical) solution to the lend out problem.

"Hey, mzil, can I borrow that flashlight I always see you have on you?"

"No"

"Sure but if you break it or scratch it, you owe me another new one of the same. It is a prized tool of mine."

"Sorry, the battery just died."

Then, when/if they see you using it later, if on the same day:

"Well what do you know? I did have an extra spare battery in my other coat/bag/locker after all! Lucky me."

BWA-HA-HA-HA. >:D
Title: Re: Maxpedition EDC Organiser Owners Club
Post by: turnsouth on June 23, 2011, 02:45:59 AM
Thanks Nuphoria, and Allan.

I realized that I made an a couple of omissions in the list of the contents. If you'll look at the little paracord loop that Maxpedition puts on right side, you'll see I keep a "size 0" Nite Ize S-Biner. It's handy when I want to add something temporally to the set-up, or if I want to unload something in my pockets for a while. It's quick and I always know right where I put it.

The other thing you'll see is that I have replaced the knots on the zipper pulls with actual cord ends. Adds a much more finished look, and gives that feeling of sturdiness when they are used. When un-knotted, and cut in half, one pull is the perfect length for two pulls with ends.

I've made two recent changes as well.

I was looking for a better way to store my batteries, AA's for the Quark, and AAA for the Monarch. The Spare Power sleeve is just too bulky the way it holds the batteries end-to-end. I could never find a place for it in the back pocket where it seemed to fit naturally. So I was trying to come up with a method of storing them side-by-side, that way they could tuck down in the bottom, in a space that was not used by the outside tools. And then it hit me, I realized that carrying any batteries in the organizer is not in keeping with my "Things I use most, but don't carry in my pockets" philosophy. So they were relegated to the Nite Ize Hip Pock-Its that resides in the first layer of my EDC bag. Makes a lot more sense (to me anyway), still easily accessible, and allows me to carry more than one spare set as well.

The second change is a exciting new addition:

It's a Moleskine Cahier Pocket Ruled Notebook (http://www.moleskineus.com/cahier-pocket-ruled.html). It's black (the textured surface shows up lighter photographed under my work light), has 64 lined pages, with the last 16 removable, hand stitched spine, and a pocket in the rear cover. The size is 3.5 x 5.5 x 1/8 inches (9 x 14 cm x 3mm), and just about a perfect fit in the rear pocket. The price is good too, they are only three for $7.95 retail:

My (theoretical) solution to the lend out problem...

That's good idea  :tu:

My problem is that I enjoy lending, it feeds my hedonism. There's nothing better than when someone gives you back one of your tools and says "Man that's cool, where can I get one of those?"

How did that happen?  :o

Nice setup BTW  :tu: I just got the Mini Organiser and when the Micro is available I'll probably get it as well. I may have a problem  ::)

Heinnies are taking orders now for the micro. My confirmation email said 7 to 10 days.

I might give that one a miss unless at a good price :)

I've got a Spec Ops Pack Rat and the LAPG version; they help keep me organised in a larger format :D

I really fancy a micro but I can't justify one :)

The Mini looks good too but I think the elastic is in a better place for my needs on the micro.  If I were a rich man I'd do the honourable thing and buy both :D

Not being able to hold a standard BIC pen means this could never be a primary organizer for me but still might be useful as a secondary carry location for smaller items.

Thanks for pointing that size limitation out!

Oops, I forgot to update this, I got the Micro on Tuesday and do like it.  The size is much more conducive to pocket carry than it's bigger brother and you can still get a good amount of gear into it.

with note pad, duct tape and platers tucked in the pockets.

My only slight complaint is that the interior material (in grey) is a lighter grade of material than the rest of the organiser. :-\  This isn't the case with my other, original sized one.

I got the Fatboy S type versipack, the CP-M phone holster, Tac Ties, Keypers, the universal CCW holster.  I love the setup especially because the CCW holster works so well.  The phone holster won't work with my iPhone, but I'll find a use for it.  The whole idea for me, was to get organised, but right now I'm still in the "switching everything around" mode.  I know what will definitely be at home in it - my Glock 27, an extra clip for the Glock, a Swamp Rat Swamp Warden knife, embassy pen, a good flashlight (right now I am using a Coleman Max light), a compass, some paracord, a Supertool 300 - and I have plenty of room left to ad items.  Knowing me it will always be in a state of change, or growth sounds better, I guess.

So I've started building an EDC bag for non-work use (yes it's a man-purse ;)). I'm basing it on the Maxpedition NeatFreak Organizer (http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/NEATFREAK-ORGANIZER-13p58.htm), and I decided (like my work bag) to go with a modular system. As I've been playing with the load-out, I've found that two of the pockets inside fit the Micro Pocket Organizer (http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/Micro-Pocket-Organizer-7p1685.htm) perfectly, and I decided to build two small EDC kits with these as a start:

The first one for electronics, containing:

The second one for a mini tool kit, containing:

Simple layouts, but since they're built for specific purposes, they'll be easy to grab out of the bag as needed.

Nice setup.  I recently went modular and it's so much easier when switching bags.  I have a work bag and a weekend bag.  Much easier moving my mapped pouches around than trying to slide everything into slots in each bag.

Thanks. I've found it a great pleasure. My old work bag, that I had for 10 years, was laid out perfect for individual items (not unlike the NeatFreak), but since going to the modular system, I'll never go back.

Holly cow! :o Is that a kitchen sink behind the blue ruler? :D
Almost.  :)  Unfortunately, the picture can only show the visible top layer. The blue ruler section, for example, is actually (top to bottom):

- 6" span of clear Scotch tape
- Blue metric/imperial ruler (also acts as a lock shim and two-sided tape backer)
- 6" span of black electrical tape on the reverse side
- DeWalt "wood with nails" saw blade used in the black handle in the section seen to the right, (instead of its retracted, shortened hack saw blade you see).
- Modified Stanley pry bar/nail puller with added, homemade safety caps
- Power Wrench II multi-tool

This is a good example of one of my many packing tricks for maximum capacity: stack all flat items together in layers, like a sandwich or pancakes. Why fill a section with only one item when you can fit a half dozen? :D

[Another trick I use is to cluster all cylindrical items together, with the smaller diameter ones used to fill the gaps...Notice how everything in my organizer's right section, under the main straps, has a circular (or at least oval) cross section?  ;)]

Here's a video which better shows the front section of of my experimental kit, I showed above. This is the sped up, "coming attractions teaser" version, without audio, of me describing each item and what it's for, including several custom, handmade/modified tools many of you wont recognize (for instance, the one I'm shown holding), however since the video is played in reverse, it seems as if I am assembling my kit rather than breaking it down!  ;)

Time to shake another thread awake - A pic I used in another thread as part of everything I carry, but then stumbled backwards into this one this morning.

That's how it looked yesterday, before reading a (n unacknowledged but helpful) comment by nuphoria. This morning, it has some wire ties in one of the 'pouches'. And I've ordered a 'Widgy', so I think that will be added in here when that arrives.

Hey nuphoria - thank you. Good idea.

I have the organizer, too, but somehow I can't and can't really like it... I've tried using it as whatnot- a pocket/bag organizer and currently I just keep my house tools in it i.e. not something I'd like dealing every day with. Things aren't that accessible in it according to me- you have to lay it on a falt surface and open the whooole zipper ... or if you don't put it on a flat surface, it's just... all horizontal and you can't really operate well with it... You can't dig through its contents if the zipper(s) aren't fully open..

But that's only my opinion, of course :D May be I'm so helpless at organizing that even Maxpedition can't help me  :D

After having seen, and tinkered with a Maxpedition EDC organiser, I came to the conclusion that it's small for me. I had contacted my friend Dark at Darktactical, and ordered a 95% copy of the original EDC organiser, the 5% change was swapping the mesh to simple cordura, I have a very bad trait regarding meshes. They tend to disintegrate when I'm near. :D The other change was a bit of size optimising, so to say, the organiser was scaled up to fill the side pocket of a BDU trouser.

The whole stuff was made out of 1100D WL cordura, with YKK zippers.

Yes it's a RAVEN .25 cal AUTO PISTOL.  In the 1980's millions were sold, usually for around $50-75.  The pistol was originally made by a company RAVEN ARMS but later produced by PHOENIX ARMS (still being called the RAVEN)

It's basically a "belly gun"  or also called a "junk gun" or a "Saturday Night Special"  The U.S. Government hated the gun because it was so cheap, it made it readily available to criminals (pimps and hoes)  You could pull the gun out of your pockets, hold it to someones stomach, shoot it, and then throw the damn thing in the garbage because it wasn't that expensive (and is now evidence)  Ha!  The Raven .25 has been out of production since 1993 and now you can get one on the secondary market for anywhere from $75-$150.

But basically it's a real piece of sh*t, nothing you could trust you life on.  I bought it for curiosity sake, it's fun to shoot but I would never really carry that thing.

If you want an awesome pistol (that fits even better in the MaxPed) check out the RUGER LCP .380  it's a newer pistol, still in production, selling like crazy and shoots a bullet 10 times bigger than the raven, plus it weights only 13oz since the frame is polymer!

You have a needle but you forgot thread :pok:  (unless you count the strings in the paracord, but I prefer regular thread) Awesome setup, I especially liked the positioning of the cable ties, never occurred to me to try shoving something in there. :tu:

Another thing is that Key Tool bit driver. Is it plastic? Will it take a lot of torque without flexing? I recently got a Chapman mini ratchet. It's really small but very useful and would hardly take up any space in your kit. Here's a review of it over on EDCF by xbanker.

Good point about the missing thread. To tell you the truth, I don't keep a needle and thread even in my giant tool box either, and rarely sew, but it certainly could come in handy.

The needle lives in the spine of my Maxped(s) permanently, next to the safety pin, regardless of kit design or purpose. [This is why both of them didn't make it to the exploded photo shown in the video, however I did extract them for the photo I posted here in the thread].

In my survival based kits I usually keep a spool of dental floss as my thread (extremely strong stuff) or, as you mention, can use the paracord inner strands which themselves breakdown into even thinner sub units, BTW.

The Key Tool is plastic but strong. It was chosen because it is the tiniest design I have and I prefer it with the Leatherman bit extender over the County Comm EDC-Key Screwdriver which is analogous, but doesn't have a "stubby" length mode capability using the bit alone, without the extension, like the Key Tool does without the Leatherman part, for really tight spaces.

This kit was just an experiment, I don't use this as an EDC bag, but a ratcheting design like you suggest might be a better bet. If I were to have one I would only consider ones with a conventional bit holder option at the end for tight spaces, where you don't have the room to be swinging a ratchet handle around. I bought a Rocket Ratchet that has that feature.https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=rocket+ratchet&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&biw=1117&bih=550&wrapid=tlif134421537394610&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=YBkfUMuFHsry0gGY24DQCQ (https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=rocket+ratchet&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&biw=1117&bih=550&wrapid=tlif134421537394610&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=YBkfUMuFHsry0gGY24DQCQ)

[Further rant]: This "no room to be swinging a handle around" problem is also why my kit has a real adjustable wrench, which in a pinch can even attack a nut/bolt at a right angle, instead of the ubiquitous multi-position V-opening mouths of many pocket tools like the Pocket Wrench II  , etc, which assume the nut is free and clear on a top surface and not recessed down a hole/valley or at a right angle to a surface (like the side bolts on many car battery posts).

What are in the two straws north of the superglue, and the objest just to the left there of? And do you not have the nozzle/cap for your tiny superglue? I had to scrap some bits and a tiny altoids tin when one of the bits hit cap on the end of the nozzle just right several years ago.
Title: Re: Maxpedition EDC Organiser Owners Club
Post by: mzil on August 07, 2012, 04:53:47 AM
I'm thinking maybe you didn't see the video? I can see how you might have missed it since I didn't post it, parnass beat me to it, and the image looks just like the main tool kit photo I had just posted, so you might have glanced over it and thought you were just seeing a duplicate image of my still image, not a link to the YouTube video. Check it out.

I nixed the cap and dispenser to the SINGLE USE super glue because I couldn't fit all 32 bits in the Altoids Smalls tin with them in place, AND because in theory it gets used once and then you throw it away. Trusting the re-capping to truly seal it and have it be "re-usable for another time" is asking for trouble, in my experience [they clog]. That's why I never buy anything but single use ones even when I'm not building a micro sized tool kit and have as much space as I'd possibly want. They are pretty inexpensive, I use maybe one a year, and I'm always safe and confident that I have a real, working one at hand that's factory fresh.

I've had super glue containers bust on me too, which is why I take the precautions I mention in the video.

EDIT TO ADD: OOps, I just realized the video may be out of reach to you due to some other restrictions. Answer to your questions: Elmer's white glue and concentrated liquid soap, glue gun stick I melt with matches/burning popsicle stick

I now own each of the 5 flavors of Maxpedition EDC organizer (micro, mini, EDC, fatty and beefy), along with a few of the Countycomm versions.

And I don't really use any of them.

But it sure makes me feel good to order one, wait for it, get it out of the mailbox and open it up.

At that price, NO. :ahhh that's more than double what I paid for mine. If you shop around ebay you can get them much cheaper. I don't see any as cheap currently but here's one for cca $33 shipped http://www.ebay.com/itm/321093586135

Post by: kkokkolis on April 21, 2013, 10:19:16 AM
Yes, everything is more expensive here, except Victorinox SAKs. But many US vendors don't ship here and if they do there is some risk loosing the item in the post or custom or paying some amount in the customs. I lost once a 300€ eyepiece, because the seller from US didn't send it registered.
Anyway, I'll think of it. If I get something from the states I have Skinths to consider also.

And that's how I've put my stuff in it... there's still room in the left back pocket, but I put my keys either there or outside in the mesh pocket, so I need it to be "looser" there. There are also two spare batteries and some additional papers you can't see in the picture.

(http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg95/nikoleta_rangelova/14052013232_zpsd67d2b63.jpg) (http://s246.photobucket.com/user/nikoleta_rangelova/media/14052013232_zpsd67d2b63.jpg.html)

I've read comments by people who claim that the right corner of the back pocket has torn, but mine's okay so far. You just shouldn't cram everything you have in it, for this you have the larger organizers. Love it so far :D

I've developed a love/hate relationship with the MaxPed EDC's...  I love all the pockets and things but that makes me want to use every single one in some way, so they end up being too fat and hard to carry!  Argh!!!  I find myself loading one up for something, initially being happy with it, but then finding it, well, too fat or heavy, and I take all the crap I put in it and put it in something else.  Then I find I want more organization capacity, and go back to one of my MP-EDC's, and the cycle continues!

After my last post in this thread, I went and got out my regular size MP EDC-O and put my small personal items in it.  It's working well so far, I think because I didn't over-stuff it.  I think that's the key to making them work well, not trying to make use of every single loop and pocket in one.  I've still got unused loops in my regular and so far it's working much better than before.  I'll post a pic later if I can; very busy today.

Great! Ohhhh, I also disliked this thing. I mean, there were a few occasions on which I used it, but it was rarely. I also didn't want to regret it, so I just tucked it in one of the pockets or fed it through one of the smaller loops outside and hung a key I don't use often to it or sth, so that it doesn't hinder me in the back pocket when I put sth there.

Don't cut! I recommend snapping it off instead so you can replace it later if you change your mind.

The ball in socket pivot area easily comes undone by the following instructions:

-Rotate the hook around so the ball aligns with the circular cutout in the hook's trench, aiming the opening side of the hook away from the nylon strap/plastic ball.

- Pinch the two together, between thumb and finger, and the ball will pop out of the hook's grip, freeing the hook to be stored elsewhere.

True, you still have a worthless little plastic ball hanging around, but it is much smaller and allows you to replace the hook if you ever need it, or want to sell the kit to another person.

Is that the PPM Slim? I saw Vanquest had made a smaller one in their line. Kinda like the Maxpedition Micro, but longer, which I'd like.

I have no idea which one this is but it is not remotely the size of the Micro either.

How do the Maxpedition, Vanquest and Condor stack up?

I have and like all three really and find the differences small enough to be almost insignificant overall.

The Maxped. are made of a material sort of like Poly Sandpaper of some kind?
I normally equate this as a cheaper and lower quality choice but in the case of Maxpedition stuff overall this does not seem to be the case at all,if anything it might be too rugged if that makes sense?

The Vanquest is made from what feels to me to be the best quality materials of the three and I prefer the layout of more of them than Maxpeditions too but they sure all do the same job too!

The Condor seem a little unsung to me and I really like each of them that I have, they are maybe not as well made but I have seen no ill effects from this in use, just what I have read.
The Condor are also less pricey at every size which can be nice.

I have and use all 3 brands and have little bad to say about any of them.

It is tough to figure out the correct unit to buy for your stuff for sure, there is no way to really tell until you try what will fit where so you need to buy and try or at least I did.

I think a lot more important decision is color.

Tan Max kits pass just fine as "mini pieces of luggage" or "camera gear bags". I would have no hesitation to use one in an airport.
Black Max kits are the complete opposite. They scream "tactical/assault kit" and I hesitate to use them when traveling because they scare people, including security guards. They make you look like SWAT.

Just read this topic completely. Still waiting for my (really cheap) organizer to arrive and trying to get some ideas on what to put in it.
So, this needs a bump!
What is in your organizer?

Not bad...I have a couple of Maxpedition items but the organizers are not it. I do have a 3 day pack and a day hike pouch that rides on the belt.  :like: :tu:

Excellent set and we'll used space RP  :like:

They sure look handy and well made.
But I just don't like the tools rubbing and scratching on each other all the time  :dunno:
I therefore never bought one.

This is one of the best down to Earth edc videos I've watched, and it irritated me that it had so few views. So I'll post it here and maybe it'll give you some ideas for your Maxpedition pouch. :salute:
