Title: Insterting website links into a post
Post by: Roadie on October 13, 2007, 12:15:24 AM
Firstly a few bits of jargon (not really needed but its always nice to know what stuff means)
Hyperlink = words that you can click on and they will open up a website
HTTP =  Hypertext Transfer Protocol
URL = Uniform Resource Locator
Tags = Part of the code of the software used to run the forum that tell the software what is enclosed within them. They start with [tag] and end with [/tag] common ones are [ url] and [ img]

Ok for those of you that are unaware of how to insert a hyperlink into a post here is my attempt at an easy step by step guide on how to do it!

First we need to get the URL (this is usually in the form of a http address) for the site you wish to link to. This is done by copying it from the address bar in the Internet browser of your choice you can copy it in one of 3 ways, 1) right click it with your mouse and choose copy from the list that appears 2) select all the text and press CTRL and C on the keyboard together 3) select all the text then go to the Edit menu above and click on copy.

Now we move into how to get it into a post. There are two ways of creating the link 1) using the handy button provided 2) manually. The button does save a few seconds of time but other than that its basically the same process.
When you press the button this appears in the posting box [ url] but without the space, you can just type this out manually either way it has the same effect! Now we have the [ url] tags we can put the link into them, do this by pasting the link in to one of the two places shown below. Pasting can be done by 1) right clicking the mouse in the right place and choosing paste 2) pressing CTRL and V together or 3) choose paste from the edit menu.

Place 1. [ url]www.multitool.org but without the spaces in there, this gives you www.multitool.org (http://www.multitool.org)
Place 2. [ url=www.multitool.org]Please click me! again without the space giving you this Please click me! (http://www.multitool.org)

The second method is very useful for displaying very long links (such as ebay ones).

Another handy tag to use is the [ email] ones, simply put the email address inside of the tags and people can click on it to their hearts content!

Well i think that covers it, if anyone has any questions please feel free to ask and i'm sure someone (if not me!) will be able to answer you, remember the only stupid question is the one you don't ask...even if you feel a twerp when you ask it! (and i've been there a few times!)

I also apologise if any of this sounds condescending but i had to teach my grandma to use a computer (boy was that fun!) so i may still dumb things down a bit too much.

Well here's a quick go at a movie, not sure how well it will explain things, if its useless tell me and i'll try and do a better one. It may take a while to load fully its quite big (4.4MB) due to getting a video that was still readable.

I hate to admit it, but I had no idea how to do this until Roadie pointed it out.  The only other forum I visit on a regular basis (Knifeforums.com) does this automatically, so I'd had no idea how it worked!  It was frustrating to me to not be able to do that on my own forum!

Do not feel bad I was looking for "handy button" that roadie mentioned in his how to post. I was looking everywhere for a button with a hand on it  :-[ :-[ ::). ps I found the short cut button ::)
