I have to say I've never really gotten Olympic fever.  Of course I'm not really a sports guy, so maybe that has a lot to do with it.  I don't mind watching some of it here and there but for the most part it passes largely unnoticed for me.

I imagine it'll have a bigger impact on the forum this year given the large number of UK members and the fact that it's happening in London.

I can't wait!  There are so many stories during the olympics of sacrifice, coming through as the underdog and sometimes the stories of champions you just want to see stay on top.

I hope the coverage is good.  They usually do a better job of summer olympics coverage it seems.

Currently working on a dance school show, where one of the props we are using is one of the torches used to get the flame around the country.  It is being handles VERY carefully as it has a value of £5000.

Torch came by this way recently. I kept out of the way. I just had to set off for work a bit early to make sure I didn't get too snarled up in it all :-\ Looks like a nice bit of metalwork, but there's no way I want to get snarled up in a crowd just so someone I've never heard of can trot past me holding it with a daft grin on their face expecting a round of applause and cheers for it ::)

Might be tempted to watch a bit of the opening ceremony to see what kind of a show get's put on if I can be bothered going anywhere to watch it (no TV at home), but I'll not be following the games themselves

The only event I am really interested in is the Heptathlon. Hopefully Jessica Ennis will get gold.

If they show any Taekwondo, I'll watch that as well.

I really hope it's not a shambles ::)

We're billions over budget from original projections. The road works have brought utter chaos to the city and cars have been diverted all over the place. The private "security" staff aren't trained yet; we just sacked loads of trained armed forces people due to public spending cutbacks and paid some idiots £258mil to train people without any experience. Now they are talking about calling in thousands of army personnel to cover the security needed.

Yep, getting the logic so far  >:(

However, wherever the Olympics is, I usually watch a fair bit of it. It's exciting to see excellent in any arena I think :)

Well I think it's fair to say that other than picking up my own personal share of the £100,000,000,000+ bill :o :o :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh as a UK taxpayer from direct costs and accumulated interest on the debt over the next few decades ... this little two week event will have pretty much no effect on my life, or anyone else I know. I was not one of the people celebrating when London was picked. My response was more like ....

That said ... I do hope we put on a good show, that we do our nation proud in our responsibilities as hosts, and that the event brings enjoyment and benefit to less cynical people all around the globe  :D :D :D

I generally feel pretty indifferent about the Olympics, but Im glad they aren't in Canada.  I dont like all the money wasted to build things that dont get used again.  Im looking at you BC when we did the winter Olympics.  So overall, feels like kind of a waste of money to me.  It would make more sense if they held them in the same country or location each year so keep using the same facilities.

Just heard on the radio that the US Senate and Congress are all up in arms and screaming because someone noticed that all of the United States Olympic Uniforms say "Made in China" on the tags.

Not too big on the Olympics honestly.  I'm sure I'll have it on a bit though.  I remember watching the '98 Winter Olympics on CBC at college.  Now THAT was fun.  Curling at 3am, and how the hell was Don Cherry not kicked out of Japan for those outfits?

Me.  I love the Olympics.  I liked it even more when we had to wait 4 long years to see it - like God intended.  But aside from basketball, which I think has been perverted with the usage of NBA players, I'll be watching as much as I can.

We always watch as much of the Olympics as we can, both summer and winter.  It does seem like there's no break in between them though.

I lost interest in this when I read they've built/developed a course for the mountain biking in or around London when we already have world class courses in Wales, Scotland and the N. of England.
Basically everyone in the Uk is paying for it to benefit London

Incredible amounts of money being spent when there are pensioners dying because they can't afford to pay for their heating, 20 week waiting lists for hospital scans, the country is on the bones of its *RS* .

+1 on all that :tu: I live in central London and work on the "tube" so my life will be disrupted for months and I'll be even busier at work all summer. FANS of women’s beach volleyball were distraught last night after it was revealed competitors may have to hide their curves at the Olympics.
Bad weather could deny male spectators the sight of tanned and toned athletes cavorting in bikinis.

I have cared more about the Olympics in the past than now, which I kind of ignore as possible.
Modern olympics got a bad start in first place: the whole "olympic spirit" is a disgraceful BS! When sport started to go generally pro and they finally had to admit it, it stopped to make sense.

Some of you complained about how investment was made in London: that's because Olympics mandates the organization to be at CITY level and not at country level -- it was Sydney 2000, not Australia, Atlanta 96, not USA, and so forth. That's just another hypocrisy, because it is the whole country which ends organizing and paying the event.

The opening ceremony was pretty bizarre but had some great moments.

The Olympics will probably kill off our old TV set,  doubt it will get much off time during the games.  Credit to the BBC, I think that pretty much every event will be transmitted.  So we'll probably wear out the freeview box remote as well :D

I won't be going to any of the events in person but my brother has tickets and is far too excited about it for a grown man ::) :)

It was even more bizarre here in the US what with them trying to make it look like it was happening live and then cutting parts of the ceremony.  Very strange overall...

I've always liked the Olympics, but unfortunately can't get much TV time now... I've heard our gymnast Jordan Jovchev has qualified for the finals and also that our volleyball team killed Poland and Australia and is moving forward too. At least something to compensate for our hopeless football in general :D :D

I'm crazy about Jordan Jovchev - one of my favourite all time Olympians :tu:

Looks like our women's footy team is on the way out :(

Its been a good games so far.  Today of course was a bit special but even when Team GB haven't been taking medals I've enjoyed it and sometimes surprised myself.  Never been into basketball ... before now. Funny old world :)

Congratulations to Jessica Ennis
Fantastic performance and a well deserved gold for a true beauty both inside and out.

Also great performance by Mo Farah and the ginger long jumper, he seemed a bit of a cocky git but fair play to him he earned it.
I did not see the rowing but I did see the clips of the disbelief on the faces of the young ladies who won the gold, what a picture.

I really hope Christine Ohuruogu can dig deep and does well tomorrow.

You're so right chip - nailed the day's highlights! :D

As for out Jess.... woah :salute:

Somehow for me, heptathlon and decathlon athletes impress me the most. The connection with the original spirit of the games, and being the best all round takes something special. She showed incredible emotional fortitude as well as being physically supreme.

Filed under "I live in a country full of idiots":

I was watching the news this afternoon, hearing about how great the UK is doing, and then they hand the story over to a reporter that does a short introspective on the team. Typical stuff, emotional music, quick heart warming bio's, and then she says it:

"Having faced so many financial problems recently, this just may be the turning point for the country"

We got an unexpected gold medal today. Mens trap shooting, Cernogoraz won with alsmost a perfect score. We counted on the gold in disc throw and Sandra Perkovic got it with authority. Makes me sad that Blanka Vlasic couldn't come due to health issues. She's been dominating the womens high jump for years and now had to miss the olimpics. We have high hopes for our handball and waterpolo teams. Especially after the match the handball players played against the current european champions, the Danes. :viking:

And Stanka Zlateva got at least silver today in wrestling and will go for the gold soon  :woohoo:

See how well your nation actually did!  :ahhh

http://www.medalspercapita.com/ (http://www.medalspercapita.com/)

Grenada and Jamaica are kicking behinds!!

Basically you have a better chance of getting a medal if you are from these two countries, as they got more medals per capita than the rest.

4th New Zealand. Very happy with our team. I've been waking the kids up yelling support at the tv. So worth it though.

So today I did something I usually try to avoid - watch a basketball game.  the gold medal game was a good one though, Spain certainly gave the US a run for their money, very close game right until the end.  :salute:  Afterwards I ended up watching...Water Polo.  Are there rules to water polo?  How does one get a penalty in this game, trying to drown an opposing defenseman?   The really cool thing is that the announcer was Doc Emerick, the former play by play guy for my Devils!

I saw a little bit of that water polo game too. The scoring made sense and all, but I couldn't follow some of the other rules. :P

(Congrats to Croatia by the way) :salute:

There are quite some rules to water polo, but yes, it can get brutal unterneath the water. I think Gojkan said once he played water polo so he may explain it better, or you can google it. The most important thing is we won gold at it. :) So we now have European, World and Olimpic gold in water polo. :woohoo: I wish we had managed to win the gold in handball too, but played poorly against the French in the semifinal. At least we got bronze.

Well, it's all over... been an excellent couple of weeks viewing. I will have to watch other stuff now :D

Did anyone watch the closing ceremony? Apart from the odd abhorrence (mostly Russell Brand), I thought it was a pretty good gig. Also, the big bonus of Ireland being separate meant Bono couldn't be involved like he always is in every other bloody thing! ::)

Seb Coe made a rather poignant remark while thanking everyone involved; something about the people who stood guard to keep us safe. Read: Private firm GS4 fecked up big time and our troops made sure it happened without incident instead whist giving up hard earned leave :salute:

My crush on Jessie J got more serious too - interesting choice for lead vocals with Queen, and extremely easy on the eye ;)

Yeah, post olympics depression is about right. :-\ No more sitting back in my easy chair with a beer and a bag of cheetos, watching the soccer teams play their hearts out. No more water polo, no more pole vaulting, no more long jumping. No more armchair judging the diving competition simply by how small of a splash they make. No more wondering how many times those little girls had to bang their heads on the balance beam before they got it right. No more watching the men's sprint races and trying not to see their crotch bulges. No more noticing what nice behinds and what flat chests all the women's beach volleyball players have. No more anything.

<sigh> Here's looking forward to 2016 :salute:

Not so much. The first album I ever bought myself was Venus and Mars, and I was hooked ever since.

Plus you have to admire the man's work ethic. There he was, a young man in a position to retire comfortably anywhere in the world, married to one of the richest women in the world, and without using a dime of her money he continued to work until he became one of the wealthiest men who ever lived. Even working hard to this day, (the opinion of some notwithstanding :P) with the last two concerts he performed taking in six million dollars.

Not to forget, years earlier he showed a young fellow named John, that he met at the fair, how to properly tune his guitar. Look where that led. :D

It's almost a mirror of my life...

He needs to make the money, to keep paying his ex wife, I hear...   :D

I was never really a Beatles fan; I like some of their songs but I am not a fan..

As far as I knew "Help" was a Bananarama song, since they are the ones I heard sing it first   :o

Of course for the people (http://icons.iconarchive.com/icons/jeanette-foshee/simpsons-07/32/Townspeople-Crazy-Old-Man-icon.png) that were in their teens-twenties when the Beatles were around the memories will differ..

We just got an upgrade!

Quote
Adams threw 20.70m in the shot put final at the Olympic Stadium on 6 August and was awarded silver behind the Belarusian who had taken gold with 21.36m. It was the first time Adams had been beaten by Ostapchuk in nearly two years.

Adams has been awarded the medal, after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced today that Belarus’s Nadzeya Ostapchuk, 33, was excluded from competition following a positive test for metenolone.

Gold for Valerie Adams, making New Zealand proud. :salute:
