I have to say I've never really gotten Olympic fever. Of course I'm not really a sports guy, so maybe that has a lot to do with it. I don't mind watching some of it here and there but for the most part it passes largely unnoticed for me.
I imagine it'll have a bigger impact on the forum this year given the large number of UK members and the fact that it's happening in London.

:tu: ... not here though please
Who else can't wait for this most eagerly awaited event of the year? :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

Me. I love the Olympics. I liked it even more when we had to wait 4 long years to see it - like God intended. But aside from basketball, which I think has been perverted with the usage of NBA players, I'll be watching as much as I can.
:D
Well I think it's fair to say that other than picking up my own personal share of the £100,000,000,000+ bill :o :o :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh as a UK taxpayer from direct costs and accumulated interest on the debt over the next few decades ... this little two week event will have pretty much no effect on my life, or anyone else I know. I was not one of the people celebrating when London was picked. My response was more like ....
That said ... I do hope we put on a good show, that we do our nation proud in our responsibilities as hosts, and that the event brings enjoyment and benefit to less cynical people all around the globe :D :D :D
+1 on all that :tu: I live in central London and work on the "tube" so my life will be disrupted for months and I'll be even busier at work all summer. My son is a cop and he isnt allowed any time off till September, with huge ammounts of compulsery overtime. Better be a bleeding good show for all this aggro :ahhh:D

I'll second this :tu:
I lost interest in this when I read they've built/developed a course for the mountain biking in or around London when we already have world class courses in Wales, Scotland and the N. of England.
Basically everyone in the Uk is paying for it to benefit London
Incredible amounts of money being spent when there are pensioners dying because they can't afford to pay for their heating, 20 week waiting lists for hospital scans, the country is on the bones of its *RS* .
Rediculous if you ask me :twak:
Not that I'm bitter lol...
Better be a bleeding good show for all this aggro :ahhh
Anyone else notice the "salute" when the German team walked in?

Anyone else noticed these two yesterday?? :D
The opening ceremony was pretty bizarre but had some great moments.

OK, glad to know I'm not the only one who was confused.
Looked like a great big potlatch to me.
Thanks Gareth :tu: I skipped all the athletes arriving, but otherwise I'm all caught up.The opening ceremony was pretty bizarre but had some great moments.
Yeah, I think was just about bonkers enough :D Nice to see we didn't take ourselves too seriously :P
Yeah, the Olympics have totally taken over all news here as well. We're less than a week in and even I (as a general sports fan) am feeling a little overloaded. :-\
Help with understanding beach voleyball signals, so that the sport can be enjoyed better ....

Wow, did not even realize they had their hands back there
Yes, I was lucky enough to watch some nice young ladies in their bikinis play voleyball this evening at the beach and none of them made any hand signals...

Did you watch real close just to make sure? ;)
Gold for the Men's Sprint Cyclists! :woohoo:
I've always liked the Olympics, but unfortunately can't get much TV time now... I've heard our gymnast Jordan Jovchev has qualified for the finals and also that our volleyball team killed Poland and Australia and is moving forward too. At least something to compensate for our hopeless football in general :D :D
Well that was quite a day for team GB. :o Also kudos to Michael Phelps going out on an excellent high.
You're so right chip - nailed the day's highlights! :D
As for out Jess.... woah :salute:
Somehow for me, heptathlon and decathlon athletes impress me the most. The connection with the original spirit of the games, and being the best all round takes something special. She showed incredible emotional fortitude as well as being physically supreme.
See how well your nation actually did! :ahhh4th New Zealand. Very happy with our team. I've been waking the kids up yelling support at the tv. So worth it though.

Grenada and Jamaica are kicking behinds!!
Basically you have a better chance of getting a medal if you are from these two countries, as they got more medals per capita than the rest.
Yeah, post olympics depression is about right. :-\ No more sitting back in my easy chair with a beer and a bag of cheetos, watching the soccer teams play their hearts out. No more water polo, no more pole vaulting, no more long jumping. No more armchair judging the diving competition simply by how small of a splash they make. No more wondering how many times those little girls had to bang their heads on the balance beam before they got it right. No more watching the men's sprint races and trying not to see their crotch bulges. No more noticing what nice behinds and what flat chests all the women's beach volleyball players have. No more anything.
<sigh> Here's looking forward to 2016 :salute:
Team GB Don't Stop Me NowHow many dudes you know row like this...
Broadly I did enjoy it. :) Sadly Suggs seems to not be able to sing any more. :-\

He was a lot better than Sir Paul at the opening gig - time to retire with some dignity intact me thinks ::)

Blasphemy!
Sir James Paul McCartney, the most successful composer and recording artist of all time, could beat screaming cats against a block of wood and still sound better than any other performer.
:viking:
:D
I'll take a wild stab Paul and guess that your mom was a big Beatles fan even before you were born? ;) :D
Adams threw 20.70m in the shot put final at the Olympic Stadium on 6 August and was awarded silver behind the Belarusian who had taken gold with 21.36m. It was the first time Adams had been beaten by Ostapchuk in nearly two years.
Adams has been awarded the medal, after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced today that Belarus’s Nadzeya Ostapchuk, 33, was excluded from competition following a positive test for metenolone.
