Many thanks, Max!
The collection is mostly geared towards brand and model diversity. There are a few tools that compelled me to acquire differing variations, but overall diversity makes it extra fun. :)
I am looking forward to seeing what you find this year, as I really enjoy reading your posts!

Thanks, Nick!

It did take a considerable amount of time to set up. :ahhh
Five hours, a straight edge, racking the brain for arrangement ideas, nitrile gloves to avoid finger acid contamination, cleaning rags, and patience with the old digital camera on a tripod. Never could get the lighting right for every tool to look proper. :ahhh
Should be a great year for additions. Hoping to find a Paladin PT-540 this year, among many others.  :multi:

Thank you, Chako!

I must admit, that when I first joined MT.o, your collection inspired many of the "to get lists" for my own collection.  Later on I started basing my purchases on estimated availability and current cost. But, every now and then, I go to your collection threads to find inspiration for the next tool to seek and acquire.  :salute:

The Multi Tool Alcove is finally shaping up. I've managed to get almost everything within arms reach with this setup. Before everything was scattered all over the house. :ahhh
The room needs some minor spackle and paint, but has a great built in desk with shelving above. I'll fill and stain it eventually, but as far as a multi-tool layer, it is great.
The only MTs not within arms reach are some of the fixed pliers, which are in a smallish box, but will need to find a reasonable place to put it.

On the right is a wood organizer on top of the main MT chest. For now it holds the Victorinox, Bear & Sons, and Small Gerber tools in varying storage containers.

On the floor is a tackle box with a bunch of MTs in it as well. To the left is a computer I built in 2010/2011. The power supply burned up in 2014, so I put it away in the closet. Moved back home and just recently dug it out and installed a new 500W power supply. Luckily the motherboard and HDDs were fine.  :woohoo:

Runs very very well, which was a pleasant surprise. Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition 2.8GHz, ASUS M3A79 Board, 8GB DDR2, 1GB DDR3 Nvidia GTS250. I had forgotten how nice it was to surf a forum with a desktop computer instead of my cheap phone.

Thank you much, AW!

Indeed, a lot of cool tools get overlooked for modern carry. The Balance, BG Strata, and TT are great tools. IMO).

Truth be told, I have never been big on carrying SAKs outside of the Explorer(I do have two backups for the one pictured). I have carried the same Explorer(now with new SilverTech scales) for 15 years and cannot really see EDC'ing another model SAK. It does the lightweight stuff I need a SAK to do(good scissors, mag glass, backup screwdrivers(in case I am using the MT pliers), awl, and clean blades. The corkscrew gets some odd tasks sometimes.

The Explorer is always supplemental to the pliers-based MTs on my belt/in my pocket.
Now, as far as collecting, I enjoy the different toolsets and styles of SAKs(particularly the 91mm class). The good fit and finish are appealing as well.  :)

The Balance is a user for me too, as was the BG Strata till I robbed it for parts  :-[

Point taken on the Explorer too. I have one which is destined for surgery, but can't decide whether to just transfer the Phillips, or the mag glass too. It was just going to be the Phillips, until I got it and gave it some carry time (first time with a newer magnifier). The Swiss knives do play a larger role for me, as you can see in my long winded thread here...

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,80625.0.html

... but that's because a lot of my carry options are knifeless. Regional cultural differences play a part too. I also like "spreading the load", rather than expecting one tool to do everything I might want. Combos are what serves be best, though I do have a couple of "single tool solutions"

Impressive that you stuck with the same one for that long.  :tu: I've settled in regards of not wanting to find more, but am still planning to tweak things a little through modding

Will definitely be perusing the linked thread soon.

I understand the desire to always make something better. It helps that the Explorer tool loadout is nearly ideal as a supplemental tool for me. But, as most everything else, there are many different needs from varying people. And I commend your quest to achieve the tool you envision. SAK modding is one of the things I have yet to undertake, but can see myself possibly attempting at some point in the future.

Indeed the cultural differences shape some part, large or small, of our carrying habits. I carry large folders often, but do understand that they are not necessary to carry out my everyday cutting duties. I can't even say I would bother reaching for the folding knife in a self-defense situation. So why carry one?
Definitely a cultural thing around where I live, as it is something most men my age do. I like collecting well made gear as well, but that is beyond the cultural reasoning for sure. I don't have much in common with people my age where I live, but the knives are always something they like to hear about. Some people even buy the same knives I carry for themselves, which increases the chances of an interesting conversation. Last example being my CRKT Klecker designed Graphite.

Part of the reason I love the Explorer and Mr. Pinchy is that I carried both, along with a 1988 2xAAA Maglite, for so long. And they were carried a long time before my interest in MTs and knives ramped up. An odd gear-Stockholm syndrome, if that makes any sense. It is known I have better SAKs, but chose to only carry the same old Explorer, even with its' corroded liners, stiff tools and botched can-opener/driver.

The Mr. Pinchy is slightly different, as the necessity to "upgrade" became blatantly apparent over time(needed more driver options, replaceable cutters, and less palm pinching). However, that being the EDC case, I have transferred the obsession with the Pinchy over to collecting them. I have 13 Mr. Pinchy versions so far.

Anyway, I apologize for the rambling. It's one of the few habits I cannot seem to kick. :ahhh

Thanks for the observations and insights into your collecting and carry habits GLBM. I’m sure that all forum members that invest even a little time here share a level of interest in EDC, with a selection of flashlights, MTs, SAKs, etc. My weekday EDC varies from my weekend EDC, and that too changes when on vacation, and I find that trying what works for other people is a good way to experiment for my own needs. A good example is that I always thought “more is better” with SAKs, going for 4 or more layers, but then hardly carrying them because of the bulk. Trying a 2-layer Alox on a belt clip suspension lanyard has been a relavation and I can now appreciate why this is such a popular choice. But it’s because of MTO that I’ve gained these insights.  :tu:

You are quite welcome, Max.

Indeed this is probably the only site with such a serious emphasis on EDC gear. That is why I enjoy being a member so much. Our EDCs aren't status-motivated or fashion-oriented. We tend to gravitate to logical/enjoyable conclusions for our carries. It is great you have found a companion knife in the 2-layer Alox. I've considered carrying an Alox, but am steadfast stubborn about the Explorer.

Your approach to early MTs has been quite refreshing, and I appreciate your historical-emphasis in regards to the classics.  :)

Hmmm. I am not 100% certain, because the structure wouldn't be strong enough to be fully loaded with screws/nuts/bolts. Maybe craft stuff, like beads and whatnot?

Or maybe, it was originally made for storing keychain sized multi tools. :D

I am sure Sheffield went the way of Winchester many years ago. Brand names and trademarks sold off to some super-production factory in China. Not the good Chinese factories, like Ganzo, but the type of factories that make SAK copies with no heat-treat on the metal.

A quick Google turned up some comments on other knife forums. Definitely nothing to do with Sheffield, England. Just another Chinese brand using a known name to impress prospective customers.

There’s actually a formal accreditation to claim made in Sheffield today:

There was a video where a guy copper plated his Free P. But, he didn't have enough torx bits(you just need 2x T8...lol) and dipped the whole thing in, elastomer and all. It did look good though, when he finished.
I would love to see some anodized handles in red, blue, and/or green. A BO version would be cool, but the Free would be costly to effectively work with an oxidized layer on the tools.
Edit: Just realized that anodizing the 420HC handles on the Free wouldn't be very durable. They would be best with a plating of some sort. Gold would be striking, if a bit obnoxious. The guy's copper plate was cool too, but that just tarnishes(though some people like that).

Agreed. You are expanding nicely. I just scored a Gerber Center Drive today. Now I think I may need to get myself some of those Leatherman Free models someday.
Thank you, Chako!

Nice one getting the CD. One heck of a neat tool and a serious update to the MP line. Though the 600 is still king, the CD fits some user's needs better. :)

The Free series is quite nice. If you are testing the waters, the P4 is the one to get first. IMO anyway. :)

The I-Tool and L-Tool are the coolest junky tools I've bought in a while. :)
The I-Tool's blatant misuse of the LM Wave design is hilarious. They even made a mechanism(using the tabbed fork to raise a stud in the thumb hole) that looks like the Wave's blade lock system, but it doesn't actually work.

With the Free; it looks muy plastique; but given the new opening/lock mechanism, I am sure it is a thousand times better than the old Crater line.
Title: Re: The GLBM MultiTool Collection 2019
Post by: gerleatherberman on July 11, 2019, 04:14:57 AM
The T4 definitely feels more solid than the pictures show. The plastic mostly just hides the tools on the other side and holds the tweezers.
Like you said, it makes it look plastique, and I would have preferred aluminum shields, but we got what LM went with. :ahhh
That said, the T4 is probably a serious contender for tool of the year IMO. :)

Post by: cody6268 on July 17, 2019, 04:34:03 AM
You gotta be kidding me--they make a hammer version of the nano Toolclip copy?  That's even more useless than the regular one. I doubt there's enough weight to even tap in something like a finishing nail. As a kid, one of the first MTs I bought was a Totes, a full sized Toolclip clone with a hammer. I still have it to this date. It's been in every toolbox I've owned since I had the tool. I kept a regular one that I'd found in a junk drawer in the basement (apparently thrown in there from a lot buy because it was a POS to me) on the key to the cabinet where I keep some of my electrical connectors and such; and tried it once. It was too small to really do anything with.

Seeing as that Commercial Electric has automatic pliers, I think I might need to pick one up next time I need to order something from Home Depot.

How are the early Multimasters compared to newer ones? I have found the steel in mine are super soft--they can't cut most hard wire without being damaged.  I actually dinged cutters on both the two I kept as users cutting stuff most LMs handle like nothing.
Title: Re: The GLBM MultiTool Collection 2019
Post by: gerleatherberman on July 17, 2019, 05:54:46 AM
I honestly think the old cutters are just as soft as the newer ones. Strange since the pliers seem like strong steel that doesn't ding very easily. Perhaps they ground the cutters after heat treat and accidentally annealed them a bit. :dunno:

As far as the rest of the tool is concerned, the old ones are slightly better with respect to the fit & finish. The new ones look and feel a bit cheaply machined, while the older ones look and feel like they were perfected by someone who cared.

I like the older ones, because the pliers jaws are two seperate pieces that can be loosened and tightened with the screw. That does help getting the cutters to act a bit more effectively.  :)

Super impressive GLBM  :like: I will have to open the pics on my PC to explore your collection in detail.

I’m at the point of needing some better storage options as I’ve currently got several bags and boxes with my SAKs and MTs spread around...not ideal. I like Chako’s usage of a tool chest with draws. Have to look into that option... still a very long way off the quantities listed by him or even yours. There are collections, collections, and then collections!

The pictures didn't turn out as well as I had hoped. Used a tripod without flash, but the lighting was still poor.  :ahhh

The watchmaker's toolchest is still my favorite. It holds a lot of tools and looks more like furniture than a toolbox. But, a toolbox is needed in my case these days. Chako told me when I first started complaining about storage to get one. Probably should have done that instead of buying so many smaller borderline-useless storage containers.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for storage, Max!

It has definitely expanded a bit. Started watching and concentrating on tools that were trending low week to week. Paid off quite well. :)

Not sure we need to know the weight of the collection yet.
Though it would be funny if we could weigh the MT collections.  I think Chako's collection has something to do with the planetary tilt being a bit off.  :D
