Title: The Genus Owners Thread
Post by: AHB on May 22, 2010, 12:03:42 AM
Thanks to Dan (cerbera147) for providing the link to Amazon.de (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,19105.msg371370.html#msg371370), I just got the LM Genus in the mail yesterday.  8)
Not only is the Genus an incredible piece of engineering, I also got it for 1/3 of the Danish retail price..  :ahhh
The Fit and finish of the tool is just perfect, so it would be a shame actually using it..  ;)
Oh, and thanks to DaveK & Bob for pushing me over the edge with their praise too.. Here's the link to Bob's review: Click (http://www.multitool.org/leatherman-tool-group/large-tools/leatherman-genus.html)..  :tu:

I had a friend over to take a look at the MT/SAK collection. He loves gardening and is always out in his back yard doing something with plants. Well he fell in love with the Genus right away and ignored the other two twig cutters. It certainly means business.

Congrats to all you fellow Genus admirers! :salute: I still maintain that this is the best built multitool ever. I could go on and on about how great it is. :)

need some compound leverage on that head to really snap through those branches.

Have to cast a wide net to catch all :D

It'll be in my hands soon! I even managed to get myself a couple of those diamond coated wrenches. I also picked up a new Felco blade for it.

Time to myself a new skinth Quick Draw.

That's what I am looking forward to doing with it.....well...sorta. I am more excited to take it apart, customize the handle tools, maybe get some parts cerakoted so it's a little less austere.

Maybe some acid green or orange.

I am just really excited to get my holy grail of MTs!

How does the Genus compare to geared cutters, which I would assume use compound leverage?

And apart from gardening, does it have any other uses with the cutter?

Most gear cutters are larger and have longer handles. I have a few sets and they are wonderful.

Anything involving hoses or tubing the genus shines. Cutting zip ties too since you can get the anvil underneath it quite easily.

May I ask why it is your holy grail? It does strike me as odd that for someone who does so much modding, a niche tool like this is the grail.

It's is exactly that point. I can recreated nearly any load out or model of tool in the line up (and in some cases, atypical lay outs) but the Genus is unique in its application, design and quality.

I will never, in my life time, be able to build or manufacture such a product.

Since its discontinuation the hunt was also half the fun, not saying my collection is complete but a MT of this magnitude only comes around once and a while.

As your already stated, I am a modded at heart, and the plans are already in place to replace the inner tools with my own liking and sending some of the chassis to get cerakoted.

I enjoy using high end tools a lot and not often am I able to afford them :)

Well, I finally wrangled one from eBay back in May this year and I have to say...it was TOTALLY worth it.  This is a tool I can honestly say I am completely satisfied with.  Used, but still - pricewise, a LOT better than what [ahem] some people are selling old stock new for [try $200].

It really does cut better than any pruner I've ever owned.  That and LM really worked out both the quality and design - in particular the ergonomics.  It is a seriously comfortable tool to use all day long.  Most tools like this need some kind of padding, but there's something about the Genus that just simply...rules.  Not blowing smoke.  Between the tool itself, the incredibly well designed tools-in-the-swiveling-handle, the way it fits in its sheath, to its operation...this thing is a mutha.   >:D

The individual I bought it from -- I had to ask him after the fact if he'd left it out in the rain.  Not a big deal, as it turned out.  Found by chance a new Fein spring set and with a little clean up - it doesn't look brand new, but now used - but taken care of.  A little sharpening, a little micro lube.  Pretty much all set.

I do have a question though.  The swiveling handle is a little loosey goosey.  When you're using the pruner, it's virtually unnoticeable, but it is loose.  I tried getting other washers to either replace or add to the one at the top of the handle, but no luck.  Has anyone had this problem and done anything successfully to fix??

Anyway, I honestly look forward to using this great tool in the yard every time I go out.  Well done, LM!

Oh - a before and after pic:

This tool is a thing of beauty.

You gotta swap that blade out for a Felco #2....amazing! Best $15 upgrade you'll do.

I bought mine at Lee Valley.

There is a hex bolt (very small) located on the backside of the handle release button. If its not damaged, heat that sucker up and use a tight fitting hex key. That bolt holds both the button in and the handle.

There is a slight bit of play on mine as well as the recent prototype Genus I bought. Like you said..nothing really to worry about.

Hey, thanks Metro; I appreciate your reply.  Haven't tried your fix [or the Felco], but will definitely give it a go.

Also - like your idea of the cerakote finish.  The handles on mine are somewhat beat up - so, that's not a bad idea at all.  Any reason you're not doing it yourself??  I have no clue how crappy it could turn out if I did it myself.  Complicated process?

Thanks again.

Quite complicated, while I maybe able to do a decent job, sometimes its easier to leave it to the professionals. It first gets shot with 100 grit media to even out the surface and remove any dirt etc, then it gets hit with a HVLP spray of cerakote and Jeff even goes in with an airbrush on those small hard to reach areas. Then it goes into an controlled oven for a predetermined amount of time.

It doesn't SOUND hard but if you saw his shop...it's quite an operation. The media blasting alone is worth the money!

I think black for the handles and acid green for the chassis, but last night I thought maybe I could go with Sentry Grey or something instead of black.

Used the Reaper in an atypical fashion. Beerplumber once told me that he used bypass shears to cut tubing for installs. Worked great on this piece of garden hose to extended the suction pipe on our new turtle aquarium.

You're going down a slippery slope there, Metro.  A GENUS for cutting garden hose...my, my-oh-my...

And - why are you barefoot using your Genus??  Clearly two violations in one shot.  Perhaps time for a Genus rescue from your house/shop me thinks...

i haven't checked out your fix yet, but I am still having just busloads of fun pruning.  So much so, in fact, that Genus is going on a little roadtrip with me and dog...to 'fix' all of the low-hanging branches-over-sidewalks that peoplez just can't bring themselves to cut.  Yeah - watch me!!

Pruners are pruners, I pruned a hose...so what? :)

Also...I have been doing that exact thing for a bit now...low hanging eye pokers I say.

Added the Felco blade to Genus the other day.  I have to say, doing the pruning on the dogwalk is much faster and obviously then, much more stealthily covert.  You can't even say 'hit and run' - cuz no one even knows I was there.  It is AMAZING how little [to none] people prune the overhanging branches on their trees.  Shouldn't we have a National Prune Your Damned Tree Day??  It could coincide with National Talk Like a Pirate Day...

Next up is a sapling growing from an existing tree that is almost totally blocking the PUBLIC sidewalk.  Genus saw?  Do your stuff!  [Insert maniacal laugh here...]   >:D

Furthering 'repair' will be a [probably] non-cerakote paint job...as I believe cerakoting is rather expensive.  Some kind of paint one of the big box stores tells me is good for anodized aluminum.  I'm a little excited!   :multi:

Anyone with paint ideas for other than cerakote?

I don't trust any other coating besides Cera now. I am going to plasti-dip the non tool handle for a more shock absorbing grip. It also comes in spray can which is much thinner but is just as grippy!

Plasti-dip isn't a bad idea.  Hmmm.  What, may I ask, are you planning on spending for a cera paint job, then?  I'm morbidly curious and somewhat ashamed that I'm thinking of my beloved Genus as simply $$$... :-[

Eh...btw...is there somewhere on the forum et. al. that shows an ultra maroon, such as myself, how to quote - without quoting the entire previous post??  It's like rocket science for pete's sake!

you mean like this?  :)

just hit the "quote" link on the post that you want to quote, then simply delete the text you don't want.  as long as you leave the quote blocks in place (the ones surrounded by [] brackets), the quote should show up fine.  :tu:

I have a friend (Jeff Forbush) who takes care of me. It could be anywhere from $30-70 but it's guaranteed not to fade or tarnish. It's as strong as the substrate so on aluminum it's OK on steel it's just the best.

Well, quotes' advice worked just fine - thanks.

Yeah; I got lucky for $85 on eBay.  All I did was used a saved search [an option they offer]...which, in turn, sent me an email when something matching went for sale.  Best of luck.  Don't know if I'd do 'two bills' for even a Genus.  Well -- brand new does make a difference.

I'll keep watching ebay, like I have been.  (I also use the saved searches.)  this last one that I saw was new-in-package, but still... like you said, I don't think I could justify two bills for a Genus.  :-\

The funny thing is, I bought one for my mother as a birthday present a few years ago (when they were still in production), but never bothered to get one for myself.

why are all the amazing leatherman pruners discontinued?  why?

This boggles my mind as well. There are no other quality options out there for multi tool, or folding pruning shears out there.

I don't understand how LM could abandon the investment in the tooling they made for these products...

Went out pruning again today with the dog; a qualified victory.  Limited by ability to get up & get going; arrival of the dawn made real covert-like mission untenable.  Will try again tomorrow.  Guard Duck signing off, sir!

Metro - have you sent yours out for its cerakote...or is pruning season just coming up for you?

Btw, trying to think of a quality name for mine here...with hyper-limited success.  Closest I've come is "Mike" - you know - after that fine 80's b-movie, "Volunteers".  'Well, frankly Beth - Mike and I don't like what were hearin'.'  I guess you had to see it.  Hanks, Candy...Gedde Watanabe - Fake Thailand...Commies, Druglords - come on!   :D

Will try a little harder at name for Genus.

A few select online shops carry really old stock. I managed to find 2 on Amazon and Breezy helped me ship the whole bundle to me.

They are pretty damn great. I STILL haven't had time to take apart my Reaper and take it into cerakote.

reviving this thread because I finally get to join this club! :woohoo:

I actually managed to score TWO Genuses (Genii?) within a couple days of each other -- the first one is NIB, the second is a user. the former went straight into my collection, and the latter needs a little cleaning, but is otherwise in good shape. the saw is slightly bent, but I discovered that the internal blade/saw/Phillips are the same tools as on the Core/ST300. I have some parts from a disassembled Core in my parts stash, so replacing the saw will be a piece of cake. :tu:

I was doing some yardwork today, so I installed a new Felco blade on the user Genus and took it outside... where it was promptly stolen by my wife.

We-he-he-ell...congrats on finally joining the club!  Can you hear the party favors and feel the confetti hitting your head?  Or is that just the bar I'm in currently [not]?  Good for you; and two [2] to boot!  A little jealous on the twofer, but honestly am happy I have one at all.

Now, with all due respect...I must say that your wife obviously needs to be punished on some level or another.  Clearly unacceptable.   :D

Well, I've been using mine quite a bit this season.  When using another pruner on occasion, it just leaves me with this empty feeling.

I have the store-bought goods yet to refurb my Genus, but have not had the time either.  Redoing a roll-top desk and trying to install new bath sinks...I hope I can do it before the next season hits.

Well, didja?   :D

Threw my back out -- now I can't finish my stupid bath sink nightmare...nor can I do any pruuuuuning with my lovely Genus, still called 'Mike' [until more creative thinking can replace].  Mother pussbucket!

What's the term I want to use?  I don't know, how about, 'I've got a flying mouse to kill - and I want to clean my claws...'.   >:(

I did have a chance to clean up the user for myself us her. I completely disassembled the Genus (handle tools and all), scrubbed everything down, replaced the bent saw with a new-ish saw from a Core, re-installed the new Felco blade, and finished it off with a new Felco handle spring and a good oiling. :tu:

I agree; it truly is the best set of pruners I've ever used.  I still want to max them out a little with various paints I've bought, but haven't had the time.  But I digress.  I wonder - did the diplomatic team that met up with LM @ LM HQ ever ask anyone [oh, I don't know - say...Tim Leatherman] why - flipping WHY they discontinued this fine product?  I don't get it, I don't get it...   ::)

I can't share my beloved LM tools with she-who-can't-clean-her-tools.  I've got enough hoops to jump through and I don't get a real respect-the-tool vibe from her either.  Perhaps I should start shopping around?   :D

Or perhaps be more on topic.  In that vein, I found that - unfortunately - I had to re-peen the pin holding in all the folding tools in the handle.  I don't know if anyone else has had that problem with a Genus, but the pin kept slipping out, so it had to be done.  Also, there's play - not side to side, but where the two handles are a bit loosey goosey at the close.  Play as in movement even with the lock on.  So, I've got to shore that up.  I don't know that it's the previous owner's fault, but he obviously didn't care for them.  I asked him if he'd left them out in the rain or something and...he said he had.  That doesn't speak to the play, probably more to the fact that he actually used them a bit...uh, before he left them out in the rain.

Hey, wait...perhaps he should go bowling with my significant other.  Hmmmm... :-X

And thanks for the back comment...will be going to the back store soon.  Right after I get in line over at the brains store.   :salute:  I appreciate it.

:salute:  I appreciate it.

my wife kind of takes care of her tools... but at least she has the good sense to ask me to clean/oil/sharpen them for her when necessary. :D

sorry to hear about the problems with your Genus. :( at least it sounds like you were able to resolve the issues. I think I got lucky with the used Genus I scored; other than some dirt and grime and the bent saw, it's in great shape. :tu: everything locks up rock solid, no play anywhere, and no signs of rust from the previous owner when I was cleaning it up.

not to make light of your situation, but your "brain store" comment immediately made me think of this scene:

hope your back is on the mend soon, buddy. ;)

Ah; so you have a wife with some sense.  What's that like??   >:D

Well, I feel lucky to even have a Genus...and 'Mike' and I definitely spend some quality time together.  Eh, so I can't complain.

Young Frankenstein - definitely.  A classic.  Did I mention my real name is actually Abby Normal?  Because if you think of it that way, it all...starts...to make...sense...

P.S. Hopefully, I can post some refurb pics here - you know, within a 'reasonable' amount of time. By then, maybe Metro will have his done too, n'est-ce pas??

SWEEEET Congrats guys, I have been using mine like CRAZY since I picked up making slingshots out of natural wood. I can't be without mine for any more than a couple of days. I'll likely send mine in the winter when I don't have any natural forks to harvest. This year was crazy, 3 maple trees, an apple tree and a lilac were all downed on my property which means my Reaper had it's day in the woods!

The Felco blades are JUST showing their wear now, but thanks to Breezy, I have the correct diamond file to take care of that :)

Hey there, Metro.  Dare I ask...actually, I shudder to ask [given my spending habits] - what diamond file is that, kind sir?   ::)  I shouldn't ask - because I've got a Corona sharpener [http://coronatoolsusa.com/ac-8300-sharpening-tool.html] I've been using with some success [and that's really saying something...] on the Felco blade.  Yet still, here I sit on my brains...asking...  :D

Vive Le Genus!

he's referring to the diamond file/wrench combo tool (http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,46628.msg761076.html#msg761076) that was sold with the Genus when they were still in production. ;)

sadly, they're pretty much impossible to find these days. :( oddly enough, my NIB Genus did not have one, but the user did.

Thanks.  Well, I have yet to be able to figure out how to sharpen any blade in that manner.  Perhaps I should start looking at some YouTube.  The Corona thing seems to work for the truly limitless limited skillset, which includes me.  Never say never, though.   :tu:

It's the infamous Leatherman file/wrench combo. It came with the NIB Genus, it was also available for sale separately.

I found two on Amazon and Breezy helped me.

Thanks Poncho , it was pure luck that I found it. I googled "GENUS" and opened every link, most of them gave me the message not available or sold out. After many hours I found it in a store in the US who were cleaning out there old stuff and the found a genus without box in there storage room so they put it for sale on there website. I wrote an email and they immediately replied to me (it was $75) so I bought it right away.  :hatsoff:

This was a painful club to join in 2023.  This thing made the ARC seem cheap.
