High blood pressure runs in my family so I'm a high risk for heart disease and heart attacks no matter what I do.  Giving up smoking is always a good plan though.  While I've never been a smoker myself, I have seen the change it's brought about in lots of people around me, including my father, who is healthier now in his late 60's than he was in his mid forties.

Best of luck to you, and if there's anything at all we can do to help, just let us know- we are all here for you!

My former boss used a prescription pill to quit smoking, I just don't remember what it was.  It worked great for him.

I quit smoking almost 6 months ago and I feel much better, I cold turkey but a friend of mine that has been smoking for 40 years also used prescription pill and they worked like a charm, the only downside is that the pills a very expensive.

John, best of luck. You have a hard time in front of you but in the end you will make it.

BP before  140 / 105

stopped smoking cigars
lost 90 pounds
rode my bike 30 minutes  every other day
ate red meat  3x a month ( 10th - 20th 30th )

BP now  105 / 70

BP started to drop first 30 days - took almost a year to drop the 90 pounds - down now to 235 lbs

I still have 30 more pounds to lose according to the Dr.

Good luck with quitting smoking mate.  It can be a tough road but its well worth it.  One thing that's proven to work is smoking cessation meetings with an advisor.  I've recently worked on a respiratory team and had close contact with a smoking cessation team who had fantastic results in an area of south wales where smoking and lung disease is rife.

Stopping smoking alone may not help your BP (blood pressure) to go down, but it could do.  More importantly it'll be good for you in several other ways.  Smoking is a major risk factor in a stupidly high number of diseases, so even if your BP does not improve you'll be better off.

Hope it works for you mate :tu:

Let's not forget that while pills, patches and gum can help, they can't make you quit smoking.  If they could, there would be very few smokers left.  These things are there to help you do it, not do it for you.  A friend of mine has tried many different types of ways of quitting smoking, but she isn't smart enough to realize that she has to make up her mind not to do it.

I smoked for almost 40 years, and after about the 100th time, stopped cold turkey in May of 1996,the main thing to remember is it only takes one to restart,I used a bic pen cut off to 100mm size, drilled hole in the end,and put cotton inside, carried and used it for several months, but it worked for me,and ate a lot of peppermint candy,Good Luck!!!

Lost my Grandpa to emphysema two years ago.Took over ten
years before it finally killed him.My Grandpa loved the outdoors and
for the last seven years of his life, he could not even go outside for over
five minutes at a time.

Really tough to watch someone be virtually trapped in their own body.
My wife quit smoking cold turkey after having to watch what could
happen to her.

Smoking sucks don't do it. :D

Those are some real readings.  It's always the right time to quit smoking.  Seriously bad for your health. If stopping smoking doesn't lower your BP, you will need some meds.  A little HTZ (hydrochlorothiazide).

Definitely get on this.  Those numbers would do damage (kidney, heart, atherosclerosis)

Just a short update..:
Monday morning I didn't have any cigarettes and decided not to buy another packet.. :)
So I'm now on my 36'th hour without smoking, but I did buy some Nicotine gum. I only have chewed a few pieces until now,
so everything goes very well..   ;) :D

There is something special with the first smoke of the day, in my case if I didn’t have the first smoke in the wee hours of the day I had an easier time staying away from the cigarettes. But the hardest part for me was to stay away from the smoke when having a beer, it’s no stress now but it sure was when I just stopped.

Good job on not having a smoke so far Allan and best of luck to all you guys.

Hi guys and well done Allan "three weeks" :salute:

Sorry but I could not do it without some help  :(

I now have my prescription and have signed for a twelve week course at my local clinic the date set now is Wednesday 21st to quit  :tu:

Here's my nicotine replacement therapy for two weeks man! by the looks of it I'll be as high as a kite for the next two weeks  :ahhh

BTW the prescription is free for the whole twelve week course  :tu: I have the patches and the inhalator  ;)
Thanks, John and good for you that you stick with the plan...  :salute:
I gotta say that I did quit 7 months last year (Why the heck did I start again..?)  and here on my third week I'm still chewing 4-5 pieces of  nicotinegum a day.. Along the way I ought to cut back on the chewing, or I'll end up with a jaw like Arnold.. :o
A good advice is to EDC a great MT to play with so you keep your hands busy... My Recaro Sideclip from Chris (Magicbus) has been doing wonders.. :D  :D
Oh, yeah... And spend all your money on tools so you can't afford smoking...  ;)
Keep us posted on your progress.. :)

Good luck John  :tu:

It doesn't matter what helps as long as it does. Will power alone is a tough option for most people  :-\
You should be enormously proud of yourself for even trying to get this done.

I'm still smoking, albeit not a lot these days and I wish I didn't like it... ridiculous thing to do to yourself!

Thanks guys  :tu:

Yes Allan I carry my CT-41 lots to keep my hands busy ironically that's maybe why I got it from Neil,

I plan to get back to some hill walking I stress walking as I'm no spring chicken, not like in my youth when I could run the full stretch of the Malvern hills, scout pacing Snowdonia, running a full 26 miles and walking 40 miles of the Pennines on top of that I used to walk the 20 miles to Birmingham from where I live, that said these days I find a tuft of grass a mountain to climb  :ahhh :ahhh  :D

nuphoria I do hope you can find it in yourself to quit I wish you well what ever you decide  :tu:

No it isn't really hard to purchase anything new  ;) the only problem is they are so expensive there for example i paid 11000 forint's (60USD) for my new GAK. and a simple Swisstool without sheath and any kind of plus costs 20000-21000 forint's (100-110 USD)

I'm into my sixth week and I can also report my BP has gone down to 156/93 still a little high but hey! that's without meds  ;)

Apparently when I had my carbon monoxide levels checked at the start they were 35% which by all accounts having blood using only 90 oxygen, which would explain some raise in blood pressure so I'm told it's now 2%  :D

oh I should have said my BP doesn't go to 170/100 any more which was the official reading,I think I said 170+/90+
 in my first post  ;)

I haven't used my nicotine e-cig thing for a week due to the flu, but I'm not really missing the smoking thing right now anyway. It's all about your state of mind to it I guess.

Yes, bizarrely good! They are strange, but a damn site better than the toxic alternative.

Allen, believe me I know! I have given up a few times over the years, for up to a year at a time... just not very good at staying away long term.
