Title: Camper Challenge!
Post by: Barry Rowland on May 03, 2018, 08:44:02 PM
I have never hosted a Challenge before, but seeing as we're getting into the prime camping and outdoors season (at least here in the northern hemisphere) I'd like to propose a Camper Challenge.  To the best of my knowledge, there's no badge dedicated to Vic's wonderful answer to being prepared for almost anything outdoors, I'd love to give this a go!  To give anyone interested a chance to get one if they don't already have one, I'm looking at a kickoff date of May 14 and a tentative end date of June 13th.  The rules are pretty relaxed, as I know that sometimes you just need a pair of scissors or a set of pliers.  Any interest?

This with the PS4 is listed among my best light carry combinations. Between the two, you have everything you need in such a small, light package. Alternatively the Farmer.

Good idea, Barry. I have a newer one in red nylon scales. Good choice for outdoors where a scissors is less handy than a knife and saw.

I just sharpened the blades, oiled the joints, and polished the scales on my Camper, so it is chomping at the bit to participate in the Camper Challenge.......as a matter of fact I am going to go ahead and start carrying it in preparation. :D

I'll be carrying el early 80's Camper w/ inlay.  I had replaced the back scale with a plus scale for a while... but have recently switched it back to the old solid scale..  mostly because the red on the back plus scale was a slightly different shade, not solid like the original, and it just seemed a bit off... to add an optiong I should probably get a new camper and put on some white or yellow plus scales... or translucent green...

I'm going to carry the one you sent me El C for most of the challenge.  I love that Camping inlay!  I really like this tool set.  A couple years back, my son Noah's Hiker saved the day for us when we were out on the Appalachian trail and had to build a fire.  Old Dad was woefully unprepared with only the mighty Minichamp in tow.  One of the few times I wasn't packing a Vic with a saw.

And as I recall you went on a more recent trip with scouts armed with the Climber, putting el hook to use!  The Camper needs a hook!!!  :ahhh

I don't have a Camper. I've got a Ranger but rather than go clandestine and call it a Camper Plus I'm going to sit this one out. Honestly Barry encouraging rule breaking in your own challenge  I'm still enjoying EDC rotation too much after the PX Challenge.

Good luck everyone I shall enjoy being in the audience

This challenge ought to be doable.  :salute:
I don't have a Camper, but I know this SAK very well.

My father didn't do a 30 day challenge with it, but rather a 30 year challenge  :D, he bought his Camper in '82 IIRC and it was his one and only SAK for all these years, until I gifted him a Climber in 2014.   :ahhh

good luck to you all! I'll follow your steps with this classic knife all the way till the end  :tu:

thanks,
it was the first SAK I ever saw as I was just a baby when he already had it  :ahhh

I'll ask him to pull it out when I see him and have a pic of it. It's the oldest SAK in all the family, I think, and it's been well cared for so still looked very well the last time I saw him use it  :salute:

Nein! I vote NO HOOK for the Camper, ha ha. Not a fan of the hook, myself. Which is another reason I like the saw SAKs. You hook folks already have all of the scissors SAKs.  Let us non hook folks have the saw SAKS por favor. Ha ha

I will say, the red nylon scaled Camper is so lightweight, so durable compared to cellidor, and being a Vic, by default is so useful. Among my faves. I don't have a Farmer yet, but only a Farmer, with its shatter proof alox scales, would be better for me.

Looking forward to it, B!!

I've been carrying everything but a Camper to get my time in...

I trust that I'll be allowed to have a 58mm or 74mm chaperone for el Camper??  :D

I've still a few Campers but will probably stick with el early 80's Camper w/inlay.

Have a fun and safe trip!

Getting my Camper ready today!
Since my teepee scales are on my Modded SAK, I thought I'd dress this up with some new duds.  Kind of a hack looking job with packaging tape and all, but I like it.

DAY 2

I used the Camper to restock the Rest Room supplies at the restaurant today.

I used the screwdriver on the bottle opener to pry open 2 of the towel dispensers that we no longer have keys for.

I used the screwdriver on the bottle opener and the tweezers to open the housing on the tissue paper dispensers,

I used the small blade to open two of the other towel dispensers that we have lost the keys for (they take a regular key, but the knife blade still works)

Lots of great photos!
I've been on a road trip, but wanted to participate, so my pics were kind of done quickly.
Enjoyed Yosemite, but didn't make it to the dome.  Lots of twisting roads made my mom feel queasy and although she said press on, I didn't.
She thanked me later.  We still enjoyed the beauty:

Now, strictly this is off topic but bear with me ...

Barry posted a pic of his Camper with his Magnum PI Camper van toy. That reminded me of a MAD Magazine take off of Magnum (keep with it ...).

Now I don't have a Camper but after much rummaging and some dumb luck ... I found the magazine  :woohoo:

So here's pic for you Barry with my, er, Super Camper ? What, me worry ?

Bill, now I remember that issue!   . Thanks for posting it  :D

When I first had my Huntsman, I was working in a little drug store as a clerk.  I got into the habit of using the small blade to open packages and saved the big blade for who knows what :D. The habit has stuck with me even after all these years.  I hope to put it and the rest of this awesome tool kit to work this weekend.

Wish I knew you were coming, Barry. Would have rolled out some red. Anyway, the Coast Guard is right at Boston's Italian North End. Any place on Hanover St. Rigolettos restaurant (Salem St, I think) is small but nice with good food. Giorgios right nearby. I've never had bad food in the North End...and Mike's Pastry on Hanover St is a must try. Long lines down the block, but they move quick, so make up your mind before you hit the counter and order like they are the soup nazi.

I believe that was it's name Thundabeagle, I couldn't make out the name on the brow, but it was right across from the Constitution, which was underway yesterday. That was really neat to see :like: :like:

It doesn't get much better than a fresh cup over a camp stove!  Pictured is my old Optimus 8R stove.  It will run on almost anything that is liquid and combustible, and is small enough to fit in a backpack.

Great pics everyone!  Greg, that salad looks delicious!!  I had to replace the chain on my saw, usually a pretty straightforward process.  Unfortunately, one of the studs that secure the chain bar to the body fell into the engine housing.  Through no desire of my own, my saw and I are going to become better acquainted . The Camper and it's caplifter and can opener tip assisted me.  The can opener tip works great in prying open staples on packages.

Nice usage of the Camper folks.  I was doing some comparison shots of EDCs.
Day 8
The photos are of the Expedition (my new EDC once the challenge is over).
Then, my modded mini Woodsman (former EDC and the one I'll return to if the Expedition proves to be too thick).
The Camper, the one I carried the longest in my life, but I now see there are a few tools missing that I often use like flashlight, scissors, pen.
For me, a Camper and Midnite Manager on the keyring would make a dynamic duo.

Title: Re: Camper Challenge!
Post by: Barry Rowland on May 23, 2018, 05:16:09 AM
I got started thru my Dad, who was a pilot and mechanic.  He liked the air cooled engines because of their similarity to aircraft engines.  I've had a couple air cooled models over the years, most recently a '71 Westfalia camper I drove across the US.  This one is a completely different animal!  It's a 5 speed manual I picked up fairly cheap because standard transmissions are a lost art   I really like it so far.  I have a decent commute to work, so the fuel economy sure helps.  I'm surprised by the amount of room in it.  I don't think I'll be able to maintain it with my Huntsman the way I did the others though!

This blade was new on the first day of the Challenge.  My dirty secret is I don't wipe the blade down after each use.  Good thing I don't use it for food prep.
The blade will get to a point where it won't open a package and then I'll get all the goo off of it and start the process all over again.

Thank you!  I think I had a coupon or free shipping...it didn't take much for me to go overboard as I wanted those and didn't want to wait too long or else they become $40 each.

Here's a unique use of the saw in a non-outdoors environment.  I had to use the saw to break out of a room after the door knob failed.  I remember using this trick to break into a room years ago after locking the keys inside, but this is a first for me!

Here's a unique use of the saw in a non-outdoors environment.  I had to use the saw to break out of a room after the door knob failed.  I remember using this trick to break into a room years ago after locking the keys inside, but this is a first for me!

Good use of the saw Barry! :like: :tu: :tu:

I have done the same thing to open a door....the saw works well for that.

Same to you Greg!  My small blade probably sees more use than any other tool on my SAKS.  Here I'm using it to cut the seal on a vitamin bottle.

I have often thought of changing my small blade for an inline awl but it is the same here. Most used tool on any sak

Day 19
Almost 2/3rds into the challenge and I'm filled with nostalgia.  The Camper feels right at home in my pocket as it has been the most carried SAK in my life.
I am beginning to realize that I do utilize and long for other tools.  Scissors are one and plus scales for a pen.  If I were to go back to carrying a Camper, I'd want to pair it with one of the 58mm family.  Probably a Vagabond....or Midnite Manager...or my own creation of a Midnite Vagabond:

What was inside?  A wool blanket.  It can get cold here in Southern California, if you consider 65 degrees cold like I do.

kottskrapa, Oops, maybe I meant Camper with my Camper.
Love that Camper Lisa!!
It's surprising that it's only 10 feet long, but has bunkbeds that turn into a couch, 4 person table that turns into a big bed, stove, refrigerator, fan, closet, and sink, portipotty too.
I have solar that charges the 12V deep cycle battery.  Total little off-grid system.  I thought I'd use it more for camping, but I've used it most for visiting friends/relatives and not having to stay either in their home or at a hotel.  :tu:

You may want a 16 footer, mine is considered 13 feet (this includes the tongue length).  Some similar brands are: Casita, Boler, U-Haul (they made one in fiberglass), Burro, then there are the Airstream (metal), but expensive in my opinion.  The nice thing about California DMV is it only costs $10 every 5 years for the tags.  As long as the Camper is 16 feet or under it's $2 a year.

kottskrapa, Oops, maybe I meant Camper with my Camper.
:tu:

That is the perfect set-up for traveling and visiting friends. :like: :tu: :tu:

Day 30!
I was watching a survival show and they mentioned the 5 C's of survival (some opinions vary), but this was presented on that episode.

1) Cut - I have the Camper for cutting
2) Cover - can be hat, but blanket or tarp are better for coverage
3) Cord - I have my paracord bracelet in the photo
4) Carry - something to carry water in, I have the Fiji bottle in the photo - some type of cook pot is better so you can use it to boil water
5) Combust - something to start a fire - I have the lighter in the photo
