I had a black one but sold it (and kicking myself for doing so!) and then managed to get a stainless one to replace it. It's not bnib, but it's still a great tool! I'd love to see Buck re-introduce this tool.

Nice one mate. :tu: The BuckTool was the first tool -- and actually the first thing in general -- I had tried to buy off of the internet. Paid via bank transfer and never actually received it. This was all back in '96-'97 but I still get a bit jumpy every time I see a pic of it... :-\

I tried to make some pics of my Bucktool with my mobile phone but all of them came out too crappy to post them! ::) :D Oh well, there are already a lot of good pics in this thread so I guess it doesn´t matter that much...
Today I have handled it the first time again since at least 12 years and I have to say that I really like the look of it. I also like the small signs on its handle which show which tools are in which handle. And if I remember right it was one of the first mt with a lock release button. But this is already all I like... Mine has got a fully serrated and a partially serrated blade which is imo a very "unhappy" combination. A plain and fully serrated blade or only a half serrated blade and a file or saw would have been much better. This said, it neither has a file nor a saw. Instead it has a lot of single flat screwdrivers plus two 3D Phillips screwdrivers. Some of them could have been integrated into a can or bottle opener like SOG or Victorniox do it. Other than that, all tools of my Bucktool have some play and if I squeeze the open handles while using the pliers, they touch each other in the middle easily. Imo the whole tool is just not really thought out and feels way to flimsy...
Being a collector, it is nice to have one but I will never ever edc it for sure!!

The TiNi Bucktools were given as gifts to the seven people who got the Bucktool project started. All seven people also got a custom made leather sheath for their tool. I got this tool from one of my friends who got it from CJ Buck CEO of Buck Knives (CJ Buck engraved his signature and wrote a COA). My friend is doing a very detailed book on the history of the Buck Master knife, he is funding the book by selling Buck memorabilia. I guess it is good to have good friends.
BTW the book should be out within the next few months.

Now do I like my BuckTools , hell yeh :D :D , as collector pieces ;) :D :D. If I used the 360 & 350 I am almost certain I would break them :( :(. It is a real shame Buck abandoned the plier based MT market as I reckon they would of made improvements & got there in the end :think: :think:.

It looks like the early version should be stronger with the extra bracing on the head but the newer style seems to have less flex in the handles, at least on the ones I have

I did not notice the plier difference. I will have to look at mine.
I bid on another tool clip last night but gave up at 77 dollars with shipping so the other guy got it for a dollar more.

I have one of the bucklite tools with the nylon sheath and it is very similar in size to the original leatherman. a neat little tool indeed.

I noticed that there was not a Bucktool with the pocket clip picture in this thread and I got real lucky and found one last week. I have not got it cleaned up yet but here is the picture of it when it arrived. Does anyone know the correct model number...360-CL?

Thank you Allan :salute: The 355 model is that non locking then :think: if so it will have to go on my 'really need it must have at all costs and in place of more important things list' kinda in to my non locking MT's at the mo and being in the UK, just like to carry and use my MT's :D

The 355 BuckLite Tool and the 350 MiniBuck Tool are non locking. The 360 BuckTool is the only BuckTool that the implements lock. Other than color variations (350 MiniBuck Tool came in Black Oxide) these tool only came with the implements shown.

I love the BuckTool, and I would love to see it return- if anyone from Buck is reading this, BRING BACK THE BUCKTOOL, even if it is only a special run or limited release.
What makes the BuckTool special? Simple- it's innovative. When it came out during what I like to think of as the First Golden Age Of Multitools, a period in which everyone recognized the brilliance of the plier based tool Tim Leatherman had released and struggled to make thier own version, everyone was trying to solve the problems defined by the PST. The biggest issue was the exposed sheet metal edges, and the race was on to find a way around that- Schrade rotated the handles 90 degrees, Bear rotated them 180 degrees, SOG rotated the hinges 90 degrees or added awkward flaps and Gerber developed the sliding head plier concept. I think Buck's answer incorporated the best of these ideas by having the handles fold sideways, but opposite to eachother.
Was it another silly gimmick? I say no, because it allowed the convenience of opening the pliers one handed like the butterfly styled PST although without the rough edges. It allowed for a hand friendly ergonomic handle without the added bulk of the ST-1. The plier head wouldn't fold sideways during use like the ParaTool, and it didn't have extra pieces thrown in to try and cover it's own shortcomings like the Powerlock. The mechanism didn't waste as much space as the sliding mechanism on the Multiplier, and as if all that wasn't enough, it incorporated a very smooth, effective non-obtrusive lock mechanism- something that Schrade and Bear didn't manage to do, and most other companies like Leatherman and SOG showed how unimaginative they were by using an existing rocker type lock.
There were some drawbacks though- some of the stubby screwdrivers were a bit of a pain, the three sided phillips was a bit odd and if twisted the right way the plier head would start to fold, but how many of these other companies got it right the first time around?
Given that this design is almost 20 years old, imagine what 20 years of development and inoovation would have brought us today had Buck not killed the line and moved to China? Now with Buck bringing much of their line back in house, I think it's high time we saw an updated, USA made version of the 360.

I got an unused 360 recently, and it's certainly an interesting concept. The pliers are mechanically weaker than "conventional" multitools due to the way the heads are affixed to the handles and the orientation of the sheet metal at that point. As for the drivers and 3 winged Phillips, I don't feel they are much worse than a lot of multitools currently available - I'm thinking Gerber's 2.5D Phillips and the stubby drivers on the Juice line.
At this stage I'm undecided whether this tool is one I should put into use, or pass on unused for someone to keep as a safe queen. It's quirky - but I've yet to decide whther it's quirky in the right way or the wrong way for me personally - and for me it's a user or a loser
I'd like to see Buck have another shot at the plier based multitool market and be as innovative as before - although people generally expect a pliers based tool of this size to have heavier duty pliers than Buck offered previously. The X-Tract was another innovative tool which didnt fit my needs - big locking knife (not the best start for us Brits) and (again) lightweight pliers didn't tick my boxes, but it was fun to try out for a while. Alternatively if Victorinox won't bring out a line to rival the Juice, maybe Buck could :think: At least we know they'd do something different with the challenge and be prepared to start with a blank canvas, and I do respect Buck for that

Grant you bring up some good points buddy. One thing I`ve noticed and I been guilty of myself at times is that we some times pass judgement about these older tools without considering the times in which they were developed. The BuckTool I got yesterday is a later production one I think and it has a regular Phillips driver not three sided and a lanyard attachment instead of the smaller Phillips driver. I`ve should have two more in of eariler production in a day or two so will post some comparision pics later. :)

As I said, these really do ooze quality, I didn't realise how old they wear :think: would also like to see these remade, very nice MT :tu: 50ft-trad if you decide to pass it on please PM as I'd like to see and try one of these even though its a locking one as I too like use or lose :multi:

I have discussed the BuckTool with a Buck Knives employee. One of the reasons the BT was discontinued is that Buck had to pay "royalties" on the design of the BT, and it became cost prohibitive to continue producing the BT and stay competitive in the Multitool market. During the time the BT was manufactured the market was being flooded with new Multitools and Buck Knives felt it could no longer compete with other manufacturers. I really doubt Buck would ever do another Multitool run, as I understand it that when Buck Knives run out of warranty parts for the tools that will be the end. I know they have very few parts left for the tools now.

Here are a few comparision pics of some differences in the BuckTool. In descending order the first pic shows the plier head differences pointed out by Bob earlier in this thread. From left to right the second pic shows the older plier head is a little beefer looking.

The third pic shows the newer BuckTool ( bottom tool ) has a different tool set. The Phillips is four sided not three. The small Phillips is replaced by a lanyard attachment. From right to left the the fourth pic shows the two different sheaths the BuckTool 360 came with.

I'm betting that all the people listed in the patent application had (have) agreements with the Assignee Buck Knives, Inc. Brett Seber is probably one of casualties of Buck Knives moving North...actually a casualty of the Workers Compensation problems that drove Buck from Southern California. Many of the former Buck employees did not follow the company to Idaho. Not that you could blame them.
When I spoke to Buck Knives about getting one of my Bucktools fixed they said they did not have the lock component but if I sent it in they would see what they could do. I asked why they quit making the Bucktool and I was told that they were stopped by Leatherman because of a patent issue. Makes sense since Leatherman, Frazer and Collins are all listed in the patent document.

I watched the 360 clip but I already had one so I let it go. If you watch you can pick up a 355 Bucklite tool for under $20. I got a new Bucklite tool for $20 shipped in September. If they go low I will bid on them so watch out. >:D

LB I`ve the 360, 360CL and 360FL. Of the regular 360s I`ve got two with different tool sets. So I guess I`ve got four different ones at the moment. I looking for one with the file you just got and a camo one. I just missed a camo one this week it went much higher than I thought it would. :)

Yes the camo 360 went high especially since it did not look in very good condition. They seem to sell high around the holidays more competition.. So far I have came up with 8 different standard factory models, with 3 Special production or Prototype.

I see a typo in my list :-[
The 360WM Workman is the file with 5 wire strippers
360WM file replaces drop point blade, Awl replaces can/bottle opener
360 with lanyard is The "Standard 360" from the year 2000.
The 360 with lanyard has a Serrated Sheepsfoot blade a can opener and a Phillips screw driver.

It's a First Production Run BuckLite tool, serial number 078 of 300. (sorry for the poor photos) The engraving is rather small, and doesn't show very well through the blister package. :-\

I found this story in an old BCCI Newsletter. I found it interesting.

"Special Projects
Top Brands BuckTool and BuckLite Tool - No Logo
The drop point side of the handle will not have the Buck logo.
Top Brands does premium products in which they apply other
companies logo's to our products. There is no way to know who
will be ordering from Top Brands so just keep your eyes open
and if you see a BuckTool with another company's logo on the
one side, you will now know why. Approximate quantities will
be 3500 BuckLite tools and 4000 BuckTools".
No more information in any newsletters as to other names etched on BuckTools that Top Brand did so be on the LOOK OUT for these.
I did find on a list where there may be some (about 50) BuckTools done for the NRA (National Rifle Association) these were etched/pad stamped by Buck Knives.
I also found a run of 2250/360's and 500/355's done for DU (Ducks Unlimited) by Buck.
The information indicates that Buck etched/pad stamped some tools on the "knife blade" and some on the "handle". If you find or have one of these let me know and I will try to find a quantity and year they were made.
As I find more special BuckTool projects I will post the information.

The BCCI information is helpful too, thanks. A thought though.....I can understand Buck producing a few thousand tools with no "Buck" logo so they could be rebranded for other companies, but what about the bit driver extension? Did they make those special just for the Harley version? It doesn't seem like they would tool up and make an accessory like that in such a small quantity..? :think:

The Bucktool actually bucked a trend for me - pun intended!
I consider myself to be a tool user rather than a collector, even if I have got a growing assortment to choose from. I have tools I use regularly, tools I use occasionally and tools I haven't needed to use yet - but I'm just waiting my moment. I don't consider any of my tools to be safe queens, and I certainly don't collect as an investment. I use my Mini, my Toolclip V2, Swissgrip, Mini Bear Jaws and several other tools which for many have been confined to exhibition and discussion pieces.
On top of all those I also have a Bucktool ... and it doesn't fit into any of the usage classifications.
Everything else that I've not seen as a user has now left me - Sideclip, pulse, x-tract, mini-grip ... none of those worked for me as users, so they've moved on to new homes and most importantly, I've not regretted moving any of them on.
Again, the Bucktool is different. It is a tool which I cannot see as being part of the rota or can identify a specific delegated arena for as I do with many of my tools, yet it is one which I do not want to part with. I've been tempted to offer it up for trade or sale more than once, but when I get it out of the sheath ... all of a sudden I don't want to anymore. Maybe I will at some point, but for now I'm sure even I with my strict "tools are for using" philosophy can allow myself one "collector's piece". It's not like it's valuable or special in any way other than it's wonderful quirkiness.
At least if I only have one such tool I can still say I'm not a collector ... by definition a collection should be plural :D

I have been adding to my BuckTool display. As usual every time I get a new tool I notice a new variation.
Buck came out in their 2000 catalog with the 360 BuckTool with a lanyard loop as the standard model. The previous 1996 through 1999 standard 360 had a #2 Phillips in place of the lanyard loop. The 2000 catalog also had the new model 360CM camo BuckTool.
I have had a 360CM camo for some time now,I recently got a good buy on another 360CM. I got to looking at the 2 of them and I noticed one has a lanyard loop the other has the 2D Phillips. The 2000 Buck catalog show the 360CM as having a lanyard loop. Both of the handles are stamped with the Phillips icon.

I have been buying a few different BuckTool 360's recently (with/without nail slots, files, H-D, DLC etc) so I thought I should have a closer look at the one I've had for a while, so I did. I think I may have a different variant:
This one has conventional nail nicks in both CE and SE blades (ie LM style, not the usual BuckTool slots that go all the way through the blades in the later ones, nor the total absence of anything in the earlier versions). It has the old style pliers with the extra lug that touches the handles when open. These nail nicks look totally professional as if that's how the blades were made originally (definitely not a crude home brew modification).
Has anyone else ever seen a BuckTool 360 with regular nail nicks (not slots) ?

LL Bean customers said they liked the BuckTool how ever they complained the blades were to hard to open with no Nail Nicks so Buck ground crescent Nail Nicks into the blades to fill the order. After that order the new BuckTools had the "hole" nail nick. Not sure of the quantity made but it is a low number. Ironically I caught one recently on the bay, after 4 years of fishing.

Looking at my black Bucktool 360 I'm inclined to think the black finish is actually DLC not BO (DLC seems smoother and harder/more durable).
Camo 360's are definitely in short supply, but the black 360's seem a little more common (but still expensive) on ebay.com.

Glad to see you back online. :cheers: I noticed the missing pictures some time ago and was jut checking when you last logged in two days ago. I was getting worried. Hope you'll manage to figure out the problem with the Photobucket pics and manage to retreave the pictures from your old computer. If it was the motherboard that died, then just adding the old hard dick drive in the new computer should get you access to the old files no problem. :cheers:

Today I finally snagged a Buck 360WM (5 notch file, same as the Harley-Davidson branded version, and SE Sheepsfoot blade). I've been looking for one of these for a while, but they don't seem to come up for sale very often. I think (hope ?) that completes my set of regular production 360's. :D

The 360WM Workman/Harley Davidson have 5 wire strippers. The 360FL has 1 wire stripper. The list below is off on that point, I need to be careful when I copy and paste.
Is your 360BK black oxide(BO) or Diamond-Like Coating(DLC) ? Mine definitely feels more like DLC than BO
The 360BK is listed as having Black Oxide coating. I think with handling it may get polished some to give it a smoother appearance. I have Buck knives with DLC and it is definitely a higher gloss finish than my 360BK

Buck made a numbered run of 400 FPR 360's and 300 FPR numbered 355's that were engraved as such. These were done for the BCCI (Buck Collectors Club)
Can you post a picture of your 360BK so I can see the finish?

Yes the BuckTool parts are gone. If you send it in you would most likely get an X-Tract as a replacement.

2 for $10..i couldn't pass up. Buck Model 355 and 360. They appeared to be coated in cosmoline when i bought them. I'm still in the clean up phase of the tools but thought i'd share. No rust, tools looks to be in good shape. I found these on the app site Letgo. I recommend it for finding cheap multis and knives. I'm gonna let these soak for a bit in Pacu's secret cosmoline remover followed by tool lube for a couple days and go after them with a nylon brush/ pipe cleaners.

I just won an unusual Buck 360 on ebay. I bought it because it has a nail nick on the serrated blade (this was usually only on the LL Bean version), but the combo blade has the nail slot (as per later production 360's). Seeing as these MTs have rivets, not screws I'm guessing this was made after the LL Bean run was finished, but the factory still had some serrated blades with nail nicks left over, so in the spirit of "waste not, want not" they used them up with regular slotted combo blades.
I had a bit of competition for this one, presumably from a fellow Buck collector, and I was wondering if it was anyone on here ? (no hard feelings over the price I paid, just curious)

Glad to see you out bid me on that. ;) I was hoping who ever won it had an idea what they were getting. I think your evaluation is correct on the way it was made. The only other idea was it may have been sent back for warranty work. What ever the case, if you ever want to part with it let me know. I could never figure that out myself. Maybe the designer had a surplus of combo blades to be used up, and they never got around to changing the design ?

I just added a Buck Minitool 350 to my collection. Much smaller than I expected. I'm disappointed because it is extremely loose, so it isn't a very good pocket tool. On the other hand I am impressed with the quality of this diminutive multi tool.

Got me a BuckTool now and I really like it. Unfortunately it would not suit my personal work needs, so it will be a shelf queen. It is nearly perfect, with just a 1/64th" bit of pitting inside a handle. Tools are unused and the tool is tight. Blades are untouched and razor sharp. It has the two three sided phillips. Tools are well made and the non clumping is awesome with the locking system and half stops.
This is a tool every MT collector should have at least one of..IMO. After seeing the smallish size of this 360, I will stick with it being my only BuckTool though(I like mid size and HD MTs the best). The 350 & 355 must be tiny, huh? They cost more than the 360 too(I paid $33 for my 360)! :o

The 355 isn't a great deal smaller than the 360, but as Yadda says the 350 is very, very small (and way too many of them have loose plier/handle pivots - it must be a design flaw).

The rivets can be crushed in a press to fix that, but only if someone is actually going to use their tool. It will cause a cosmetic issue, though acceptable and small, to press the rivets tighter.
I use the press at work to tighten plier heads at work when they get loose and the cutters fail. A minor blemish is a small price for a daily user tool to function well. :cheers:

I find it interesting how after many years of collecting BuckTools, you discover something I have never noticed before. I looked at my BuckTools and found 1, 2,3,4,5 and 6 dot tools. My first guess is a date code, as the evolution of the tool seems to coincide with the number of dots. The number of dots differ on all tools I have from one side of the head to the other. Like 2 dots one side the other 3 dots. So this may have aided in assembly. I will be in contact with Buck to see if any one can give me an answer. I will try this weekend to post pictures of the dot variation I have.

Been awhile but have a minute to reply.
ReamerPunch Nice tools as I see your tools seem to show older tools seem to have less dots. Your first tool would be a 1996. the other a 1997. These dates come from when the tool appeared in the Buck Knives catalog.
I got an email from Buck Knives historian. I will quote it here.
" As with a lot of molded components, it’s common for the mold maker to add an identifying mark to the mold so that they will know which mold that particular part came from. If, for instance, we started to get a lot of out of tolerance jaws from the supplier, they would look to see if they were all from the same cavity. If they all had 5 dots, the mold maker knew he had a problem with that mold cavity. ( If you ever take apart something that is cast or molded plastic, you will likely see either a number, or some type of symbol. ) I believe the Buck Tool had a 6 cavity mold and that would explain the 1 to 6 dots found."
That being said I did notice some correlation between the older models and the number of dots. Here are a couple of tools with dots.

Wow?! I've never noticed the dots before. My 360CL has 5 & 6 dots. My 355 has 2 dots on both sides but on the opposite side compared to the 360. I need a magnifying glass if I hope to see anything on my 350.

Just found what I believe is a “Workman” version of the 360 Bucktool. Similar to the Harley Davidson set except that the awl replaced the can opener on the Workman and one of the Phillips drivers on the Harley. Has a nail nick slot in the file too.
Looks like the bit set from the Harley tool will not work on this one (or any other 360 that I can tell). It will work on a 355 though. Go figure.......this Workman also has a fully serrated blade instead of the combo blade on the Harley....... :cheers:

I must admit I never got into collecting the X-Tract MTs. There does seem to be a few different variants. I even have a no-name copy.
If you want some hard to find Buck MTs that will keep you amused (searching) for a while, try looking for the coloured Navigator 753 MTs (buck made quite a few pre-production samples, but never went to full scale production). NB These are strictly shelf queen material, they weren't resolved/developed well enough to be an EDC (IMO).

Indeed. The 350 is soo strange, to the point it is charming. Not the most practical though. The 360 is my personal favorite, because of the locking tools. Quite an innovative system for the era they were designed.
My Mini is in great shape, except someone broke the driver tip off of the bottle opener. If I were a bit more into keychain tools, I'd spend the money for a better example, but those things are expensive. :ahhh

The mini-buck is so small and delicate it is almost like they said to themselves - How small can we make a Buck MT that folds like the bigger ones ?
Unfortunately once they have been used a bit many of these littlies get very loose/floppy in the mechanism that folds out the pliers :cry:

First I would like to say NICE BuckTools every one that has posted above. Great collection of X Tracts gerleatherberman.
I recently received one of my Grail BuckTools, it has the Phillips screwdriver icon reversed on the handle.
I have watched Ebay for many years searching for this 360 BuckTool, a week ago one came up for bid and I won it.
So onto my dilemma.

I have 2, first production run BuckTools that are still sealed in the original clam pack that I never opened. Have I had one of these reverse icons for years and didn't know it? Are all First Production BuckTools reverse icon? I do not want to open them to find out. I can only see the First Production side in the clam pack. So if any of you with 360 First Production Run tools could look and see if yours has reverse icon I would appreciate it. If yours are sealed please "do not open" them.

OK. Both of my 360 FPR's are opened, so I had a look for you. Both of mine are different to yours, they are the same as the other early 360's I looked at ie they have the small philips icon in the 3rd spot and the large philips icon in the 4th position (which accurately reflects the positions of the actual tools). One is number 034 (of 400) and the other is 087, so were labelled either side of yours (but that doesn't mean the actual build sequence was bracketing your # 075)
I think you can safely assume your "reversed philips icons" 360 is indeed a truly rare bird :salute: :tu: Are the tools reversed as well ? (somehow I doubt it)

According to the Buck information I have there were under 2000 of these reverse icons made, but not sure exact numbers. I think the number is way less than that. There were around 2000 Harley Davidson BuckTools made and they are not too difficult to find.

Bucks multitools called were BuckTools. They came out in 1996 and were made until 2000. The models included the 360 BuckTool (largest), the355 BuckLite (medium), and 350 MiniBuck. All discontinued in 2000. SwissBucks came out in 1992 and were discontinued 1996. The 730, 731, 732, and 735 are all variations of the X Tract, These models ran from about 2007 until 2013. The X Tracts were imported. The only tool Buck Knives still makes is called the BowTool, that is aimed at archers. Hope this helps.
