Title: Whistles
Post by: Benner on January 07, 2009, 02:22:07 PM
Inspired by American Lockpicker's giveaway http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,8516.0.html I have decided that a whistle would be a good investment for me to make as I am often out in the sticks with groups of children from work who have epilepsy and sometimes it is necessary to call for other staff for support.

So does anyone know of any good whistles that are loud, able to be put on my keys and very importantly, of a strong construction?  The strength is an important factor as I work with challenging behaviour where I can often be hit and kicked and I don't want to be out somewhere where I need the whistle only to find that it has been broken in an incident earlier that day.

Many thanks all

Ben

I suppose there's newere, flashier fancier whistles on the market, but years ago,I put a good old Acme Thunderer on the keyrings of both Mrs Bison and my daughter.

Those seem to be pretty solid.  One thing though, I think I'd prefer to have something flatter (unless there is a model there that I missed) so that it will ride slightly better in my pocket on my keys.

FOX 40 Micro:

Dirt cheap, available anywhere, comes in a two pack and audible for miles and miles and miles!  :D

Oh yeah... and I haven't been able to break one during "regular" use yet.

I have one of these, sorry but I can't for the life of me remember the name.  Most outdoor shops will stock it though.  Robust as heck and come in a nice range of colours.

Though as you can see the colour does wear a bit.  :-\

There's a similar one with a survival capsule available from EDCDepot.com.  Marc also carries the FOX 40 line... or at least some of them.

The best whistle, IMO, is the Ultimate Survival Technologies Jet Scream whistle! I have a few Fox whistles, and I think that this is the loudest by far!

When I did a google search that one seemed the most readily available over here.  Anyone else carried one of those?

LM123 if it got kicked in my pocket would it be in one piece afterwards?

I'd say so..it's pretty damn tough... I have one on the boat, and while docking the boat one time, my 235 lb self stepped on it and it was fine!  :)

How much are Acme whistles over there? I know I got 2 Metropolitan police whistles for $7 at a pawn shop before the owner raised the prices and they usually cost $15 -$30 on the internet.

Didn't get much of a whistle out of them though.  Just a slightly higher pitched buzzing.  I really should have chosen a different species for my minions. Not that I had much choice in the matter :D

On a slightly more sensible note. They're little glass bees made in a shop in Whitby (more famous for lucky ducks (http://www.whitbyluckyducks.com/)).  They were one of those silly purchases you make whilst looking round such places on your honeymoon  ::)  I rediscovered them in a pot a few months ago and thought they could assist me in my tool shots.  :)

They are custom, they are limited in number and are collected by quite a lot of people.  The prices bump up so high as people are willing to pay the price to get these rare pieces.

Flash made a good point in another thread , in cold conditions you should avoid metal whistles , ya know why they don't make metal privvy seats ? I think I'd go with a Fox 40 or a Jet Scream .

I have one of these, sorry but I can't for the life of me remember the name.  Most outdoor shops will stock it though.  Robust as heck and come in a nice range of colours.

Though as you can see the colour does wear a bit.  :-\

Second that, very good whistle. Plastidip the end if you're going to Siberia. As for Fox 40s, they don't instill me with confidence. One broken one was all I needed.

Well I got one of the Acme Tornado 2000 Whistles.  Very, very loud!  Bit of a weird trill sound to them that isn't pleasant but it'd certainly grab attention.  They are bulky though :(

ALP, wander down to your local sports shop, they seem to be sold pretty much everywhere as they're a big hit with referees.

Ah, that's what it was called, I couldn't remember.  That pic must be a little old now as almost all the colour is gone from the whistle.  One thing to note about these is that they are really easy to over blow.  A very gentle puff is all that is required to get the best note.

I have to say that the ones Neil passed out at the meet-up have a very pleasant set of notes to them.  Thanks again for those mate.  :tu:

A whistle is a very good survival and outdoor item.  The sound carries much farther than your voice and doesn't wear out when signalling for help.  I know www.rei.com carries several good ones.  For a signalling whistle you want plastic for cold and pealess if possible as a pea can freeze up or fail.  Here's a search on REI for their whistles.

I have a bright orange flat plastic whistle for the outdoors.  Don't carry it on a key ring.  It has an integrated clip for putting it on a belt or other strap as well as a lanyard.  For any outdoor activity I consider it essential EDC.  However I don't carry it otherwise.  In town a whistle would be a security deterrent I suppose.  Some women carry them.  In the outdoors it is a good cheap emergency signal device.

I'm not sure.  I can't find Jetscream in my area at all.  "Sgt. Mike" does a test and review of some whistles (http://sgtmikessurvivaltips.blogspot.com/2008/05/who-gives-toot-whistle-tests-coming.html) and says the Jetscream registers an average of 110.6 db.  He doesn't review the Tornado 2000 though.   ???

The Tornado 2000 is still a great whistle for the money.  I paid a regular price is $3 CAD for it which is about $1 USD or 1.7 GBP.

I have maybe 10 different kinds of whistles- from classic metal ones to titanium, and the loudest 3 that I have are:
WindStorm, Fox 40 and JetScream-all pea-less
WindStorm is by far the loudest, but it's to big for edc
Fox 40 Micro is my favorite, very loud, glow in the dark and slim and small for edc carry

The new Fox 40 Sonic claims more than 120db:

I'm not sure how substantial a jump from the previous models rated at only 115 this is, as I imagine both would cause permanent hearing loss if you used it often enough!

That said and TBH I treat mine as a safety device to be used sparingly when needed not something you would blast just for the fun of it  :tu: which BTW could cause hearing problems if used prolonged JMO  ;) After all if I need to whistle just for fun I can just blow a few raspberries  :D

I picked up some Tops Whistles for the family while hiking and camping. http://www.topsknives.com/product_info.php?products_id=248 (http://www.topsknives.com/product_info.php?products_id=248)

Found them somewhere online in a multi-pack that worked out good

Necrobump :D

I got a couple of ACME 649 survival whistles for our emergency bags. They are pretty OK for the total of €5 they cost :tu:

They are quite loud with little effort and their somewhat two-tone sound should be discernible from ambient sounds from some distance. I hope I never have to find out the hard way though!

They sure do look like good solid whistles.

I hope you have better luck with ACME products than Wile E. Coyote does.

When I was a kid I had a tiny whistle, shaped like a σ but without a pee. Man, that thing had a defeaning, acute sound! Sadly, I lost it at some point and never found another one.

It's a whistle, I mean, what could possibly go wrong?!

Although I suppose I could choke on it or break a tooth or get a stroke while blowing or suffer permanent hearing damage...

I think you mean a whistle with out a pea.  I hope most whistles you buy or use are 100% free of pee.

Heres the whistle I keep around. It is just an unbranded trinket I got from a product vendor.

Working as and with drivers I ocasionaly have to get the attention of somone about to leave the lot with a messed up order. Tested at 114db this is a mutch better option to yelling.

I have the same in red  somewhere, and sure it works pretty well :)
