Title: swiss tool heads
Post by: scrappy on September 06, 2009, 12:00:23 AM
I bought quite a few swiss tools over the years. I gave several away before I found this place and learned there are different heads. I  never noticed it. I have three types in the sticky pic and another type that is identical but no hard wire cutter.it is the second plier head in the pic. I have one with out the hard wire cutters and one with. are there variations of each plier head? I don't have the first and oldest version or the middle version. I wonder if any of the tools a gave away where the middle model. I have a swiss tool x with the most recent head and am thinking about upgrading my swiss tool and swiss tool rs to the new plier head also. it sure looks tough. is it worth the money to get the new version?

There are people here with much more hands on SwissTool experience than me, but I wouldn't bother getting the new heads if I was you.

The new heads look stronger, but most of the bulk was added to the base, which also means the jaws can't open as wide as the older models. To be honest, I slightly prefer the older ones.

There are extremely few reports of broken older SwissTool pliers, and the problem with plier head play doesn't seem to be corrected by the new plier heads. I really don't think you would be gaining anything by getting the new heads.

Remember, if you do encounter any problems at some point, Vic will likely just swap your old SwissTool for a new one free of charge. Why the rush?  ;)

I agree the loss of ability to open the pliers wider is a dissapointment. I have mentioned it in other posts. at first I preferred the older models but I carry a charge in my pocket and it opens wider than all swiss tools. I am thinking of wearing a swiss tool also. it is a win / loose ...

I have a regular SwissTool from '98 which does not have the hard-wire cutter notch.  My more recent SwissTool X with same '98 plier head style has the notch already.  :)

Well I've got an 02 and an 05 and to be honest there's not much in it :)

Yes the 05 is theoretically stronger, but I can't see me ever breaking the 02, let alone the 05 :)

I have seen the never style heads and I prefer the older one's on my 98 X, which is good really as I don't feel the need to buy another.  :D

I had an early one with no notch which Dunc has now. I don't really get the point of two notches on the latest ones not that I'm too bothered.
