Title: Special Swiss Champ
Post by: marduk on September 21, 2018, 01:59:31 AM
Zurich's Blick recently announced that Vic had produced a total of 500 million SAKs by July 2017. To commemorate this event, Mr. Elsener himself worked in the shop after hours to produce 3400 special Swiss Champs, each numbered and dated on the liner behind the corkscrew. The knives were presented to the company's employees.

Does anyone know more about these knives?

I seem to recall a thread about that here on the forum.

I heard they were only for the employees. Which I think is pretty cool. I have read where right after 9/11 their income dropped 40% and he would not let any employees go. He kept working them.

Gotta love Victorinox for that  Imagine if all companies acted with the same concern for their staffs wellbeing!  :dd:

:iagree:
Another company I know of that did that was Keuffel and Esser, who made slide rules and provided draftsmen with supplies. It would take the electronic calculators to being made to kill the company. K&E lasted well over a 100 years before the company became history.

I’m still looking for a slide rule to use for personal calculations. A pity that there don’t seem to be many (second hand or otherwise) in Ireland. ::)

To slide rules, and K&E.

You need to go to eBay. I have over 20+ K&E in my collection.

I just checked the Bay again, some K&E there!  :ahhh
What would you consider a good price? Should we talk in another thread to stop derailing this one?
Shipping seems to cost more than the actual slide rule in most cases.  ::)

If you want a slide rule to actually calculate with, I really like Pickett.

One of them is selling on a Swiss second hand shop for 12900 chf. More or less the same amount of dollars. But the guy selling it said they are only 300.

Ask the seller to look at the liner stamp underneath the corkscrew.

On top of that, it's a "minimum offer" price...
Look at the "buy it now"...

Someone who wants to make money like that on the back of a gesture by his/her employer shouldn't work anywhere.

An act of kindness and appreciation gets abused to try and make fast cash.
Bweik!

I agree 100%.
The same applies for the ones that are buying limited editions and are selling them to other collectors charging 30-40-50% more.  It’s not nice.

I sold a Swisstool Spirit S in BO to a coworker yesterday.
He was looking for his first multi and fell in love with the BO S.
I sold it at a €5 profit. He payed little over half the current value.

I've had some luck in collecting so far, so I'm trying to pay it forward.
Therefore, this kind of dealing makes me sick.

Anyway, more on topic, does anyone know what the ACTUAL value of one of these 500MIO knives would be?

This is a little different. The LEs are presented to the general public for acquisition. If, later on, you want to sell them with some profit, I see nothing wrong in that. These, however, were presented to the employees personally. It's like selling a wedding gift you received...

 :-\

IMHO, of course.

If no one has ever bought one, it’s impossible to tell.

Thses knives were freebies for the employees, so they are priceless.  :D

A new, standard red Swisschamp with sheath costs around €100 in most stores here...

What did you expect? We only have two datapoints to work with, and both are extreme values.  :D
Let’s default back to “whatever the buyer wants to pay”.

I see the collectors community, as the word says, as a community. It's a shared love. I don't like trying to get advantage on a shared love.
There 2 ways in my opinion: you buy something paying normal price, you wait it to gain value, you sell it. I am fine with that. But i saw people buying 5x of the limited 100 years Elesner for 90/100$ dollars each and selling them the day after for 140/150$. That's unfair. That's the same thing that happens with concert tickets.
That's my opinion though, so i could be really wrong. :)
Sorry for the OT. This case is even worse as it's a gift for your work. Especially if one asks 18000$ for something he didn't actually make.

For the value i think we need at least a bunch of people who bought/sold it to value it :D I read an article on the local newspaper but there was nothing more than the auction price.

I see where someone in UK is asking $10,000 for the 500 MIO Champ altho the one he is offering is not the really valuable one but only one of the 3400 run-of-the-mill variety. The really valuable one is the SAK whose blade is marked: "Assembled by Carl Elsener." Only 300 of those were produced.
