Title: Let me see your homemade sheaths!
Post by: caninesapien on October 31, 2017, 02:45:43 PM
Hi all. I've been experimenting with different types of sheath/slipcase and so I'd like to see yours! I'll show you mine if you show me yours....  :-[

I must have missed this topic the first time around. I made couple of these sheaths for a few Classics as well as this Executive.

Made a slip for my Micra out of some old wallet leather a few years ago. No stitching just gel superglue and it's holding up great.

I made a sheath for my Squirt and 84mm Tinker from an old leather purse.  I made the sheath for the pen and light from a leather binder cover.  With the left over material I tried to copy my 58mm SAK keychain sheath but it didn't really come out good.  I ended up using for a mini Bic and fox 40 whistle.

Here are a couple of mine. I can't claim any talent here, but they are all very functional and seem to hold up well (so far).

I have a few more planned. I find that I'm often dissatisfied with commercial sheaths or end up with knives that don't have a sheath. So I'm trying to learn to make my own!

Thanks! I am gonna use some thread instead of the rivets as they where just a test to see if it would fit, and I can probably make an endless amount of these pouches since theres always a bus that need seatbelt change

This was my first one ever. Made specifically with distressed saddle leather so as not to look 'new and shiny'.

Here’s one I made a while back from scratch, not the best but it worked.. there’s a few others but I can’t find the pics, I suppose I could take new pics if I can find them.

Found the others, put them in order, it all started because I bought a surefire, I had a combo sheath for a Maglite but the surefire was too big to fit, so I had to make something.. that first one I made overnight cause I had to have something for the next day, then I tried my hand at leather, wasn’t the best but hey it worked, I still had the better leather to make something nice but I didn’t want to waste it so I kept working on a few leather things to get the hang of it and finally made that pancake sheath, that was my fave, I used that for years! But then kinda got out of carrying a multitool, nor a massive flashlight, so I made something smaller, then just a single sak sheath for a custom one I had made, but I’ve been using a pocket carry sak, yet I did customize the already made sheaths to match,

I’m not the best, but as for tips, it pretty much depends on how or what your going to do?
If stitching with a large needle, use something to push it through, over time the fingers are going to be VERY sensitive!
Forming, make sure you use plenty of extra, makes it much more easier and it can always be cut off,
Oh a little trick I like, if punching holes for the stitching, you can also use a dremel/ rotary tool with a very small bit 10times more easy, you don’t have to push so hard! Hope this helps..

Buy cheap leather to work out patterns on before trying an idea on expensive stuff unless you're sure of yourself. I use my leatherman all the time to pull the needle through the leather, far easier on my fingers. Measure out more thread than you think you need, thread is cheap, far cheaper than your time having to undo an entire line of stitching and redoing it because you guessed wrong. Use a very sharp thin knife to cut the leather for a clean cut.

Nix made this awesome, open top low profile sheath for the 110 he sent to me

retention is superb, material well treated and crafted and the construction very solid

also allows for concealment and avoiding trouble, but still having the knife easily accessible   :salute:

this is what I call an ideal sheath for the 110   :like:

Not even close to some of the other work in here but I'm just getting started and this is my second attempt to something serious (first was a wallet for a friend). While doing the spirit x 30 days challenge I realized that horizontal carry was the way to go. So I made a leather sheath with magnet closure. I have found a number of thing I should have done differently so consider this a prototype. But it does the job and rides nice on the belt. Not wetformed but still a nice snug fit

I dyed it after a was done and unfortunately I got a bit messy with the glue

Not to bad, the first one I did wasn’t even leather, it was a combo  for a flashlight / mt, I spent a good 3hrs  cause the flashlight I bought didn’t have a sheath. After that I really wanted leather so I made just kept making them. I’m still no great but here’s a look on how I started..

Totally! I made one other one for a friend and it was perfect, only thing was it was a kit! Some of these leather stores have kits where everything’s cut to size, the edges are nice and smooth and there pre-poked for stitching, and the only thing you have to do is glue some things, stitch them, and put a button or magnet on, only thing is the size, normally isn’t always right for your item, you want one for a flashlight and it’s a maglite, that and the holes for the stitching are huge!

Idk about over your way but here’s an idea of what I was talking about. It’s a combo, knife/flashlight. But as you can see it’s made specifically for a maglite, as for the knife/tool idk? But you get pieces pre-cut and ready to put together, same with the button along with the needle and thread. What you don’t get is the design, the leather is just plain so you can make it the way you want, but they do put the pattern on paper for the possibility..

not exactly a sheath but a pocket caddy

and it's homemade, but not by me, but rather by our always awesome friend Nix here  :tu:

I've been carrying it for the last week every day on my vest pocket, and it's really good for easy access, keeping the stuff I put inside straight and looking good,  :like:

three things I wouldn't have achieved if I had tried to craft this caddy myself
This will come with me tomorrow, I use it even on weekends because it looks so cool and works so nicely ::)

Here's my first and only crack at making a sheath. I needed a larger sheath for a modified Rev, so used my Wave sheath as a guide.
One added feature that is quite handy is the elastic pocket inside so you can carry one of the plastic bit holders.

If at first you don't succeed......

Made another sheath for the new knife today.

This time I used some 8/9oz leather and added a second welt to the upper half (to match the handle).

For some reason (perhaps adding an extra welt or the thicker leather or just not on my game) this sheath more difficult to make than the first one. And it didn't come out quite as nicely.

But the big difference is that it seems to work.     It still needs some oil and wax, but I'm confident this one will doe just fine.

I did angle the belt loop slightly to give the handle a slight forward cant. Not sure how that will work out, but I think it will make using the sheath a bit easier. Time will tell.

This pocket sheath was inspired by many I saw online.  I took an old leather purse and some paracord inner strands and came up with it.  I like it over all but its been needing some fine tuning.  I've acquired some synthetic sinew that I'll restitch the sheath with and make some other minor adjustments.  Over all tho the sheath is wonderful.  If I were to do it again I'd add a front pocket area for my Pocket Wrench 2.  Or some elastic or something to hold one extra item.

Thank you.  I really want to get another old purse for leather.  I've passed up on a few at the flea market.  Now that I've made this one ( last year some time ) I'm ready to try again.   It was a fun process with such limited tools.

I got tired of regular pens poking through my pockets or loosing my Fishers when I carry them.
So I started keeping a Fisher Trekker tied to my wallet. But I reciently changed wallets and there is no place for my pen.
The old issue of standing up and finding a pen in my boots became a problem again.

Solution:
Fresh out of the kitchen (seriously I just made it 5min ago), handcrafted  from a piece of recycled sofa....A leather pouch.
This is just the right size for either of my Fishers and a full size Bic

I made a sheath for my folding saw.
I used a piece of denim from a pair I shortened. Put a buckle on it, and a grab handle.
The buckle strap is adjustable, in case I get a longer saw. I put a rubber strap to hold the excess in place.
I decided against a belt loop. It would have looked better with one, but its back is not rigid enough to carry well on a belt.

I particularly like that the orange lanyard matches the orange thread the denim had on it.

Here's the belt loop system I came up with.
I sewed a denim piece on the back. It is sewn at its four corners, which allows a belt or strap to be fed through either horizontally or vertically.
Because it is sewn on, it cannot attach to a fixed strap, and requires a belt to be taken off in order to attach it.
To counter this, I also put a velcro belt loop on there. I can now feed the velcro strap through the denim loop, and quickly attach it to a strap or belt.

In the event that I just put it on my belt with the denim strap, I can store the velcro strap on the front flap, thanks to the buckle strap that runs the full length of the flap.

It ain't pretty. This is actually its worst side, but I had to show the belt loop. Which is a pull loop from the old boot I got the leather from.
The knife is a Green River blank with handle slabs from a black walnut branch, picked up on my land.

Read through this thread last night.  Some really good work here!    :salute:

I've been looking at leather pocket slips online for the last few months.  Lots of companies on Instagram and Etsy making some nice items.  Most of them are US or Europe based and with exchange and shipping would cost more than I'm willing to pay, so I purchased a leather stitching kit (for half the cost of a slip) and thought I'd have a go at making some myself.

Here's the result:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48333150016_2b988671d6_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2gD32AG)

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48333284817_b110ef9515_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2gD3HER)

I'm pleased.  The knife and light fit really well, and I had fun making them.  I do have some questions if anyone wants to answer them...

I didn't glue the edges together.  Do you guys glue before you stitch?  If so what glue do you like to use?
I burnished the edges where the stitching is with water and saddle soap, then rubbed on some beeswax based leather care product (I use it on my work boots usually).  I'm assuming having glued edges makes the finished burnished edge look way better.   Would it work better to burnish the edges first then glue and stitch?, as now that it is stitched I can't burnish the top edges.   Any tips on burnishing?

I glue the edges with rubber cement to seal it a little bit. I started doing that worried that moisture would reside in the seam and perhaps rot over time. It also hold it in place while I stitch everything together.

Whipped up a pocket slip today with some leather I salvaged from an old purse.

I don't have any leather working tools so I used what I had around the house.

Getting started

Rough shape and size

At this point I used some gel superglue in a few spots just to hold it together until I could mark and punch some holes for sewing

I used a kitchen fork to mark my holes

There

Used a small drill bit to punch the holes. I don't have any leather thread so I used what was at hand. Some heavy fishing line that I use for Muskie fishing.

All done

Fairly pleased with how it came out as this is my first time stitching leather.

Followed Steve's link, in the traditional challenge, to here.  Nice examples of home made slips.

I had checked eBay for some and thought that 15 dollars was way too pricey.  Went to à nearby craft store and gotà 1pound bag of remnants for 5.00.  had enough scraps for a lot of projects.

Here is a sheath I form fitted to my AG Russell Arkansas Hunter. I used the knife to outline the leather, then, after the sheath was completed, I dipped it in a bowl in which I poured boiling water. I wrapped the knife well in saran wrap and put it into the sheath. After drying, I burnished the edges, and used a deer antler to shape the sheath to the knife. I finally treated the leather with mink oil to condition it. The knife now snaps into the sheath like it is made of kydex.

Keep in mind, boiling leather can be a tricky business, I have had sheaths shrivel up like a salted slug. Also, make sure the sheath is 100% dry before carrying your knife in it.

Thanks JR.

Here is one I made to keep my Trapper poised perfectly in my pocket. This is also boiled leather. The pocket clip was taken from a cheap knife I had. To hold the pocket clip in place (obviously just screwing it into leather would no work) I used a Dremel cutting wheel and cut an oval portion of the knife frame that the pocket clip screwed into. In order to ensure strong stitching that would not rot, I used waxed dental floss, then some mink oil treatments, and finally sealed it with neutral shoe polish that I heated to liquid. Like my previous sheath, I sewed a welt into the seam so that the knife is evenly held in place without any pinch points that would result in a "sticky" draw.

You should wet mold the leather before stitching the sheath together. This ensures you get a better fit and avoid those shrivelling up problems.

Great job on your projects!

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48333291647_453db2b158_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2gD3KGB)

Love those models. Well done!

  :tu:

The shriveling showed up when I boiled the leather. I think I should have squeezed it between pieces of closed cell foam until it dried.

Although it is only my fourth attempt at slip cases,  I'm quite fond of how it ended up. Made from an old leather coat.

Life are busy but manage to get some time on my hands while the kids are in school yesterday and remember a project I started but never finished. One of the first sheath I did was a horizontal one for my spirit x. I wasn't happy with the model, fit or my work so I decided to do a new one. I wanted a horizontal sheath that was slightly tilted and really low profile. This is what I ended up with. I carry it on my belt at one o'clock and don't feel it at all and have actually been checking if it is still there and because it's tilted it's not in the way putting my phone in and out of the pocket.

I did some more finishing and fixed the belt holes after the pics were taken

It looks a bit bulky but that's not what it looks like or feel in real life

Alright, I finally made my first knife sheath.  I bought some leather that someone began to make a purse from.  I got it for a $1 which I was very happy about.

The person also etched some flowers which I wanted to keep for my sheath.  I used synthetic sinew for my stitching but I totally forgot to add the belt loop   so the loop is my work around.  I actually dont mind it plus it rides excellent.

Lots of learning curves for sure.  All and all I had fun and I am wet forming it now as I type.  My edged will need to be burnished then I'll add my homemade beeswax sealant to it.

Thanks for looking..

No sew small sheath for a Farmer:

I modeled this on the Spirit or Leatherman sheath and it worked out ok except the leather could be thicker to help with the sheaths rigidity. Aside from that I'm pleased with the result and it only took about half an hour from start to finish.

Tools used: Stanley knife, Sharpie, Hammer, rivets and riveting tools.

2 pieces of leather.

I used a piece of paper to make the template.  It was mostly trial and error to get the dimensions it came out a bit wider than expected.  Factoring in the welt I could have trimmed a lot more the make the sheath tighter.  I was worried the sheath was going to be to narrow but I should have trusted my template.

Finished a sheath for the Swisstool. Took a different approach this time, and I have to say I kinda like it. Makes for a thinner profile. This sheath is the same size as the one I made for the PST, yet the Swisstool is much larger. More efficient space usage I guess. :hatsoff:

Finished a sheath for the Swisstool. Took a different approach this time, and I have to say I kinda like it. Makes for a thinner profile. This sheath is the same size as the one I made for the PST, yet the Swisstool is much larger. More efficient space usage I guess. :hatsoff:

Did this for my rebar today, I had one for my spirit x and decided to give it another go

I was going to make a different design with a flap but then I figured that the locktabs will hold it in place

My prototype for the spirit x looks quite worn and sloppy in comparison

Thanks magentus!

I had a thought but don't really know where to place it. There are several of us here doing leatherwork of different style and knowledge, not just sheath but wallets, keychains and probably a lot of other stuff to. I think we should start a thread named something like "show us your leatherwork" in there all sorts of leatherwork can be show.

But in what forumsection does this fit?

I thought about that and I planed for it in the beginning but I made it really really snug and the locktabs helps a lot, they have to be cimpressed for it to go in to the sheath and provide God tension, I have held it upside down and shaken like a madman and there is no falling out

I am in the making of a one piece composite fabric Sheath for my MP600... I'll try to remember to post it there I get it done

for now it is a two layer thermopasted fabric piece with one 45° from the other (to get max strength having both weaving at different direction)

next step is to cut the this composite fabric to size and sew bias fabric along the edges.

My lack of skills continue but my enthusiasm is growing.  Here are 2 sheaths I decided to connect.  My though was to be able to carry a light, SAK, and Trad in one tidy package.  I may do a little touch up just to clean up the edges but its great in pocket so far.  So far my leather work has been function over looks but I think in time I'll get better.

Really cool idea to keep everything from rolling around in the pocket! 1 tip, I did find that worked for me, was to use a fork to mark out the stitch holes. Gets a little tricky around the corners but really helps. I love the sinew color paired with the dark soft leather. Nice job!
Also try out the saddle stitch, it looks a lot more complicated than it is to do, but is pretty much a running stitch like you did, but doesn’t have a visible beginning or end.

This video has a pretty good Explanation : the saddle stitch starts at about 2:50. I can’t find the video that really helped me understand, but once you try the 2 needle technique, it’s not too hard to get the hang of and looks great. PLUS you get to use your favorite MT to pull the needles past each other!!  Hope it helps.

Mrs m47 did it following my specifications : extremely simple pouch out of composite fabric like 'scuba knit'
She sews much better than I do, so she did the thing ;-)
To lower thickness and keep maximum elasticity, we did not add bias to the border, and simply burned it with a flame.
Fits perfectly into my CAP!

Yes, but I used a heat gun vs oven and just finger molded it vs a kydex press.

Pretty good. I made the fit very tight. I won't be taking the lighter out until it's empty, I think it'll keep the retention, even when I have changed the lighters inside a few times.

:tu:  Great color combo. Seem every time I stop carrying a lighter I find myself in a situation where one would have come in handy.  The mini bics for me are an easy carry so those are what I carry.  Non smoker so zippo doesn't make sense for me even with the inserts that keep the fluid from evaporating.  I keep my mini bic in my Skinth front area where the snap is.

I made them as a present and was really happy with the outcome -although making the scales was a pain in the...neck-all my respect to all sak and MT modders around here.

If left to my own devices when a bit of metalworking and some sheath-making are involved I tend to end up like

I've had my first try at a self made sheath. A pocket caddy for the back pockets.

I've added a tiny slot in the middle for a SAK scale tool. I have a Tortoise Firefly in there for now, but any scale tool would fit.

The stitching part hurt the most  ;)
It's not perfect but sturdy and reliable.

Yeah, I could have chosen a slightly thinner material maybe  :D

A while back a made a sheath for my spirit x and I quickly realized that the leather I used for the pouch part was to thin and soft but it holds up great except for stretching and not holding the tool as tight as I want. No problem when standing up but if I sit down or lay down on the couch the tool slips out. So I did a flap today. Mostly as a test and this sheath are my test subject. I tried a concept and it worked but then taking in and of my pants it slipped of the belt so I handed a push button and the other part on my belt, it worked and now I added a flap. So this is a test sheath and not the final product. My rebar sheath in the same style are more like the final version but it continues to evolve.

I thought about add a seem around the edge and made a few holes but change my mind and just keep the groove (remember the prototype mindset)

Very nice job! And very true, I bought a super cool flashlight was waaay more powerful then a aa maglite, and I liked combo sheaths, only problem was my sheath wouldn’t fit it, so the night I got home I spent like 4hrs making that one way to the left, not the best but it worked, it held what I needed, the wife was mad cause I had work the next day and I was up till like 12am, I so wanted a leather sheath but knew nothing about them nor did I have money to buy a custom one, so I looked into it and made that next piece of junk, very ugly but then again it worked, learned a few things and liked the concept of a pancake, so that’s what I went with, so I made the middle one, that middle one had to have seen a good 5yrs of field work, was even in my accident, the last two I just decided to make because I was bored, the last is for my sak, but the unique thing about that one is it’s not dyed with like rits, I found some way with I think vinegar and rust, stunk like wow, I kept it in the window between the window and the screen to get it to lose some of the stench, before moving to the next step and assembling it, I’ll admit there not the best looking but they did the job and I kept learning!!

And I think that farmerx is going to be my new must carry, so unless they come out with something even more perfect besides my custom I’ll be good on sheaths well maybe if I find a nice pancake for the farmerx, which that black one should fit,,

A couple of homemade belt sheaths for my Fieldmaster and Forester. The bigger Forester sheath has a space in the back for two DMT sharpening cards and loops for a ferro rod and aaa flashlight. The two sheaths are wet formed and stitched up with the inner strands of paracord and both are treated with bees wax to seal. They both have great retention.

Here’s another of my creations. Both the knife and sheath. The knife is made from O1 tool steel with a handle made from Cocobolo. Flat ground with a cold blue finish to give it the patina look. The sheath is made as a scout carry with a ferro rod incorperated. Right hand draw.

1, finding a bolt, I had to run out to the freezing garage, I found one but it was all old and rusty, but I turned around and saw a box and there were 4 brand new one in it and I was like SCORE :woohoo: :woohoo:
2, then making the layout, cause it has to be backwards, so I drew it with a marker on a piece of paper, once I got the just right I circled it and flipped the paper over, thus giving me the backwards layout,,
3, and lastly and the most annoying, matching the symbol to the paper, you’d get close and go over to the mirror to check, and naa, and of course marker doesn’t come off so you scribble really good all over the metal then wipe it really fast it comes right off! So after about 30min of fiddling I got a good match that I was pleased with,,

The rest is fun, get the tool out and just don’t hit the marker! After its deep enough clean it up and your set, your suppose to stick it in a oven thingy and get it blazing red then dump it in water to harden it but I’m not using this thing to stamp metal, just leather.. so no point..

Thanks for the hints. Mine should be easy to make as my initials are MW. Upside down, backwards, forwards, same same lol. As long as I don’t get too fancy. I’m sure I’ll still find a way to mess it up.

Well the nice thing with the bolt is if you screw up you can just file it flat and do it over, but only one or two times,, getting into the M or W you might be better off with a very small square file and just work the angles / \ / \ util you get the letters made, because a rotary tools going to be round, unless you use a disk and cut like a saw,, all depends on how you want to make it?
/\/\
\/\/
/\/\\/\/
/\/\/\/? Or something like this, it all depends on what you got going on, if you need any help or ideas don’t hesitate!

When I mark my tools at work for identification I use M , with all the legs touching
                                                                                   W

I do like the overlapped version you drew though. What are you using to press it into the leather? Arbour press? I have one, but it is rather large, that I use for pressing out bearings and such on my ATV.

So something like this? To stamp the mark? I just hit the bolt with a hammer, or do you mean to make the sheath?

Yes, like that minus the horizontal line. Two diamonds side by side.

And yes, to stamp the mark. I have seen a few videos with guys putting their makers mark on leather products with a stamp in an arbour press. I just assumed that there was a requirement to hold pressure on the stamp for a bit to set the image. If whacking it with a hammer works, well, I am a pro at hitting stuff with hammers lol.

Nope, leather needs to be a little damp, line it up as to where you want it and give it a good hit with a hammer! Your done,, if the stamp isn’t deep enough you gotta get the stamp back into its little grove and make sure you don’t double stamp it, but then just tap it again until you get the right depth, if you over strike it then well it’s going to be a little too deep.. I mean as far as a press the closest thing I’ve used are clamps, in order to make the sheath I posted I took two pieces of wood, made a cut to fit the knife, then put the leather over the knife and clamped the two pieces together stretching the leather out in order to fit the knife, then used the same setup to clamp the two pieces of leather when gluing, here’s a quick show of how,

That is how I wet formed both the Victorinox sheaths in the above pictures. I screwed a piece of wood protruding off my bench so I could clamp the three closed sides. Wrapped the knife tightly with saran wrap and worked thleather into the profile of the knife with a piece of rounded off dowel.

I think I found the basis for my stamp. Should work nicely. Have a 7/8” bolt around somewhere but in the abyss that is my shop.

Yeah I tried forming and stretching leather a few times that way but I just never could do it, but getting a form and just stepping on it or clamping it down worked for me!

Looks like I need to correct myself after browsing the SAKwiki. What I though I had was a Forester, when in fact it is a Rucksack as it has the sidelock. Discountinued in 2016 and replaced with the Forester which is a liner lock.

Here’s another of my creations. Both the knife and sheath. The knife is made from O1 tool steel with a handle made from Cocobolo. Flat ground with a cold blue finish to give it the patina look. The sheath is made as a scout carry with a ferro rod incorperated. Right hand draw.

Thanks Jpac! I didn’t quite get the heat treat right but it sharpens up razor sharp. Just doesn’t hold an edge as long as I would like. I’ve used it to skin a few deer and a coyote and the shape is very useful.

I have been looking at the Leatherman bit adaptor for my rebar for a long time but I think it's a bit expensive for what you get. I don't need bits with my MT that often and when I know I need it I just get a proper driver.. But then it's the time when I do need it.
Then I remember an old bacho branded MT that lives in my car and that I already have a bit adapter that fits most multitools I have. But I don't want to put that in my pocket unguarded.. So I made this last night when wife was away and the kids had their screentime

Nice and snug fit with the bits I use the most. It does look a bit wonky when the bits are in but the lines was perfectly straight when I made it. Looks worse in the pics but it still does the job

I do a lot of leather, my first tries were when I was a kid and needed something to carry a fixed blade I snatched from the yard at our farm. I wasn't really allowed (but wasn't explicitly forbidden also  ) to carry knives so no folding knife back then. I didn't have any idea what exactly I was doing, it was quite before the youtube tutorials era, but I got one of my mother's older purses which had a bit thicker bottom. Cut out a piece and stitched a sleeve style sheath for my knife. I was so happy I could now stick it in my pants (cause I didn't make a belt loop)  and walk around with it :D. Sadly I don't have pictures of it but it might still be around in that old house my grandmother lived in.
Quite some time has passed since then, I feel like I live in completely different world now. Yet some things don't change - I still love knives (and I now have considerate amount of them) and I still deal with leather (but now I use appropriate type of leather and know what I'm doing). And even though I now live in big (for our country) city I often sheath carry my knives and almost always my multitools. Here are some photos of my leatherwork, hope you enjoy them.

Those are some nice pancakes and basket weaving! Wow!
My first attempt was not even leather, I bought a nice flashlight and it was bigger then a mag lite so it wouldn’t fit in the combo sheath, so I spent like 3hrs making one out of stuff I had laying around, because I wanted to carry the new flashlight! Then I tried my first attempt at leather which totally sucked, but did the job, but then made a pancake and ended up using that for like a year cause I liked it, wasn’t the best but worked! I love pancakes! I just had one made for my sak

For about a year or so ago I made a sleeve for my bonus son to have his busscard in and the ability to tie it to his pack so he won't loose it at school, today my oldest doughter got a busscard so I made one for her as well. It's quite quick work but it should hold up and there is no point in going the extra mile on corners etc. It will live in her pack just like his tied in with paracord

Added a sheath / pocket to my boots.  Perfect for my Alox Pioneer(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210927/d4bba73a73bc84727df1495de79c00e7.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210927/786cbddecd50985d8a71fae6f84e4a1d.jpg)

Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk

Looks great! (But I'd fear of loosing it with the multiple bendings of the foot/ankle while walking)

Had a couple of small leather pieces around. If I stitched both together, it would make a very small pouch, not big enough for any "decent" EDC knife. I was thinking about getting a pouch for carrying my Executive or Director without scratching the scales with other pocket carry (coins, keys).

So, I got a thin strip of leather (about 1cm wide) and used it to stitch the two other pieces together. It had a longer end (didn't knew where to cut it exactly), so I used it to make a loop, with the top of a paper clip.

It carries up to a Farmer. Tried the Farmer X, but it was a stretch...

Here's its usual setup, with the paracord "chain" I made some time ago. It's great to get it out of the pocket.

The loop stitching is terrible, but I try to think of it as my first try. Hope I get the next one better.

I finally tried to make a wet molded sheath. Turned out nice enough -at the second try. The leather I used for my first try was too thin so it didn´t provide a good retention. On the second one I used thicher leather and the retention is really good.

I made all of it. Jewellery was the first kind of stuff I started making.

Thank you! It only took me two tries to make it -the leather I used for my first try was too so the retention was weak

I finally got round to ordering some new leather and making a new belt pouch. Specifically for a 3-4 layer SAK with the required additional thickness over my previous pouch. It's a horizontal pouch which is my preference, over built but then when you see the old version of this pouch (last pic) which has been on my belt almost every single day for 5 years (holy leather patina batman!), you can see why I like to build them strong! I built it a bit more simply than the previous one which had high end Horween leather, a fancier X stitch and had a smooth leather interior for an easier slide in and out but this one was me trying to work out if I still remembered how to make this model and I used a simpler Crazy Horse leather, simpler stitches, etc. It's not perfect by any means but it's more than sufficient till I have the energy to do it again in Horween with the posh stitching.

Wet molded looks so nice, it's sometimes hard to find the right thickness to let it have retention but still form nicely. Good work

Have been in need of a sheath that can carry either one of my big tools - Surge, ST300, Swisstool X.
Today the day came. Used the Victorinox and the Rebar sheaths for inspiration but made it all from one piece and used Chicago screws instead of rivets. Did not have a lot of time to spend so no colouring, no edge sanding and polishing, no protective waxes coating. But I made sure it’s sturdy and covered the metal pieces inside so they won’t scratch my tools. Overall pretty happy with the results.

I use a set of stitching irons to mark the stitch line which gives me a diamond shape to orient my awl. I don’t punch all the way through but only mark the surface and then finish the hole with awl while stiching. I scribe a light line on the leather as a guide for the irons.

There is also a bit of technique use when pulling the waxed thread. These are all saddle stitched so I am using two needles. I push the first needle through from the back side of the piece then cross the other needle behind it before pushing it through. Before pushing the second through I pull the thread from the first toward me so that the second needle rides behind that strand. When the second needle goes through I wrap the thread to the rear of of the stitch in an overhand motion. Then when I pull the thread tight I pull the backside thread away from me and slightly upwards and the front side thread toward me and slightly downward being careful to pull the thread to the same tension as I pull them tight.

They are pretty comfy. I am still learning how to position them for max comfort but these pancake sheaths hug the belt line nicely. If the knife or tool is too high it can push a little into any lovehandles one might have. More slant will correct that. Really, they can be oriented for the users comfort to a certain degree. I try to keep the top of the knife/tool not much higher than the top of the belt. The bottom is dictated by the length of the knife. The bottom of the PM2 sheath pictured rides just at the top of my back pocket on a pair of jeans. Don’t even feel it sitting or standing.

I have the iron punches, but I also use one of these, after scribing the line you just start it off at one end and wheel it around and it evenly spaces where to stitch, works great when you have to do curves vs just straight lines,

Not leather, just local Cannabis Sativa L.
My wife made me a rustic pouch.
It fits from XLT to 111mm.
Here with a Helmsman inside and my Rouge et Noir on the outside.
With the Great Seal of the State of Oklahoma.

Almost feel embarrassed to show my homemade pieces after seeing some of the creations here.   I've been known to utilize scrap leather to make something that I need,  even kept a knife in a cut off finger of an old glove.
Anyway, made this pocket slip to carry my latest Alox MiniChamp.

Nothing to be even the slightest embarrassed to show.  Thats a great little sheath and terrific use of scrap leather, white no less.

I'm still using one of the first slips I made which is fugly but so functional.  I might enjoy it more because of that  :D.

Here's my most recent sheath. Well, it's a card/money sheath, so you probably can call it a wallet, too.

My previous one could only carry four cards. In this one, I manage to carry nine (four in the left, more accessible side, five on the right). The leather is quite soft, maybe in time it can hold more cards, but the ones I have right now are more than enough.

At first, I had the bills stashed inside, behind a set of cards, folded in three. This made the wallet bulkier. I added the lighter coloured strap to the front, wher I can keep the bills just folded in half. Much more accessible and thinner in the pocket.

Explorer shown for scale. The wallet, with the bills, is thinner than this SAK.

Yup, started out as a piece of veg tanned leather. Made a template on card stock first then traced to leather. All cut, stamped, saddle stitched and finished by yours truly.

Thanks MP! I jumped in both feet then took a break because things were hectic. Came back a bit rusty and messed up the basket weave on this sheath for my rehandled Sharpfinger. About four stamps in I screwed up the pattern so I just continued the screw up until it was its own pattern. Lol. Came out not too bad so finished it and it is a functional sheath.

Dang nice job, it would work for me, great work on the stitch work and edging, I can make them functional but not pretty, this basically started because I switched from a maglite, to a huge double 123a battery flashlight seen in the pic, I liked my double carry like the one attached to the backpack, so I found junk and whipped up the top one staying up till like 12am all so I could have something to carry the next day with the flashlight next to it, then moved on, that bottom one was my last piece, and took the longest, I didn’t have anything to turn it and well I wanted it black, so I had to use a mixture of a few thing in which included vinegar, which stunk up the house, and it took like over a week to two weeks, so it sat in the window, between the the glass and screen, as you can see it changed to black, the smell faded but for some reason it looks twisted, yet fits perfect, but that beat up middle one was my pride and joy at the time, I got the flap just right for the leatherman unlike the screwup in the one before, and I used that thing for like 3yrs straight, the next one which I call the box, cause well let’s face it, it looks like a box, it worked but never got used, cause well, it looked like something Batman might use from back in the day, still have all of them somewhere, but I just carry a sak, those sheaths I’ve altered, just ripped out all the stitching and then re stitched them with diff colors, I mean come on what looks better then a black sheath with black stitching? Red! Double stitched so it shows! The kid loved it when he got his first sak, especially when I switched out one scale to black, his first sak and it was custom to him, so he named it Deadpool! I got a free sak of the same so I switched out both scales to blue did the same with the stitching and out in blue again double stitched, and since it was a large sak I called it the beast from X-men, was one of my fav, here’s a pic,,

I like the restitch on those sheaths. Compliments the knives very well.  :hatsoff:

Pictured below is my first sheath. Rocked it for about 3 years. Functional, yes. Attractive, not really. The leather was procured from a craft shop and I’m guessing the aim was the scrapbookers. Chrome dyed and fairly soft. I originally made it for my Victorinox Hiker but it was stretching so I upgraded to a Fieldmaster adding a layer and tightening up the fit. I marked the stitching with a dinner fork and stitched it using the inner strands from paracord.

I eventually ended up making more sheaths from the same leather bought in 8”x8” pieces. Progressively they got a bit better until I dove headfirst into the craft and bought some better tools and materials. Then I started seeing more professional results. I bought a leather awl, better needles, veg tanned leather, edgers and groovers, dyes and finishes as well as edge kote and finally stamps.  I also watched a lot of the artisans on youtube and followed their lead. Sometimes taking my iPad to the shop to follow along. Every one I make gets a bit better I think and honestly it is because I am now taking my time and not rushing the project as well as paying better attention to the details and planning out my project instead of just winging it. And I still botch that. Evidence is the screwed up basket weave on the Sharpfinger sheath.

Finally got my Trapper that I ordered a while ago and today had a chance to work on an open top belt sheath for it. I visited my local leather shop yesterday and picked up some supplies. Among them was this slightly different basket weave which adds some curvature rather than all straight lines giving a more three dimensional look.

Not nearly in the same class, but here's a little pouch I made to carry my vintage Tourist. I made it a little larger than needed, so I can use it for other SAKs (no problem getting a Farmer in it) or any of the small folders I carry from time to time.

Can I ask you something? I make my sheaths from tanned leather, but apply no product on them. Because of that, sometimes the copper pieces in some knives, after being stored there, gain that green (verdigris?) layer, due to oxydation. Is there any product(s) you apply to your leather, so as not to cause this?

Thanks!

I’d agree hobby but at a professional level! I can do my basics but they look nothing like yours, yet one other thing I did was take company made and customized them, as you can see in the pic I ripped all the stitching out and then restitched it with red, but then also added stitching around the flap to give it a little more umph,, but the top one is one I made from scratch.. I didn’t have any dye, so what household liquid changes the tan to black, vinegar? All I know is it spent like two weeks between the window and screen cause it stunk!

Hobby, but at a professional-like level  :pok:
They look gorgeous  :ahhh

 Thank you!  :hatsoff:

Very nice work!

  :tu:

Can I ask you something? I make my sheaths from tanned leather, but apply no product on them. Because of that, sometimes the copper pieces in some knives, after being stored there, gain that green (verdigris?) layer, due to oxydation. Is there any product(s) you apply to your leather, so as not to cause this?

Thanks!

I am still exploring products to apply to protect the leather and the object. I like using acrylic Resolene to seal the leather and weather proof it. I mix it roughly 50/50 with water and mix then apply with a flannel like cloth in a circular motion. In addition to protecting the leather it stops dye rub off on clothes. I would imagine that it would protect against oxidation for anything inside the sheath if the inside of the sheath is treated. Although,  it might be best to store knives that tarnish easily seperate from their sheath.

Lol never would have thought to use vinegar. I am a strong proponent of customizing and making something your own. The red restitch looks great!

Yup, that's what I'm doing now.
