Title: Fisher Space Pens
Post by: parnass on April 09, 2016, 03:36:39 PM
I am a recent convert to Fisher Space Pens. Shown are a raw brass Bullet, a Telescoping Space Pen, and a Zero Gravity pen.

I wanted a pen that could write at any angle and in low temperatures because I often walk distances outside in the cold.   The Telescoping pen rides in my shirt pocket, the Bullet pen in a jacket, and the Zero Gravity serves at home.

I just got myself a Chrome Bullet with clip this week. I really wanted it to be able to have a front pocket pen for when I'm not carrying a bag or such. Had some trouble with my local retailer though, for some reason the clip version came without the clip in the box. They were totally super great to work with though and two days later I had the clip too.

I've been a fan of the Bullet for years as it is the only one that has worked whenever I needed it, didn't freeze with long exposure to cold weather and basically everything I've thrown at them. I've tried a number of pens and keep coming back to the Bullet.

The Bullet pens are cool and compact, but they require two hands to deploy. I’m more of a Cap-O-Matic fan; simple, slim, tough, and one-hand. I especially like the M4B Military/Police in matte black. Carry it on the outside of my EDC bag, tucked into the straps, and it disappears so well that I don't worry about someone swiping it.

I had two bullets, somehow one disappeared. But the one I still have cracked, still works, just when you open it and put the cap on to make it full length you can see the crack. I also have a full length clicky one idk the name of it, i think some military one? But I think there great, some times the ink gets a little clotty, but still great! I just find it funny how we spent so much money to invent a pen that can write in space and yet the Russian just go ahead and use a pencil, lol..

That's an urban legend, sorry.  :D  Fact is, a pencil would be a HORRIBLE idea on a spacecraft: imagine how much havoc stray graphite powder would wreak on electronics? :ahhh

From the Fisher Space Pen web site:

"When the astronauts began to fly, like the Russians, they used pencils. But the lead sometimes broke and became a hazard by floating in the capsule's atmosphere where there was no gravity.  It could float into an eye or nose, or cause a short in the thousands of exposed electrical connections in the spacecraft.   Since the fire on Apollo 1, which three Astronauts died, NASA required a writing instrument that would not burn in a 100% oxygen atmosphere."

Right. However, Fisher didn't create their pressurized ink pens *for* NASA, the were already selling them; they did happen to be in a good position when NASA wanted a replacement for pencils.

For the same reasons, the Soviets switched to pens of some type as well; heck, they might've just imported Fishers, or as with so many other western inventions, just created their own version.

I've used the cheaper Space Tec ones for years and they're a pretty good pen actually for plastic. Not as cool I know but have worked well for me.

I don't think there's a version of the bullet with a clip is there? I like to have a pocket clip.

IIRC they *all* come with pocket clips, but the classic Bullet that's rounded at both ends is notorious for the clip falling off. There's another variation of the bullet with a squared-off back end, and the clip stays on that one just fine.

I've also used a space tec pen for the last year or so now and it never lets me down. It's subjected to dirt dust oil and grease often and always works well. They are quite robust and I prefer the clicky type.

I had the black and red one in your picture and I couldn't get rid of it fast enough.  The button and ink cartridge used to get stuck at full extension and was virtually useless.  Maybe I got a bad one, but it was so bad I never bothered to try again.  I don't even know where that pen got to- I might have given it away, I might have left it somewhere.... no idea.  I'm just glad it's gone.

Hmmmm....I never had that experience with the Space Tec Grant. And I've probably 5 or 6 of them around the house and when I still worked the jail, it was my daily pen for 10 years and was used a bunch every day. You may have just gotten a bad one.

I'm going to have to check the Fisher site for others with pocket clips. I always thought the bullet looking ones never had one.

Maybe I'll give them another shot based on your input.  Maybe it was just being outside in harsh weather for extended periods that caused problems?  Or maybe I got a bad one.  Working in a jail is predominantly inside (unless it's a penitentiary and you are on the wall) so that might be the big difference.

The Bullets usually come with a clip on pocket clip, but as mentioned above, the Bullet is tapered and smooth so sometimes they don't hold too well.  That having been said, my first one (a gift from a member back in the SOSAK days) is still going strong and the pocket clip has never fallen off of it.  I must have wedged it on pretty good when I got it....

My usual EDC "emergency" pen - which never gets used - is on the Victorinox Manager.  But when not carrying the Manager, I'll carry a chrome Space Pen.  As I recall, the fine refill is said to be less gloopy than the medium.

Personally, I prefer a big, bold blue line. (Old habit from the days of faxes and B&W-only laser printers, mark-up/edits in blue were more obvious compared to the black print.)

This thread made me think perhaps a good idea for a sticky would be a list of all then pens that accept the Fisher Space Pen refills?

I know that guys are fond of many different pen types, but would also like the ability to use the Fisher refill.

Or maybe not? Lol.

Well, my Fisher Refills came with an adapter for the Parker standard "G2". I moved one of them into my Parker Jotter, works great.

The Uniball Power Tank's get good reviews, are pressurized etc, and get good reviews. A lot cheaper too.

I have a Chrome Fisher Bullet. I'd heard they often lost their clips so I wedged mine on there pretty tight (downward pressure on the pen, using the clip as a "stop" on the edge of a Kitchen cabinet). It never came loose.

I always loved the ergonomics of the Parkers, but the plastic barrel would *always* end up cracking by the threads.

After hearing lotsa good things about the Stainless Steel version, I got one, and compared to my old ones, it's built *solid*. I'd carry it more, but it's so purty, I'm afraid I'll lose it.

I have been using Fisher Space Pens since the '70s. Mainly the CH4 version which looks almost the same as the original one (AG7) used in space.
The Fisher Space Pen PR Catridges all come with a small plastic adapter and can be used in Parker style ballpoint pens.
The Fisher Space U Catridges fit all the multicolor pens.
The Fisher Space C Catridges can be used with Cross type pens.
The Fisher Space PS Catridges fit some of the Paper Mate type Pens.

I had a capomatic that I lost on a plane  >:( not the most expensive pen but it was a gift from my wife. It was nice but I felt that it was a touch on the weak side and seemed to bend a little if I had it in my jeans pocket. I now have an AG7 and the thing is tough. I also have a stainless Parker jotter with a fisher refill for use at work. I have been through 1 refill in it so far and it works well for jotting notes in a notebook and works well on our site permit forms when they get dirty, but is not comfortable for writing for longer periods. I want to try the fine point fisher refills next

Well, I only have one, pic related, and I don't really like it. It's a great pen and I would recommend a Bullet to anyone but with this particular model there are two problems. The first is my own fault for fidgeting to much with the O-ring and breaking it but the other is that the some of the sleek look is lost due to the step for posting the cap. The models where the cap simply slides on to the unbroken line of the pen look better imho. As for the full size pens they look great but if I was looking for something like that I would seriously consider getting a Fisher Refill and any pen that uses the Parker G2 refills since Fisher supplies an adapter with their refills.

The Fisher Zero Gravity pen is made of brass inside and covered with a rubbery surface which makes it easy to grip.  The American Flag and lettering are sharp and attractive.  Due to its weight, I use it at home.

The Fisher Telescoping pen is shorter than most pens so it rides more easily when it is completely contained in a shirt or pants pocket.  I like the fact that exposing the tip requires merely pulling out the plunger instead of removing a separate cap.  It's easier to deploy and there's no chance of losing a cap.

I haven't used the Bullet much, but keep it tucked inside a jacket pocket in case the Telescoping pen runs out of ink.

None of these 3 Fisher models feels cheesy.

I have (had) three, a fancy red lacquer version, the chrome with knurled finger grip, and a plain black model.

The lacquer model began to loose its finish as result of chemical on  my hand, and my habit of rubbing the pen with my thumb during conference calls, or meetings.   eventually, the finish exposed the entire pen as a brass with a ring .  Picture of it is in a earlier posting with my vagabond and black model.   This was my favorite, the patina was lovely. Was,because it was lost and never found by me, another patron of the restaurant visiting, who would not admit finding it a few minutes after I realized it was missing from my pocket.

Now the black model is working the same duty as that brass and it is developing its own patina.

The chrome model, is at home, just to bright and pretty, distracts from my pretty knifes that ride in my pockets.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170321/a09ae48d14955c4d06287ed19e7b97d2.jpg)

Seriously interesting, I just might have to make something to fit my needs, here's a pic, just like I use the paracord thingy to hang the pioneer-x, do the same with a little tab and grommet so it will hang into the pocket, and see if I can get those pens to fit. And of course it's leather, it only gets better with age!

Funnily enough I was looking into getting a new Fisher Space Pen recently.

When I was an undergrad I received a Chrome Space Pen from my grandmother and used it for several years. When I first started using it, I found it hard on the hand, even when posted. I got used to it though, and it was my constant companion.

I took it with me for luck when I went for an interview for my Education program, however after the interview it must have slipped out of the slick pockets of my dress pants because I never saw it again (I did get into the program, though!).

I looked into getting the Brass version, however my attention was swayed when I tried looking into getting the Orange version they released a few years ago (unavailable everywhere I looked), which led me to discovering the Lamy Al-star in Copper Orange, which is now in the post on its way to me. I'm almost certain that the fountain pen won't fill the role that I wanted the Fischer to (tough, reliable, compact), but we'll see how things turn out!

So my choice of compact pen is narrowed down to a classic Bullet, or Telescopic, or Explorer(X-750).
I think that I prefer the caps, like on the Bullet and Explorer.

Sooo... Colour choice help?    :pok:
With or without grooves, on the Bullet?

I like the way the matte black Bullet will wear, but it has no grooves, would that be a problem when it wears?

The Titanium versions appear to be sticky stuff/fingerprint magnets.  :ahhh
(Though I know that they won't wear).

Chrome is flashy, possibly too flashy.

I could solve any grip problems on the Bullet with a tad of heat shrink.   :D

Explorer has some reports of slightly looser caps?

Too many choices.  :ahhh  :-\

Feels like I'm the thread killer now. Three uninterrupted posts in a row?  :o

My Matte Black Bullet arrived today. I feel like when I got my first SAK, or my first pocket light, feeling that I just got something that I will use for a loong time.  :salute:

Personal comparison with the Ti Rainbow finish, some of what I say about the Rainbow finish presumably applies to other shiny finishes like chrome.
Show content
Personally, the matte black feels more substantial for some reason, which is weird. You'd think that the model with the Ti coating would feel stronger?
Probably its just because its Black!  :D
OTOH, the matte black finish would be ever so slightly thicker than the Rainbow finish, so that might explain it.

Compared to the Rainbow finish, the matte black is "rougher"? The cap slides on and off both ends with slight noticeable friction, compared to the smooth action of the cap on the Rainbow. This is easily understood though, the Rainbow finish is smoother to start with. YMMV and I like it this way.

Without the grooves, the Matte Black is more comfortable(but may feel more slippy) to write with. This is very much up to personal preference.

On the other hand, its a fact that shiny finishes like the Rainbow one will show oil and fingerprints much more than Matte Black.
The Rainbow finish(and other shiny finishes I presume) will feel oilly to the touch easily.

I got mine with a clip, which doesn't feel like it will go anywhere.  :)
I replaced the Medium refill with a Fine refill as soon as I got it(fine is much better!) and put the Medium in a modded Zebra Z-Grip.
Posted, its comfortable enough for me to write off a page or so at a time. But more than that, is the "coolness" and "twirling in your fingers" feel of it. I like playing with this particular pen.
I can see myself using this very pen(if I don't lose it!  :ahhh ) in a few years time. And I'm anticipating when it wears and turns a brassy colour.  Better with age indeed!

Do you already have one in another colour? What are you waiting for?  :pok:

I'm still wondering about the durability of these pens, as far as I can see, the only thing that could happen is that the cap gets loose? Will this pen last me as long as a SAK?  :climber:

I have had mine for over 27 years, as long as you do not damage the o-ring with some type of solvent, you should not have any issues.
My current EDC is my Black one, it was my 2nd purchase, early 90s or late 80s.

Pocket carry with my Micra is causing some wear yet a lovely Patina I can enjoy.  I do miss my brass model that originally was a dark red lacquer. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170406/ecb424f47e6711d910dae0d6dcc7e5ff.jpg)

I ordered a chrome bullet today, ´the o-ring on my grip model broke, so now I'm going for the standard version. The rubber parts were clearly the weak points on the model especially since I'm prone to fiddle with them. Other than that they seem more or less bulletproof, there are hardly anything to break on them.

So here comes a slightly overdue comparison picture of my two Bullets. I haven't moved over to carrying my new one since I'm still considering whether to try to keep it looking nice with a sleeve of some sort. That's the trouble with chrome, it looks great but doesn't age very well imho. I have been writing a little with it though and I'm really happy with the grip it has considering that there's no rubber to hold on to as on my old one.

Nice!  8)
Are the grip sections the same diameter?

I suppose that its one advantage for matte black and similar colours, when they wear, they don't look too bad.

(Image from The Pen Addict (https://www.penaddict.com/blog/2014/2/19/fisher-space-pen-bullet-review), I'm still waiting for my pen to look like this.   )

And of course, the raw brass and lacquered brass pens will not visibly wear at all, just develop a patina.

Without actually measuring them the grips seem to be the same diameter, might be a millimeter or so of difference.

Great review Pablo. After many years on being distinctly underwhelmed by a grey titanium space pen which spent most of it's time sneaking through my pocket linings into my jacket and then being a flipping nuisance to extract I have become a convert and they're now my EDC after years with roller balls, fountain pens etc. I've still got that original space pen but the clip keeps it securely in place. I'll get a pic and post a few thoughts later. In the meantime here's my Black Ti Nitride with my Vic Explorer for Four Layer Friday !
Title: Re: Fisher Space Pens
Post by: Fast Bill on April 29, 2017, 09:33:01 PM
I've gone Black for Spartan Saturday and here's some bullet pens for good measure which Squeak is admiring. Grey titanium, with and without shuttle emblem, black titanium nitride and purple passion. The grey titanium is very slippery in the hand or pocket and to be frank the shuttle is a bit of a disappointment and not brilliantly fitted. But I you can't beat a good bit of grey Ti.

I love the black of the black titanium nitride and have a purple cartridge in that one. Which brings us to the Purple Passion. Just love the colour of that too but with black ink. I lost my first purple passion and just had to replace it.

The grey titanium without the shuttle was my first space pen and it was only many years later that I picked up the purple passion on a whim and became hooked. I gave away my brass bullet a few years back and I really must replace that. I loved the brass look. They have been very good writing companions at countless meetings and been great to fiddle with when those meetings get boring. They write well and sit comfortably in the hand. Reliable and tough they can cover formality or a tough day out on site. And they can sit in a pocket or clipped on a shirt pocket. So .... What's not to like eh?

They are all very nice.  8)
Doesn't the shuttle catch on stuff?

I tend to like colours that, if they wear, whats underneath won't look bad.

Do you find any difference in the "feel" of things like the tightness of the caps?

The shuttle hasn't hung up on anything so far ... but it's a pressed fitting and a bit loose so it could catch I guess. I don't carry that one with a clip so we'll see how it goes. The lacquer on the purple passion has taken a few knocks but I'm happy it's got that hard working look. Titanium nitride is pretty hard and should last my needs and then some so wear is just wear for me.

Practically the Ti nitride cap feels a bit different when posted to that on purple or the grey Ti and the spiralling on the barrel of the titanium nitride feels like a crisper cut but to be honest the biggest difference is that the grey Ti are just such slippery suckers. They almost leap out of your hands. Did I mention that before?

Yes, once or twice.  :P

My pen has gotten its first battle scars.  :drink:
(http://i.imgur.com/filDnSX.jpg) (http://imgur.com/filDnSX)
I dropped the cap, which presumably landed on the lip, deforming it slightly, enough to score the finish when I put the cap on the end.  :-\
The slight deformation(which I might have not noticed if it was not scoring the finish) has been corrected, but the scoring is here to stay.
The ground I dropped the cap on was an angled metal trailer door, in case you were wondering. So the circumstances were a little unusual...

+1

I think in Chris Hadfield's book, An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, he mentions using a Sharpie in space. So Mr Fisher was getting a bit ahead of himself in the marketing stakes. I guess it's good he at least asked NASA first before going out and printing that. I'm sure in Apollo 13, you can see Kevin Bacon with an AG-7 but I think Tom Hanks uses a pencil to write down the guidance calculations.

I had a Capomatic which was a gift from my wife, but lost it on a plane  which I was super bummed over

Thankfully, she bought me an AG-7, which is my non work EDC pen. At work I use a Parker Jotter with a Fisher cartridge

I don't think you'll get many, or any at all that would disagree that the Fisher ink isn't as good as others for pure writing, however the Fisher ink excels in harsh environments, whether it be temperature, moisture etc, or even dirty / oily environments. Its not just zero gravity, if you need to write on anything above your head or at a funny angle you don't need to worry about keeping the pen in the correct orientation to allow ink flow due to gravity.
At my work, we use carbon copy permit books, and after they have been used on the job they can get filthy, and my Fisher ink has no trouble where others do. At home, or in the office, then anything will do, and if I was writing lots, I'd rather use Parker or Zebra or Sheaffer ink

At my work, we use carbon copy permit books, and after they have been used on the job they can get filthy, and my Fisher ink has no trouble where others do. At home, or in the office, then anything will do, and if I was writing lots, I'd rather use Parker or Zebra or Sheaffer ink
And in addition, did you ever try the Fine fisher refill? The Medium refill is the one that comes standard, and the Fine writes a little nicer(no gobbing or anything) than the Medium.

+1 to this. The Fine refill is much better IMHO

I have a fine in my AG-7, but at work I just need it to write, so use the Medium. No finesse required.

Over the past two weeks, I've added a X-750 to my daily carry, since I don't always have my lab coat on me; I find it write very well, without the globing I had experienced with a bullet, years back.

FYI, the X-750 uses the same refill as the Bullet, and its only some Medium point refills that are prone to gobbing ink at the tip, Fine point(which looks like medium.  ::) ) refills seem to be immune.

When I (eventually) run through my medium refill, I do intend on replacing it with a fine point; perhaps my comparison is unfounded, though, as the bullet to which I refer was found on the ground down in Key West, I do not know how hard of a life it had lived prior to me picking it up. :D

Its not bad but as with anything new in pocket I'll have to test drive it for a little bit.  I figure within a week I'll know if I actually like the feel in pocket.  I keep my wallet in my front left pocket so this will ride in front right for now.

Totally stole the idea on from this thread.  There are some great simple sheaths that house a SAK and pen or even inexpensive full size pen slip case that can be cut down I imagine.

An interesting thread.  I thought I had contributed but it looks like my memory is bad or maybe I contributed to another similar thread.  I have a bullet pen and carry it most of the time.  I find it a bit slim and slippery but it works for short notes etc.  I have a trekker but find that it is just too short for writing very much.

Very recently I found a pen similar to a bullet pen however it is a bit thicker and better to write with.  The refill was dry and not available locally as it was a Schneider Topball.  Ordering from ebay would be quite expensive and not worthwhile.  The schneider refill is fairly large so I was able to make a spacer for the white extension on a fisher refill and also make a small aluminium sleeve to fit near the nib end.  As a result the "new" pen now fits a fisher refill quite nicely and  I like it.

I would have photos except that photobucket is acting up and I cannot seem to upload right now.  I used a lathe to make the two small pieces to adapt the fisher refill to the pen however it is quite easily done (although maybe not quite as elegant), with a bit of masking tape built up in strategic areas.

I am able to get onto photobucket finally so here are the photos related to the above.  First is the pen with it's original (empty) refill:

This shows the fisher refill with small aluminium adapter that slides on to the ball end and the white spacer taped in place.  I made a small insert for the spacer as it was too short if pushed on fully.  Cound have made a new spacer but there was no point as this works well.

Another photo of the fisher refill with the aluminium adapter and the short piece that fits inside the white plastic spacer.

It would be easy to adapt a lot of pens to the fisher refill without going to much trouble. Fisher refills are available most places and in my view work very well.

I feel you, I had one and somehow just lost it, after so long I just broke down and bought a new one, which I still have today but the tube is cracked, still works and all but sometimes just comes apart. That's why I bought a semi imitation plastic one, works kinda the same as the bullet, comes apart and then doubles in size, but uses just a simple bic ink cartridge, just what I need, and wont feel bad if I lose it just out like $3.. don't get me wrong, I still got my space pens on my nightstand and desk!

Regarding the chrome/burgundy pen with modified fisher refill it was actually a promotional pen for a fastening sales business.  It's made in China but very nicely done.  It's a little bit bigger around than a bullet space pen and more comfortable for my use.  There is no manufacturers name on it.

I have used the bullets in the past, and I have a Fisher Stowaway ... somewhere  but they all tried to do a Houdini on me.

They are very aptly named, as very often there's a space where the pen used to be  ::)

I still like pressurised pens, but these days it's the much cheaper Tombow Airpress for me. When you click the pen to deploy the pen, it pressurises the cartridge within. If doing a lot of writing, you might have to repressurise it at some point by clicking the pen off and on again, but I don't mind this at all. The pens are cheap, comfortable, and have a decent clip too.  :tu:

My view point on the space pen, the stuff I love about it, is their extreme reliability and (to a lesser extent) their durability. Not writing quality (I consider it good though, with the fine point refill  :tu: ) or it's escape artist training.  ::)

In the months I've had mine, it's seen periods with no use, just tagging along in my fifth pocket, sheath or bag, and it's only skipped like twice.  :salute:
Both times were after very heavy use(strangely), and very brief.

Show content
Particularly relevant for people living in frigid areas( Like the boss  ) or scorching areas, is the wiiiide operating temperature of the ink. It can be used in conditions where you need special equipment just to be in.
I believe that the AG-7, same refill as the bullet but with no O-rings or non metal parts, can be used in the vacuum of space. This is relevant because for some reason, a pen that works O.K in outer space  works supremely well on Earth, at least in terms of reliability.  :D

Durability and quality, how many pens can you get for $20 are of brass construction? I think that the Bullets are to other pens like SAKs are to multitools and knives.... Really cheap for the extreme quality.  :salute:

Basically, it's a pen that you can depend on, some other pens may be more comfortable or lay down better lines, but the bullet will be working well when all others fail.... If you don't lose it.
Personally, I think that the security of my bullet with clip is fine. No way is it running out of my sheath, bag or fifth pocket.  8)

I don't use mine often but when I do I expect it to work.  This is what I discovered when I needed a pen yesterday.  Thankfully I had my manager on me which has never had this issue in roughly 5 years of carry.  I tossed both space pen inserts and used a modded zebra one.

Anyone else?

I'll have to fetch them from the bin.  I got the pen cleaned out but I was really bummed.  I carry it in my pocket inside a leather sheath I made.  Glad the ink was only leaking within the pen.

Resistance to leaking in heat is the reason lots of people buy these, to have a pen that they can leave in the hot car without fear of leaks.  :)

I'm looking at NASA documentation from 1973, the refill is rated for use from -46°C(-50°F) to 71°C(160°F). If it gets that hot in Cali I'm staying well away.  :D

I think that it's more likely a flaw in the fit of the refill metal bits.

On my space pen refill and probably a lot of other refills, I see light ink staining around the joint where the chrome coloured tip fits into the brass tube. Purely cosmetic, and not noticable because refills tend to be inside a pen.  ::)
It's understandable because the ink is under 50 psi after all... Alohas' refills might have been from a bad batch.
In any case, Fisher has a great warranty.  :tu:

I've had the medium tips glob a bit if you don't use them regularly and I seem to recall I had one leak a long while ago at a time when the pen never got used. But I didn't feel it was much different to my experiences with some other refills

My Fisher Cap-o-matic snapped in half.

I had a cap-o-matic before I lost it and got an AG-7. I did have the feeling that if I'd sat on the cap-o-matic it would have bent or broken. I'm sure I did bend it slightly having it in the pocket of my jeans. Not so with the AG-7, which is very sturdy

Brass Space Pen, with a lovely patina and a AG-7. The mechanism on the AG-7 is very addictive, so much so, that I can't take the pen to meetings since I would just end up playing with it.

Love the Bullit. Carry one every single day but as a backup that I know will work when I need it. As others have experienced I have lost one due to a vanishing act. Just for reference the bullit I lost did not have a clip installed. I replaced it with a brass bullit with clip and it’s been sitting in the bottom of my pocket for years now. I love using it (with fine point replacement) and knowing it’s there if needed.

I also had a cap o matic that snapped in half in my front pocket. Fischer replaced it for free!

The fine ones have always been ok for me to. I don't like the medium, to me they don't feel right when writing, kind of gritty.

I had a bullet break on me recently while uncapping it. I somehow pulled the "grip" off of the brass connecting thread. I have no doubt I'll be able to fix it with some epoxy and some tapping but coupled with a recent resurging preference for gel ink (and the Parker rollerball) it has left the bullet out of rotation.

Well, after a couple weeks, it's starting to get a little wear. Hard to photograph, though.

When I first got this a few years back, I never carried it because I just didn't like the idea of a cap. Now I'm starting to come around for a few reasons.

One, I carry a separate clicky pen at work (modified zebra f -701) which takes away the inconvenience of dealing with a cap when I often need to use a pen one handed.

Two, I realized that the cap helps keep the tip protected and lint out for edc pocket carry.

Three, since the cap is friction fit, it is fairly quick and easy to open and use.

I've also found myself more and more impressed by the design of the pen in general. When closed, it's compact size makes it just disappear in the pocket. When I started carrying it, it goes completely unnoticed until needed. Then, when opened and the cap posted, it's pretty darn close to a regular sized pen.

An added plus is the solid, all metal build. Outside of the o-ring, there's really not anything to wear out.

At the end of the day, I think it's the pen version of the SAK.

I had an interesting revelation yesterday.

I had used Pilot G2s pretty much exclusively for about 15 years until I decided I wanted a non-disposable metal pen last month.  That's when I did my zebra f-701 mod, which uses a fisher fine refill.

Now, I always considered gel ink to provide a superior writing experience in most situations, and the fisher was a compromise solution to get a metal pen.  I noticed right away that the fisher refill did not lay down a very dark line compared to the G2, though it did write smoothly.  I didn't really do any head to head comparisons though, I just switched over.

Yesterday, after using the fisher equipped zebra exclusively at work for a month, I had to sign something and someone handed me a G2.  I immediately noticed that it seemed very scratchy.  So, back in my office, I tried again with a different G2 on different paper, and again it seemed scratchy.  Not overly so, but noticeably more so than the fisher.  It still layed down a much darker, wetter looking line, but there was definite rolling resistance. I then compared it to a uni-ball signo 207 gel ink.  That wrote very smoothly, no scratchiness at all.

Basically, the fine tip fisher refill seems to write as smoothly as the uni-ball 207, and the pilot g2 (0.7mm, black) wrote noticeably more scratchy.  This really surprised me as ball-points are not known for their writing experience.  I still think the lines from the 207 and G2 look nicer, but the experience of using the fisher seems to be right up there with the 207 (which I've read is one of the better gel inks available).

So, more love for the space pen!

I know, right?  :ahhh (to both counts)

I had to order mine from .co.uk, because there is no .ie.

I paid a bit over €21 for the clip-less raw brass version, and it will be my main pen for the foreseeable future.
I’m using a “fine” blue refill that I bought in a local shop for €8 last year, and it has lasted for a lot of writing so far. (I do the writing for my studies with it, if that gives an indication.  :ahhh )
I figure that I get good value from them, considering all the writing I do.

The refills claim to write 15,000 feet (4,500 m) of words with reasonably sized handwriting... and that comes from a NASA document I posted in page 3, so I’m inclined to trust it.

That's looking good, Pabs!

Here are mine. The bullet is carried everyday loose in pocket. Both Zebra F-701s have been modified with a metal nock from the F -402 and have space pen refills. The middle one I carry at work since it's much easier to use a clicky quickly, and they don't allow capped pens in the labs.

The zebra on the right I just got Friday. Found it on sale in a store, so I picked it up to use the extra 402 nock (those pens come in two packs) so now I have a back up. I need to get a fine refill, as it has the leftover medium refill originally from the bullet. I may try blue this time.

You'll get them back if you can prove you can be a responsible young man.

I'm a die-hard Fisher fan. I've used them everywhere and they just keep on working.

The gold retractable is probably 30 years old, give or take a year or so. It is my favorite.

The black one is great and has been on many adventures. Not as nice as the gold one, but works and works, and work and works.......

Can I join the Space Pen club? :D

First photo is my usual front pocket pen. Space Pen bought in 2012. Still using the same ink tank after 6 years. :ahhh
The second, third, and fourth photos are of a shuttle bullet model. Given to me by an old flame for my birthday in 2011. She gave some of the best gifts(oh, how I miss her. But, I digress).
The little gold shuttle is a nice touch on the polished chrome.

The selection was quite limited, OK?!

Actually I kind of like the pink plastic gemstone. It’s only glued on anyway.

I personally wouldn't want the gemstone regardless of color, but the pen looks nice!

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the cap o matic.  I believe they make a raw brass version as well.

Glue?

I tried that. The Shuttle sits on two pressed metal lugs (so it does move a little anyway) and should rest quite close to the pen tip.

Short answer seems to be the Titanium grey space pen was too slippery for the super glue to adhere to so... no

I think you're probably right. Oxidise in any sort of atmosphere I suspect (certainly titanium does for a protective oxidised layer pretty quickly I recall). The good news is that your plastic Rose Crystal will stay lovely for eternity.

Yesterday, I received in the post a Random Act of Kindness from Nix!  :ahhh :hatsoff: I'm not sure why anyone would send me a lovely pen just like that, given my pen history....  :P A huge thank you to Nix for his generosity!  :salute:

I thought that this would be the right place to post it, to keep space pen stuff in one thread? But maybe I should make a new thread?  ???

The contents:

Look at that space pen.... :sa: And sticker and patch.

Another look:

Awesome....
It kind of looks like a "ninja-astronaut" pen, as Nix put it. :tu:
Made of brass, lovely grippy rubber coating, slightly triangular grip section, and a big clicky button with a click noise that makes thunder sound wimpy.  :D The clip is very nice to use too, compared to the one on the Cap-o-matic!

Back to that clicking noise...
From the "stealth" look of the pen, you'd expect it to be stealthy, when it's time to click it for the first time...
But in fact it's the opposite.
It has the one of the loudest clicks of any pen I've ever heard. It's right up there with a Parker Jotter, quite possibly more.

You could use it for training dogs in lieu of a "training clicker".
I can hear it without my hearing aids on.  :salute:

It sometimes makes some small clicking sounds when you write with it.
The button feels slightly....  not smooth when pushing it. Slightly rubbery.
This is a really "tactile" pen.  8) So fun to fidget with.

Its.... big....
My Cap-o-matic is a little wider than a Bic Cristal, and much heavier at 17 grams. This "Zero-Gravity" pen dwarfs that Cap-o-matic! It weighs 28 grams and makes my Cap-o-matic look like a bic!

Think Laurel & Hardy, The Rock & Kevin Hart.

I don't doubt that you could use this pen easily when wearing gloves in winter.  :tu:
The size and weight works against it a little when it comes to portability.
the experience of using this pen... quite good.  :tu:
It can be stealthy or attention drawing, depending on the colour variation and how you use it.  ;)

But unfortunately I have small-ish hands.  :-\ And think that I prefer the thinner, lighter and slipperier Cap-o-matic for prolonged writing. Just a personal preference, the way pens tend to be different for everyone!

If I could only have one pen, it would probably be a Bullet, for lots of portability and durability, in my opinion. Two pens, I'd pick Bullet and Cap-o-matic for personal preference.
The Zero-Gravity might make a great office pen, and you could annoy other people by clicking it.
The cap-o-matic is in a weird spot. Less portable then the Bullet, more portable than the Zero-Gravity. Less "substantial" (and cheaper) than either the Bullet or Zero-Gravity.
I hear that the M4B cap-o-matic is sold at military base shops to soldiers for $5.  :o

Nice pen and nice RAK, Nix  :hatsoff:

The zero gravity has a nice look to it :tu:

 :salute: Yup, I’m still stunned!

By the way, I emailed the space pen company... I asked them if they’ve done any tests regarding the number of times that their pens can be clicked before wearing out/breaking.... I’m weird about stuff like that. I want to know that fidgeting with my Cap-o-matic won’t cause it to break within a year. :ahhh :D

How do you like it?

I like it a lot, actually. More than I thought I would.

I originally made the mods in May, I think, and have been carrying the pen everyday at work since then. When not at work, I much prefer the bullet pen as it basically disappears until needed.

I found I prefer the fisher ink over my previous standard pilot G-2. I actually find the fisher ink to be smoother. Plus it dries faster and is more tamper resistant.

I also like the price. I have slightly under $13 in each of the two pens I made. I think the new zebra f-701s are now all metal to begin with, and should be even cheaper since you don't need to sacrifice two other pens for the metal nock. So, the cost makes me not afraid to use it. I also like that it isn't as tapered towards the tip like the fisher pens or the parker jotter types.

It's not perfect, though. The inside body is a plastic tube, and I had the knurled grip section start to separate from the metal upper. This required me to disassemble the metal sleeves from the plastic tube and slather the inside with 2-part epoxy. Now it feels solid as a rock.

If I could find a clicky or bolt pen that was all metal, at a price this low, I'd consider replacing the zebra, but so far I haven't found one.

Rite In The Rain (RITR) has pens (https://www.riteintherain.com/all-weather-pens) that are also pressurized so that they can write upside down, in the rain on their 'waterproof' paper, or to just be used as an everyday pen. Then I found the IMPROMPTU TACTICAL PEN (https://www.gerbergear.com/Equipment/Pens/Tactical-Pen_31-001880) and it is a tactical pen, with glass breaker that the RITR pen refills will fit into and if you are able it can even be a very effective weapon. This Gerber pen has a pretty hefty price tag on it, but I was thinking "Hey, wow, wouldn't that be neat" and my wife was quick to remind me (I felt scolded) that we already have a glass breaker in our vehicle tool kit and shatter my thoughts of such as glorious pen as easily as the pen would shatter glass.

**We have a lot of morons in Arizona and I'm sure it isn't an isolated problem and you may have the same type of morons in your area. These morons will leave their children in a car, with the windows rolled up, in the 120 degree heat of July and August while they....1) Run into a store 'real quick'. 2) sit in a bar drinking. 3) runs inside a friends house to drop something off (or pick up) 'really quickly'. I is legal (In Arizona, USA. AFAIK, the Rite in the Rain pens use licensed Fisher SP refills.
In Germany, Diplomat makes and sells licensed Space pens - They have teh same models as Fisher and some own models if I remember correctly.. The series is called SpaceTec.
I am not sure if it is a thing of different age of teh pens, but the Fiher and Diplomat Space pen Bullet threads are different on the 2 pens I have.

It seems odd to extol the virtues of a ball point pen, even if it is a fancy one, but I really do like this one.  The design is so well thought out and executed, it reminds me very much of a SAK.  Particularly the alox ones.

It is small and unobtrusive, so it is easy to carry and always have on you, yet it is large enough (really, full size with the cap posted) to be used as a primary writing instrument, if so desired. It is also inexpensive enough, even if not cheap, that I don’t mind carrying it all the time. That it is made with quality materials helps, too.

I like a lot of the little well thought out design cues: the notch in the o-ring to equalize pressure so the cap doesn’t get stuck on, the slightly fatter butt-end so the cap posts without sliding all the way down, the plastic piece in the tip of the cap to keep the pen’s point from rattling around when closed.  All good stuff.

One thing I’ve noticed the past year is that the metal nock has a slightly rough/gritty feeling to it. Last night I worked a little nyogel into it and so far it feels as smooth as glass. We’ll see how long it lasts.

I bought a Fisher Telescoping Space Pen. It was mentioned in the very first post of this thread, but hardly brought up after that. I liked that the telescoping pen was one piece, with no cap to lose, and one-hand deployable. It also wasn't very expensive.
As part of my everyday carry belt holster obsession: I designed a quick draw holster for the pen. It took three prototypes to get the locking mechanism working perfectly. But now it is ready for the public.
I use the actual telescoping feature to lock the pen into the holster. With one hand you can unlock it, pull out the pen, and it is ready to use. It docks just as easy.

I think simply being on this forum along makes one a gear nerd. I am now up to three things on my belt. (Pen, Flashlight, Multitool). I figure by the time I retire I will look like Batman. (I am thinking about one for my keys now).
Strangely though I am not one of those folks with a huge phone holster on my side.

I'd welcome a bit of advice please.

A couple of years ago I got myself a Titanium Bullet with Space Shuttle. The Shuttle was attached by two pins into the cap with their feet pressed/punched flat inside the cap to secure it. It was a bit loose but ok. Eventually it fell off in my pocket with wear.

I have tried to epoxy the shuttle  back on the cap but the smooth titanium finish doesn't give a key and I actually like that finish so I don't want to muck about roughening it. I'd put some epoxy on the reverse but pushing the pen body home lifts the Shuttle and suggest to me there's not much clearance to play with. I have come to the conclusion I should just leave it be and live with it.

Any suggestions or cunning wheezes I might try?
Thanks

If the shuttle is lifting, then my guess is the pins are too long, and that's what the body of the pen is pressing against. No wonder the epoxy didn't hold.

I'd file the pins shorter, key both surfaces, ensuring you don't key the cap outside the outline of the shuttle piece, and re-epoxy it.

Pabs is right. I've had more than one escape from me pocket. However, I love 'em and just try to be sure I'm carrying one in a manner that decreases the chance of 'pocket jump'.   :D

I haven't lost a pen via pocket-jump yet. I'd say it's because I'm paranoiac and as such keep it in a nice zipped compartment. :ahhh

I ended up buying a pocket clip for my Bullet Space Pen but it slides off frequently. Any tips or tricks to keep it on?

I used a couple of small dots of gorilla glue on mine that I have a clip on.  Not ideal I admit but it worked.

I tried gluing the clip with some adhesive and it kept sliding off so I just took some electrical tape and taped it on with better results.

I ended up sending my pen back to Fisher for warranty work. Not only did they fix the clip, they also send a personalized letter saying the pen was checked over for warranty work but also sent me a complimentary refill!  :tu:

I still use the 3 Fisher Space Pens pictured in my original 2016 post.  The pens remain in very good shape and are used daily.  I have replaced the original medium ink cartridges with Fisher's fine (PR4F) cartridges.  While I value being able to write at any angle and in cold temperatures, I must echo what a few others have said.  The writing quality is only mediocre, especially when the ink begins to come out in globs.  The writing quality is on par with the ball point pens give out for free at county fairs, banks, and trade shows.

Spot on!

I am back to Fisher Bullets again.  I switched to cheaper Parkers for a few years, but they were less comfortable to carry and I ended up losing them more often (so close to a wash in terms of cost).

Still not a fan of the Fisher inserts.  Truthfully I also never replaced nor contacted them.  I use whats been reliable for me, Zebra refills.  Not bashing Fisher just my experience see my post on page 6.  A failure is not a big deal but my was not good.  Not one but 2 failures at that.  I wanted to document my experience and while I guess I could have called Fisher I chose not to.  I solved it by using what had worked for me.  I'm still happy with my choice.  That said I was also not a huge fan of the writing experience.  I'm a lefty so the ink when it did work was eh, my fountain pens are less of a problem for me.

As with everything, this is my experience YMMV.

What I carry everyday is a cheap staples mini pen.  It rides in my front pocket in the leather slip.  Never an issue.  Random insert.  Its plastic and as you can see its beat up but it has not failed.

The red pen is very similar to the bullet. It brass, it came with a random insert that I used up.  I believe I've had this since 2013/2014.  Its original insert has been replaced with a Zebra, never an issue.  I like the build in clip too.  Never an issue.

My bullet is good but I rather carry my red one since it has a built in clip.  I use Zebra insert in my bullet and never an issue.  I don't carry this pen that often.  While the insert is reliable I choose the red pen over this one.  Maybe I am harboring some resentment  :)

I should have also pictured my Manager.  I carried it for 10 years? The pen never had an issue.  Same goes for my Explorer plus I also carried a long time.  That pen also never had a failure.

The gear I use must be ready when called upon.  A failure I can accept to a degree but 2 failures means that gear is a goner.  Yes its a pen but still its not worth the money spent if I worry about leaks.  I have made the adjustment so I can use the bullet case so its a win in my book.

The random black pen with silver clip is used least.  I keep it around cause it is reliable tho I wont be able to use a Zebra insert when the ink runs out.

Fisher certainly doesnt need my seal of approval.  They have a loyal following.  If Fisher wants to send me an insert I'd be happy to give it a go but if its gloppy ink then no thanks.  My Zebra is smooth writing.

Mrs. TJ and I just got back from vacation in Disney World. I signed the check in a French restaurant in Epcot one day with my Fisher Bullet pen and the waitress was very interested in it. I ended up talking to her about it for a few minutes and gave her their website to check it out.

Anyone ever broken the pocket clip on an AG-7?

Looks to be a weaker design to the much lighter Parker Jotter

Ouch.

I don’t have an AG-7, but as a Parker Jotter will take a Fisher refill, perhaps you can eat your cake and have it too…

Yeah, I already do that at work. I also carry a beater Chinese promotional pen that I put the Parker insert into. If anyone asks to borrow a pen, they get the beater. Funnily enough, I've been carrying that one for close to 10 years and the clicky bit is only starting to fail. The AG-7 is my non work EDC pen and was a gift from my wife. Probably a combination of wear and tear from my jeans pocket carrying location and 2 Year Old son playing with it. The Parker Jotter has much more metal at the stress point than the Fisher. Disappointing based on the difference in price between the two.

So, got a brand new pen in the mail today.
It's not the one I sent away thinking it would be repaired  :dunno:
I didn't get any questions about sentimental value or anything. Oh well, they are $175RRP here in Aus, so for just under $30 I have a brand new one.

Hopefully neither you nor your wife are too upset over the loss of the old one.

I would have been happy to receive the same pen back with a new clip. The response was thus:

"The pen is not repairable. The clip is part of the internal assembly of the pen and it is not possible to disassemble the pen to replace the clip.
Nor is it economically viable to even attempt to do this as the cost far exceeds the price of a new pen."

Now if I was in the USA it may be economically viable and I disagree about the the clip being part of the internal assembly.
The economically viable part is probably more due to needing to send it back to the factory where they have the right tools.

Anyway, my wife's ok that it isn't the same one. It got plenty of use and pocket time, so a shiny new one is quite nice to have.

"Dear sir: sorry to hear about your flat tire. The tire is part of the internal assembly of the car and it is not possible to disassemble the car to replace the tire. Nor is it economically viable to even attempt to do this as the cost far exceeds the price of a new car. Enjoy your new vehicle."
