Just got this today from amazon sale, figured it would be interesting to post pics as it changes colors over time. Comes with case and light is vacuum sealed:

Holy crap Jaya man. That's nuts after a couple weeks of use. Does that partially mean that it's a cheaper quality or percentage copper that it looks sooo dark?
Really great pic man, kudos. Really cool! :tu: :tu:

Thanks Kaput... Don't have any knowledge on metallurgy, so I wouldn't be able to answer. Maybe humidity is a factor? One thing is for sure. It's also an Olight i3E EOS Copper light...

By a crazy coincidence I just ordered an i3s and an i3e cos they both look fantastic.
I wonder why the i3s isn't quite as brassy as the other one - the naturally patina looks wonderful.
Really looking forward to these.
-
Is that a natural patina? Curious as it looks so much different than other copper olight i3 Ive seen pics of. Although I suppose that why patina is inherrintley unique :tu:

theres 2 brass versions, 1 with a raw finish and one with a shinier laquer type coating, the last pic I posted has the shiny version(the longer light)
The copper only comes in the raw finish, but as it oxidizes it loses that new penny look.

I'll definitely post. I'll use it daily, (and won't really handle it otherwise). So we'll see. It'll be hard. Itll be hard to not swap out and carry my Ti s1 from time to time. But I am really pleasantly pleased with this purchase!
Cheers Jaya

I have had mine for at least 4-5 months and it still looks very new compared to everyone else. I literally have carried it and used it daily for the entire 5 months.
EDIT: Whats weird is it patinad a bit in the beginning and now it looks more polished.

LOL, yeah that one only comes in brass, but I guess since copper is in brass, it will change the raw model, but the one I posted has a coating so I dont think that one(brass i3s) will change like spauldings. One thing I do notice is the threads are very stiff on copper model even with lube especially when you cross over the o ring to turn on/off
-
Well damn, I thought the i3s-CU was copper. :twak:
-

I got one of the aluminium i3s's and apart from obviously being lighter, it is far smoother to operate one-handed. Added to the fact that it comes on at medium brightness (which I prefer) and is currently 1/3 of the price of the CU version, I have to conclude that the AL version is the one I should have purchased in the first place! I love the look of the copper i3e and i3s but I wouldn't buy them again, whereas I will buy a bunch of AL i3s's for birthday presents and stocking fillers. (Thinking ahead here..!)
-
So I am getting allot of good use out of this light. It is extremely bright and feels great quality! I even appr coats the fact that it only has one brightness, less cycling through modes and such. Really really nice. :tu: :tu:

Hey now. After a short couple weeks this thing patinas very very fast it seems. It seems like daily you'd notice slight variations. I wonder if it also has to do with the material of my caddy I carry it in?
Anyway, heres a pretty bad lighting pic of my parinad light so far.
-
I may die before this thing changes color
-
I saw a trick mentioned on another forum. Chop some boiled eggs into tiny chunks, stick them in a plastic bag, and shove your copper flashlight in there... when you pull it out 8 hours later it will have a groovy dappled patina. (I haven't tried it, but the result looked pretty cool. For those who are looking for an Insta-Patina.)
-
A friend did just exactly that...he showed it to me and it looks amazing

I know the feeling....
Unless the copper-egg reaction results in something toxic - (Agent Orange, mustard gas etc...) - there's nothing stopping you from eating the egg-mush afterwards...
I'd love to know what's going on here chemically to make the patina. (Since I am a complete moron regarding chemistry, I can't figure it out for myself.)

I could not help myself. Had to order the Olight I3E EOS. I love the brass model, but need a copper one in my life. :D
-
I love forced patinas on blades, but for some reason i'm not much of a fan of the forced patina on copper lights. Love the natural patina on copper lights though.
-
Agree. I don't really care for the look of those. The middle pictures ok, but the rest just stink, get it, because they were dipped in hard boiled eggs :D
Thanks for posting that tho thunderpants
-
look at the crud that worked its way inside the on off switch in that third pic, I think this is more detrimental to the workings of the light and the patina is kinda ugly imo.
-
Yeah, I've also dismissed the idea of egging my olights. I'd much rather let them age gracefully.

Got my copper I3E EOS today!

I really really enjoy this light and must have used it a half dozen times today alone. BUT, I can't stand the way the head turns to turn it on. Counter clockwise just seems wrong to me... my other olights a clicks so I don't have any issue or preconceived notions. But it seems backwards, and I do it backwards every time I got to turn it on I instinctualy.

It's how all the twist lights I own turn. Try holding the head of the light with your left hand and twisting the body clockwise. It's how I like to do it.

I was a long time Maglite user (Solitaire LED, Mini Mag AA and Mini Mag AAA) and had to get used to my newer lights... Mags turns clockwise while other twisties I own turn counter-clockwise

First impressions of the I3E are good but I do notice the threads for the twisty feel gritty and stick. I cleaned and lubed the threads and o-ring, but it's still the same. It doesn't feel like it's dirty. It feels like the threads were not ground well. Hopefully it will smooth out with some use.

I use the light one handed. It's so small it just makes sense. I pull it out of my pocket with a lanyard and twist it on one handed.

Maybe that's it. With maglite being the household flashlight for years that probably ingrained that into my twisting familiarity.
-

mine are tight also, as I said above, its aslo tight going over the o-ring, when light warms up threads loosen up a little, I was considering cleaning lube off and trying teflon tape, as it works well with copper and brass plumbing threads, but not sure it will be good on a light that gets twisted often
I'm starting to use the light on my keychain cause it has a off center emitter, and dont care if it gets banged up, so maybe that will speed up patina process. Out of the three I3e's I got this winter, the copper & black were off center emitters, the silver one is perfectly centered
-
More patina added to my flashlight. Looking sharp!
-
I got my camera to work, but I cannot see what I am shooting so its a guessing game. Best I could do.
I love the patina this one is taking.

:-\ 5 weeks and nada, maybe a slight haze to the copper, but no color change yet. could be the lower winter humidity, but damn I thought it would be a faster process
-
Maybe different people are more/less acidic than others. My copper olights are also pretty fresh looking, even though I use them every day. It's cold here so I'm not sweating profusely. (In fact I'm barely alive...)
-
3 month update: well it seems to be taking on a hazy pinkish hue, but i'm not seeing those drastic dark changes like some of the other pics:

And this is the pic from when I first got it:

I'm surprised too by the lights that haven't patina'd. Mine was super quick, it gets used daily. I think it's looking good :tu:
-
damn that does look nice kaput. looks like an A/C or plumbing pipe after I braze or solder, I'm not happy with the progress on mine + the emitter is off center. I've alternated this light on my keychain and neck lanyard and its just taking too long, don't think it will ever get that nice color yours has
-
after reading some of the comments I googled oxidation..whats happening in the copper is similar to iron when it rusts. the element loses electrons to oxygen and steals oxygen electrons. very hard to visualize this in your mind as its happening on such a small scale. then you have to picture a copper atom, and millions more of them share electrons and forming solid matter...I think I need a few more IQ points to see this stuff in my minds eye
-

It really came out of nowhere. At first it had no changes, then whammy, it got dark in days... I do like it. Although I really also like the raw in patina fresh copper look as well. I think it's sharp :tu:

It's a video about Adam visiting his blogger friend and goes through stuff on the blogger's desk. One of which are a set of cylinders to illustrate density (100 grams) including led, aluminum, brass and copper. They then have a short chat on patina. Oil and humidity could be a factor...

the olight still stinks, using a Qtip dipped in vinegar on the body, 2-3 times a week maybe it will look cool after awhile:
here's the buck, its brass, patina naturally in its leather holster, wondering if the leather is a factor:

Leather is definitley a factor. If it's been oiled or treated in anyway it will have contribute to a patina for sure.

Leather is most definitely a factor. Leather holds moisture and will cause a patina.

With lights like Tip and Tini I don't get much chance to put it on my keychain anymore, it's also a lot heavier, but's its cool to have at least 1 copper light in my collection.

Needs some pocket time and I am sure it will start to patina  Not had mine a year and it has turned a very nice color :tu:

Yup, sweat and pocket time will do it. I remember when I got mine it was summer and it got handled a lot as well as sat in my pocket which was hot and moist and it patina in less than a week.

Thx DP, seems like it keeps changing back and fourth, I cant seem to get that nice rainbow effect like Jaya, I researched a bunch of chemically forced methods, but they all seem to eat the surface too much.

OK, I need one now...

It's a good little light... need? that will happen more and more here!

I tried the egg trick, but it seemed to strip some patina off. Next I put it in ziplock with birthday cake, mostly frosting and got some cool camo effects on the body. Now I am applying some mustard lines with a toothpick and seeing what happens, trying to build some different layers, the cake/frosting patina seemed to wear off a little after using the light, but that may be the way to go after I see what the mustard does.
here it is after the egg, notice the pink section on the head where it got stripped

I just got a copper Maratac. One of the things I like about copper and brass is that the patina makes it uniquely yours.

the mustard was definitely the harshest / most reactive. I had the light clipped to inside top of ziplock with some mustard smeared on it an a cap full of mustard on the bottom, but it fell down overnight into the mustard lol, green scales had formed, I wiped it off and more was stripped, but getting a very cool camo pattern, will follow up with pics after it sits for a few days out in the open.
