Post by: Etherealicer on April 20, 2016, 10:58:48 PM
So, I did spring maintenance on my bike today... now it runs smoother than silk again 8)
And since I'm such a shining personality I thought I could use my good influence to inspire others (hence the price :P).

REQUIREMENTS

2) You need 5 posts by the time of the drawing, so you can send me a PM
3) Post before/after pictures when you clean, oil or whatever your bike to make it ready to ride (if you have just done it just post after pictures). Pictures of the tools used are also very welcome.
4) Tell us What you have done
5) Add your name to THE LIST (Numbers from 002 - 999)
6) Keep THE LIST TIDY :viking:

Washing... no... but if you change tires 10 times (and I need proof, like different color tires every time, not just 2 switching back and forth...) I give you 10 entries

Considering the number of skate parks and bmx tracks it's been to since then I would say it's still pretty good.

Nice interesting exercise; well done!

Prepping for winter down here is a little different; bikes are used all year round so there is constant maintenance.
Winter specific changes; if I am going to ride before work I need a light and new cycling clothes (warm longs)
At least its dry during winter and the cold can be overcome with some peddling if the clothing keeps out the wind generated.

This is not really not maintenance work so will not add this to the draw. Will do another post for that sometime soon. Thought will share this since I had already taken pics.

This was done some time back (another reason not to add to the draw) to get our bike ready for the MS150 ride. Texas is not pancake flat like most think. A lot of rolling hills around here. Switched to a lighter wheelset to help us climb. Had to re-space the rear from 130mm to 145mm for the lighter wheel.

Before Pics, Tools used, and setting up the guy lines.
Title: Re: [GAW] Get your bike ready for summer!
Post by: rishardh on April 22, 2016, 08:52:17 AM

Measuring all around to make sure the alignment stays straight as the stretch is done. Then stopped when reached 145mm between the wheel dropouts. The last time around I had to squeeze them to go from 135mm to 130mm.

The after pic with the lighter wheels :)

I also ride all year round, but in Spring I make the big maintenance (clean off dirt, salt and stuff) :D

I only used a hose and sponge so no pics of the tools, sorry.

I do still need to clean out all the nooks and crannies, and adjust the brakes and oil the gears so will post another pic once I get that done.

I take my bike to the car wash for cleaning, hose it down with high pressure... I never do manual work when it can be avoided :P

You guys take much better care of your bikes. Mine's at least 24 years by now (got it from my father) and it was time for some love. The chain was way worn out so that had to be changed and the textile saddle that my father added was worn out too. I have a hard time arguing myself into changing stuff since the second-hand market is filled with great bikes that would have costed me less than changing the chain and the new saddle.

A guy I ride with asked me why I don't ride my nicer bike. I told him my old bike rides better but he didn't buy it. Just to please him and also because I lost the Dolly Pardon hills sprint I have to show up with a bike I had not ridden for 6 months.

Re-charged the Di2 Battery.

Patched a slow leak. Had to dunk the tube in water to see where it was. Once I knew where it was I was able to locate the tiny shard (ceramic I think) biting into the tire.

Now I am ready for tomorrow's ride :)

OK, so I just bought this in it's current condition so the faults aren't my doing.  The only blame I'll take is that I bought it at all. :D

Did
- general cleaning
- cleaned and lubed chain
- replaced perished front tire

Still to do
- errr....lots, but most notably it needs a saddle bracket that works.

We ride as a group sharing the load and then when we get to certain sections of the route like the Dolly Pardon hills it's an unannounced sprint zone and you just take off or try to catch the front guy's wheel and hang on. It's funny come to think of it unless you are a new guy and wonder what just happened.

Hey, that is quite an effective weapon. Used it during sword sparring (without the dart), pretty much blinds the opponent at short range, long enough to impale him...

Despite this being over I'm still actually working on my bike, even without the incentive of winning something. :D

I hasten to add that I've not worked on a bike in years so if someone spots me doing something wrong please let me know, I'll not be offended in the least.

That said I'm pretty sure that the chain shouldn't be rubbing on itself when going between the two smallest cogs, so I've taken out a couple of links to get it looking like this.  Still runs up and down all the gears.

I've also adjusted the rear breaks so as they actually line up with the rim and have looked at installing the guard for the cassette/mech.

As long as the chain is long enough so it doesn't lock up when you're on the big ring at the front and the big cog at the back, you're good. :tu:

I've also adjusted the rear breaks so as they actually line up with the rim and have looked at installing the guard for the cassette/mech.

Make sure the front of the brake pad touches the rim a little before the rear (this is called toe-in and helps stop the brake from squealing) - use a piece of cardboard under the back of the pad to maintain the angle while you tighten the pad fixing  nut.  I think you've got the hardware on the brake the wrong way round - the nut should be behind the brake arm, and the pad should be in front.  It's hard to tell, but I also think the pads are the wrong way round - one end is slightly longer than the other, this should be pointing towards the back of the bike.

That said I'm pretty sure that the chain shouldn't be rubbing on itself when going between the two smallest cogs, so I've taken out a couple of links to get it looking like this.  Still runs up and down all the gears.

As long as the chain is long enough so it doesn't lock up when you're on the big ring at the front and the big cog at the back, you're good. :tu:

Checked that and is all good. :tu:

I just had a fiddle with the alignment of the pads, so I'm not taking any blame for things being back to front.  :D  Thanks for the advice mate, I'll have another look and adjust it to suit. :tu:

For those who wonder... that is not a wooden log but the latest furniture from IKEA... not only do you have to assemble it, no, you also have to carve the pieces first :tu:
