Title: Razor knives
Post by: kreskin13 on March 06, 2008, 11:48:57 AM
I admit it. I have a thing for razor knives. I don't know why, I just like 'em. Could be that I make my living with the damn things.

I mentioned in another thread that I think I have about 50 of these wonderful tools and at least one of you wanted to see some pics. Well I'm here at work now and only have part of my collection here, most of them are at home. I'll take some pics of those later.

I still have my Stanley that I used a lot in my last job.  I have lots of odd blades for it, didn't know you could get serrated ones though.

Yeah, I first saw them at Lowes about 3 months ago but you had to buy a pack of 50 for about $15 and you really couldn't see what the blades in the package looked like.

I found this pack at my local country hardware store for about $4. I would love to give you a review about how they work but I haven't used them yet. ::)

Interesting idea though.

I have a Lowes Cobalt razor knife and I really like it. The blades are very secure but also easy to replace. They've come a long way in the last few years.

How can you claim to be a collector, when you don't even have an Olfa?

(Of any sort, let alone the Model A -  which I'd had since before man knew fire)

I'm with you Cman, in my job we used them all day. I had a modest collection (nothing like yours).
When I left the trades shows a couple of years ago, them angled fatties were the rage, I never cared
for them because they were just to big and bulky.

Orange and yellow regular ones were popular because they were easy to find if you dropped them or set them down.
I also like the ones were you could change the blades fast and easy, most do that now.

What was crazy to me is how many old timers still carried the box cutters that stayed open all the time! or the knife
was so old they couldn't close it anymore and they stored them "open" in their tool boxes! They said that helped
when other people tried to borrow their tools without asking!  :o

I got it from Home Depot. They had them on clearance about 3 years ago. I, of course, have several still new in the package. They use a cartridge system where each blade is indexed by a numbered knob on the back of the knife. The blades come to the point at a very low angle giving good reach in tight places.

Shoot me a PM and I'll send you one.

The type of knife that I use 95% of the time is a fixed blade. We have to put very heavy pressure on the knife when we use them and the fixed blade knives simply hold the blade tighter. The better ones also use a magnet to help hold the blade. My main use knife now is a fixed blade Stanley Fat Max with a quick blade change system. I like the bulk because I can get a good grip on it.

I guess I'm one of those "old timers". In a few months I'll hit 30 years on the job.  :o

I can't make it out...is there a screwdriver in the ass end of that knife? ???

I have a Craftsman (like yours without the black part, mine is all silver painted metal) in my toolbox.  The most solid, hard use razor knife I have.

I have a Husky folding razor knife in my car kit.  The lock is strong, but I don't trust the mechanism that holds the blade in place.  I'd much rather have a folgin knife like that, BUT with a screw holding the blade in place, not just the pressure of a piece of meral.

For work, 99% of cutting is done with what I think is an Ameriline retractable snap off blade knife.  I've used the Hyde design in the past and the lock didn't hold up for more than a day of use...then the blade slides freely...eventually wearing a hole in my back pocket... :P  The Amerilines' lock is still strong a clicky after a few months of hard use.

Now blades are intruiging me...I never knew there were SERRATED blades, or TITANIUM coated blades but then again I never looked :D

EDIT:
I've even been known to "improvise" a handle from plastic tape on the back of a razor blade :-X

Yeah, that Stanley is nice. It is heavy but that makes it very solid.

Remember, these are only the razor knives I have at work. When I got home today I rounded up 51 more! I haven't taken pics of those because I know I have more that I haven't found yet.

With the 20 I found at work (so far) and the 51 I've found at home (so far) it means I lied when I said I have about 50! :o

Next collection I have is tape measures. I found 25 at home in about a minute. I probably have about 50 of those as well. :D

From the looks of it, one of his FATMAX is a fixed blade as he mentioned, and the other is a pivoting retractable.

The Fat Max on top has been my main use knife for about a year now. It is a fixed blade while the one below it is a slider.

Do you have one of those Kobalt three bladed knives out of the package?  How is it?  It looks like it would be pretty bulky.

How do you carry that fixed blade Stanley?  Or is it more of a "static" knife where it lives on a workspace?

Yes more pics are coming. I am still rounding up the ones at home. I've found the 51 so far but I know I have more. I'll take more pics when I find a few more.

That Kobalt package is already opened, I just stuck it back in the package. It is bulky but it comes with a sheath. You can't see it in the pic because it is under the knife. I'll take everything out of the package tomorrow and take another pic.

The Craftsman is my current work EDC knife. It is a slider with a titanium blade in it. I use it when I don't need to use heavy pressure. I like it because it is light, relatively small and has a quick blade change system. I have changed work EDC razor knives often over the years, looking for that perfect combination of size, weight & ease of blade change.

Nope, try as I might, I haven't found it. It can't exist, there are too many applications for razor knives to incorporate all into one knife. That's one reason I have so many.

Throughout the shop I work in I have razor knives placed in all places where they are used a lot. Since I prefer a fixed blade knife that method works better because I don't have to carry one. My EDC knife can then be a lightweight slider which is easier and safer to carry.

The Superknife was the first of that type I had ever seen. I found it in an A.G. Russell catalog and bought it right away. It was a very heavy duty knife with the thickest blade I had ever seen but you needed an allen wrench (which it came with) to change blades. I found it today and it will be in the pics I take of the razor knives I have at home.

Yeah, that folding razor knife was one of the best ideas in a long time.

I see you have one of the mini Kobalts. That's one of my favorites because it holds extra blades in the handle.

I've been pondering Stanley's Folder one end Razor knife other end toolios for a while, but generally pass with reasoning that Stanley is not exactly known for their Knife blades, and for the price they are going, I could get a nice SAK.

The little black one near the top right looks interesting too.

Agree with ducktapehero.

I got the basic Lowes Kobalt folding razor knife about a year ago.  (Lowes also carries various Kobalt razor-blade/folding-blade combo knives with which I have no experience.)

I've used that Kobalt a lot over the past year and have grown to really like it.

The good:
+Great bang for the buck! (Only $8 including extra blades.)
+A cool looking little unit.
+Construction is very tough and durable.
+Excellent pocket clip.
+Easy one-hand opening, once it's broken in.
+Locks up really solid.
+Easy one-hand closing.
+Operates fine with work gloves.
+Quick and easy blade change system.
+Jimping on bottom of blade holder improves control.
+Suprisingly good ergonomics, given the angular handle.

The not so good:
-Possible to disengage blade retention in use, if you put your thumb in just the wrong spot on the top of the blade holder to bear down while cutting.
-Anodizing on the aluminum scales has a few flaws (but for 8 bucks overall fit and finish is pretty decent.)

.

I've carried one of these razor knives for the last 5 years at my job building Best Buys. Every time we have a fng hired on they try to do things with them that sends them to the ER to get stitched up. After that the learning curve kicks in and they use them properly. I closed my brand new Kolbalt on my thumb one night. The only thing that stopped the razor was my thumb bone.

I did pick up an 80th anniversery Craftsman knife the day after thanksgiving for 7 bucks. Got a nice sideclip on it and feels well built. I always buy Irwin blades as they seem to last longer-stay sharper.

I got a job as an asst manager at a Dollar General. I pulled out my trusty SAK to cut down a box and the manager of the store told me I couldn't use that. He said I had to use of the "safety razor knives" to "keep from cutting myself". It was one of those that you had to continuously push the itty bitty razor out to cut with. I told him that I have carried a SAK for over 10 years and I'd be more bound to cut myself with the safety razor because I'm not used to it.

After a couple of weeks I managed to do so. Thankfully it wasn't a bad cut but after that he said I COULD use my SAK but not to do so if the district manager was in. After that I never cut myself again. Of course I've never cut myself with my locking Lowe's Cobalt razor. I did however poke myself with it. Boy that bled but since it was so sharp it didn't really hurt too bad.

The razor knife is my baby. I make my living using it, hours a day, most days of my 30 years at my job. I am certainly not the best at a lot of things, but people come from miles around to watch me wield a razor knife. 8)

Precision cutting is required on my job and my tools are razor knife, tape measure and straight edge. Since very heavy pressure is required to cut material, I wear a cutting glove on the hand not holding the knife. If you slipped using that kind of pressure without wearing a cutting glove, it would be very ugly.

A safety razor knife is one type I don't have. The type of cutting I do requires a stiff, thick blade that doesn't move. That's why I must use a fixed blade knife.

That all means is that I don't need a safety knife. If you know me at all, you know that not needing something has never stopped me from buying it! So a safety knife is on my list simply because I don't have one. I've seen them for sale for many years but since, even though I can see where they could be the right tool for certain jobs, I didn't need one. There were always too many cool razor knives to buy that I could use.

I'll probably buy a pretty red one and even get some extra safety blades for it. The safety blade is a regular blade that just doesn't have a sharp point. I assume this is so you can't poke something with it very easily. These are different from those hideous "rounded edge" blades. Those horrible blades have very little practical use.  ???

I think I know what you guys are talking about...is it a blunt/rounded edge razorblade in a spring loaded handle?  By spring loaded I mean you use your thumb to expose the razor, but if your thumb leaves the slider, the razor is pulled back by a spring.

I found one in a box of busted and broken razor knives at work and it was the most useless thing I've ever seen :-X

Here's what I use every day; An American Line retractable blade.  I've been using those type of blades for about 5 years and never had one snap on me.  They are stronger than they look.  And this AMERICAN LINE knife is made in china

Broken down; spare blades can be housed in that plastic holder, then slid into the knife body.

It'd probably be quite handy on plaster board and stuff :)

It probably is, but I let my checkbook do my drywall work! :D :D

Well I've done it in the past (used to be a painter and decorator) and yeah it is a bit of a crappy number at times :(

That one was posted here some time ago- I'll have to see if I can find the old thread.  I don't think it was looked on too fondly, so I'd love to hear your impressions of it!

I put my SAK away today and carried my Lowe's razor knife. I love my SAK's but I could very easily EDC this too. In fact, I may do this for a while. One thing that's nice is that it's so easy to get a super sharp edge on it. And even when it's dull, it's still pretty sharp.

Hey Kreskin, how is this Kobalt razor knife(top) compared to the blue aluminum one(bottom)? I have the bottom one. I love it but the top one just looks a little nicer.

I'd love to see a line from Leatherman or Gerber, or one of the other top shelf manufacturers with a blade like this incorporated into it.

Well that lasted until about 5 PM. Then I started getting anxious and got my Farmer back in my pocket and all was good.

"I admit it. I have a thing for razor knives. I don't know why, I just like 'em..." Calvin

To me, they have pretty much (functionally, for me) squashed any need felt for all the other relatively expensive and beautiful every day carry knives available. Always replaceable and always sharp; I use the "Gold" blades (by Lenox) in both of the folders below and consider them as valuable as the upcoming Skeletool Cx's blade combining the best of both styles:

Where is that locking tradesman knife made?

I bought a 5 pack of those Lenox gold blades and put them in my Craftsman retractable razor...they don't fit in my Stanley :P

Not sure where it's made; yet it does feel solid and surprisingly nice in the hand with rubber-like side grips (also locks at a 45). Some pooh-pooh the entire Gold series; yet I feel that Lenox puts out a decent product that one can cut or saw with some level of confidence.

DTH, sorry I didn't back to you earlier. The top one is basically a big chunk of steel, VERY heavy duty and heavy (195g). The lanyard slot at the bottom could probably crush a few hundred skulls and not show any signs of wear. :o

It is a very nice tool, has a steel pocket clip on the back, rubber inserts on the handle and comes with a belt sheath. I can't remember what I paid for it but it was only money. :D

Is there a folding razor knife out there that has a really good locking mechanism for the blade itself?  The Husky razor knife I have seems really sketchy in regards to how well the blade will stay in place...

And a little bit of info I didn't know before about the Superknife that I was looking into getting;
7. What is the warranty on Superknife products?
Superknife branded product is warranted against factory defects in workmanship and materials for a period of 1 year from date of purchase. Upon notice in writing, Gerber Legendary Blades will promptly repair or replace the defective product. Warranty does not cover equipment damages resulting from abuse, damage in transit, or other damage beyond the control of Gerber Legendary Blades.

It's close to Halloween so I'll bring back a dead thread.

I've been EDC'ing my Lowes Kobalt Razor knife again for the last few days. I got to noticing I used it all the time with stuff I didn't want to use my good knives for. Mainly cutting cardboard and stuff like that. So I dropped it in my pocket Sunday Morning and I've been carrying it since then. And I must admit that I really like it despite it being cheap and unrefined.

I'm fairly good at sharpening but I can't get my SAK's as sharp as these razor blades. And it's so easy to pop the blade out and replace it when it gets dull. I may stick with this for a while. The only thing that I can't do with this as well so far is cut food, it's a little short for that but I manage.

The Lowes Kobalt is a beast. It's a big heavy duty knife and I have 100% confidence in the locking system AND the system that holds the razor in place. It's big tough and unrefined, like an old school pickup. It is also a little rough around the edges so I may get the stainless steel one because it looks just a bit smoother.

I have a Vic Classic and a little key shaped thing that holds a flathead and Phillips head screw on my keychain. I have a P-51 in my wallet. Between these I have enough tools to get through most days. I have extra razors in my junk drawer at home and a pack in my car so I always have a fresh blade should I need it.

Great topic. I really don't have that many razor knives but I do have a Superknife and a Superknife 2 (w/gold lenox blades).  I EDC the Superknife everyday.  I originally had the "patent pending" version that held the blade in place with a screw but then I switched to the push button latch version.  The SK2 is also a bit bigger and has the thumb wheel lock which I'm not a big fan of so I don't use it very much.

I'm still carrying the razor knife. With the stuff on my keychain I can handle 99% of what I come across. I'm gonna go buy a smaller keychain model for "formal" occasions. We're moving so it's getting a LOT of use lately.

I got a new razor knife yesterday. It's the same as Kreskin has above, the real nice stainless steel one for Lowes. Mine came in a value pack, you got the razor knife and a lockback folder for 8 or 9 bucks. The regular razor knife is usually 12 or 13 bucks. I LOVE this thing, it's even heavier than the blue Lowes one I have. The folder that came with it is was worth the money I paid for it, free.  :D The thing I really like about this one is that it will lock hold of the razor on the second hole meaning I have more cutting surface. I will take pics later to show what I mean.

I also got a little keychain razor knife too, from Lowes of course. It takes these little bitty blades and is of limited usefullness. But it's perfect when you're wearing a suit and a tie but still want a razor knife. I've been EDC'ing a razor knife for over a month now and I'm really loving these little things. No more sharpening and I don't have to worry about damaging the blade cutting something I shouldn't. Plus they're a LOT sharper than I could ever sharpen a knife.

I need to replace my Husky brand knife...the tiny bolts that held the clip on don't screw in anymore..the holes are stripped :P

The original clip was wiggly after a while of use..so I retrofitted the clip from a Gerber Paraframe on it and it worked for a long time before it loosened up again.

I know what you mean, these are the definition of "beater blades"...I've seen one that held another few blades in the handle also.  I'm not sure it is worth the extra size/weight, but it was interesting.

I got one like that, its okay. The storage compartment is on the wrong side so blocking the thumb disk for right handers, no one hand opening on that. I think I paid $8 for it, decent quality for the price.

Although if I were to choose again I'd go with the regular version and keep spare blades elsewhere.

My keychain model has this and for this size I like it. It actually makes it a little easier to hold and those little blades aren't the best so having a few extra is great, OTOH I don't like the larger knives with them. They're simply too bulky. I keep a pack of 10 replacement blades in the glove box of the car so wherever I'm at I have extra.

I been using a blue husky for a while, as well as a generic one here and there.. I do like the Husky.   I actually have touched up the blade on a sharpmaker (white stones)  works awesome, and quicker than changing it, believe it or not.

The superknives are my favorite type of razor knifes, I used them daily at my job for the last four years without fail.  The SK2 version is the best.  It uses a roundel instead of a thumb stud to deploy the blade and it also acts as the locking mechanism for the blade.  The roundel rotates to release the locking tab and the blade just pops out for quick change.
