Some people think of grilled cheese as just melting cheese on toasted bread, but it is grilling a cheese sandwich in a pan or on a griddle or flattop. The butter bread just gets so deliciously crispy in contrast with the gooey melted cheese.

It can be any type of cheese that you like as long as it is one that melts well. You can even use more than one type if desired on the same sandwich. Slices work well because they help make sure that every bite is cheese filled. Even American cheese works well and is even preferred by some because of how well it melts. Whatever cheese you choose, do not skimp on the amount of cheese.
Nix - I’ve always used better, but I don’t see why oil wouldn’t work.

In the US, what you are describing would be called "broiling".
And the US is in a bit of a pickle with it's multiple meanings of the word "grill", true. But, as Butch pointed out, we like pickles!
So, yes, a hot, solid, flat piece of metal is called a "grill", especially if found in a restaurant, e.g. a diner. But a metal rack or grate sitting over some sort of heat source, typically burning wood, charcoal, or propane, is also called a "grill".
(Now, no one bring up the confusing topic of the "BBQ". Please.)
And, Sync, 'American Cheese' is real cheese. :rant: It is rather more processed than some other cheeses, e.g. Cheddar, but it is a great cheese to use for melting in a sarny, sammie, grinder, or Philly Cheese steak. Let's be honest here, all cheese is processed to a degree. I made some Indian Paneer last week, just about as simple as a cheese can get, but it's still processed. American cheese is just processed better. :D
Of course, when it comes to the stuff sold as "American Cheese Food"......you may have a leg to stand on there....... :surrender:

I've been making my own prepared mustard using brown and yellow mustard seeds. Lots of garlic and cider vinegar. I'll never go back to the commercial stuff, now. :D

I learned about this sammie a couple years ago. Apparently a....'toasted cheese' sandwich made with tomatoes and onions, sometimes a little chutney too. This sandwich is actually grilled on the grill or in a little basket that can go on the grill. Seems as though this should be call a Grilled Cheese, but the South Africans side step the whole issue by calling it something no one can pronounce.....

I learned about this sammie a couple years ago. Apparently a....'toasted cheese' sandwich made with tomatoes and onions, sometimes a little chutney too. This sandwich is actually grilled on the grill or in a little basket that can go on the grill. Seems as though this should be call a Grilled Cheese, but the South Africans side step the whole issue by calling it something no one can pronounce.....

I am just not all that crazy for Cheese.
I love certain cheeses of course but overall I am never really tempted to adorn other perfectly self serving foods with cheese for any reason,NEVER!!!
There I said it and it does feel good to get it out for the world to see! :woohoo:
I also might point out that Cheese also does not really like me but that might be another topic entirely. :dunno:
I like to avoid cheese as a topping.
