Title: My New Husqvarna Forest Axe
Post by: TazzieRob on September 05, 2017, 04:01:46 AM
I bought this last week after I saw them in my local Husky dealer when I went to get a new battery for my ride on lawn mower / lawn tractor. At $77 on the shelf, I didn't think that was too bad. I looked at the Hatchet offering, and it was very rough in comparison, with a very wonky poll. This one isn't quite square, but not too bad

The wood in the eye looks to have been split out a little from the hydraulic press fitting of the circular metal wedge, and looks like it might even have a varnish on the end grain

Grain orientation is a little better than 45. Unfortunately, this was the only offering so didn't get to choose the best, or rather, this WAS the best offering

The grind is quick and dirty, but has a usable, sharp edge

The leather sheath is poor fitting and have seen cases where the rivets have damaged the edges in transport due to no welt between the layers. Mine might have a slight roll but can't really be seen in this pic

Will give the edge some work, maybe think about a new sheath, and oil the handle.
I'll have to take a group shot of all my axes for comparison.

I have the forest axe, hatchet and carpenters axe :tu: Of those my favorite is the carpenter axe  They are all great though but I agree the sheath on the forest axe isn't my favorite thing and the same one comes on the hatchet  Fortunately the sheath on the carpenters axe is better quality (or at least was when I bought mine :tu: )  Still for the money they are very good axes in my  opinion :like:

Thanks for the pics :tu:

The hatchet at the shop seemed to have an even looser sheath than this one. I'm thinking maybe a bit of leather bootlace wedged down inside would at least prevent any edge damage from the rivets, or I could drill the rivets out, add a welt and stitch and rivet back together. The button snap just needed to be a fraction tighter then it wouldn't be so loose.

Gave the edge a touch up with a sharpening stone and took it down the back yard

Bit into this wood ok, it is in varius states of decay, so probably softer than it would have been as it is a Eucalyptus which are rather hard

The handle is straight, but has those curves from the sideways profile are subtly showing as the pic isn't taken fully in line with the head and handle

off topic but does Husqvarna have some very odd ad campaign over there about being a real man? here apparently they think it is a great idea to insinuate that programmers aren't men (and they wonder how their site is having so many issues)

Easy to make all kinds of leaps with that ad campaign. At least it is funny to see how they can't figure out why some things are happening. A bit like when cats and dogs can't figure out there is a glass door in their way

I think the X7 is currently the best hatchet I own, the other two are Chinese, so...
The Husky hatchet here is $10-15 or so cheaper than the Fiskars but you also get a consistent product with less work from the X7

I still need to thin down my forest axe handle some more, I think. Will slowly work at polishing up the grind and getting the deeper scratches but I'm not very good at sticking to such a boring task for long periods at a time. Little bites, like getting through an elephant

Thanks, but the piece of equipment I’m wondering about is a snowblower, I don’t know anything on them, I was just wondering how Husqvarna is on anything..

Well from what others have said I take it that Husqvarna anything is as good as, almost as good as, or slightly better than Stihl. Which makes it pretty good.

Locally Stihl is seen as a better chainsaw brand while Husqvarna is the better lawnmower brand. No idea about snowblowers. Actually didn't even know what that phrase was 'till a few years back

What snow blowers? Well there not used everywhere, on top of that their trying to change the name of them because they say it’s not right, so their trying to change it to snow throwers.

It says Hipster         Programmer         Man

          Real saw makes the difference

Far too late in saying it Rob, but that's a nice looking axe. :tu:  I had their hatchet for a short while years ago.  Nothing particularly wrong with the one I had, but it was just too heavy for my taste.

Got busy with the flap disc on the grinder cause the scraping was taking too long. I'm much happier with the thickness of the handle now
