Title: Flex in LM Rebar question
Post by: MMR on October 06, 2018, 01:13:35 PM
Maybe a silly question, but yesterday was the first time in the about a months time I have had my rebar, that I encountered a really stubborn Hex-screw, and using the bit driver i modded into my rebar, I was trying to tighten it more, and in the process, I noticed my rebar was twisting and bending, I of course didn't keep going as I didn't want to destroy my Rebar, but honestly is it normal for the Rebar to bend and twist like this?

Anyone else encountered this?

Sorry I don't have any pictures

I just never experienced this with my Charge TTi, my OHT or even my Kick.

I tried to make a video of what I'm talking about:

I wouldn’t use any MT like that
As it puts to much stress on the pivot

I only use it with both handles together  :tu:

I have done this with my Charge TTi, and my Kick for years....of course its not recommended (must of the things I do are not), but I have just never seen this much flex in a LM before

EDIT:

the flex in the handles flexing, not around the pivots

The Rebars I had were quite bendy, but then again most multitools I've had including the Wave have shown a fair bit of flex. There's a time and a place for multitools and dedicated tools... (puts on tin hat)...

I broked my Wave cause i used it sameway. Tools havent desing to use that way it adds too much torque on handles. But its normal if used that way, flex prevents tool shattering into pieces or snapping handles.

I almost wish I had just bought a Super Tool at this point

I feel like I have reached the limit of the Rebar a few times already, both with the pliers but also with the screwdrivers...all of which my Charge, Kick and even OHT never struggled with

I gotta be honest; I thought the Rebar was tougher than this.....especially when everyone praise it as high as they do in their reviews on e.g. YouTube

my signal does  that (not as much though) when using the screwdriver

i always though it was to compensate for any shock the hammer might produce when bashing stuff as my old wave was solid

Yeah I have had a little bit of flex on my other LMs but nothing close to this of my Rebar

Maybe I don’t want a Rebar

I just did a side by side with my Blast and the Blast has more flex than my Rebar. Supertool 300 flexes as well but not as much. My OG Supertool has the least amount of flex out of those tried followed by the Wave.

Having tried (owned) one twice, I agree with this too

Lads, I owne you all an apology.

It turns out the pivots were loose on my Rebar for some reason

Anyway; I tightened them up on both sides with the wrenches I got from Loki and the flex seems a lot more normal now.

Apologies for the smurfty video, but wouldn’t you agree this looks a lot more normal now?

I was wondering about the mod you did on the handles and if that might have made them flex more

I am not sure  :dunno:
Don’t know if I have a use for a Rebar
Probably would go for the Supertool instead  :tu:

Well, in my eyes a Rebar is a pocketable version of the ST300. The latter is much sturdier and more forgiving of abuse, of course, but I consider it too big to pocket, so it would require a sheath/pouch. So I use the Rebar for 'stealthy carry'.

I think that I prefer the bigger size MTs over the
smaller size ones and already have the Wave+
and the SOG PA if I do need a smaller size MT :tu:

My old Rebar had fled like this. Didn't think I was using too much force. This Rebar's pliers also snapped in what I would have considered normal use.

Glad you got the pivots sorted . I looked at a Rebar , as a compact work carry , and decided against it . Multis , with the exceptions of the Heavies like the Swisstool , Surge , and Supertool , are for medium duty work at best . If you are really reefing on it , it should have a name like Bachco , Knipex , or Klein on it .

It simply the structural limitations imposed by sheet metal handles , on one hand , and cast plierheads on the other . With that said , multi’s are very capable , within their performance envelope .

Best Regards

Chris

The thickness of the handles seemed thin to me as well. Definitely thinner than my old fuse and blast

The example I handled, felt tinny . OK tool , but just didn’t fill me with the same confidence as a Surge , or Supertool .

Chris

Well, then again, it’s only the size of a PST. :dunno:

Took some measurements with digital caliper of handle thickness

Rebar and PST are .040 inches or 1.06 mm thick
OG ST and ST300 are .047 in. 1.20 mm thick

Hmm yes, makes sense, moment of inertia proportional to cross-sectional area AND distance of portions of said area from neutral line or torque axis mumble mumble.... ;)
