Title: Skinth mods?
Post by: superpaco on August 15, 2018, 06:01:44 PM
I'm going to order a XL Skinth before long and it doesnt support the flashlight I edc. The light is too long, approximately 1/2" × 5" to fit in the side tubes of the Skinth. So, my big idea is to mod the sheath by using a knife and lighter (or maybe a soldering iron) to make a hole in the bottom of one of the tubes to allow my light to come out the bottom.
My question is has anyone done something like this or made any mods to one of these? Anything that would provide encouragement or a cautionary tale for me? Thanks in advance ladies and gents.

I dont think people wanna try something like that. Maybe better ask company to mod it for you.

Yeah, he said they could not do it for me and that it would void any warranty if I did. After spending 2 1/2 hours looking at the Skinth load out threads on here and edc forums I don't think it would actually work anyway. It seems I would have a significantly easier time asking people what flashlights fit in their XL Skinths with an ST 300....

I know that Fenix LD12, Led Lenser  P3 afs and P3R will fit for sure there

Why not just buy a Skinth that has side tubes instead of closed pockets?

Well jeez, ezdog. That's my flashlight! What model Skinth is that, and what's your loadout?

Which light?

I can not remeber off hand which one these are but I will try to find my receipts for buying them and tell you.
I have 2 identical Skinth,1 built around the Swiss Tool SpiritX and the other the Centerdrive.

All of the models not listed as a size though can have the side tube instead of pocket if you want them too.
You just state your preference in the notes and then I also verify with Eric before starting the wait process.
It has to do with the way he makes them and the sized models are merely folded and sewn patterns I think from 1 piece in some cases so the sides are always pockets on them but the others can be made either way and can also have flaps over the pocket if you want.

The light I was talking about is the Milwaukee 100 lumen 2×AAA model. Thanks for the reply, I'll take a look at the other Skinths without a size in the name.

I am pretty sure that this is the model I have 2 of ?

http://skinthsolutions.com/product/the-skinth-og/

Open side tubes is merely an option and one that I highly recommend.

I have never understood though why the Skinth in general seem designed for only aaa lights and I want more output and runtime from my EDC light usually but I have also adapted to the reality of these designs and hunted down slimmer aa and 123 options and I always carry something more than aaa too.

There are plenty that will fit the slim side tubes of the OG.

I also have a Magnum(or 2)and the tubes on those will fit a whole lot more light but the entire Magnum are so huge that they can be unwieldy to carry to say the least.
In fact I have learned that a Skinth can hold so much somehow that even the smallest models can get heavy pretty quick!

I love that too! :multi:

:iagree: :like:

Question ezdog: top picture, left tool, is that a ratchet of sorts? Or the one in the left pocket in pic no. 2 (same or different)? Where could I get one if it is?

Anyway, in news related to the OP I have done some cosmetic surgery (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,78522.msg1757060.html#msg1757060) on the skinth I have dedicated to the SOG Power Access Deluxe.

Sorry but I am not sure which tool you are asking about......but there is no ratchet in either Skinth I picture either?

Both loads have flashlights in side tubes for starters.

Centerdrive Load has bit kit they ship with and nothing else, maybe the huge and not streamlined Centerdrive is what you are thinking about?

The Spirit X Load has the Spirit X,Pocket Wrench2, Leatherman Bit Card, Leatherman Bit Extension and SK Alox Cadet in the center.

Now I want a Ratchet!? :dunno:

OK, thanks... I was just thinking that it would be nice if there were ratchets this size . the top pic kind of suggested a reversing knob. If they're lights the're pretty cool too  :D

Ahhhh!

The Jetbeam has a 1/4-20" threaded tailcap and might be the best cheap light sold today and the other is a Thrunite T5ti which is another amazing deal in modern LED lights to me!

Maybe you mean something like this though?

These are sold here through a store called Northern Tool and the brand is Olympia.

I would bet they are sold around the world though somewhere too?

Great ratchets, ezdog! :like:

The Topeak ratchet can also take standard bits.

I think mags has one, and I must buy one some day.

Yeah I love the Topeak too and had one from Bike Fixin before seeing them here.

The Olympis are so small though it is crazy and yet they have a decent feel too.

I have one too!
And while it's rarely used, it's there when I need it and can be a true day saver!

During work I'm using a Bosch variant.
Slightly cheaper, a somewhat deeper bit holder and no thumb wheel drive, which is missed sometimes.
So all in all, Topeak or bust!

In the Skinth with a bit holder containing 11 bits.

Alongside the Bosch:

Oh and the Topeak's handle contains a bit holder too so you can use it as a small screwdriver or use a bit extender to create a torsion handle.

Thanks all

Yes, I have a Topeak too. Nice little ratchet which I have in my small tool kit. Might need to find another, or maybe a slightly smaller one yet...

I guess shortening a Topeak could be an option if you don't need the fixed bit holder
