Title: Maximum size of attachments
Post by: MiniChamp on April 24, 2019, 11:39:02 PM
I was disappointed to learn yesterday that the maximal allowed size of MTO message attachments was recently reduced by 50% to 512KB. The current description of the restrictions doesn't even make any sense: It says "Restrictions: 4 per post, maximum total size 4096KB, maximum individual size 512KB" (while a restriction of 4 per post and 512KB per individual translates to a maximum total size of 2048KB). More importantly, MTO message attachments have been used as a reliable mechanism for making some important documents available to the community. The new size restriction significantly cripples this capability. A primary example that comes to my mind is Ulli's table of Victorinox tang stamps (https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,50014.60.html#att306974). The latest version is 752.5KB, so what happens now? How can it ever get updated?

Any chance of restoring the restriction to the good old 1024KB?

There are some good apps for quickly and easily resizing pics with little loss of image quality . It took me less than a minute to do this one.

The loss of quality in what you posted is VERY significant.

When you provide a capability, people tend to use it and when you put constraints, people work around them. If the 512KB restriction would have been there from the start, then maybe Ulli's table would have been made with two images or posted elsewhere. The main problem here is that when you suddenly put new restrictions you break existing things.

I didn't  notice a huge reduction in quality but here's another that is about  a  96% reduction.

We do have the MTo gallery accounts...
One of the issues with attachments is the number of non essential images (memes etc) clogging up the site.
These things cost.
Just take a quick glace at the donations/operational funds for this month...
Peeps want everything for free, we do our best to balance it out.

As Zoidberg said, there are other ways to store critical images.

The attachment setup on the forum is a nightmare to maintain after all these years, plus we are chewing through storage way faster than I'd like.

Thanks for all the replies.

I guess the answer is no.  :(

The resolution of that one looks pretty good for 500kB. :2tu:

Better not be in midden dollars again.

I... can not guarantee that there may or may not be an element of midden somewhere in that transaction.

So you ticked the 'may contain midden' box on the deposit form then?

Well.. it wouldn't be inaccurate to assume that I couldn't exactly not say that it is or isn't almost partially incorrect...

The file size of the picture has to be under 512kb :salute: you can use a picture resizer to reduce the resolution and still post a very nice pic
