After talking with glbm this morning, i realized that i had not carried my Explorer for a while. So i packed it today and while being outside in the garden i had the idea to use its magnifying glass to take some photos of small flowers and such.
I always enjoyed taking photos using a macro lens for my camera, but this is a multi tool forum after all. So i used what i had on hand. The Explorer and my phone. Below are a few of the photos i took today.
Now get your SAKs with magnifying glasses out and show us your (small) world from a different point of view!
-
Great idea! The Explorer has been on my mind a lot lately too.

Those are fantastic photos, SirVic!
Great thread idea. I'll have to take a pic or two as well. Won't be as nice as yours, but hey, I just want to be included too. :woohoo:

To commemorate the carry for a while, which is the Explorer and Free P4, this one looked fairly good for an indoors photo. The silvertech scales are only the second set of scales on this Explorer. The first set, red of course, got damaged from a pretty gnarly fall. :ahhh
The SilverTech is fitting for the pair. :)
Viva la Explorer. The only part of my EDC that has never been changed. I wouldn't even know how to sit without an Explorer in my back left pocket. :ahhh

Nice! I like the magnifying glass. It’s like looking into another world, when you suddenly see detail in something you could not before :)

Thanks, SirVic!
Will definitely get some more mag shots with the Explorer. Looking forward to what you come up with next. :)

Hm, new idea: SAK with Telescope. Hey Vic, you hear me? :pok: :D
-
Funny to think at one time I had 6 Swisschamps. I am a huge fan of the magnifier. I finally got a second Explorer ( no hook variety ) for which I was very happy. My Swisschamp is also a no hook variety. I like the wider viewing of the clear housing but I also like the stronger magnification of the grey housing.
I was too lazy to get my Passenger and +B Yeoman.

Now, this is through my Belomo, one of the best triplet loupes out there. So the Vic magnifier isn’t that bad, considering it’s a single plastic lens.

Thank you, Sir VicaLot! I've wanted one for 30 years and never thought I could afford it either. I set it as a goal a couple years ago and started squirreling cash away and working on my better half at the same time. Finally for my birthday earlier this spring I was able to go in to my AD and wear it out.
Make it a goal and be single-minded. You can do it too.

The Baltic amber could be older, but not 65 million years old. So I might be able to summon forth a particularly nasty and large killer bird of the flightless variety.

I didn’t take a picture because I was in the doctors office, but today the magnifier came in handy to read the small print on a medicine vial so I could verify I was getting the right injection.
I may have also created another fan because the nurse saw me using the magnifier and liked it. She started asking questions about what it was called and the other tools that came on it, then what store or if ordered. She said as soon as she gets home she is going to ask her husband to order her a SAK Explorer.

I don‘t think that would work, at least not in the forum. But maybe a Mod can say more about it. I think we would have to start an open gallery on an image hoster site, where everyone would have to post. But then there is the problem of linking back to here :dunno:

That’s a great shot Sir Vic. :like:
In 1941, Swiss electrical engineer George de Mestral went hunting in the Alps and afterwards noticed his clothes, and his dog’s fur, were covered in burdock burrs. This mechanism of clinging to passing creatures is the burdock’s way of spreading seeds across greater distances. Mestral put one of the burrs under a microscope and discovered the simple hooks which allowed it to cling to loops in his socks and in dog hair. The discovery inspired Mestral to create velcro, which he patented in 1955.

Thanks Max!
I've had that watch a long time - and it's probably the most 'special' object that I own, for sure the one watch I would keep if I could only have one. It would take a much better photographer than I am to do it any justice.
Back when I was a real watch nut I was single and without kids...would not be possible for me now. Luckily being a SAK nut works out a lot cheaper!
I see that Dornblüth still make the model I have (99.1 - the simplest) but it costs not far from double what I paid for it now.
-
Been there too...before school fees and house bonds. The Dopplechronograph and Master Geographic Compressor the two I’d keep if I had to launch the rest. SAKs are a better collection option for me today and even for creative mods (used to ‘assemble’ my own Unitas 6497/8 watches for a while). And the MTo forum adds to the fun!
What do I wear today? A bit of a sleeper...GW-5000.

Very cool shot, fullenglish.
Like you, I used to be more of a watch collector, but kids' college tuition and other life expenses have a way of interfering with that interest. And vintage watches have gone crazy. I expect they'll fall back to the stratosphere someday, but for now I'm scaling way back.
I've always been interested in Victorinox products, and bought my first VSAK about 40 years ago. Fun to watch something just accumulate over the years and before you know it you're a "collector."

Those are two awesome watches. JLC and IWC are two of the marques that I really respect, they have history & have stayed true to it.

Nothing wrong with a good Casio G IMO! A real watch man respects good design and functionality where he finds it.
Shameful confession: these days I don't wear a watch at all half the time. Mainly because I have worn out the straps on most of my favourites and haven't summoned up the energy or cash to get proper replacements for them. Straps gotta be right, I can't take them out on any old thing.

Well they definitely aren't watches to wear when you're going to be getting your hands dirty or hitting the trail. But the kind of tiny scratches to the case you get from just general wear really don't impact the look of the watch IMO. I wore mine almost every day for a number of years (office job) and it still looks fine.
Of course there is no rational or sensible reason to spend that kind of money on a watch, anyway.

Labeling in general is what I find it very useful for. Some companies make the print on their labels small, not good contrast between background and print or difficult to read fonts.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone. What is the reference to a Calendar, BClogic?
As BC said there is a calendar every year made up of members photos. Throughout the month members nominate photos for that month. SirVicaLot shared the thread for this month. Then at the beginning of the next month, members vote on the pictures that were nominated. Here is the link to vote for January’s picture

Interesting looking blade, Alexanderre! :like:

It’s kinda Damascus blade, but from two weeks of using the knife I can tell that it doesn’t help in any practical way. Actually that’s the reason why my wife chose this knife, but surprisingly it was almost blunt brand new and the edge retention disappoints just as well
Made it razor sharp but not for long

Nice edge on the kitchen knife! :tu:
Well
My ladies won’t tell me, but I guess they’ve been cutting something on their plates with this knife, because a few hours ago it was razor sharp and it hardly cuts a piece of pie now. When I asked my wife she was like “don’t know what you’re talking about”
lasted even less than I’d expect, so had to touch it up again - never ever in my life I had to sharpen a knife twice a day until now

I did the same thing on a circuit board the other day. didn’t think to take a pic of it for the thread. Couldn’t for the life of me read the capacitor text and thankfully had my Explorer.

Caught this the other day and been meaning to post it.
Nothing special, just a beetle in standard issue black, but with a purpley-blue sheen to the edges of his shell. The girls loved it, Mum screamed when they brought it over to show her, and I... of course... whipped out my SwissChamp to grab a photo for the forum!

Yeah, she hates all kinds of things like that... makes you wonder why we live in the countryside.
I'm trying to train the girls to eschew such feminine stereotypes, though.

Thanks! If I would do it again I would take it slow and don't rush it so much but it's still my favorite

I planted some zinnias over the weekend and they are so colorful I just had to get a magnified photo.

Great shots, y'awl! :tu: Before too long, I'll trot out the Evo 23 and make a contribution or two.

Wonderful! One of my favorite long-running threads. Getting these pics is harder than it looks!
-
:iagree: on both Myron. This is pure fun!
-
Thanks to all who continue to contribute. It really is harder than the amazing pictures demonstrate.

Found this guy on the ground today. Blue winged mud dauber I think. Would not have gotten close if still moving…

I took these pictures of some of my Böker 182's for a post on another forum. I'm interested in how the tree shield evolved in the first few decades of production.
Here are the knives:

My advice -- don't get started! The pattern 182 in particular (the so-called humpbacks) are very addicting if you are prone to that sort of thing.

I think this is a first I’ve seen of ice cream under the mag lens. I had one of those today as well! It did not last long enough for me to think about a mag lens picture.

Even though mine was in the fridge, it melted while I was eating my Market Salad with vinaigrette. So I ate it from a bowl with a spoon. Still quite yummers.
Ok, that's just super weird and super cool at the same time!
Being super weird and (barely) cool is how I landed Mrs. Powernoodle 38 years ago.
Looks fade, but weird is forever.

Well, those colorful zinnias are long gone thanks to the crazy 100+ deg. F heat we’ve had here in Houston.

We are fortunate to live in a more rural area for the time being. Our acreage has some forested area, a bit of clearing with grasses and ferns, and is nestled between
the neighbors 20 or so acres of corn and the train tracks. If we hope over the tracks we’re a bit of elevation above the river.
So, we get some wonderful bugs like these guys. I’ll have to start getting some flora pics.

Unfortunately deet is very destructive stuff destroying clothing with plastic content, and get it in open sores, cuts, eyes etc….. speaking from experience gained the hard way!
